Chad, it was an absolute pleasure meeting you and your wife today! I’m so thrilled that both of you were able to watch the Cort arrive. I wish you both a happy fifth anniversary! You both are wonderful people and it was such a pleasure speaking with you. So many common interest, as is the case for most of us people that love these ships. It made me very happy walking away knowing that you are going to be able to see more good ships and have pretty decent weather this weekend for your anniversary. It really made me happy thinking about that.

That’s correct, the first thousand foot ship on the Great Lakes
Duluth has some dedicated boat friends. I saw a video of people out watching a ship arrival at 3:50 am.
I’ve never been out that late to watch a ship, but I understand if people are doing it. They might just be in town that one time. However, if not, that is the ultimate boat lover in the world.
I missed the live feed yesterday, but am watching today at Ramstein AB, Germany!! I'm here visiting family for a couple of weeks.
How fun is that! If you’re able to see anything to do with vessels there, I don’t care the size or what kind of water it’s on. Send me a photo or a video. Enjoy your time there in Germany. That’s another place. That’s on my bucket list of visit someday.

The best part of never showing my face on cameras is that nobody knows what I look like unless they have met me before, so we’ll be able to really take some time to talk about the ship as it comes in. Gotcha! BTW I am continually FASCINATED by the grace and skill that these Laker Captains demonstrate in executing the pivot from the canal into the Duluth Harbor. As a small time sailboater for 35 years on Chesapeake Bay, I can directly attest to the incredibly delicate finesse such a beautiful maneuver requires. Bravo! And WELL DONE!
These captains are incredible with their ability to control these huge ships. They make it look easy and we both know it’s not.

Kelly, yes, I did see that. I also saw that it might be raining down on the Twin Cities. Maybe only momentarily. However, we should start seeing things warm up all around the Twin Cities and in Duluth. I can’t wait. Another thing I’m keeping my eye on is some of these fires that are happening in northern Minnesota. That could affect the breathing and visibility up here and Duluth. In 73-74 my wife and I were both Air Force SSgts assigned at Duluth IAP. We had a house on the north end. We used to cross the bridge and go out on the island for picnics. We really enjoyed our time in Duluth, wonderful people. Left there for an assignment in Hawaii in a snow storm on December 20, 1974.
Paul, how cool is that! This is a very cool and interesting comment in a lot of ways. The one thing I know for sure is you did not bring any snow shovels when you left for Hawaii. I really have to ask, I do realize Duluth is beautiful and you actually lived here, but it had to be another transition to a beautiful place that must’ve took your breath away being there in Hawaii. I’m sure there’s great things about both places, but you really got to live the fun life there determining which is better, Duluth or Hawaii. Sign me up for that! However, most importantly. And I really mean most importantly. This is to you and your wife. Thank you for your service! It means a lot to me and many others. It’s people like you that served our country that allows me to make videos like this, and others to do what they want. Thank you!🙏🇺🇸
@@vibewithmike Thanks Mike. My wife stayed in for 8 years, me for 20. It would probably surprise you how often we tell friends about our time in Duluth. Our neighbors were some of the nicest folks we ever met. Bike rides down 7 Bridges (?) walking on the ice on Knife River and out onto the lake. And a great 4th of July camping trip to Gooseberry Falls State Park.

I definitely want to get out on the boat, but it gets pretty choppy with the wind. The crosswinds can be pretty significant on the bay or the lake. Unfortunately, I don’t have 1000 footer.😂😂😂😂⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️

I cannot even begin to imagine piloting a vessel of this size. Our neighbor has a relatively small pleasure boat and was telling me about how tricky it often is to maneuver and park that in a slip when they are ready to go home, as the force of the water must be contended with- something that is not a hindrance when parking a motor vehicle on land. These captains are to be admired for their skill. Thanks for a good video!
Jenna, I don’t think I could say it any better than you just did right here. You laid it out perfectly. These captains have so much skill and it’s no easy task steering or navigating these vessels. There are so many lives on board that count on these amazing captains. They should be commended every single day all day.

Yes, and then throw in the variable of the weather: knowing how to wisely and safely pilot these ships through stormy seas and in adverse conditions (and also when to take shelter). I’m sure it is no easy task, and they are probably cognizant every day that human lives are in their hands….crew members who have families who love them back home. I hope the captains are well paid for the responsibility that is theirs.

I was 8 years old when the news of the Edmund Fitzgerald broke. Since I have been fascinated with the Great Lakes ferighters. Today's technology is so great because you can now track these ships where ever they go. My 2 personal favorites are the Anderson and Munson, both having just left in the last couple of days. Awesome video. While the lengths of these ships is cool, it is worrisome to me also. One funny note is you need binoculars at both ends to see the other LOL.
Timothy, I have pinned your comment to the very top of the comment section. This comment exemplifies a journey that all of us have taken to get to this point where we love the ships. In your case, a love was born for the ships when you were around eight years old. That’s very similar to me as well and I’m sure many others. This was a very special ship. I don’t get to see it too often. How lucky was it to actually catch it when the clouds departed, and there was nice weather with blue sky. So awesome to see this ship. I’m already looking forward to seeing it the next time.

