  • This video is about closing the right hardware for you. We will look at why I use the specific pieces of gear I use, how I use each, and what each does especially well for my live improvised techno performance workflow. I will demonstrate how I use the Electron Digitakt, Elektron Octatrack, Elektron Digitone, 1010 Music Blackbox, Strymon Big Sky, Elektron Analog Heat, and EOwave Quadrantid Swarm to make improvised live techno.

    Now, if you’re wanting to live techno, it’s important to make sure you select the right gear for you. Gear that feel like for your particular needs. I’m going to go through the process of how you go about it depending on your own unique personal requirements. First thing you’re going to have to do is go and purchase all of Electron’s flagship sequencers. Every one of them. That’s the right gear for you.
    You’re welcome.
    Thanks for stopping by…

      Rytm is still my favorite drum machine. I have it in my studio and it is on pretty much every production I do. I also sample sounds I make on it for use in the DT live performances. A4 as well. It is on my synth rack and a permanent fixture in my studio. Love the sound and sequencers of both and they will be permanent parts of my production workflow. @@SURCOlive Watched a few other videos. Great channel, lots of good practical tips! By the way, I still can't solve the problem with choosing a sequencer with the Euclidean rhythms function. And also interested in sequencers with a polymeter / polyrhythm function. Thanks in advance.

      @@Sonmz There are not a lot of good hardware options for Euclidean sequencers in regular hardware. The Deluge added a version of it in a recent update, but I haven’t seen many purpose built Euclidean sequencers in hardware format. Polyrhythms and polymeters can both be done well with the Delige or the Syntakt. Outside of software plug ins, the best versions of Euclidean sequencing I’ve found have been in the modular synth world, but that is a whole different realm. Thank you so much for watching!

    • @Sonmz
      @Sonmz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SURCOlive Thanks for the answer! I am very meticulous in choosing devices for a DAWless setup. So I'm considering different options. I'm not a modular nerd, so I originally planned to use eurorack modules without "fanaticism".
      After trying setups of my fellow techno/experimental artists I, I took some ideas. I like Tolkachev's setup, it's just based on a combination of one groovebox (elektron/MC-707) and a relatively compact modular rack. He uses Harmod and most likely I will buy it. I also recently tested Torso (for unusual rhythms), a great device, but it didn’t suit me. I've watched a lot of DAWless-themed videos over the years, but your channel impressed me. Some puzzles have been solved in my head. Now I clearly understand what I want. Some time ago I was hesitant to choose desktop synths for live performances that would meet my requirements (two coast synthesis, etc.), now I have discarded this option, since it cannot be compact in any way. I will solve this problem by creating a two-tier rack, I have studied the topic more deeply and know what specific modules I need. Thank you for giving me confidence. I will follow your recommendation to build a setup around Elektron's grooveboxes/syths.

      Btw, I'm also a big fan of Matthew's Octatrack templates… I bought the most recent ones. For the sake of learning, I originally planned to wait for him to explain how he set things up, so I can try to rebuild and understand it at the same time. But whenever I saw him use that EZ Drummer effect, the itch to skip the waiting and understanding (for now, hehe) became more and more intense. And it is beautiful. Actually one of the most beautiful and mind blowing things I have ever seen in relation to the Octatrack.

    I'd like to do something similar but on a smaller scale, with Circuit Tracks in place of DT, a Typhon and an Octatrack as a performance mixer.
    How would that work for live improvisation in your opinion? I remember a video of yours talking about grooveboxes and that gave me the inspiration.

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it was helpful! Circuit is a very capable drum machine for that portion of the setup. I would suggest a Digitone over the typhoon to get the sequencer and the 4 voices. Typhon would still need to be sequenced by something, and in the end would only offer a single monophonic voice. You can likely find a used Digitone for a couple hundred more than the typhoon for 4 times the voices and the best sequencer there is. You could sequence it from the Circuit, but you'd be limited to the number of total tracks being 8 between drums and sequencing the synth. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!

