  • In order to stay human, we need to rethink at what it means to be human. Rationality that was so useful in Modern Times might not be as useful now… Wondering about when robots will become human unveils a bug in how we think about humans, more than anything else! We think of humans as machines since too long… So, time to re-think the legacy of the Cartesian rational subject.
Nicole Dewandre studied Engineering (applied physics), operations research, economics and philosophy. After working more than 30 years at the European institution, she is still an out-of-the-box thinker who loves to focus on the human side and societal aspects of European policies.
In 2002, a turning point for her, she published a book "critique de la raison administrative" when she discovered the strength of pragmatism and got more than inspired by the work of Hannah Arendt. Nicole is also a feminist since she was in charge of the promotion of gender equality in European research.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

In short: "When we see others as the enemy, we risk becoming what we hate. When we oppress others, we end up oppressing ourselves. All of our humanity is dependent upon recognizing the humanity in others."

Descartes opinions on animals was detrimental and borderline insane ... lacking the very humanity we needed then and need now.
