⚓️What happens before Lift Bridge goes up for Ship? James L. Oberstar arrives Duluth, MN

- The 806 foot ship James L. Oberstar arrived under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. I started this video off by showing you what happens when the Lift Bridge prepares for a ship to arrive/depart. You will see how vehicle traffic stops, bells start ringing and an audible announcement starts playing via speakers that tells people that the bridge will be going up. I then record the bridge's full rise to 135'.
The second part of the video shows the ship arriving through the ship canal and point out very cool features on it.

It was in the early 70’s when my parents, siblings and myself got to ride on the bridge as the laker passed below our feet. The Eastwardly pedestrian walkway had a section caged off for the safety of tourists. The walkway and roadway is constructed of steel grating, so you could clearly view a vessel passing below. Us kids made sure we stood where the Laker’s stack would pass. This practice was discontinued many years ago, I’m now 63. Thanks ever so much for jogging a GREAT memory!
It makes me do happy to read a wonderful comment like this. It's like reading a mini novel. What a great story. All the best to you my friend!
Yeah, you used to be able to ride the bridge: I was under it once looking up at folks! My uncle was the Construction Super for the BN construction in Allouez, Wisconsin: the bucket loader and belt transport for ore. I can recall seeing the Fitz in drydock and other places around the harbor a few times: my uncle got to meet a few of the crew and it was from that old GN dock that the last voyage commenced.
Met Jim Oberstar a regular guy and a credit to Minnesota - RIP Jim
I wish I could’ve met him
Great Footage Mike. Here is another video idea. An interview with the bridge lift operator. I think your followers would enjoy that.
Matt, that would honestly be a dream come true. I’m not a journalist. Not sure they would grant an interview to a regular guy with a camera?😂😂😂😂👋👍⛴️
I seen various lift bridge channels but I enjoy yours the best because of your enthusiastic commentary. Nice!
Ha! You absolutely made my day with that comment. I think some people will tell me to drink less coffee though. I have a lot of fun out there. Thank you so much for watching my friend.
James Oberstar was a serious bicycle rider (up to 2,000 miles per year) and sponsored many bills which funded trails in Minnesota and throughout the United States. As a serious biker myself, I am very appreciative of all his efforts in this area.
Boat friends, here’s what Chuck is talking about. www.americantrails.org/resources/james-l-oberstar-congressman-and-advocate-for-trails-and-bicycling
@@vibewithmike that's a great article Mike. Really shows his involvement in cycling and hiking trails.
I didn’t know Oberstar was a big bicyclist!
@@vibewithmike we all are constantly learning on your channel Mike.
Chuck, people that love boats and ships are the best
Thanks for showing the lift bridge. While the various ships are the stars of your videos, they wouldn’t be the same without the faithful costar- the lift bridge. Take care
The Lift Bridge is awesome
Love the classic Laker style of the James Oberstar. Thanks as always Mike, for providing the fun facts that you do, and also for the look at the lift bridge today. We appreciate all you do in capturing these videos!
I love the big ships but my heart is with the old lakers Corey
Thank you for the link to the lift bridge operators area! These ships are all impressive.
Most interesting, bit of a mechanical marvel that bridge !
The lift bridge is honestly spectacular from an engineering standpoint! It’s so impressive.
Brilliant shot of the bridge cant believe how quiet it is when she goes up 👍👍👍
You are right! It is really quiet for being that huge and steel!
That is soo cool to see the bridge go up !!!
Antwuan, great hearing from you! I’m just now realizing how many people have not seen the bridge in action! It really makes me happy knowing people are learning how the operation works for this incredible Lift Bridge!
Great to see the lift bridge Mike. I had wondered if that was a vehicle bridge or just pedestrian and now I have my answer. Looks like a nice northern midwest day there 😀. Thank you for sharing.
I’m really glad that this video gave you some insight. I’ve seen the bridge many times, but I have to consider others that have not. That’s why I made the video. It makes me happy hearing that you enjoyed.
Hey Mike! 👋 I am glad that you captured what happens when you get "bridged". I had not seen it before. She is one of those ships with the forward pilot house that I love. She looks really great for being built in the 50's. Those waves look like they are helping to push her into the harbor. Happy to see that she made it in safe and sound. Hope you had a great Monday. Take care my friend and chat later. 🙋🚢
Karen, what is funny is that I was bridged yesterday! The Indiana Harbor was going through in the morning and I happen to be the first car as the gate came down!😂😂😂😂😂⛴️👋
@@vibewithmike Too bad you didn't have your camera on. 📸📸. That would have been interesting.
Karen, I thought the same thing! I did not have the camera.
@@vibewithmike that's too bad 😞😞 hein sight is 20/20.
Mike, not sure if it’s the feel of “originality” that your video content brings or your embracing and descriptive commentary, but you have to now be one of the best videographers bringing this type of content, watching from here in England, UK, your capturing the feel of moment that others there to will be feeling and thinking, great work, but also great fun, keep it up, much appreciated. Bob
wow! I really don’t know what to say. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this comment. When I go out there to record the ships I really just stay in the moment and say what I’m thinking. I don’t have any formal training as far as photography goes. These vessels have a way of presenting themself which makes it easy for me to record. I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️🇬🇧
What a beautiful ship named for a truly great Congressman. I worked on Great Lakes issues for several years and there was no bigger champion for the region and the industry. Nice video!
Dan, it’s great to hear you confirm the story about congressman Oberstar!⛴️
My father, born in 1909, who lived in Superior and then Duluth till he graduated from college, told me that at one time people were allowed to ride the bridge up, but then after an unfortunate incident the practice was stopped. I have made numerous trips to the area and have seen quite a few of the vessels you feature; quite a sight for someone from the high and dry Texas Panhandle. Thanks for the posts, they bring back good memories.
I found an article of people riding that Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge. www.duluthnewstribune.com/news/local/northlandia-once-upon-a-time-you-could-ride-aerial-lift-bridge-for-quarter
@@vibewithmike Wow! That was fast! Thanks for looking up the information. He must have ridden on the ferry bridge at some time, also. as I said, I always enjoyed visiting the ship canal, always a high point of my visits, the museum was of special interest. Keep the videos coming and thanks.
No problem David! Thank you for having interest in the ships and Duluth! It’s wonderful meeting a new friend like you. All the best.
What app are you using sir to track the freighter? That’s so neat and I’d love to see how far they are when watching the Aerial Bridge live cam! Thank You sir!

