⚓️First Look: Great Lakes’ Largest Ship in Duluth - Rare Boat POV!

- Boat Friends,
Experience an exclusive viewpoint as I captured the majestic arrival of the Paul R. Tregurtha into Duluth, Minnesota, right beside the iconic Aerial Lift Bridge. This event unfolded on April 30, offering a first-look rare perspective from our Boat Friends boat.
The Paul R. Tregurtha stands as a titan among the Great Lakes fleet, measuring an impressive 1,013 feet in length, making it the largest ship operating on the Great Lakes. Often referred to as the “Queen of the Lakes,” this vessel is a self-unloading bulk carrier specializing in transporting coal. Its design maximizes efficiency in cargo handling and speed, enabling it to play a crucial role in the regional economy.
On this day, the Tregurtha was navigating to the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal, a strategic coal handling facility located in Superior, Wisconsin. This terminal is pivotal for energy distribution in the Midwest, facilitating the transfer of coal vital for power generation across multiple states. The terminal’s sophisticated infrastructure allows for the rapid unloading of cargo from lake freighters like the Tregurtha, which can deliver up to 68,000 tons of coal in a single visit.
From the Boat Friends boat, I offer you a vantage point that brings you into the heart of maritime operations, showing the Tregurtha’s approach and skillful maneuvers as it prepares to dock and unload. This video is a celebration of maritime prowess and the unseen orchestration that supports our modern way of life. Join me and our Boat Friends community to witness this monumental event from a fresh and thrilling perspective. Explore the grandeur of the Great Lakes shipping through a lens that only a few have the privilege to share.

Well I had a pleasant visit with Duluth, the PRT and you in the boat. Many other sites are stressful and negative while yours is just the opposite. Thanks for the video, to you and the Boatfriends group.
Thanks friend! Making family friendly content is important to me and it will always be a cornerstone of the channel. Positive fun, good people, ships, that’s the recipe for this channel. 👍⛴️
Mike it's Dean from Ladysmith WI can you please send me your phone number please so I can call you when I get to Duluth in 2 weeks
@vibewithmike So true Mike, not to be corny the narration is wonderful.
What a nice note. I'm here for the reasons you mentioned.
Boat Friends, this is the start of something really fun. The ability to gain yet another perspective for watching ships. Thanks Mike for all you do. You bring us experiences that the vast majority of people would never be able to see in person.
The fun level viewing ships is going up starting now
Hi Mike and boat friends !
AWSOME AWSOME VIDEO !
You are right in your element out there !
The boat friends boat runs runs clean and smooth !
Do you trailer launch or do you have a birth ?
Is that particular humming bird side scan ?
The vhf is a nice touch also !
As Chuck said you are giving us and shareing experiences a lot of us around the world would never get to experience
Out of the channel In the lake you can see how narrow the channel is for the big ships !
The captain arriving the other night in the dark with following sea must of had his hands full !
Shows the level of skill involved it is even tight getting in when it is calm
Have a great day!
Ps: any day when you are out in your own boat when it is calm is a great day (except a sail boat )
What a cool new perspective indeed!!!
The sound effect of the horns from the water was truly awesome. You never get the echo effect from the hills when you are on the piers. Great perspective as always and thanks for spoiling us again.
Sky! I’ve seen you for a long time on the harbor cam commenting, you are a true ship fan, you have the same passion I do, you know what I mean when I say that these ships really get into a person’s soul. I hope you’re having a wonderful Friday night.
The new perspective of the boats from the water is cool to see
Thanks as always for watching the video, my friend
This adds a whole new dimension to the videos!
We are going to be almost limitless with what we can do this year with the ships on the water, it’s going to be awesome Sharon
Thank you, Mike, for everything you do that makes our very special community so great. All of us appreciate you so much. I, personally, learned so much more about the harbor I grew up with and the beautiful ships that absolutely grace us with their presence. I love that voice of the Harbor Master as he welcomes the ships. His is a very familiar voice. Have a blessed day!!!❤
The ships are so majestic Susan, I know they’re big steel structures, but there’s something so sweet and wonderful about these huge beast ships. They’re implanted very deep in my heart.
@@vibewithmike I know how you feel. Every time I get close to Duluth, the adrenaline kicks in from the excitement of just knowing one curve on 35 and the lake is finally in sight. I've loved this lake and the ships for decades.
