⚓️Danger! Single Horn Blast at Small Boat! Ship John G. Munson departs Duluth, MN
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 20 ก.ค. 2023
- The 768-foot ship John G. Munson departed under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN. The captain of the Munson blasted a long single warning/danger horn as it rounded the turn heading towards the Duluth Ship Canal. This was due to a small boat entering the canal as this larger ship was approaching, so it must have made the Munson's captain nervous? You can actually hear people on the north pier yelling for the small boat to get moving.

Hey, Mike! The MUNSON was built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co
in 1951-52. My grandfather was a riveter at MSB from 1915-1959, and drove a lot of rivets on the MUNSON. He told me she was always his favorite. A lot of beautiful Lakers were built by MSB, the ADAM E. CORNELIUS, JOHN J. BOLAND (2), DETROIT EDISON, and EDWARD L. RYERSON. Quite an impressive list of boats. And it's an engine room gangway!
James, that’s absolutely amazing! I’ll think about your grandfather next time I see this vessel. What an unbelievable connection to have. It means something much more significant when you see her go by. Your grandfather was a hard worker and his colleagues did a great job, take a look at that ship still sailing strong!👍👋⛴️ I’m pinning this to the top of the comment section because it’s such a great comment and connection to this vessel!
@@vibewithmike Thank you very much, Mike, that means very much to me. My grandpa and I were very close, he taught me a lot about the boats, and it's a passion I carry to this very day. His finest moment in time, though, besides riveting on dozens of Lakers, was the fact that he drove rivets on every one of the 28 submarines built in Manitowoc during WW 2. He retired just as the keel of the ADAM E. CORNELIUS (2) was being laid. Reason? She was to be welded together, not riveted!
See, it’s hard working men like your grandfather that built this country. Tons of respect for that man from me, and I know other Boat Friends that are reading your comment as well.
James’s grandfather was lucky to be of retirement age when they quit using rivets.
James, I know someone who has an Adam Cornelius life ring.
When the panic and stress of daily life stresses me to the point of anxiety, I know that I can always tune into one of your videos and chill a bit. Feels good. Thanks
This means a lot to me and it’s actually a huge part of this channel. When I started doing these videos I wanted to make sure there was never any controversial content and it had everything to do with building a community of friends and basing that off of our love for the ships. I promise I will always provide fun and new things to watch with the ships, but I’ll always keep it Positive so we can get away from whatever during that video. And hopefully, it makes a person feel better after.
Now that was a show. Love the deep rumble of the horn.
Beautiful traditional style Laker.
Thank you Mike!!!
Todd! Bro, I know you would have been pumped up with me watching how that went down in the canal.
Thank you, Mike. Always great to see the beautiful JGM. Such a gorgeous color and profile.
Dan, this ship is a poster version of an old school laker. History in motion brother!👍⛴️👋
I love the burgundy, black, and grey colors on this ship line. They're so distinctive.
I’m a huge fan of the color scheme too. All ships with this look I really love!⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
This good looking lady and crew deserve all the respect that they can get. What a fine looking and well maintain vessel she is. You keep out doing yourself Mike. Stay safe from that smoke after awhile it can really start bothering you.
I hope the smoke clears soon! It was crazy to hear the warning horn during this recording. It’s a great looking ship. Happy Friday night!
I love the Munsons deep whistle. Wow so many salutes. Thanks to him and this beautiful ship. Hope your air clears up.
Thank you Mary! The smoke is a lot less today in the sky.
Fair winds and following seas to the John G. Munson , safe journey to her master and crew. Another great video Mike.
Art, to John G is one of my favorite ships for sure. It just has such a great classic look.
Mike, I know I've said this before....and will more into the future.......but this was one of my favorite videos you've done. A lot of action. Started right off with one prolonged blast which is a warning signal (for example, used when coming around a blind bend). Better to warn, than have potential issues. And the horn of the Munson sounds so awesome. Deep. Not like a railroad horn, but a laker horn! And if I had one last vessel to watch, it would be the Munson. Classic lines, so very well proportioned. Even the self unloading boom looks good. Doesn't take away from the lines. Great pilot house. So well maintained. All in all....a real beauty Mike. Thanks for making this video. I loved watching it.
Chuck, it makes me happy knowing you like this video!
