My wife ( 30 yr US Army Veteran) really enjoy your stories. I am a huge Tolken and CS Lewis fan. We have started collecting pipes and joining your fellowship. Thank you for providing this communion.
Ah, such sweet memories of gatherings with my very closest friends 47 years ago, when I was eighteen years old, to enjoy a pipe, and a beer while discussing and debating Tolkien's work. And now we're all dispersed about the country so I smoke in solitude and think of those lovely times so long ago.
You are such a treasure! I wish more would find your words and poetry that draws men to beauty and reflection which one would hope to lead to the ultimate beauty... our savior. Thanks for sharing and God bless you brother.
Your words are very true. Beautiful well written words of prose and poetry do lead us to our Savior King, our Lord Jesus! This is why our hearts enjoy such writings, because they glow with His Song and Poetry! May all of us indeed gather at our Lord's table in Heaven when our stories here on earth are done! 🙏✝️✍️😊
Thank you, Malcolm, for this sweet glimpse into The Long-Expected Party, and our own awaiting The Long-Expected Party in Heaven. Blessings to you ever!
Happy Hobbit day Malcolm! I watched the recent Tolkien biographical film on the weekend, was fabulous to see the portrayal of love for language and story telling inspired in John by his mother. Also showed just how close we came, on many occasions, to having missed out on his gifts to the world.
I found your Channel a couple days ago, I'm currently trying to go through all your lovely videos/presentations in chronological order; I have to say this: I LOVE IT. I started by watching Lord Of The Rings related videos, but the whole atmosphere of this channel is so so ....ihavenowordsforit! I love it! Thank you. Greetings from germany.
Malcolm, we are celebrating Hobbit’s day, 2023, and as part of many things we are doing to celebrate are watching my favorite video you’ve done about today! Thank you for inspiring many of us today and sharing in your pure joy of Tolkien and his simply beautiful works.
love this (despite not being a pipe-smoker nor a consumer of a pint, barring a trip to pub while visiting your fair land - and even then, it's dry cider! ;D). What a joy! Blessings!
I have a similar Peterson's pipe. A swirling swampy green bowl but a shorter stem. A beauty of a pipe. I'm chuffing away, on the rooftop of a Baku hotel overlooking a huge defensive wall built centuries ago. Quite cool, in a way.
Good evening Malcolm, One could imagine the thrill and delight in sitting in 'The Bird and Baby' smoking and drinking with Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Sadly, a pipe and a pint are no more in a British hostelry, more the pity for that. God bless.
I have ordered my pipe, I have already started following you reading parts of lord of the rings. I am even looking into authors such as tolkien lewis and such . You, my friend, have woken a long , I thought lost passion for books and good poems have ordered tolkiens biography by humphrey Carter and I'm thinking about trying to do tolkiens course in Oxford loft ideals but why not
How eloquently put! I'm happy to have stumbled across this excellent video on this "Hobbit Day". Many happy returns to you. I'm looking forward to watching some of your other videos now!
Malcolm, I am very much enjoying these videos. My home is a little like your library, happy chaos! I wanted to say, I have come across the custom of giving presents on your birthday. I once stayed with a group for four months in Wat Tung Sathit Buddhist monastery in Bangkok, in the 70's. We were guests, and not actually part of their routine. During our stay, the abbot, a jolly monk, had his birthday, and threw a party. We had a banquet, Thai girl folk dancers, and he gave to all of us a small present, apparently a Thai custom. I still have mine - a little Buddha badge. It was a very lovely thing.
I love the picture of you blowing a ring of smoke, A memory as you from your pipe took one big toke. May you have many pleasent days, Smoking your pipe and watching the branches sway.