@susanpugh130 that’s exactly what happens to me, when I drive up from the Twin Cities, when I get past Hinckley, that’s when I start knowing I’m close
And now I've got boat envy.
Don’t worry, my friend, you were going to be riding along with me all the time on that Boat checking out the ships
@@vibewithmike Oh goodie! (I'll bring a lunch).
@glemire7511 👍⛴️
@glemire7511 ⛴️👍
Wow Mike. Seeing “The Queen” from this perspective was truly an experience! The reverb on the horns pretty awesome too. I actually got goosebumps it’s like being there without being there. As always, your hard work, dedication and creativity is much appreciated!
I’m glad that you brought up the horn situation, I didn’t really think about it too much until after, but they’re definitely was a different sound from the horn being on the water where I was at. You would think it would be the same thing, but I felt something different. That was so fun and I’m glad that you brought up that point.
That what made it so awesome Mike. Calm, cool day with low clouds will do it😊
Will the bridge answer you if you blow your horn?
@ginog5037 first they will have to hear it 😂
The bridge will only return for those big ships
Thanks Mike that gave us some fantastic views of the PRT! Loved the view of you following the PRT while riding in her wake! ⚓🚢⚓
Ken, I told you this was looking forward to watching this one. It’ll give us a whole new perspective of what’s going on. I can follow the ships. I can check them out right next to where they load, it’s going to change the game, man.
Wow that was a really fun time. I hope you will be doing more of these from the boatfriends boat. This is my favorite ship.
This was one of the funniest videos I’ve ever ever been able to record of a ship
The boat POV was awesome! I am also very glad that you stayed a very safe and respectful distance from the PRT. Some people would have gotten right up on her and been a nuisance to the captain and crew.
It’s extremely important to me. That safety is number one. Also, the respect to these captains is also a priority to me. I will make sure to never be in their path or to have them worry about me moving in their path. I make sure to stay stationary for a long time before they arrive so they can tell that I’m sitting there. There’s nothing like a nuisance boater out there and I definitely will never be that. I have too much respect for these captains out there. They have a hard enough job as it is.
Thanks for the new POV Mike! Hope you enjoy the pontoon!
It was my pleasure recording this. It’s going to make things so fun being able to show the docks, ships, loading, etc.
Hey Mike, and ALL THE GLOBAL BOAT FRIEND NATION, from a windy and showers Bismarck. Well you did it, you BROUGHT THE THUNDER big fella!! A very unique and entertaining video you will not see on any other spot and that’s the truth!!! Folks can really gain another perspective on just how huge this vessel is, as it is longer than 3 city blocks and add in 3 stories of buildings and machinery and you get the idea…. The boat is the star of the show, and the boat Mike is in is the tool no one else has in the Canal. Mike I am without words it was that good….. And also congrats as you will surely eclipse 30K subscribers which is a fantastic accomplishment as well. Nicely done big fella, go grab some rings at Grandmas as you deserve a treat!!
We are going to keep this rocking and rolling Chuck, there’s no slowing down, those ships keep moving, and we are going to keep moving as well. I can’t wait to get out on the water in the summer when the wind is light and the temperatures are high. I can’t wait. Have a rockstar Friday night.
Wow! You just out did I'd! Many thanks!
@mr.lynnrosaasen8218 👍👍👍👋👋👋👋⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Your new boat is just begging for a party...pleasant ways on the Great Lakes...Greetings from the Pacific Northwest.
I hope everything is great there for you in the Pacific Northwest! Yes, we need to have a Boat friends party at some point we got to make it happen. However, up until then, I will be out there on the boat, catching ships in a new way that we have never seen before.
watching in 2160p! Thanks for the view!
I’m glad that you liked the 4K quality, I think high resolution is legit, unfortunately unfortunately when I live stream TH-cam limits me to 720, I wish I could go 4K
Wow the new on-the-water views from your boat are very interesting, and adventurous. Congrats on expanding the views. Really great. Cheers
It’s going to make ship watching so awesome and different for us this year. There will be no limitations for us.
Loved seeing the PRT and especially seeing what the harbor looks like once they make their pivot.
It was fun showing you other places besides the pier. We were able to see the ship go under the bridge and it was so cool to show you the animals too.