Lot's of horn action! Anyone else not a fan of the sound of the bridge horns?
My ears were really warn down after all the horns from the ship and bridge! It was fun though. Happy Friday friend!⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍👍👋👋👋👋
I like the way sometimes the bridge horn tries to copy the ship.
@evecalvert1350 There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.
I think the bridge horn is a train horn that's what it sounds like.
@aces4715 you are very right, the bridge has multiple train horns on it when it makes that noise
What an amazing sound! I love that the Captain knows we're watching and gives us some extra noise!!❤❤ Thanks , Mike, as always!!!
The sound was super loud Susan!
Mike
Commented the other day on the complete relevance of your commentaries, they make the actual video part complete, loved the way you intertwined the main focus, the ship itself with what is actually also happening around, smoke, little boats, people and scenery both close and afar, really excellent viewing, cheers for now from the UK. Bob
Bob, I do remember your comment! It makes me happy to see that you are back. I hope we get to chat more often. I try my best to set the stage like a live news reporter. That’s the format I’m going after. Whatever I’m seeing and thinking, I’m relaying. I’m glad you enjoyed. I hope everything is great in the United Kingdom right now.🇬🇧⛴️👍👋
Now that's a cool captain !! Giving the crowd a triple horn salute!!🛳📢🎺
If I could’ve gave that captain a high five, I surely would have!
A real solid Master Salute from the Munson, what a deep booming horn she has.
The Munson’s salute is so awesome
This was awesome! Beautiful ship, great commentary & camera work as ever. Thank you!
Candace, thank you so much. What a wonderful comment. You are awesome.
great video Mike!
extra horn rips!!!
plus gorgeous sky colors
life is good 🚢 ⚓️
The caption wasn’t hold him back with the horn in the canal! I might get too pumped up with those horns! I’m OK with that though!😂😂😂😂😂👋👍⛴️
FYI - A single horn blast to another boat is a signal that they plan to meet each other on the port side. Two blasts is they plan to meet on the starboard side. If they want to sound a warning, they give five or more short blasts.
Thanks for the info! After doing more research it appears a longer single horn blast means “Entering or exiting a blind turn.” www.boaterexam.com/navigationrules/sounding-off/ That’s what was happening in this video. Thanks for the info! I have not seen you in awhile. I look forward to the next time. I hope you and your family are doing well. 👋👍 Anyone seeing this comment please subscribe to 1 Long 2 Short! He’s my favorite TH-camr and a really nice guy too!
Thank Mike! It’s been a while since I’ve been in Duluth, but I hope to return again soon. You’re right about the meaning of one prolonged blast. Listening carefully to that horn blast again, I actually suspect it was a one long, two short captain’s salute… but the echo kind of blended blasts together at your vantage point. Perhaps she was meeting the Vista Star in the harbor. It’s hard to be certain, as her horn has a fluctuating tone to it. Regardless, the Munson was definitely generous with her horn on this visit.
I hope to see you soon! Thanks for the comment. You made my day! Thanks for everything you do with the ship videos. I watch every video you put out. Your work is incredible, especially how your transition the views during the video. You’re the best out there man.
@@vibewithmikeThanks for the kind words, Mike! You’ve really turned your channel into a big hit. You’re certainly beating the rest of us when it comes to views! 🙂
Great show from the Munson and the bridge. I'm wondering why someone in a little boat would get in the way of a heavily loaded ship?
There’s a good chance that smaller boat didn’t know the big ship was coming. However, when the bridge is all the way up the rule of thumb is that the big ship is coming.
One master salute and two captains salutes. Sweet
Geoffrey! I wish I could see this every day man. It was really exciting.
Boating Rule: Big Boat Always Wins!
Yep! Also, big boat always first!⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍👍
Hey Brother,
The John G Munson is such a cool ship. I love the low bass tone of her horns.
My favorite horns are the Baker’s.
Take care! Thanks for the video.
Hey Art!!!!!! I know it has been extremely hot in Texas. I hope you are finding a way to stay cool. Goodness, I wish I could give you some of my winter right now! Those Lakers have such a wonderful horn. Powerful. I’m very happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. I really appreciate your comment and friendship.👍👋⛴️
I loved visiting Duluth. Especially watching the ships sailing by..
