I think it would be cool to see you analyze your favourite techno track, visualize it(in the same manner) and talk about the structure and tricks used in the track :)
@@OscarUnderdog Hi Oscar! What about analyzing DVS1-Lower Wacker Drive… ? th-cam.com/video/J8Sl0HHxEJQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4DFbzjPf85Q3WnOh …“less is more“ seems to be here adapted in perfection (at least for me 🕺🏻)… maybe you can answer the „why“? 😎✌️
Switching from singer/songwriter style to more electronic music I was literally waiting for years for someone to make a video with explanation like this. Awesome job
Same!! This makes so much sense. It was so hard to get out of verse/chorus mode, and I found myself doing “anti chorus” where the energy dropped… and now I see why!
Perfect inspiration cooked down to the point where I need it! I always find myself with a really nice 4 bar groove, but I'm unable to write a good story without either killing the groove or overdoing it with tons of layers. If you have more knowledge or inspiration about tomb and percussive heavy but minimal grooves that would be very welcomed. Keep up the good work ma man
To me, this is one of the most useful-and possibly THE most useful-music production-related videos I’ve ever seen! And I’ve seen way too many! Thank you, Oscar!
THANK YOU FOR THE VISUAL GUIDE!!! Arrangement is definitely my biggest weakness. I've watched tons of vids on it so most of these concepts aren't new but seeing the changes sketched out definitely helps. Will try the drawing method to make a 'rough draft' of clips and ideas
I just wanted to thank you for all of the work you do. I ran into your TH-cam channel and then purchased the industrial techno course. I still feel like I can't produce shit, but I had virtually 0 experience before and you're one of a very few people out there that make complicated things sounds not overwhelming, which makes me feel like I'm getting there. Keep it on!
one of the most helpful videos I ever watched, i found myself multiple times struggling with how to do the arrangement and make it more structured thanks!! :)
I find your video very interesting. I have never actually thought about it this way, except to put my main good loop in the middle. This concept is very brilliant to avoid making boring tracks. I find that arrangement is crucial and it's the area I struggle the most. Thanks good work!
The drawings you’re making remind me of Xenakis’ scoring for his electroacoustic compositions or some of Daphne Oram’s work. Pen and paper is such a great tool.
I recently went to a rave party in a a small hall, I thought it was gonna be mediocre and boy was i wrong. I was so blown by how these guys were playing, . I never even in the past heard a dj keep the energy and momentum so perfectly balanced, no dull moments yea I'll say that again no dull moments not one, no one left the people that kept coming in staying and didn't leave everybody was dancing or moving. I could help to think very soon someone with big pockets is gonna pick these guys up and offer them a contract.
i must confess watching your channel that you made for the electronic music and our culture more than a major part of modern electronic artists. sharing your knowledges here you keep the real dance timeless music alive. cheers!
This video came up for me at the right time, as I’ve been plotting out concepts for some tracks in a similar fashion (only sometimes I actually use staff paper since I’m comfortable with notation).
When I see Oscar I’m sure it’s Monday and I know I’m going to have a good week. Thanks again to its great Foundation of Electric Music 1 & 2!!! I’m looking forward to the 3rd ;-)
For me whenever I get stuck on arrangement it usually tends to be because I haven't created enough parts for a song yet OR the parts that I have made for a song haven't been varied up enough. This plus working on fills between sections seems to help a lot
Realized I was naturally doing the 16 bar thing. Being conscious of it will make me way better at it, definitely want to try literally drawing it and the specific process you show. Makes me think of the ableton live session view (or what I'd end up using which is the tracktion waveform launcher)
Dude thanks for this one. I've been slowly learning this stuff over the years, what some of the puzzle pieces do and how to make them but when it comes to putting something together I've no idea where to even start, till now...
Just love this approach, Oscar. Simple, but effective. I'm currently stuck in an arrangement avoidance cycle. I love making little loops and EQing it, but then i just cannot face arranging it!!! It's so frustrating, and i have a feeling this might have just helped me overcome that Peace, Love and Sweaty Raver Hugs Mike
This is an excellent and concise description of techno arrangement. Very timely as I'm working on this very thing now for live construction of techno set. Super awesome. Thank you!
Fantastic video! Thank you for being so generous with your time and knowledge. You have succinctly captured such a breadth of information, absolute gold, keep up the great work!
The video this channel should (in my perfect imaginary world) have started with! Thank you so much for this ♥ A lot of different ideas might feel too much from a youtube creator perspective but for us who are trying to add as many tools as possible to our toolbox it's perfect!
Thank you for putting the complete track up on SoundCloud. I can hear all the tools you applied. Super helpful. To my ear, it sounds like the tools and the structure are operating at a longer time scale (16 bars) than the groove (1 bar). Maybe that's the "hypnotic" vibe you are going for, but I wonder what it would feel like if your groove were a full 16 bars.
Yeah! The core of this track is a polymetered lead, i think 7/16th notes long, so the rhythmic cell is close to half a bar, and then other longer devices are put on top.
Reminds me of Jeff mills the bells I was listening too the track today trying too think of old but gold tunes so still very fresh in my mind love your videos bro your vids always inspire me such a pleasure always thankyou. ☮❤💪🙂
The most important thing that you need to remember is that if you make dance music, you track will be played only for certain amount of time. A dj uses around 3 minutes max from your track before another track is mixed in. So first for techno in particular, dj's want to smoothly mix a track in and out and that will leave you with approx 1.5 min mix in part en 1.5 min mix out part. Between those minutes that's the place where your main focus must be. Dj music is not music you listen often from the first second to the last but you mainly will hear it between mixes. A lot of djs who produce dance music do not much more in the first 1.5 minutes then just starting with almost full beat. Introducing hat loops and an upcoming sound and then a break with an introducing sound, low end cut and then come back with the beat and build it up again until the break and then just start over with rearrangend parts until the end. While producers try to keep the song in such a way that it's made so that you can listen to many variations and still keep.that format running.

Billions of streams on Spotify disagree with you on that.
Computer says no
Not at all. Some dj's who use Traktor have 4 tracks running at once and one could be there for 7-8 mins.
Thank you buddy
Excellent video.
