Hi Mike, sorry been away for a little while on a family vacation. The weather here has been hitting about 90°. Not great, but much more tolerable than in Phoenix. Last week we were on the cruise ship and spent the day in San Francisco. I was quite happy with the 62° temperature there. in fact the whole cruise was actually cool. So now I'm playing catch-up with all the videos. Hope everything is well with you!
Absolutely, bridge was awesome both morning and night. The firework display in the Bay was probably the best I've ever seen especially viewing it from a cruise ship.

I just discovered this video from several months ago. Fascinating, as prior to finding this channel, I had never before seen a lift bridge. (We have a drawbridge locally- where the road goes up at an angle). I was interested to see what this process looked like. I surely do wish that I could visit Duluth and see these sights! (Also fascinating to learn that people surf on the Great Lakes, as I associate that with the ocean. I would not wish to do it….would be afraid of hidden currents).

Correction to your comments. The exhaust one sees coming out of the stacks is not "steam". That is heavily laden with moisture air. Steam must be contained under pressure and heated above boiling temperature. Great Video

This a cool video to watch. We have similar functioning bridges on the Welland Canal, as well as some "jackknife" bridges. However your aerial lift bridge is much larger in terms of the span and the actual height and the lift height. In addition the two towers on the Aerial Lift Bridge are connected by the upper structure. The smaller Welland Canal bridges do not have that. Also, sadly our bridges are all automated, no more bridge operators on the bridge or salutes. The Oberstar is looking good too! Love the styling of her pilothouse!
I totally didn't expect the bridge to go up the way it did! I was expecting one or both sides to go up to vertical, or for it to swing left or right, but NOT straight up! Wow!
Mike, I just started seeing your videos only a few days ago and I have learned two things already. The steering pole on the ship and I didn't realize there was a horn on the bridge! I always wondered why I heard two different horns. One from the ship which sounds like a fog horn and the horn from the bridge that sounds like a horn from a freight train. Now I know!!! Thanks for the information!!!

Hi Mike. Really enjoy your videos. Question for you: to your knowledge has the 135' clearance ever not been quite enough such that an antenna or other item on the vessel's flying bridge or superstructure didn't make it under? I'd also like to echo one of the other comments who suggests a you post an interview with the lift operator. Thank you.
I would love to interview the Lift Bridge operator, but I’m just a regular guy with a camera. Not sure he/she would even consider that? There have been no issues with clearance because vessels have information provided regarding the height of each bridge they would pass under. I appreciate you watching Steve.

@@mikewatson4644 Oh, I understand the economics of why they build the squared-off stern, I was only bemoaning the loss of the beautiful curved rumps on the older vessels.
OUTSTANDING!!! Thank You for such a great video. I was wondering, while I was watching this particular video, if you happened to have other bridges, and then I see that you have. I am a lover of Amtrak, especially Amtrak 3 & 4 rail systems, Chicago to Oakland mostly, I rarely miss them, along the route there is a bridge in Fort Madison, Iowa, which has what I think is called a swing bridge. It's amazing to watch it slowly open to allow those hugh river barges through. Oftentimes the railcam operator will do some fantastic closeups. But mostly in the interest of the trains that travel across it. The upper level of the bridge handles vehicles, the lower bridge accommodates freight and passenger trains. I am wondering if you have any videos of that particular bridge, I believe its Iowa on one side, and Missouri on the other side.

Enjoy watching these huge vessels come and go. They seem so quiet as they pass through the canal. Do the shipping companies have to pay to pass through on their journey? I would assume so in order to allow bridge maintenance
Great questions about impossible charges for using the Bridge. The answer is no, the city of Duluth owns the Bridge and is responsible for the maintenance via taxes. There is no charge to pass under the bridge for the big ships or people in small boats. It’s a truly remarkable Bridge and really fun to watch in operation. What app are you using sir to track the freighter? That’s so neat and I’d love to see how far they are when watching the Aerial Bridge live cam! Thank You sir!
Hey, I hope you subscribe and come back friend! The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. I hope you enjoy! All the best friend!👍👍⛴️⛴️
That is soo cool to see the bridge go up !!!
Antwuan, great hearing from you! I’m just now realizing how many people have not seen the bridge in action! It really makes me happy knowing people are learning how the operation works for this incredible Lift Bridge!
Cool... How about shooting another vid from the bridge house? Interview the operator...
Because I’m not a journalist the chances are almost zero because I have a TH-cam channel they would have to allow other TH-cam channels to do the same with them. It’s a city owned bridge. I don’t think the city would allow it.
Thank you! Loved seeing how the bridge works!! ❤
Thanks Ann! I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
You often invite people to fast forward if they like, but I don't know why anyone would do so. These videos are fascinating. I spent a lot of time in Duluth when I was young, and can't wait to go back when I finally retire. Thanks for creating and posting these.
What a truly uplifting and positive time you just left. Thank you so much for saying this. I know that a lot of people like to get the things right away, but I always love the buildup to get to the ship.
Very cool! I like seeing how to all works! Also, I enjoy the tidbits of history and info that you give! Thanks for your time!
Kim, I really appreciate you watching friend. All the best to you and yours. I really have fun with these ships.
Thank you for showing the actual bridge going up and down. Very interesting.