Sharon! Awesome! I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
That extra horn noise made me smile. Great video Mike
Same here! I was not expecting that many horns!📣📣📣📣📣📣👋👍
We just saw it Wednesday going through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie. Very impressive.
I have to get to Sault Ste. Marie someday Edward!
Hey Mike. Not sure how I missed this last week. The JGM was a superstar on that horn this time. Makes me reminisce when the lakers are filled with iron ore headed for US Steel Gary Works
The JGM is pure class from a vessel standpoint
Thanks
Your narration was just the correct amount. Appreciate the “stats” on the ship. We have the smoke in NC as well, but not as intense.
Robert! Thanks for the wonderful comment. I try not to talk too much but I can get carried away sometimes. 😂😂👋👋⛴️👍
I hope you guys get a break from the smoke. Have a good weekend.
You have a great weekend too man! Smoke is a little better today. ⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
Such a beauty! I’m passing through Superior and Duluth tomorrow. Hope to see a few ships!
Thanks C T!!!!!!
Great job by both you and the Captain, wonder if he was saluting you? Are you or were you in the maritime industry? Thanks for sharing your videos with us!
I have never been in the maritime industry, and frankly had nobody to even talk to about ships until I started doing videos. I grew up in Minneapolis. Zero ship experience. Just fell in love with ships as a young boy. It’s still hard for me to believe that a record ships on TH-cam!⛴️⛴️👍👍👍👍
We sure as heck got our db's on this video. Very cool. 👍👍👍 !!!
David, hey bud! Yes, we sure did. I’m a big fan of all that horn action! 📣📣📣📣📣📣📣⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Always love your content. Keep up the great videos.
Randy, I’m glad that you enjoyed the video. Have a wonderful Friday night brother.
Outstanding work. Thank you for sharing. 😊

Great piece. Kudos to the captain for showing some love to his fans on the pier. Too bad about all of the smoke.
Greg, I can’t tell you how pumped up I was to hear those horns man! Well, now that I think about, I guess you could hear how pumped up I got in the video. 😂😂😂😂👍⛴️
Boy,if we have a winter like this summer it’s gonna be bad. We’ve had bad storms and rain most of last week and 5-6 days out next week according to forecast. We’ve had a wet summer. Most of the reservoirs out west are full. Hope for a good winter.
I’m really hoping winter isn’t bad. The weather has been crazy all over the country. Happy Saturday my friend. All the best to you.👋👍⛴️
The Munson has my favorite horn!
Another great one mike thanks buddy😊
Billy, thank you brother, have a wonderful Friday night
Lol it's so cool and fun to me to see the ships and boats together 😂⛴🛥
I would love to be onboard this ship!⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️
Great video! Wow, that horn!
Even the Seagulls we’re looking at each other there were so many horns!
thanks for the video and narrative! 🐬🐬🐬
Mary, thank you so much for the nice words friend! I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
6:40 THREE SALUTES???? Wow way to go Munson!!!
The ship is so legit!
Capatain is a great sport like Captain Newland on the James R Barker!!! Thanks Mike!!!
You got it Rob! The captain was awesome!📣📣📣📣📣👋👋
love the Baratone horn on the Munson
Frank, the ship is such a powerful horn. I love it.
Great salutes by the John G Munson, going through the canal there, Mike. That small boat must have been crazy to try to sneak through there, if it got hit, it would be like a train wreck. whew! Thanks for sharing your video, I see the smoke is back, ugh. We don't have that here today, thankfully. Big heat wave coming next week here. Take care!
Corey, when I heard the first long horn blast before I saw the ship, I knew something was off. I looked over and saw that small boat. Then I realized it was a warning/danger horn blast alerting the small boat. I really enjoy this video. I’ll remember for a long time.
Loved it!!
Thanks Kelly! I hope you come back to my channel and watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun. No agenda, just chilling out with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Hi Mike, Just want to say how much I enjoy your efforts. Well Done. Do you offer tours of the Duluth Harbor? I've lived in Grand Rapids for approximately 78 years and have never seen the harbor. If you offer tours, I sure would like to go along. Best regards, Ron
No tours, just having fun with the camera on my boat. There’s are tours of the harbor right here. www.vistafleet.com/
Those smaller boats need to wait...I recon that's why the ship sounded his horn do much👍
I believe you were right. I definitely would not want to get in the way of a big ship. I hope you subscribe and come back to my channel to watch more ship videos moving forward. It’s all about having fun with the ships!👍👍👍⛴️⛴️⛴️
Munson is a beautiful ship
Talk about beautiful, take a look at the tractor in your picture! Is that a pull event?
