- White voice or white singing is a contemporary name, used usually in Eastern Europe, for the traditional singing style. The technique is based on an open throat. A characteristic feature of this kind of voice is its brightness, clearness (not in the meaning of voice color) or intensity. It had been practiced since ancient times among the rural population in Central and Eastern Europe.
With the fantastic vocal coach Paulina Miu we had the unique opportunity to film a 2-part workshop on this special singing technique.
LYRICS:
Tam u Marysi nie zamieciono
Drobnej kaliny nie nasadzono
Ło to to
Marysia wstała pozamiatała
Drobnej kaliny ponasadzała
Ło to to
Bo Jasio jedzie na przywitanie
Wiezie chusteczki na przedawanie
Ło to to
Komu innemu drogo przedaje
swojej Marysi to darmo daje
Ło to to
TRANSLATION (EN)
Mary's place was not swept
A tiny calla was not planted
Mary got up and swept
She planted the tiny calla
Cause Johnny's on his way to say hello
He's carrying shawls for sale
He's selling them at high price to other people
He's giving them for free to Mary

Ok awesome. Now its time to figure out how to practice without scaring the neighbors
Hahaha just thought the same during practicing

I practice in my car.

I did these exercises while walking in the park. People freaked out 😂 thanks for this
as a ukrainian, the white voice hit the right spot in my soul
So excited that the TH-cam algorithm brought me here!! I’m a professional opera singer and I love this style of singing but it’s just a different technique and I’ve never managed to achieve this sound in a way that felt healthy! I’m developing a project that combines classical songs accompanied by folk instruments and also folk singing from different cultures and in different styles! So excited to practice this and see where I can take it! And I’m of polish heritage so I love that you’re teaching a polish song. 🥰
Właśnie takiego filmiku szukałam! Dziękuję!!
My God I love this.
Thank you so much!

@@discoverfolkmusic5237 Thank you for creating this video! I'm Polish and I've been following Paulina Miu on youtube for some time now... I couldn't find any of her tutorials in Polish, so I thought there were none, but today I found this video (and the second one) and I'm soooo excited to try these excercises out!!! (but maybe tomorrow... i don't want to wake my neighbours up at 1:00 am haha)
Thank you very much! We are happy that you like the videos! Are you living in Poland? I can give you the contact of another fantastic vocal Coach in warsaw. Best Greetings
Thank you so so much for this! I was always wondering why my singing wouldn‘t suit our Serbian folklore songs. Will try this!
Question: What technique is used by slavic male singers (baritone and bass voice)?
How to answer correctly? I don't know about another slavic countries, but in Russia similar singing. For example - there is a Russian Cossack tradition. But all types of voices sing there at once - this is a choral tradition, we have few solos - from two to as many people as you want. To listen to (and see) here:

Not Russian Cossack tradition, but Russian tradition, man's voice is baritone, of course - th-cam.com/video/HrE2ppcNAhU/w-d-xo.html
These were great exercises! I use white voice in punk and hard core singing (it works great, especially when combined with some growling), but I had no idea how to help myself out when my throat is feeling tight and closed. Awesome, this was such a help!
(But my dog left the room when I tried it out...)
Hahahahaha… would love to here some Punkrock white Voice!! Fantastic combination🥳🥁
Thank you for the post. I was looking for a good explanation of the "white voice". You gave not only a definition but also examples and real (your own) singing. Thank you!!!

This is amazing, thank you so much!
thank you so much, this is such an excellent tutorial!
Thank you for the instruction!
Really wonderful explanation of technique! I will be sharing it with my old Balkan singing friends. One tiny comment; I think you meant the word yawN (pronounced kind of like German ‘Ja,’ but longer and finished with an N).
These exercises are great and explaibed very well, thank you! I am singing a bulgarian song (kaval sviri) in the choir and nobody is trained in the technique properly. Would you say this is the same technique as is used in bulgaria?
Dear Camilla, yes i think they use the same vocal technique. We are going with a group to warzaw next year for another White Voice Singing Workshop. If you Are interested, i can send you Informations. Best Greetings
love this
This is basically Geddy Lee's voice.
Hear how he appropriated that voice, when he sings Polka versions of Rush or Yiddish songs.
What is this beautiful building you’re in? Great info by the way
Thats the beautiful Wehrmühle in Biesenthal, Germany.