Hey Mike! That was absolutely awesome! What a great perspective of being down on the water next to that beast!! Great job! 👏👏
Doug, you and I have been commenting back-and-forth all week, I told you it was going to be fun. Think of all the things we can do on this boat now.
@@vibewithmike it’s gonna be a great boat season for sure! I’m stoked! I’m here for the ride brother!!
@Douglas_79 ⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍👍👍
I really enjoyed the spectacular point of view from your new Boatfriends boat. The PRT never disappoints! Being alongside really gives an amazing idea of what 1,013 feet looks like.
The Boat Friends boat is changing the game when it comes to viewing ships. I felt so small next to the PRT.
I just love your passion and enthusiasm for the lakes and the lakers.....
I really appreciate you saying that, it’s hard not to have passion when you get to see these big beast ships going by all the time. They are fantastic and wonderful. Thank you so much for your comment and have a awesome Friday night.
You're very talented, Mike, driving the boat and getting great video of the ship!
My favorite part of that video was that bird flying from left to right just over the water. That was so neat. Thanks for watching the video Kelly.
Great video Mike! Thanks for taking us along on your boat. It's so much fun to see the Queen from the water!
It was a lot of fun being out there on the water showing this big ship
Mike….. You must be in heaven cruising in your boat. I’m happy for you. I’m jealous!!!
It’s been pretty fun, cruising on the lake, I’m still waiting for one of those warm days. I haven’t had one of them yet. Even though their temperature might be warmer. It’s a little cooler on the lake. I hope you can join the link below at 3:30 PM central time to watch this video from the water, it’s the 1004 foot Mesabi Miner. Click the link, then click on “Notify me” th-cam.com/video/c2kUN7LdmU0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LkXMI7ijdsO6sOqW
This is going to be something. As always I enjoy seeing the surrounding area so a little footage of the shoreside is appreciated. Loved it.
Greg! Happy Friday night. It’s always fun showing the new areas around the lift bridge that people haven’t seen, especially from the water
Thanks for the up close an personal pontoon boat ride. Wow fun!!! When I was in Duluth w/ my Brother an wife, we heard the bridge horns alot over a week in summer. I'm a few miles fr. Train whistle an can hear at the distance of 10 miles fr. Downtown Kissimmee, just love them all. Something still greatfr. Back-in-the-Day...thanks again Mike..Blessings
Dee, you definitely know your horns if you around those trains. I love watching train videos as well. I’m glad that you were able to watch this video. It really was awesome being out there on the boat watching the PRT come in
@vibewithmike That was so cool, and the boat friends boat is so amazing! This really made my day to see this! It was such a unique perspective to see what the ship looks like from the boat! So fun! And I am so impressed you can see where those sandbars are! Safety first for the boat friends. You take such good care of us! Can't wait for the next boat ride! Thanks for taking us for a spin! And I didn't get seasick! 😄 Have a great weekend Mike and boat friends!
Well, there’s Lori! That’s always a great pleasure hearing from you. I hope you’ve had a wonderful Friday night. Yes, safety first! I’m really big on that. I check and double check everything. So many things are preventable if you do risk mitigation before you do anything that might require it. I’m really big on checking the possible wind speeds so I don’t get caught out there on the water. Well, it’s going to change the game for us watching these ships. When they anchor, who cares, I’m driving right out there and we’re going to go look! 👀
@@vibewithmike That's sounds great! I couldn't believe how calm the wind looked! The flag looked like it was missing! 😀❤🇺🇲
@LoriLeaPouttu there wasn’t even a little bit of wind has that flag hung down
Fantastic perspective from your boat, Mike. Simply outstanding!
John, I’m glad that you enjoyed it. When the weather and waves are good, I will be out there on the boat.
How can you not ❤this channel!!!
Another GREAT video Mike, too bad their isn't TH-cam awards. The weather is so crazy there from day to day.
I read that comment and I have a big smile on my face. What a really nice thing to say. Great video Mike, and I LOVE the Boat Friends’ Blue boat. What a great idea for enhancing your viewing numbers!
It’s going to bring us closer to these vessels like we haven’t been! I hope all is well in the UK. It’s raining here in Duluth right now, but the rain should let up soon. I’ll get back out on the lake brother.🇬🇧
That is a new way to watch those huge ships come in. Totally awesome!