Great video Mike. I was wondering, like a few others, if you could do an interview with the lift operator. That would be interesting.
I would love to do that! I’m not a journalist, so I don’t think they would allow it.
Love the old school ship's . Thank you I wonder about the bridge and people walking or driving 👍👍👍👍
The lift bridge is so mesmerizing Larry. I really love it.
The aerial bridge is the world's coolest erector set.

I agree, it has my vote as number one!
Another great video Mike! Thank you for showing the lift bridge in action. Definitely enjoy the behind the scenes look at things and also love the old school lakers.
What’s up Brett! Nice hearing from you man. What’s the weather like in your neck of the woods today?
Hi Mike, sorry been away for a little while on a family vacation. The weather here has been hitting about 90°. Not great, but much more tolerable than in Phoenix. Last week we were on the cruise ship and spent the day in San Francisco. I was quite happy with the 62° temperature there. in fact the whole cruise was actually cool. So now I'm playing catch-up with all the videos. Hope everything is well with you!
It must’ve been awesome going under the Golden Gate Bridge on that cruise ship!
Absolutely, bridge was awesome both morning and night. The firework display in the Bay was probably the best I've ever seen especially viewing it from a cruise ship.
Were you able to view the Golden Gate Bridge without the fog?
Thank you so much for posting this ! I watch on web-cam everyday and I have often wondered what its like to see a ship close up from the pathways and how it all looks around the bridge which is limited on cam !

Love the view of the operation of the Aerial Lift Bridge! Another old school laker. Cap't Mike, you rock.........
William, happy Monday friend! I’ve seen the Lift Bridge so many times that I never have thought about doing a video like this. However, I did think there might be a few people that wanted to check it out but I had no idea so many really did want to see it in action like that!
I'll give you another idea: go down to the docks where some of these vessels load and unload and see if you can get some interesting shots. I'll bet your followers would like that as well. Some folks say: I'm full of it. Just trying to help another mariner.
I’ll keep my eye out for the loading ships for sure!

I grew up right nextdoor to a draw bridge and shipyard, we used it as are own playground, swimming, diving off the bridge, 75 ft at high tide, watching the tankers come and go, they built huge LNG tankers with giant spheres for the natural gas. 1970's. They built the pocket aircraft carriers for WW11, submarines, General dynamics, Quincy, Mass, foreriver bridge.