@@vibewithmike yeah that was from years ago in Ellsworth WI. I need to change my pic
No, leave that! That’s awesome. If you change your photo, then I’m going to use your current tractor photo! 😂😂😂 Check this baby out in Denmark! Talk about power, I’ve watched this video a few times in the past. th-cam.com/video/cqYvDQttcvo/w-d-xo.html
The munson is a beautiful ship with classic great lakes bulk carrier lines.
How long is the trip from Duluth to Cary, Indiana?
How long is the round trip?
We have investigated boat and ship trips. There is a supply ship in Polynesia where you can book passage on this supply ship
traveling the islands as a passenger as it supplies other boats in the fleet for over 1 or 2 weeks.
It is much different than a cruse ship. You are on a working vessel.
Oh my goodness Wendy. I would love to go on one of those boat trips.
That is insane! The Munson has right of way doesn't he? He would squish that little boat like nothing... Probably has the best horn out there! Old Johnny G letting it rip hahaha! Hope you have a fantastic day Mike! 🙌🙌
Absolutely, that huge ship has the right away. However, I don’t think that small boat new? Then again, when the bridges all the way up, you should know. I’m glad everybody is safe.⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦
@@vibewithmike You are probably right but I would give way either way! 😅
I need to get you on one of these ships from South Africa to Duluth!
@@vibewithmike That would be cool but I imagine it would both take a long time and cost a small fortune! I googled it for fun haha
TIME AT SEA:
DISTANCE:10832 nm

DAYS AT SEA: 45.1
That is one hell of a journey! Its 20060.864 in kilometers.
Whoa!!!! I’ll have the espresso ready for you when you arrive!😂😂😂😂😂😂⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍
Really sorry that you guys are still dealing with all of the smoke from Canada there, Mike. We have experienced the same thing from fires coming from south of the border here in Texas before. It really does create an unusual and undesirable view to the atmosphere.
That was cool in your initial video showing what looks like a “beach” to the left of the bridge there. I did not realize that was there.
So many of those “Laker” ships have what is very similar to a U.S. Coast Guard livery, although in different colors on their bows with that slanted stripe.
Again, just excellent narration and history on the ships and surroundings that you provide. No one else that I have seen provides this. Maybe they do, but I have not seen their videos yet.
Cheers, from Texas to. you Mike.
See, you have to deal with the heat right now in Texas, and also the smoke? That’s a double whammy. I’m really really hoping things cool down for you. I really do. All the best brother.
@@vibewithmike
No, we are not dealing with the smoke now, but we have in years past. I know how hazy and nasty it can be with what you all are going through. Hopefully, you’ll get some relief from it soon.
Take care, Mike!
It’s better today. Less smoke is a good thing here! Happy Saturday.
5:30 I *never knew* that there was a light that mirrors the bridge's horns. Now I know!
I just found this out recently. Kind of cool looking.
Good one that ! Crikey, deep baritone horn resonates ! Nice looking vessel, when in the basin,do they need the assistance of tugs to berth,or do bow thrusters mean they go solo ? Also,do you visit the piers on a daily basis,or just research the traffic movement's and film when and if etc.Good stuff.
Norman, first of all happy Friday brother! I get down to the pier is a good amount without even recording. There have been times that I watch the ships go by without recording because I want to have fun. Thanks for watching man.
I may be wrong, but if you look at the right side of the screen when you zoom in a bit around the 3:32 mark, did I see flashing lights, as in some type of small craft law enforcement vessel, that had "pulled over" the boat that played chicken with the Munson?
Whoa!!!!!!! Good eye!!!! I see that! Red lights flashing. It’s either the vessel got pulled over or some type of feedback from the lights along the pier down there? Excellent observation. Absolutely excellent.
Love that ship
The Munson for sure in my top three ships!⛴️👍
Beautiful !! ❤️ I love this shipsafe travels to good captain and crew !