    Yo! I have smaller but similar setup to what you've used here and in other videos. Your ideas are really interesting, but there's some stuff I'm always confused about. You've got the sounds and the sequences already set up with each machine right? Like the hi-hats on the Digitakt, those were already sequenced and programmed, so when you're in the pattern with that kick drum, you've got that hi-hat pattern available? Then same on the DN. But where the improv element comes in is basically pacing, mixing and matching say, pattern 4 on the DT and pattern 10 on the DN, which contain 8 and 4 sounds and sequences respectively, and then choosing a sample and patch on the Swarm?
    What I get confused with is you talk about having a palette of sounds to choose from, but you're not pulling a kick drum from this pattern, snare from this pattern, etc, you're basically picking a pattern, maybe you like the kick, but then you're also going to have to use the snare that's in that pattern? Or are you swapping out that snare sound from the pool on the fly if you think of one that you would prefer?
    This is maybe kind of a hyper-specific question, but I realized watching this video again that you have the sequences ready to go with the associated sounds, so when you pull up to the gig, you've already got sequenced sounds, but you've made it so that all the sequences can kind of go together, which means I'm actually pretty close to being able to do something like this too!

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! Thanks for reaching out. Check out some of my more recent videos and live streams to see what I'm doing now. I do have basic drum patterns (4X4 kick, 16th hat, etc), but I also resequenced and swap sounds on the fly. I'm using the analog Rytm for drums now for the ability to sound design on the fly with synth and samples layered. For melodic elements, I have kits of sounds with no sequences (blank sequencers at the start of the show). I know the sounds work together and don't overlap in the spectrum too much, but all of the writing and developing of anything melodic or tonal percussive beyond basic drum kits is 100% improv. Also... the swarm doesn't have any presets, so all patches are made up on the fly. No way to save anything. Ive moved to 100% improv other than sound kits without any patterns and the drum pattern basics, but even those I'm resequencing and modifying sounds as I perform. Nothing prepared in advance. I hope this helps. As I mentioned, check the newer videos for some more in depth on what I'm doing. Thanks for watching!

    very infomative. looking to buy 1 piece of new gear and would like to hear your opinion.
    say you had a deluge and some hardware synths (2 polys and a couple of monos) , but no elektron gear, which one would you suggest you pull the trigger on first, and how would you incorporate it into a home studio setup?

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say the Digitakt first. It is the best one for getting into the sequencer. It has 8 audio and 8 midi tracks for sequencing external gear, and a lot of performance functionality. You could use it at the heart of your full setup. If you are using a DAW the Digitakt connects via the free overbridge software. It runs within your daw to allow multi tracking from the Digitakt via usb (midi and audio over usb). Bang for the buck it is amazing.

    • @williamwallace6508
      @williamwallace6508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SURCOlive and in this case how would you use the deluge? Or not?
      The Digitakt has been on my radar for a while BUT the rytm has reputation for being the best elektron device ever!. Is there a reason to go Digitakt over the rytm if price not an issue given I would like to keep the deluge for sequencing, as its sequencer as you know is really excellent , as is the note grid which is something I would like to keep!

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I personally don’t use the deluge in my day to day studio work. I take it on the go when I can’t bring other gear as it does a lot of things well in one package, and i end up with a lot of bits i can use in my productions. Digitakt sequencer is head and shoulders above the Deluge, although the note grid is a fun way to enter notes and still could be used that way. Use the Deluge to sequence notes into the Digitakt, then use the Elektron sequencer to dial everything up. It all comes down to workflow and the type of music you are making. For what I do, the Elektron sequencer is at to core of everything. Ask for the Rytm. It is my studio drum machine. For me it is the best drum machine you can get. It does drum sound design better than any other using the analog drum synth engines and sample layering, and the sequencer takes that to the next level. I will say that sequencing other gear is not as easy as on the Digitakt. If we’re starting with one, it would be the Digitakt for sure. Then add the Rytm to dive deep into drums.

      interesting. Last question. You said the sequencer on the DT is head and shoulders above the deluge. Can you kindly elaborate because ive seen a few vids on YT where the deluge is being used with elektron stuff, and in every case they are using the deluge as master. Maybe they are mainly using as a midi controller as arranger and to launch clips?
      Also have you used the MC707 that seems to be another fantastic device. Any comment much appreciated.Great channel btw

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@williamwallace6508 Deluge is much easier to sequence, but far less deep. With the Elektrons every parameter of sound, rhythm, modulation, effects, etc can be locked uniquely by step. In the Digitakt, each step can be a different sample as well. Trigger probability is another hugely powerful feature that is deeper on the Elektrons than any other. Finally conditional triggers allow individual steps to act in different ways depending on what the preceding trigger did on that cycle of the sequence. There is no other internal sequencer that is anywhere near as deep as the Elektrons. Deluge is much easier to sequence notes though. I have used the 707. It is a solid groove box with a good sounding synth engine and great performance controls. Very limited sample editing and difficult sample management (although not as bad as Deluge) make Elektron boxes and Deluge better in my opinion. I hope this helps.