Love the view of the operation of the Aerial Lift Bridge! Another old school laker. Cap't Mike, you rock.........
William, happy Monday friend! I’ve seen the Lift Bridge so many times that I never have thought about doing a video like this. However, I did think there might be a few people that wanted to check it out but I had no idea so many really did want to see it in action like that!
I'll give you another idea: go down to the docks where some of these vessels load and unload and see if you can get some interesting shots. I'll bet your followers would like that as well. Some folks say: I'm full of it. Just trying to help another mariner.
I’ll keep my eye out for the loading ships for sure!
Thank you Mike. I really like seeing the lift bridge go up. I love the videos of all the ships the go by. I wonder what it is like going up inside the building. Thank you again Mike.
Barbara, you are in luck! Check this out! This explain the Aerial Lift Bridge operations center. The small house in the middle of the bridge. That’s where the bridge operator controls it. This video brings you right inside. There’s a person in there 24/7.

Thank you, Mike!! Another beautiful boat in the books. I was rather befuddled today when you did not finish your sentence while watching the bridge raise. You forgot to say "While I munch on this Salted Pretzel and Cheese Sauce". Another great video Mike! Thank you for showing the lift bridge in action. Definitely enjoy the behind the scenes look at things and also love the old school lakers.
What’s up Brett! Nice hearing from you man. What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods today?
Hi Mike, sorry been away for a little while on a family vacation. The weather here has been hitting about 90°. Not great, but much more tolerable than in Phoenix. Last week we were on the cruise ship and spent the day in San Francisco. I was quite happy with the 62° temperature there. in fact the whole cruise was actually cool. So now I'm playing catch-up with all the videos. Hope everything is well with you!
It must’ve been awesome going under the Golden Gate Bridge on that cruise ship!
Absolutely, bridge was awesome both morning and night. The firework display in the Bay was probably the best I've ever seen especially viewing it from a cruise ship.
Were you able to view the Golden Gate Bridge without the fog?
I really appreciate your videos behind the scenes in Duluth. I didn’t realize all the stuff I missed before just watching the Duluth cams. Keep up the good camera work!

My parents rode the bridge as pedestrians when they were teenagers. Mom said that it was a bumpy ride, and that the bridge operator yelled at them. The Oberstar was originally owned by Shenango Furnace, and was named Shenango II.

I definitely remember this video. That was a fun video to record. This is a good one as well. Imagine having this view every day when the bridge is all the way up. That bridge keeper has a pretty good. m.th-cam.com/video/tKJh_5b5wak/w-d-xo.html

@@vibewithmike Thank you. I was raised as a boy aboard ships. My dad was a Master out of N32 x W 80. Myself, I'm just one o' them "Damned Engineers" so I can appreciate bridges.... You always have good work, thanks again.
What a wonderful childhood! You must have great memories! Hey, those “engineers” built the world.
Correction to your comments. The exhaust one sees coming out of the stacks is not "steam". That is heavily laden with moisture air. Steam must be contained under pressure and heated above boiling temperature. Great Video

I grew up right nextdoor to a draw bridge and shipyard, we used it as are own playground, swimming, diving off the bridge, 75 ft at high tide, watching the tankers come and go, they built huge LNG tankers with giant spheres for the natural gas. 1970's. They built the pocket aircraft carriers for WW11, submarines, General dynamics, Quincy, Mass, foreriver bridge.

It’s amazing watching these beautiful old-school ships. I like how this one looks particularly.
Yes no doubt! She is a beautiful ship indeed. Nice to see that Interlake keeps their fleet in good condition too.
@greggrauscher34 they definitely keep their ships and good shape. It seems like the morale as good as well at that organization.
I totally didn't expect the bridge to go up the way it did! I was expecting one or both sides to go up to vertical, or for it to swing left or right, but NOT straight up! Wow!
It’s amazing! You will have to take a first hand look one of these days.🚢
That’s awesome that you are checking these videos out. This is one that I definitely want you to see. It exemplifies the ice, the snow and look how wild the conditions are out on the lake with that sun and see smoke.
I appreciate you watching Steve.
....that's impressive - I was gonna ask about counterweights - but glad I waited...
Mohammed, those counterweights are crazy huge man! Super impressive when you’re standing next to them.

That was pretty cool watching the bridge. The chain attached to the counterweight is massive thing isn’t it? Wonder what it’s purpose is.
Everything is connected to the chain. That’s what keeps the counter weight going up.
The rounded aft ends on the older ships are so much sexier than the cheap, squared-off sterns on the newer vessels.
There is so much character when you look at those Lakers!
The squared-off stern is to give the maximum amount of room for cargo and still fit in the locks that they navigate.
@@mikewatson4644 Oh, I understand the economics of why they build the squared-off stern, I was only bemoaning the loss of the beautiful curved rumps on the older vessels.
It would be so awesome to be able to ride the bridge up and watch a ship go under.
Joe, interesting that you say that brother. Years ago, you could pay money and actually go on the bridge as it was going up.
Hello there from Port Huron Michigan!
What’s up brother! I hope all is well in Michigan. Have a wonderful weekend. All the best to you.

My favorite place is superior but I come over Duluth to look at the northshore usually. That boat is really long it's got to have bow thrusters.
Superior fun! The best burger in the Northland is in the city of superior anchor bar.
