- Don't Starve's Adventure Mode can be quite the challenge. Today, we take Maxwell head-on, and speedrun the full Adventure Mode from chapter 1 all the way to the epilogue. This speedrun can also double as a guide. I know a lot of people have trouble getting through it, so I've made sure to point out strategies that I'm using (and the reasons for using them), worldgen and chapter-specific tips and tricks, and when I think a method might be beyond a beginner, I try to point out alternatives. I'll also be posting a text guide/walkthrough down here in the description because I know not everyone has time to sit through 2 hours of content from beginning to ending.
In this speedrun, I am using Wolfgang because his movement speed and attack damage both scale with his hunger, so if he has full hunger, then his speed is increased by 25%. Obviously, an increase in speed like this is immensely beneficial in a lengthy speedrun. I wouldn't advise beginners use Wolfgang because his stats become arguably the worst of all the characters when he is in his wimpy (unfed) state; his speed, attack power, health, etc are all decreased. It's even worse than Wes in my opinion. So unless you are capable of reliably obtaining a lot of food, Wolfgang at best is slightly worse than Wilson, and at worst, when wimpy, is the hardest character in the game.
I would suggest beginners use WX78 because gears are plentiful in Adventure Mode. You can acquire stacks upon stacks of them and become essentially invincible.
The Game is Afoot, The King of Winter, Archipelago, A Cold Reception.
The above are the 4 chapters that you can get in the first 4 slots of Adventure Mode. In slot 3, Two Worlds is also a possibility. You'll always get Darkness for slot 5, and epilogue is the ending chapter where you meet Maxwell.
The chapter I am starting with is The Game is Afoot. This is on purpose because of its unique worldgen. This chapter's worldgen consists of a small, central starter biome from which all of the main biomes branch; the worldgen of the biomes are inconsistent except for the one that contains the Teleportato base; that biome always has rocky land, savannah, tallbirds, beefalo, and most importantly, walrus camps. I can get my food, science gear, warm clothing, and walking cane all in one swoop. So right from the start, I can be mighty Wolfgang with a walking cane! It's really a tremendous speed-boost, and an obvious asset in a speedrun.
I would advise against starting with this chapter of Adventure Mode if you are a beginner. It is quite brutal. It always has basic resource shortages like flint, grass, and twigs, and each biome is very hostile to navigate without decent armor. I'd recommend starting with Archipelago. It's a relatively peaceful chapter where you can get your basic resources stocked, your science gear and machines prebuilt, and armor equipped. Sanity shouldn't be a problem if you just pick flowers. This is the one chapter that I didn't get in this run.
Basically you just have to roam around and find wormholes on your map. Jump through the wormholes to get to other islands. Each island will have a Thing. The one problematic island is the bee island. Make sure to navigate that one with armor, and only during the day. Besides that, it's fairly straight forward.
The King of Winter's big twist is that it has sanity/insanity bridges that force you to become insane or sane in order to progress. It's also winter, so you'll have to contend with the coldness. The main thing you have to do in this chapter is craft a shovel and dig up whatever green or blue mushrooms you find in the starter area and connecting forest. Eat them raw to reduce sanity (especially green shrooms) and cooked to restore sanity. The starter island usually has one Thing and one connecting bridge to the rest of the chapter, so grab the Thing, cross the bridge, and repeat.
A Cold Reception has worldgen that is very similar to sandbox worldgen. The main thing about this chapter is that it rains a lot. It's actually not that big of a deal. There are brief lulls in the rain that you should absolutely take advantage of to decrease your wetness, so light something on fire with a torch or craft a campfire at every lull in the rain, and your wetness shouldn't ever get above ~25%. Guardian pig bridges are a common feature of this chapter.
Two worlds is the easy chapter. Just go through one of the two wormholes to the hard side, and collect all the Things. Not much to it beyond that.
Darkness is a very linear chapter. It is composed of large islands connected by bridges. Every island has a Thing except the starter island, so you just collect the Thing then find the bridge, and repeat.
Epilogue is the ending chapter where you can finally obtain Maxwell.

Today I tried to beat Adventure mode for the first time...
Was really lucky with WX-78, got Archipelago first, I got scienced up for Cold Reception, found Moggles and a Miner hat along the way. On top of that, got Two Worlds, invented every useful thing you could imagine. Then King Of Winter came on, and it was a bit difficult with insanity bridges, and 2 Mactusk Camps, but I overcame.
Then Darkness, it is going to be my favourite from now on, (I found 2 Things,) I forgot Darkness lacks any source of food, so I starved, almost went insane, but being in RoG was beneficious because a checkerboard biome (?) (clockworks + marble), had a huge income of gears for WX-78.
But I almost died of the Bishops, they overcrowded me, with 70 hp managed I to survive, but the greed...
I saw a "lonely" Knight, attacked it, but BUMM 3 Bishops assasinated me out of nothing.
So my greed ended a 5 and a half hour long, gripping adventure.
Your guide helped me through the most of it, but my simple dumbness lost it all.

