    The fact that Huey went from
    "Skull face killed her and put her in the pod."
    To
    "Skull face killed her and I put her in the pod."
    To
    "Strangelove killed herself after shutting herself in the pod."
    In the span of under a minute is insane.
    Huey is good for nothing, not even lying.

    I just love how Ocelot gets progressively more and more pissed off as he pulls apart Huey's bullshit in these tapes. Most of the time Ocelot's the one that has to be the cooler head when Miller starts getting worked up, but by the end of the interrogation you can just tell that he's just as eager as Miller to blow Huey's head off. It really says something about how utterly despicable Huey is when someone as unscrupulous as Ocelot is disgusted by him.

      +CegeRoles Off topic, but I sort of feel like this game is representative of Ocelot's true personality. All of the other games, he's essentially playing a role in order to keep his cover in tact. But I feel like when he's on Mother Base and with Kaz/Venom Snake, he is more or less showing who he really is and how he truly behaves once the facade is off. I notice that he's not nearly as brutal and is generally more understanding of others than he is in previous games.

      +IcedEarth426 Ocelot is and always will be a great big silly weirdo. He's abnormally relaxed in this game, being a flat character with the only thing reminding us if him being his silly outfit. I'm not sure if it was meant to show us that Ocelot is actually a more laid back person, or that Kojima just had to give in to Konami budget pressure resulting in a stinted character.

    • @ricardoquezada108
      @ricardoquezada108 9 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      +IcedEarth426 Kinda weird seeing Ocelot, of all people, be the heart of the group. In every other game, as you mentioned, he's a cold tactician who's doing his job but here, he's sparing Quite's life, raising a giant wolf/dog, and getting pissed off at Huey (which makes sense when you consider his father, the Sorrow, sort of died to save his life). That's quite some character development.

    • @Horyzun
      @Horyzun 9 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      +KNIGHTMAREMANIAC Ocelot is and always has been on Big Boss's side. The character that we saw in MGS1 and 2 were an act, a means to an end. He was never really on Liquid's side, nor was he on Solidus's. I think this more reserved, thoughtful version of Ocelot is for the most part the "true" Ocelot. It would have to be for him to mastermind so much later on in the series.

      Their families in general are pretty nuts. Strangelove was pretty manipulative (& her obsession with the Boss was pretty weird), Eva was-well, she was Eva, being a spy, carrying the clones. Both were sort of raised for someone else's ends, with Otacon being the one to carry on the Boss' will, Snake being raised a soldier from day one...Heck, everyone in Metal Gear has some pretty crazy history. I love how similar Snake & Otacon are, though, despite being so different. Their friendship is pretty sweet, considering the relationship between their fathers.

    Huey. All of the psychopaths, terrorists, and malfunctioning A.I.s, and HUEY is the only one in this series that truly scares me. Why? Because I worry about becoming like him. I'm afraid of a lot of things, but one huge thing that I fear is becoming a sniveling coward willing to sell out my friends for my own skin, then play victim when faced with the truth. I worry about hurting people and then lying to myself, saying that I did the right thing, or that this is someone else's fault. It's ironic, really, since I frequently blame myself for things that don't concern me. I've lied about things in my life (who hasn't?), but several things that Huey does (i.e., shifting blame onto others, thinking I'm a victim of someone else, etc.) are things that I've also done. Huey Emmerich and Martin Walker are two video game characters who have made me realize what I can become. And that scares me to death.

    • @MysteryEzekude
      @MysteryEzekude 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I think we're *all* worry about hurting people, but, in the end, it's all down to choice. Even when it feels like we have very few options, that doesn't mean we have no choice at all. That's what I learned the hard way five years ago. And, since then, I've been true to myself and others even when the truth hurts. Whatever happens, it's down to us what we become.

      @Speeddemon105 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I know what you mean. Heaven forbid I ever be put in a situation where I have to sell out people I care about to save my own skin. Still, if it somehow did come to that, I'd like to think I would at least not delude myself and try to make up for it somehow, rather than avoiding blame and running from my guilt like Huey did. If there's one thing I hope to never do as a person, it's to stop caring about others and how my actions can hurt them.

  • @Roler42
    @Roler42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +254

    It's interesting just how many discrepancies and dissonance can be noticed in Huey's words on every re-listen of the tapes and his overall behavior.
    I mean it's interesting, for someone being "forced" to do research for the soviets, he seemed super proud of his accomplishments, so much so that the soldiers stationed in there can't help but talk about his boastings.
    That's on top of just how comfy and cozy his lab became, he was allowed a shiny new pair of legs, his wife was brought along and they even managed to have a kid and raise him in that lab, he even gets to continue his research unscathed after his wife hides his child away from him while he left her to die in the pod, for all his "lost" 9 years, he sure gained a lot...
    Many fans think it's out of character for Huey to become a villiain, but in reality all the red flags are there in Peace Walker, Coldman outs him as a scientific fraud, using research stolen from Granin, then when he joins MSF, he almost instantly proposes building an AI weapon for MSF, that's on top of him insisting to put a nuke on said weapon despite Snake's own reluctance to being trusted with one, anyone repentant for their own actions would have wanted an out as soon as the nuclear threat was done, but not Huey, he always had something to gain, always looking out for himself.

