How Microphone Setting Can Improve Call Quality in AirPods Pro 2

  • NOTE: This works on the Apple AirPods Pro 1 as well.
With both the AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2, in high noise environments, I have had the frustrating experience of callers unable to make out what I am saying because my voice was “choppy”, syllables missing from words, or whole words missed. In every case, I was able to hear them just fine, which only added to the level of violence I wanted to take out on the AirPods Pro.
Well, I found a setting that made the difference between me having to walk away from the equipment I was servicing in a data center and stand in the hallway just to allow back-end support to understand me, and being able to remain with the equipment and communicate audibly despite the heavy ambient noise of the data center (~70db to 79db vs 60db for workplace noise).
The magic setting is the “Microphone” setting. By default, Apple AirPods Pro 2 are designed to switch microphones between both left and right AirPods based on audio quality. This is fine for normal use. However, when the ambient noise is so strong as to degrade any voice sample, the algorithm starts bouncing the active microphone between left and right AirPods resulting in lost syllables or words from the end-user. What is more frustrating is the end-user will likely hear the person on the other end of the call crystal clear.
The fix was to simply force the AirPods Pro 2 to use one mic with no switching between AirPods. In my case, I was able to carry on a conversation with back-end support for over four hours. While I was told they could hear the ambient noise, I was also told they could hear my voice just fine.
Perhaps this will be of benefit for you. Please like & subscribe to my channel to get more such “field tested” content. I will gratefully counter-subscribe back to you, watch content on your channel, and leave likes. That way, we all succeed together.

Oh my Gosh. I just changed mine. I hope this works. I am shocked that no reviewers have brought up the fact that no one can hear me when I’m in an open environment!
    Thank you!

The mic on the AirPods is terrible. It’s very irritating to talk to someone who uses AirPods. The hissy, stuttering sound and the fading in and out just feels like a lack of respect for the other person. I’m not sure why Apple can’t make better microphones. The wired EarPods have awesome microphone quality.

Thankyou man it’s much appreciated your video helped me out on my AirPod pro 2nd gens mic lowering my voice so bad that the other person couldn’t hear me I would have to take them off to finish my call and I’ve sent them back to Apple to fix twice they said check them out and nothings wrong and they said they replaced them the first time but even if they did ever since I updated them to the newest firmware I’ve had problems so this quick fix of switching to only use one mic helped me out and just for all others that are doing it you can open your voice recorder and test your voice with your AirPods on and with just your phones mic they should sound the same but if when your AirPods are in your voice gets lower then switching to just one mic makes a big deference thanks man for the help 🤘🏼❤️‍🔥

Thank you for the video. I am going to try this. I purchased the airpods pro 2 last December, and just recently mine started doing this even if I am just in a zoom meeting or on a phone call in my car. My wife would tell me that my voice would keep dropping out. Someone else had mentioned that the silver ring at the bottom also has a microphone slot to it, and that can get debris in it which causes syncing interference between that mic and the one closer to your ear. Which I had tried that first and it hadn't worked. So I will try this next. Thank you so much for your video. I have looked on Apple forums, and nowhere have they mentioned any kind of help for this.

Please let me know if it works. I swear for the cost of the AirPods Pro 1 and later 2, I had dark thoughts of rage stomping them whenever I could not use them in the very environments I needed most. Now, I am relieved they delivered.

The mic on the AirPods is truly terrible. EarPods all the way. It’s very irritating to talk to anyone using AirPods, especially on conference calls.

Thank you for the tip. There is a new feature using voice isolation when updating to iOS 16.4. Could you test it in a noisy server room?

Will do. I should be in a data center over the next few days and will see how that feature holds up and report back.

Every person that I've talked to who's wearing airpods, the background noise is horrible. The noise sounds as if it's amplified 10 times over. I don't know which version they have or which iPhone, but it's painful to listen to.

    • @technologistonthego2377

There are some settings they may have chosen by default. I find that simply using noise cancellation allows people to hear me very clear regardless of the ambient noise.

Are you in a high decibel environment? If not, the mic may be going bad. If you’re still under AppleCare, reach out to Apple as there a good chance they’ll replace one or both of the airpods. I had that happen with my Airpods Pro 1, and Apple replaced both pods.