Absolutely, much respect for all of the captains and their crews! They have a tough job, and I know we all respect them! They bring us great joy

Hello fearless leader! 👋 I couldn't tell if it was smoke or just very overcast. i am getting very tired of the smoke. People! The JG Munson is bigger than you!!! Get out of the way!!! She is a great looking vessel Nice master salute. WOW! A bonus whistle. And then a third!!!😲 ``You've got to love that captain!! ❤❤ How awesome!!!! All I saw was normal things that would be on a ship. Nothing special. GREAT, GREAT video!! Hope you had a great Friday. Take care my friend and chat with you later. 🙋🚢
It definitely was smoke. You can actually smell it too! I was down in the Twin Cities this week and I didn’t notice it too much. How was it down there today? It’s going to be very hot all week in here in Minnesota. I hope you got your air conditioning going Karen! Happy Friday night in St. Paul!👋👋👋👋👋⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍👍
@@vibewithmike I could tell that there was a little bit. Yeah, I am not ready for 98 or even 100. I heard that we could get that hot towards the middle of next week. That is here in St Paul. I hope the ac can take it.
I saw report that I could get close to 100 degrees in the Twin Cities next week. It’s not as hot as Peter.
@@vibewithmike No that's true, but I think they are more used to it than we are.
Almost an intimidating horn. Especially when you hear it before you see it.
You’re right! Powerful intimidating horn. I was setting up the app and then the single warning horn blast happened! You can tell I had to quickly lift the camera up.
Mike, I have question. How many crew this ship? Are their quarters front or rear. Is there any way to go from back to front other than the deck? Really enjoyed whistle exchange and additional blasts!
🤔👍🇺🇸
Good questions. I believe around 15 is the average crew? Wherever the captain steers a ship is the side where the quarters are located. This ship would have quarters on the bow side. 👋⛴️👍

Thanks Mike, you always clear up my questions ... appreciate it.
Hey, I still have a ton to learn, it’s fun to learn together. It makes it fun. I’m no expert. I’m just having fun friend! Awesome Friday night to you!
I think this could be a fun perspective; if you drew a line from the center of the canal into the harbor and found a safe spot (in your boat?) for your camera, I think it would be fun to watch the 1000 footers make that graceful turn into the center of the canal. I am fascinated with the skill needed to steer such a long ship into such a narrow lane.
I thought about doing this. You are right. That would be legit.
@@vibewithmike In my younger days, in order to pass my truck driver training, I had to parallel park a tractor with a 50' trailer into a parking spot in only one continuous move. All 5 curbside tires had to be inside of 12" of the curb; touching the curb with any of the tires was a failure.
When I watch these massive ships with their massive tonnage moving at a continuous controlled speed, I truly appreciate the precision required to not over or understeer. These guys are SO good!
Jerry, I respect anybody that has anything to do with long-haul driving. That’s a tough job. You really got to be on top of your game on the road. Much respect to your brother. I have problems backing up my SUV.😂😂😂😂👋👍

@@vibewithmike I keep forgetting that the Great Lakes has access to the Pacific/Atlantic. Do y ou know how many days/wks from the Mouth of the Lakes from the Atlantic? Pacific?
13? I’m might be off though.
Munson, Clarke, Anderson. Love’em. Ever notice how low the freeboard is when they’re loaded?
Someday I want you to leave Germany and come and check out these ships with me man!
Yes, the freebored sometimes looks pretty low
The reason that the lake ships look lower is their molded depth is shorter (deck to keel) than the ocean ships. So when they are allowed to load to full mid summer draft there is usually only 10-15 feet of free board. Also the ports on the lakes are generally shallower than the ocean ports and are ultimately constricted by the depth at the locks, Sault and Welland Canal. Most of the ocean going ships are partially loaded.
Sandy! Thanks for the great information friend!
You are welcome. As far as the crew size I can only imagine how small they have gotten since I got out of the game. The USCG says, 3 first class pilots, 3 licensed engineers (one must have a chief's ticket) 3 ABS (able bodied seamen) then probably three, deckhands / conveyormen although one may be required to have a QMED ticket (qualified member of Engineering Department) No stewards, no porters, no wheelsmen,. no oilers, no wipers. Sure cuts down on the size f the life boats and grocery bill, and everybody gets their own room. Heat and serve meals, no thanks. All this to compete with the tug-barge lash ups.