    I wanted to comment on Huey's supposed dramatic shift in personality. I saw it as more of a slow burn.
    Through out his life he had this idea that he could blame others for his unfortunate circumstances. His deformity of his spine which took his ability to walk was the result of his father's work on the atom bomb. His plagiarized work was justifiable in his mind because of the pressure he felt. Trying to use his own son as a test subject for a weapon. His obsession with Strangelove which eventually led to her murder by his hand. I'm sure he rationalized everything he did like all psychopaths do. I'm leaving out a lot but if you look at his life and the way he omits certain facts and tries to play the victim its clear he's unhinged. It was slowly building towards this.

And I was the one who understood and supported Huey when he wanted the inspection to happen (But make no mistake, I hated the fact that he sent the letter without consulting with Kaz and Big Boss). He actually looked like a victim to me in Phantom Pain initially and I thought he was just a victim and hoped that Huey proves that he was a good guy. However, after knowing that he killed Strangelove and risked the life of Otacon, it disgusted me and wished someone kill Huey. Even when Venom spared Huey, he still had the balls to say that Snake should have been the one in that life raft. I am glad he died and made me like Otacon even more

    Much as I do want to say that Ocelot seemed kinda 'flat' compared to how he is before and after this, I also feel like this is a rare case of him not having to put on something of a front.
    He's being in a sense a 'strait man', even though when I recall how he's been, his calm nature isn't entirely unheard of. In Every other MG title he's been in, he's had moments of calmness, even under some extent of stress.
    I want to call it 'bad writing' but stab me in the back to say, I find it very very fascinating on the other hand. I find it very interesting to see a person whom typically is a hoot to watch with, be it his eagerness in a gunfight, or to torture people or really anything.
    Say what you want about the twin snakes, I got a good laugh over him both breaking the fourth wall ('...there are no continues my friend...Don't even think about using autofire, or I'll know!!") and his little accident with dropping his gun (or in both the original and Gamecube take on him loosing his hand), Ocelot is someone that in some vein I loved to hate given how he managed to get away with so much of what he did.
    It's odd and yet I'm ...
    I'm okay with how he was in 5. It's like he was there and trying to be the 'strait man' compared to everybody else. The one to be calm because lets face it, almost everybody else to an extent is even more off-their rocker for understandable reasons. Be it Venom snake for loosing his arm, shrapnel in his head and imbeded flesh inside him from another person. Or Kaz with a missing arm, foot, and potential eye damage.
    Then there's the MSF survivors whom are understandably not quite gotten past what happened in 1975, and so on.
    There has to be at least one 'sane' person even if Ocelot's own sanity is questionable as well. It's strange to see him so god-damn calm but I welcome it as well. It's like it's the ONE time we see him as... 'normal'.
    It's like in some twisted sense he's most 'comfortable' in this situation compared to everywhere else in which he's putting up to some extent a facade to some goal that's not clear right away, but in time it's revealed.
    I like it.
    That's my rambling opinion anyway.

      I don’t mind it, but it would’ve made for a more entertaining watch if Kojima added a flair of unpredictability to him. At first, I thought of Huey Emmerich as a father. Looking at Sons Of Liberty before I played The Phantom Pain story, I wondered why she was complaining of her father that almost drowned her. But now I understood. Huey is a murderous, lier, stealer of the lives in the Quarantine Facility, even bringing down the Venom Boss, who didn't realise he was talking to the Fake Venom Snake. If I was Big Boss, I would've shot him, but doing this would cause a time paradox, similar to Ocelot from MGS3: Snake Eater. Preventing the situation of almost drowning Emma is one of them. At least R&D can use Huey's work to their use.

    Huey thinking that the inspection being real is probably the only true thing about this. He's the kind of guy desperate to justify his own actions to others, and lie about the bad ones to prop himself up. He probably did want to make MSF seem justified in the eyes of the world and tried to take the initiative for that when he thought everyone else was being unreasonable about something that would help them.
    Every single one of his actions are driven by self-preservation and cowardice. Rather than go the long way around of sticking with his comrades, he hoped to prove them wrong in an action that turned out fatal for everyone, and he forgets others lost things too. He did lose a lot, but his cowardly nature meant he lost a lot less.

    These tapes are so uncomfortable they're awesome. I can totally see myself acting like Huey if I was in his position, caught guilty and trying to come up with excuses. Fantastic voice acting by all.

      +Tom3744 At the very least his mom had something of a moral ground (shown when she was torturing Big Boss) and genuinely loved him. But yeah she was pretty fucked up, just not to the extent of his father.

    • @jakandratchet9930
      @jakandratchet9930 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ricardo Quezada nowhere near the extent to his father. His mother may have some flaws in her right, but she genuinely loved him deeply and protected him from his appalling father, she hoped great things for Hal, and it helped influence the boss's wisdom. Hal truly possesses the boss's will, I'd say he does even more so than most if not "any" other character in the metal gear solid franchise

    Is Otacon aware of The Boss' meme? I don't recall he is, and I thought it's amazing that he became the inheritor to The Boss' will completely on account of his own decisions, without anyone else's input or pressure.

      +andrew gonzales because he called dr. clark a he
      If I knew a woman with the surname clark and then heard of a man named clark I wouldn't relate them, much less if that she was a field medic and the man was a genetics specialist
      and even mgs1 says it's a he, we don't really know if it's the actual paramedic or not