Thank You for another insightful video! I too love “pipe weed”, Peterson Pipes, Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, and all things Inklings. Cheers from the USA, Josh
I received the LOTR illustrated hardcopy (that you are reading here) for Christmas this year and began another journey through this wonderful tale. It is also the first time I have read it since I accepted Christ into my life. I don't know how much of the change is due to my spiritual birth or growing in age and wisdom, but the story and the details have grown so much deeper in this reading. I feel as if I am seeing more of Tolkien's life and faith within the pages than before. I, too, started pipe smoking because of my deep interest in Middle Earth. Especially of late, I have come to appreciate the meditative process of sitting with a pipe and letting the haste and worry of the world slip away. I find this same effect when I sit here with you reading and speaking in your study, so I wish to thank you for that. Hope the first week of the new year has treated you kindly. God bless.
To relay the same sentiments as others have, thank you for sharing this and for being you. I would truly love to sit down with you and share a pipe and a pint and a conversation with you on Tolkien. Cheers from Tennessee.
Marvellous. Thank you. Old Peculiar is not sold locally so when you were enjoying yours, I was rather envious. Before lockdown was reimposed we visited another country (England) and I spotted a bottle. Thank you for that too!
The Christian imagery is well known in Tolkien, but your drawing a line to the parable of the master's feast, and the long expected party is one I had not seen before. I think almost no one can be created more than Tolkien for the continued observance of the art of pipe smoking. Thank you for such a lovely time!
A heart-warming and spirit-lifting moment in the current gloom. Thank you. It does strike me that pipe smoking is very much a pleasure of the male domain. I can light a pipe and keep it going - a skill learned while my pipe smoking husband was the driver on long drives to Yorkshire up the A1 - but it doesn't really work for a woman. What might be the female equivalent to bring the same benefits of reflection and peace.
my great great grandmother used to light a pipe for her husband and got to like it so much that she took it up herself and they sat wontedly on wither side of the kitchen fireplace smoking together!
I love your videos so much, i like how you wear a waistcoat like tolkien did and of course you smoke A pipe. The sad thing is, when I get to live like that, it will be 2067, people like you and tolkien might not be around anymore.
For a few years I actually gave people presents for my birthday. I would explain why I was doing it, and how I thought the world would be better if we all did this. I got some odd looks, but everyone smiled and thanked me. By the way, I too began smoking a pipe entirely because of reading The Lord of the Rings. I stopped long ago, but I did enjoy it.
Dear Brother you're a Amazing man. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. Your such a fine man of God. New subscriber and I love your Channel. Nothing like a good pipe , we long for peace and harmony. Pipe weed is so good, many many blends to choose from . Learning about the lord of the Rings will start reading The 1st book. Could you imagine a conversation with Tolkien and C.S Lewis !! That would have been something!. You have such passion and your a treasure my friend. You love Peterson Pipes like me , I do also and I have a story to share with you. It is better to give than receive and I just had a birthday on the 18th of June and to celebrate it. I bought a Peterson Pipe a bent apple it was maybe 3 days old . I was at the local smoke shop and there was a man there who was new to pipe smoking. He kept admiring my pipe and saying how beautiful it was ,and I was like thank you very much. Well I could see how he looked at it . I knew he really liked it. Well I thought I have a few pipes and i remember when I first started to smoke a pipe how excited I was . It brought back happy memories of long ago . I took the pipe gave it to the man and he looked at it and said wow how pretty it is . I don't have a nice one like this and I said well my friend now you do !! He said what : what do you mean Sir , I said its yours now enjoy, you deserve it . He was a stranger and a fellow pipe smoker and he was speechless. I said enjoy and I hope it gives you many happy years. I am not rich and lost a lot over the years . I felt so happy and good that I made someone smile . It was so good and I wanted him to enjoy that pipe. It was like $160.00 but to me Priceless because he smiled. It is better to give than to receive. He had a tear in his eye and I was just happy for him . Acts of kindness are free. Jesus our lord gave all for us and he gives us his love free. He paid the price with his sacrifice with his life and we should strive to be more like him . He is the alpha and the Omega . I again wanted to thank you with all my heart for your incredible channel and you being you. You make our world a better place. I love your material it's so good and I learn so much . I again don't have money and I am starting over from a divorce. But I love to help others and money is temporary but friendships are rare. I look forward to more of your videos there astonishing and your a true gentleman. God bless you my friend. Scott from Tennessee