    So what's the minimal set up for creating hard techno drums/kicks and acid sounds? I want to play around live, not really for production but for myself

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you are looking to ‘create’ the sounds you’ll want to look into synthesizers. Most any synth can make drum and acid-ish sounds with enough practice. You’ll likely want something with a sequencer for each. If you are looking for the easiest path to play around you’ll probably want to go the sampler route and use sounds made by someone else. A ‘groove box’ is an all in one solution that can be sample based or synth based and would have a sequencer built in. That’s likely the best place to start. I did a video on selecting groove boxes that might help steer you in the right direction. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

But from what I've heard it seems like I need a 303 to make the acid sounds and then a groove box. I will check out your video, but I've been recommended the TR8/s, Digitakt but Ive also seen some poeple using a Ableton push/ kontrol machine / novation circuit. What do you recommend out of those? Or am I completely off track of the things I need?

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@martinflo any of those would be useful in what you are looking for. The real breakdown is workflow since no machine makes music on its own. The workflow is broken roughly into samples or synths. Both have their positives and negatives. The other part of workflow is more about how your brain works. A machine that I love to play you may hate and the other way. There are no magic machines that just make the sounds you are looking for. Ultimately it will be about getting to know whatever gear you chose and learning how to make the sounds you are looking for.

      @@martinflo again it depends on the workflow you gel with. I’m a big fan of Elektron gear and I think the Digitakt (sample based) and Syntakt (synth based) are head and shoulders above the rest in their categories. But… I gel with the Elektron workflow and others don’t. Some prefer touch screens so they like the MPC line. Others want portability so they go for the Deluge or OP-1. Still others love the Roland sound (they do sound great) so they lean toward the MC707 or TR8s. I can’t stand the Roland workflow, but others don’t mind or don’t want to easily modify sounds in a performance. As I said I’m partial to Elektron and they have the best built in sequencers by a mile and I’ve tried pretty much everything out there, but you’ll never know what works for you until you try.

(ezbot vid : th-cam.com/video/9b2LuXCBrAA/w-d-xo.html). I think you probably don't need your digitakt because OT can read those samples ? Maybe i miss something ? I'm not a live player and i like to backup project as simply as possible. I only backup DT project and it's done. My Minitaur and SE-02 sequences are on DT midi tracks. How do you backup things from multiples gears ? Do you ... ?

    • @SURCOlive

      My live performances are improvised so I don’t back things up as ‘tracks’. I do save ‘patterns’ in each machine as lots of sounds and not specific sequences. This allows me to improvise live for my shows. Octatrack can play samples but there are only 8 tracks. I am using them all as either thru machines for the external gear, or as loopers to record loops live while performing that allow me to transitions from section to section. @@DonCrack97 awesome! Welcome to this crazy never ending learning and exploration! I would say that you might want to start with sounds. You can go the sample route and get a sampler to load samples into, then use them to start making music. If you want to make the sounds start with a synthesizer. As samplers go there are a ton of options. The SP 404 MK2 is very popular. I’m a big fan of the Elektron machines, so Digitakt would be a good place to start. There are also the MPC machines. All very good with samples. If a synth is what you prefer, I always recommend the Korg Minilogue XD as a great starter synth. Amazing for the price and a great way to learn in a very hands on way. As a synth based all in one machine i love the Syntakt. 12 tracks and tons of synthesis possibilities, but lots of presets to get you started. You’ll want drums too, and samples easier than drum synthesis. All of the samplers I mentioned are good for this too. If you want a dedicated drum machine check out the Circuit Rhythm or even the Roland TR8. My personal recommendation if you want to start making techno on one piece of gear would be either the Digitakt or Syntakt. One sample based and the other synth based, but both amazing machines that you can pick up pretty quickly and will likely never outgrow. O hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!