I’m happy that you enjoyed it, there’s a lot more to come with these ships and my boat
Thanks for the alternative viewpoint. That ship is huge.keep them coming. Virginia usa.

It’s a little too windy on the lake today, but think of how fun this will be to check out all the different spots around the harbor now on the boat. We are going to have some fun.
Great video and perspective of the Queen of the Lakes!
The fun is just getting started with the boat, Suzanne
Loved the shots of the boat on the other side of the piers. Nothing beats a queen ship. Great video!
I’m glad that you enjoyed the ship. We were out there on the boat, checking it out.
What an amazing view of the PRT. You never stop surprising us with all your talents. The good thing is the weather for you seems to have gotten better. From us boat friends Mike you are the BEST!! Stay safe out there. Peace!!
Thank you so much for the wonderful and positive comment. I’m waiting for the rain to stop here on a Saturday to hopefully get out there on the lake a little bit, but we will see what happens. One of the things I really love capturing in these videos is the wildlife. The bird flying right above the water really was so interesting to me and looked really cool.
That was a fantastic perspective! Thanks much for bringing us along
Absolutely, my pleasure, have a rockstar Friday night, my friend
Queen of the Lakes! Vibe with Mike y’all, good times!
Thank you brother for your hard work and dedication, always enjoy!
My pleasure, I will always be out there when there is some good ship action. I can’t wait for the weather to get better though, being out there in a T-shirt will be even funner for me.
What a great new perspective. Thanks, Mike
I’m thinking about new ideas of what we can do on this boat, there is really limitless opportunities for us to discover these ships in a whole new way this year. I will make sure we have a great time doing it.
Completely different prospective from the water. Looking forward to the next installment. Thanks Mike

Fantastic wiev over the water and the birds! I love those gigants of the lakes! Thank’s for this one Mike😃👍!

Awesome vantage point and narrative . Witnessed the stop at St . Clair DTE and then off to Monroe.

Awesome job really enjoyed it was nice seeing a different view thank you
John, nice hearing from you pal. Happy Friday brother
Awesome Video! Thank you!
Well, thank you so much, Dawn! Have a wonderful Saturday friend
Thanks for the tour and being able to see the underside of the lift bridge. I've watched the PRT come into Two Harbors and it comes so close to parking area that it feels like it will hit. Until you get close it's hard to really tell how huge it is. To get another perspective on length 1013 feet is almost 1/5th of a mile. 😊😊😊
I thought people might like to see that underside of the bridge, I thought that was very fun. We definitely will see a lot more of that in the coming months. Exactly, the PRT, 1/5 of the mile. That is unbelievable. I hope you’re doing well.
Awesome! 👍🚢🙂❤
Cathy, it was a 10 out of 10 for me being out there from a fun standpoint. I’m thinking a new ideas that we can do with this boat watching the ships.
Very cool shot
I’m really happy that you enjoyed it. Being out on the boat now allows us to see the ships totally different.
Great video Mike! Great perspective from a boat! Keep up the good work.
Thanks Brian. The bolt has been performing really well on the water. I’m still testing it out. However, this is going to put us in places. We have never been to watch the ships.
Great video Mike. I loved your filming of the ship from a new perspective.
Katherine! It was so enjoyable recording this ship for everybody. I’m really happy and thrilled that you are enjoying it.
Did you mean ship and not shit?@@vibewithmike
Yes, talk to text. Does that a lot and I have to correct it. If you could edit yours too, that would be great. I just corrected mine.
I have this habit of reading into everything. Never considering it was a typo error. I thought maybe you inhaled too many fumes from the ships passing by.@@vibewithmike
@katherinekubeldzis7902 no, I’ve corrected 99% of those issues. It’s the same issue every time when I say the word ship, you can guess what else comes up. Most of the time I noticed that the talk to text use the wrong word I missed it on this one.
This is way cool!!!!!!!😮
I’m so glad that you enjoyed watching the ship from this new perspective. It’s going to change the game for us watching these Great Lakes ships. We are going to have some fun with these ships.
Awesome… 👍👍👍
It was really fun being out there on the boat. That ship really dwarfed my boat. It’s a giant ship.
Great looking pontoon Mike like the colors. Thanks for the ride from Arizona City, Az. @ 90 F