Mmm yes the amount of pleasure we get from a pint (or three!) and a pipe! It always seems greater than it should be, somehow it gives us space and time to contemplate, think that’s where the added pleasure comes from. I was wondering what particular pipe weed you were enjoying btw? I smoked Three Nuns back in my younger days and since returning to the pipe in recent years I’ve been on a quest to find a worthy replacement, nothing so far quite does it but I’ll enjoy continuing my search! Anyway thanks for your videos it’s so special to spend time in your company and share for a while your spiritual and academic world. It’s a shame that many lives (including my own) are not normally given the opportunity to discover and enjoy such joys so thanks for giving us your time and sharing 🙏
Thank you, Malcolm Guite! I enjoy your videos and talks so much. In fact I would love to hear your thoughts on Susanna Clarke’s new novel Piranesi. I feel sure that you will love it - what with all of its Inklings echoes, and even an albatross! Best wishes from Denmark
Thanks. susanna Clarke is a friend and I'm just reading Piranesi right now. I saw parts of it in manuscript and I think I may have had something to do with the albatross!
I prefer a glass of sweet sherry. What! Yes, I am a big girls blouse! I have never smoked, except passively. But I wonder if it's possible to have a pipe that you can puff, but you don't actually inhale at all? Just for show , as it were.
Dr. Guite, I have enjoyed your poetry and your blog now for a while and just recently came upon this channel; what a delight! I have smoked a pipe now for several years now and am thinking about getting a churchwarden, perhaps a Peterson. Do you have a suggestion for someone relatively new to the world of smoking and completely new to lovely churchwardens?

Me too Brother, happy memories indeed 😊 keep enjoying what makes you happy 😊
Im going to read Tolkien tonight and enjoy a pint and think of you
Starting the book today , it's been to long without wizards and elves, I need a break from this world 😊
You are never too old to listen to someone telling a story, wonderful , keep up the good work Malcolm . 👏
What a beautiful custom of the Hobbits to give gifts instead of receiving on their bday.
You are such a treasure! I wish more would find your words and poetry that draws men to beauty and reflection which one would hope to lead to the ultimate beauty... our savior. Thanks for sharing and God bless you brother.

I made a very small contribution to that film, helping the choir in Abbey Road Studio with their Anglo-Saxon pronunciation!
As someone who's birthday shares Bilbo and Frodo's, I share your joy Malcolm as I do theirs.

Glad you enjoyed it
I have to say, I want to be like you when I grow old and wise, smoking a pipe surrounded by books. A warm hug for you Mister, from Argentina.
It’s late January and some years later but still a great little film, thank you again!
Everytime I watch your videos I feel like a pupil listening to his mentor.
I have a similar Peterson's pipe. A swirling swampy green bowl but a shorter stem. A beauty of a pipe. I'm chuffing away, on the rooftop of a Baku hotel overlooking a huge defensive wall built centuries ago. Quite cool, in a way.
amazing to think my channel is watched in Baku!
Definitely calls for a mug of fine Beer and a bowl of best Hobbit Weed in the Churchwarden.
I owe my pipe smoking in part to Tolkien also.
that's interesting. i wonder how many of us there are who took up pipes because of tolkien!
😇
Good evening Malcolm,
One could imagine the thrill and delight in sitting in 'The Bird and Baby' smoking and drinking with Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.
Sadly, a pipe and a pint are no more in a British hostelry, more the pity for that.
God bless.
yes its a pity. I was fortunate to smoke a pipe or two there in the days when it was still allowed!
Visiting your study is like visiting Bag End! All you need is a round window!
I have ordered my pipe, I have already started following you reading parts of lord of the rings.

Absolutely!