You can place 4 pieces of wood on the tentacle spawn location, light it on fire, then throw a final hit. This technique can be useful on both story mode and plain survival. Another thing to take in check is that in summer the backpack bug works the same with cold thermal stones. You can do this technique by placing as many thermal stones as your bag can hold and you will get cold from the backpack. Tall birds can be trapped and killed easily if you use the 2 x 2 box technique which will trap the bird, making sure he doesn’t move, then you can hit it freely.

after 120 hours of playing the game and figuring stuff out I finally beat adventure mode today myself, with WX-78. i wanted to pop back to this video to thank you for it, because watching you helped me figure out a lot of key little things I could be doing better! i actually got Wes and Maxwell unlocked together in one run! my sequence was Cold Reception, Game is Afoot, King of Winter, Two Worlds, Darkness. CR was a little rough with the rain but I hit GiA with a couple gears in my pouch and snowballed from there. found 3 touch stones in Darkness and a bunch of cool rare set pieces like the tentacle/merm war and the maxwell statue guarded by a pig fort in Two Worlds. it was like the game itself was celebrating with me lol. anyway thank you thank you thank you!

why archipelago didn't appear?
Tip on improving your time: Use spacebar to pick things up, and hold spacebar and spam click while chopping trees or mining rocks. Speeds up the process saving you in-game time and timer time
If you use the mouse to pick things up it's faster, because it skips the later half of the animation just like chopping + mining!
This helped me so much ty for the fact and the speed run keep this on!

Hey, Don't Starve God! Can i suggest a challenge? (however i guess it was already proposed before me)
Shipwreckt Afloat Survival and Giants Hunting. Basic idea is similar to Ruins Survival. You choose a character and have several days (1 to 5) to prepare, floating around islands and getting needed resources and recipes for eternal sailing. You lose if you die or get off the boat/board after the prep countdown ends. You win after slaying all 3 bosses (and maybe white whale but it will take too much time so it is optional). You can change terms if you want, preserving the main idea of course.
So what do you say? Will it be boring? What about using only Walani Surfboard? :D
This is all very possible so long as this challenge is not extended into the dry season. Unless you can somehow make 2 or so chill amulets in those first 5 days you can be on land you will die to heat.

i would like suggest few things i thought of when watching maybe for those like me trying to learn, hopefully they are right.
- avoid hunger falling below mighty, wolfgang transformation animation since it waste time
- eating food that is more spoiled first (unless other reasons).
- equipping divining rod only just before you harvest grass/twigs/others if possible, so the sound and words play out when you are not moving, less time spent walking without walking cane
- dropping Things when passing by Wooden Thing to empty inventory space
First, hunger drains quicker as mighty, second, spoiled/stale food have a debuff, like less hunger, health, or sanity. Spoiled food removes sanity and has bad debuffs. And finnaly, you don't need to bring out the divining rod when you aren't searching for the teleportato. The walking cane makes you go faster. So when you are searching for the teleportato you can quickly bring out the divining rod whenever you want to see how close you are. Also with stale or spoiled food you can stack more of that food to remove a little bit of the staleness/spoilness depending on how much you have in the stack. (Ehm, I dunno why I'm writing this comment but whatever.)
+TheMighty Pikachu you can also build the teleportato whenever you want. Piece, by piece. No matter how long it takes.
i think you misunderstood what i meant.
i mean that because he is continuously accidentally falling to normal then having to eat to above mighty, he should watch hunger to avoid ever falling to normal if his intention is to remain at mighty, so he does not waste 2 animation times for transformation.
not eating spoiled food. rather, i meant eating food that is comparatively more spoiled. between the stack of 20 cooked meat and 7 cooked meat, the stack of 20 is less fresh, but both are in the green fresh zone. consuming the less fresh food means that overall freshness of food is higher. he did this later in the run where he would put the fresher smaller stack of carrots to the left of the item bar, where new fresh carrots would gather, being able to eat the less fresh but still green carrots from the larger stack.
i do not mean bringing out the diving rod when not searching for Things. i meant that if you are going for highest efficiency, you can quick switch to the diving rod just before pressing Space for auto-harvesting, then switch back to the walking cane once done harvesting, so that time spent equipping the diving rod is when character is stationary and not benefiting from the walking cane's movement speed bonus.
i dont understand what your last reply means. i meant that you can drop your non-Wooden Things around your Wooden Thing area to empty inventory space, if you have found your Wooden Thing before gathering all the Things, since their final destination is the Wooden Thing anyway. whether them being on the ground will negatively affect the readings of the divining rod is dependent on map shape and size though. (it should not affect readings much, since the Wooden Thing is right beside the dropped Things anyway)