Hi Mike. Really enjoy your videos. Question for you: to your knowledge has the 135' clearance ever not been quite enough such that an antenna or other item on the vessel's flying bridge or superstructure didn't make it under? I'd also like to echo one of the other comments who suggests a you post an interview with the lift operator. Thank you.
I would love to interview the Lift Bridge operator, but I’m just a regular guy with a camera. Not sure he/she would even consider that? There have been no issues with clearance because vessels have information provided regarding the height of each bridge they would pass under. I appreciate you watching Steve.

I just discovered this video from several months ago. Fascinating, as prior to finding this channel, I had never before seen a lift bridge. (We have a drawbridge locally- where the road goes up at an angle). I was interested to see what this process looked like. I surely do wish that I could visit Duluth and see these sights! (Also fascinating to learn that people surf on the Great Lakes, as I associate that with the ocean. I would not wish to do it….would be afraid of hidden currents).
I definitely remember this video. That was a fun video to record. This is a good one as well. Imagine having this view every day when the bridge is all the way up. That bridge keeper has a pretty good. m.th-cam.com/video/tKJh_5b5wak/w-d-xo.html

OUTSTANDING!!! Thank You for such a great video. I was wondering, while I was watching this particular video, if you happened to have other bridges, and then I see that you have. I am a lover of Amtrak, especially Amtrak 3 & 4 rail systems, Chicago to Oakland mostly, I rarely miss them, along the route there is a bridge in Fort Madison, Iowa, which has what I think is called a swing bridge. It's amazing to watch it slowly open to allow those hugh river barges through. Oftentimes the railcam operator will do some fantastic closeups. But mostly in the interest of the trains that travel across it. The upper level of the bridge handles vehicles, the lower bridge accommodates freight and passenger trains. I am wondering if you have any videos of that particular bridge, I believe its Iowa on one side, and Missouri on the other side.

Wow i love the look of that ship, Thank You for showing her off! How is the steering rod used??
The steering pole is to line things up on the horizon for the captain or helmsman. Basically, it’s the centerpoint for them.
Correction to your comments. The exhaust one sees coming out of the stacks is not "steam". That is heavily laden with moisture air. Steam must be contained under pressure and heated above boiling temperature. Great Video

I totally didn't expect the bridge to go up the way it did! I was expecting one or both sides to go up to vertical, or for it to swing left or right, but NOT straight up! Wow!

Jerome! That’s awesome! Boat Friends, here’s one of the lift bridges Jerome is talking about here: historicbridges.org/bridges/browser/?bridgebrowser=louisiana/bayouvermilionla14bridge/
@@vibewithmike In 2015 I would leave Abbeville early with my 16' Boston Whaler hooked to my '96 Windstar. I got stopped at this Bridge by a passing tug w/ barge. A trucker loaded out of the Rice mill came up and asked if I knew my trailer axle failed. I looked to find my right tire was at a 45% angle. Lucky my mechanic was up the road. I thanked the trucker for saving my life as flying down Hwy 82 would have lead to jack-knife city.
Jerome, I literally can visualize everything you are saying. What a great story!
The rounded aft ends on the older ships are so much sexier than the cheap, squared-off sterns on the newer vessels.
There is so much character when you look at those Lakers!
The squared-off stern is to give the maximum amount of room for cargo and still fit in the locks that they navigate.
@@mikewatson4644 Oh, I understand the economics of why they build the squared-off stern, I was only bemoaning the loss of the beautiful curved rumps on the older vessels.
Man cool thanks it's better then the bridges that split, nice on the water😊😊
50! Thanks for watching my friend. Yeah, there’s a lot of bridges that open in the middle. Tons of drawbridges in Florida. I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
@@vibewithmike I will I'll sub😊😊👍
Awesome! Great meeting you! Have a great Thursday!👍⛴️👋
@@vibewithmike you too be safe😊
I like to see a tour of the bridge house and the bridge.
Hey, check this out! This explain the Aerial Lift Bridge operations center. The small house in the middle of the bridge. That’s where the bridge operator controls it. This video brings you right inside. There’s a person in there 24/7.

Enjoying your videos. What is the amount of shipping traffic that goes under that bridge on a daily basis?
If you time your visit to the canal correctly, (schedule below), you may see some of the 900 vessels that travel underneath the Aerial Lift Bridge annually. visitduluth.com/plan-my-trip/lake-superior/watch-ships/
@@vibewithmike Thank you.
Mike, how much bridge clearance when it is down. Great videos. OleDave
I was told 25 feet but I will verify for you. Maybe somebody else knows on here?