If not giving way John G Munson and others large vessels you'd be obliterated. Show respect to the big guys in and out. Nice deep bass type sound from JGM. Nice to give extra horns 👍👍. As always great job Mike...🇨🇦⛴️🇺🇸
The horn on the ship is incredibly cool. I wish I could have that on my phone for a ring!
@@vibewithmike😂😂 I'd advise you get thicker windows in your place then..👍

I always wondered how jgm would soind with danger signal
That initial loud single horn is the warning/danger signal you heard. I figured out what was going on when I saw the small boat coming through the canal. That’s the first time I’ve seen that. Lots of excitement, but I didn’t know what was going to happen either. The same goes for the big ship’s captain. Those big ships need to have that entire canal.
Beautiful Ship, what was the Cargo? Looked kind of light.
I believe it was ore? Let me verify.
I'm not sure but was the white thing a crane or something 🤔...
Yes, the the self unloading boom.
Hi Stephanie. It had left loaded with iron ore bound for Gary, Indiana. That will make the steel mill very happy.
Sees them on the radar.. before it turned
Good to know!👍👍👍👍👍👍
Why do they blow the horn ?
There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. As being a formerd boater I've found that some boaters have no idea what rules of the waterways as well as common sense are or don't think they apply to them.
I’ll bet the small boat captain understands now what that bridge all the way up means!
2:52 na he had plenty of time!
It was fun to see what happened, glad all was good
1 whistle is a port to port pass. Not danger
You are right. Something I learned about after. Thanks for pointing it out. Take a look at this video that I was able to capture a while back. Take a look at the sky in the conditions on the lake. It was crazy. th-cam.com/video/mKzamgCa6zw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BBc9Ad5U5kdLOmlt

I’m guessing that small boat didn’t know the big ship was coming through? However, when that bridge is all the way up, it’s clear there’s a big ship coming. I don’t blame the captain for the warning horn. Have a wonderful Friday night brother!

that is not a flying bridge its a bridge
A flying bridge, also known as "monkey island", is an open area on top of a surface ship that provides unobstructed views of the fore, aft, and the sides of a vessel. It serves as an operating station for the ship's officers, such as the captain or officer of the watch.
nope@@vibewithmike
@clementgoetke2385 I’m not an expert at all. However, I do know where the ship is controlled is called the bridge. The roof above that is called the flying bridge. Is that incorrect? There are numerous sources saying this.
Someone in a 30 foot boat should have stayed on power with a ship heading towards the small boat. I would have stayed on plane doing 60 plus to get away from it
I’m sure the captain on the small boat got pretty nervous when he saw the big ship coming!
@vibewithmike I would be scared too seeing it coming towards me. I would push the throttle forward faster than normal
Me too!
@@vibewithmike I have watched a video of you being on your pontoon boat while you were videotaping a ship going by you. Then you followed it into the harbor. That was a cool shooting from the boat. Have a great evening
Bob, I will do more of those videos where I follow a ship. It’s just a different perspective for us to check out. I have fun doing it, that’s for sure.
Way cool triple salute - I'm with you Mike - high five...even a ten! Enjoyed the video - thanks for sharing. Cheers...
Ross! Heck yeah man! Double high five for the captain, plus he had to keep his eye on the small boat in the canal too!⛴️⛴️⛴️⛴️👍👍👍👍
@@vibewithmike I got to thinking about it after watching and I'd bet the Captain picked up that small boat on radar and, knowing the 'rules' about the raised bridge signaling a LARGE vessel is outbound, decided to sound that long horn blast. I call people operating boats like that small cruiser 'jackaloons' because they act like...jackaloons🤣🤣😂😂
It can be really scary for a captain of a big ship, preparing for that turn under the Lift Bridge. That’s not easy to do. Heck, I’m in a pontoon and it’s not always easy. I have a lot of respect for the captains on those big ships.
@@vibewithmike Well...that's a blind turn coming out of port with lots of visual interferences. Even having bridge/helm station forward doesn't make the Captain's job any easier leaving that port exit. I'd love to take one trip under the bridge and through the channel in a 1000 footer with the bridge/helm station on the stern just to watch how the Captain executes that turn! Cheers...
You and I both, a trip on 1000 foot ship would be a dream come true!