Nicely done as always. I'm a bit bitter towards Adventure Mode. I mostly only play DST, and didn't even own DS until this recent Steam summer sale. My first attempt at Adventure Mode as Wilson a couple weeks ago went really well, I was careful throughout, took 20 days on Chapter 1 Archipelago to get most everything crafted that I could ever need, then 6 or so days each on Chapters 2-4. Then I got very wrecked by the Darkness worldgen. There was either one bizarre clockwork bridge or maybe two consecutive ones closely spaced. I rushed through at its edge (with only logsuit for armor due to miner hat) and made it safely, only to realize I was now surrounded on 3 sides by clockwork bridge and the other side by ocean. I didn't think quickly enough to try to rush the other edge, instead exploring away from the ocean. I hadn't lost the first bishops' aggro and aggroed a bunch more while exploring my predicament, and quickly got killed by nearly a dozen bishops at once, putting a swift end to 6 or so hours of careful work.
Since you seem very experienced with the worldgen, have you encountered this sort of layout before? It was essentially a "C" made of Maxwell biome and very densely populated with only clockworks (no marble trees, evil flowers, Maxwell traps, just clockworks), with ocean capping the C, so that there was a small patch of regular forest turf surrounded by clockworks.
Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about. That worldgen is pretty neat. It'd be a fun place to build a base. And yeah, Adventure Mode can be tricky. It took me a few tries to complete it when I first tried. It's so rewarding when you finally get to epilogue though.

So Yesterday I decided to Adventure mode for the first time to unlock Wes and Maxwell, and boy was I not having a good time. The randomly generated nonsense of each world kept giving me bad luck. Along with this video, I was looking up many guides for it and one said to try starting Adventure mode with "The Games Afoot" level. I debated, but then I just said f*ck it and did it all in one sitting. And I completed it and got both Wes and Maxwell.

Just started to play this game, but i cant imagine whats going on in 31:00 when you craft that alchemy machine without materials. Maybe im missing something , as i said im just learning this game right now.
I precrafted it earlier. If you craft a structure but don't immediately place it down, then it gets stored in the crafting tab so that you can place it down later without using up additional material.

Mightiest and the tier just below mightiest are good to hover around. Your speed scales with hunger, so the fuller you are, the faster you are, and since it's a speedrun, you want to go as fast as you can.
Easiest? In my opinion, Wolfgang is one of the hardest characters to play, especially if you have trouble getting a lot of food, and particularly in this speedrun since you have to maintain mightiness for several hours in a row in adventure mode. If you don't get enough food, Wolfgang becomes wimpy and his stats all go into the negative making him the worst character of all. He's definitely the best character for this particular speedrun in terms of efficiency and speed though.

what purpose to the lawn gnomes have? I've got five of them now and I haven't found a reason to keep them.
The gnomes are the most powerful objects in the game. They are basically the gods of Don't Starve. Collect a bunch and sprinkle them around your base and you'll receive untold fortune. ;-P
are you sure? I haven't done that yet but if something's going to happen at my base I want to know if it's safe. I've put a lot of time into my world and I don't want Wilson to die again.

Yeah, the spiky trees actually have a shorter radius than other types of trees. You know those huge densely-packed spiky tree forests you sometimes see in adventure mode? Try lighting some on fire and watch how the fire doesn't spread. Kinda odd.

Two things make me wonder.. First, why would you throw away your heatstone in King of winter??? And second, on the last world, isn't that a gunpowder that you have in your backpack? Couldn't you just use it to destroy the boulders instead of wasting time looking for a flint to make an pickaxe?? GG anyways

I want to share that when a beefalo tries to hit u it resets their agro timer u can use this to fight 2 beefalos at a time instead herds but u need 2 of the following: Wolfgang's speed, walking cane, road

Honestly, I found Webber's skull right next to a pig house when I running by it, there was a spider den right next to the house, so I can only assume the piggy got it for me. It's random chance more than anything.