What is all the water coming out the back end 2 pipes? Enjoy your monologue, entertaining is an understatement!
I believe that is water discharging from the cargo hold to actually load. It’s water in ballast. Essentially they need to have weight in the ship as it goes on the water so they fill it up with water inside and drain it before they load real cargo. That’s what I believe. Chuck or someone else can verify this.

Thank you for this video Mike. Looks like it was a sunny but blustery day on the pier! After watching the beautiful laker go by, a hot drink and a snack would have gone down a treat. I’m on the St. Lawrence River side of things so we see more of the ocean going freighters than the ones on the upper lakes. Either way, watching the big boats is a fun activity!

We lived on Norton Rd back when the Air Base was active. Our house was under flight paths and I remember the jets screaming overhead.
At first want you to know that’s a beautiful LinkedIn photo. I’m so lucky to be here in Duluth to see loons almost every single day. They are absolutely stunning and majestic. I have some familiarity with what you were talking about. I grew up a few blocks away from the Minneapolis St. Paul international airport. So many people would come to my house and complain about the noise, but I got so used to them, I never paid much attention.
have a big ole placemat size picture of the Cort up in my shop that i got many years ago at a gift shop on Mackinac Island as it was going thru the Poe lock,she's one sharp lady.

That horn was pretty legit. It’s so cool to hear each of these ships really really do have a distinctive different sound. I’m really waiting for the JRB to come through so I can document how loud that horn is again. I want to be right by the horn so I can get loud as possible decibel level. I hope you’ve been doing good and possibly are working on a new good quilt. I see some warm weather ahead in Duluth so that’s making me happy.

She left the Sturgeon Bay shipyard late this year. They did a lot of work on her in the dry dock. I saw this year, but she is a real interesting ship.
Chris, that’s cool. I wish I could get over to Sturgeon Bay to check that area out too. Think of all the awesome ships that came out of that place.

I really wasn’t planning on recording a ship this weekend, but when I heard this vessel was coming into Duluth, there’s no way I could pass it up. Now that it’s done, I’m glad that I did a live stream for the ship today.

Very pretty video. We all need to chip in and get Mike a Steadicam. I always thought the Cort looked longer than the other 1000 foot boats since there is no big cargo boom on deck. All crew quarters are forward including the galley. Originally she had three wheeled bicycles for the engineers to commute back and forth the length of the ship. Originally sailed with 4 EMD 567D3 engines (16 cylinders each) making a little over 10,000 hp compared to the later 1000 foot class that usually have the larger displacement EMD 645 E3 (20 cylinder) making 14,400 HP. The paint looks beautiful.
Do you know what it was right? I had a full cup of coffee just before I went to do the video so I might’ve been shaking a little bit. Also, when you do live streams on TH-cam TH-cam, sometimes the video is a little finicky with the movements. If you go look at my 4K upload videos, those are steady.
I'm just messing with you Mike. You do such a nice job with your videography, there is nothing wrong with this video. Would be cool to have a dolly for a tracking shot but you would need lots of help keeping folks out of the way. Best!Sandy

Ron, I wish there was but no cam‘s specifically set up for those jets. I really was looking for the Jets during this video and I did see one, but I realized it was too far away to really zoom in and see it you hear them, but they are not by you because they have went by so fast, they are awesome.

Hey friend! I’ll tell you how this went down. I initially was going to relax yesterday and skip doing ships this weekend but when I heard that this vessel was on its way to Duluth I couldn’t skip it. It was initially going to superior Wisconsin, but it had to come in for fuel, which was really lucky and also the sun was out at the same time. How can you not love this ship because of how unique it looks and yes, it is the first thousand foot ship on the Great Lakes. It started everything with the big boys. You made a fantastic observation. You are absolutely correct. This is not a self unloader. Next time I record this ship I’m gonna mention that. This is a huge point and I’m glad that you pointed this out to all of us friends. It has such a unique look that I always forget to mention that. I think I’m captivated by that forward pilot House always as it comes in.
Believe it or not, she self unloads from side extending shuttle booms from the stern area. Faster than a conventional boom system. But this limits her to only a few ports that are set up to receive her load. These days it's mostly going to Burns Harbor to unload. @@vibewithmike

Bob, there was no way that I was going to miss the thousand foot ship coming into Duluth. I rarely get to see it coming into Duluth let alone live stream it on a Friday. It worked out good and I’m glad I could share it today.

Hello my friend! Always good hearing from you, specially on a Friday. That weather sounds fantastic there indoor country. I can’t wait for consistent 70s and 80s here in Duluth. I’ve been looking forward to this time of the year so I can finally break out the T-shirt and record all the time without worrying about the cold. They’re always will be wind, but I’ll take that. It’s gonna be great getting out on the boat this year, showing ships as well.
They must have fun steering that from the front.
I think you can see better from the front again that’s just my perspective. I’m not up there driving but I think I would prefer where I could drive looking from the front on a ship.
@@vibewithmike A long narrow boat has the steering rudder at the rear so the boat pivots in the middle that can be 500 feet behind the steerer notice the lake boats have a long flagpole jutting out from the bow that helps in steering.
