What a treat! There seem to be fewer and fewer pockets of this appreciation for the old and wondrous words, and I think your readings and this channel are a hidden dragon's gem!
Tolkein was instrumental in Lewis' acceptance of Christ. Their friendship is an outstanding example of how to outreach in a manner that changes lives instead of just annoying people. Lewis of course did not become Catholic like Tolkein but this was never an issue between them. I do not recall the exact wording but Tolkien had to say on the matter of Lewis choosing a different flavor of Christianity something to the effect of, "I am first and foremost a follower of Jesus Christ, and after that I am a Catholic".
The prices I would pay to have this man as a grandfather are staggering. Cheers Malcolm. Always so good to end my night with a telling of a story by you.
Thank you for this channel! My wife and I converted to Catholicism a little over a year ago, and while we were doing it I picked back up my love for reading, and picked up a love of pipe smoking. My daughter falls to pieces at night if I have to work late and my wife has to read Narnia instead. I’ve also started my masters in Literature, and I’m writing my first paper on C.S. Lewis. Your channel has been a breath of fresh air in both a spiritual and literary manner.
i sit for hours on a tractor during harvest and autumn and spring planting. Now have found anougher excellent go to education. thank you from new zealand.
One of my favourite books from childhood! Gradually gets more and more magical as they sail on towards the end of the world. I remember the enchantment of the shallow sea and flat grass land when they get there
My dad read the Chronicles of Narnia to me as a kid as well. And Hans Christian Andersen. It's how I came to love reading. I used to ride my bike to the library and take out as many books as I could bring back. I love listening to your videos reading books. It's so relaxing and cozy. Thank you.
I am so glad to find your channel. I've been reading your poetry as well. I discovered Lewis when I was 11. He was my guide to Jesus and Christianity. I remember running to tell my mother about Aslan being Jesus. I read MacDonald's fairy tales and children's books at the same time. I have hard back copies of the Chronicles with Baynes' drawings. Thank you for your poetry. I've introduced my daughter to it and she loves it.
My pipe comes tomorrow. I have been researching for my book and picked up Copperplate calligraphy to better understand clerical work. I am putting the kettle on for tea right now. Thank you for sharing your lovely contemplating space and sharing your stories. I hope to make people smile with delight like you do. God Bless
What a wonderful treat! I've never read the whole Narnia stories. I got to remedy that. Such an evocative work! It is clearly meant to be read out loud. Thank you very much for sharing this!
If you ever read Arthur Machen's story "The Great Return," tell us if you liked it. Machen is best known for a few horror stories written early in his career, but "The Great Return" is a wonder-tale in what was then the present day. It's one of my favorite stories. I also love Machen's late story "N." Machen was not personally acquainted with any of the Inklings so far as I know, though Dorothy L. Sayers had a little contact with him, I believe, when she was anthologizing mystery and horror stories. "N" introduces us to the Victorian pastor the Rev. Mr. Hampole -- I think "Hampole" comes from Richard Rolle of Hampole, the late medieval mystic. The quotations from Mr. Hampole's book in this story and in Machen's late novel The Green Round are enticing.
The timing on this is amazing. I literally just finished another read through of the Narnia series! It was a wonderful thing to return to, I literally felt like stress and anxieties all fell during the week I was reading, a really nice antidote to social media and all the other craziness of the world.
I read Voyage back in the nineties. It was one of the first books that really grabbed me. It showed me reading could be fun, and even enjoyable, lol. I've read so many books since then, but this book gets all of the credit. I wouldn't have read them if I had never read Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Not only was it in itself a great story, but it made me excited to read other stories. Thank you C.S. Lewis.
having discovered your channel recently thanks to the gift of the algorithms, and having enjoyed your back catalogue greatly, to see a new video from you in my updates fills me up with happiness, Malcolm.
I love your Pauline Bates illustrated hardback. Thank-you for reading from it. I found that scene with Eustace Scrubb and the dragon electrifying as a child, and I think it’s magnificent.
I had a papa, who i called Dad, he was the most wonderful darling. It's been 20 years now. Grandparents are so special. They taught me to respect and value our good human beings .This granddaughter of his misses him every day. Storytellers of the world are true treasures. Take nothing and no one for granted.
Thank you sir! I now believe I must revisit Narnia when I finish the Duncton series I am currently reading! What a pleasure to hear you read as I enjoy a pipe!
It is so wonderful, Malcolm, to hear in your voice and see your excitement build as you read us this story. Poor Eustace certainly had himself a fright! Cheers.
The eagle and child yes! Spent many hours enjoying a guiness in there. Tolkien and CS Lewis would meet up and enjoy pints together there. If you look closely at the pub sign it’s an eagle carrying a baby. This is where Tolkien got the inspiration for the eagles carrying the hobbits from mount doom
Hi Malcolm! Thanks for the tip about Carpenter's book. I was delighted to discover I can enjoy that title for free as an Audible member. I hope this applies to UK members as well. Blessings to you and yours.
I’m so glad I found this channel it’s truly fantastic. I have never been a fan of reading, admittedly it’s because I struggle to concentrate but you make me want to keep trying. Thank you!!
Another lovely reading - I don’t think I ever got as far as The Dawn Treader in the series as a kid. I do remember the first time a teacher introduced us to the Narnia books - sitting there in stunned silence and enchantment in the classroom. Listening today, i wonder how much of Lewis himself was in those characters - that part about wanting to be more connected with other humans and all that. Absolutely marvellous.
I loved reading The Chronicles of Narnia as a child, and enjoyed re-reading them to my boys when they were younger. Beautifully read. Your study is so atmospheric; I can almost smell the pipe smoke 😊
As a child it always amused me that Reepicheep called Eustace, "Useless". His metamorphosis to a true "friend" was a great lesson of the story. The meer is coloring up nicely. I enjoyed H. Carpenter"s biography on JRR Tolkien, I will definitely look for his book on the Inklings.
Thank you so much, it’s very relaxing and heartwarming listening to you read to use..it takes me back to my childhood… what wonderful times as a child I had..!!
I wish you would slowly work your way through a whole book. Like a chapter per video. That would be so fun. I love youtube videos where people read. Especially books like the chronicles of narnia and stuff by tolkien. Especially with the whole atmosphere that these videos provide. They are the perfect vehicles for reading such books.
Greetings from Appalachia. Your videos are always such a gift. I wish I had a dragon's claw pipe to enjoy it with. Maybe there's some dragon's gold somewhere in one of these valleys I could buy one with. Let the search begin!
Thank you for reigniting my imagination with your wonderful way of reading and commenting. My kids just asked me the other night if I would read them the Narnia series once again. I was very happy to oblige. And now to hear you read with such passion is a blessing for the child in me. Slainte!
From someone who really has enjoyed this channel the last few weeks... if Malcolm got some better lighting, I think the channel would skyrocket. Even if Malcolm needs a certain light-level to read by, you can always get some directional lighting that may be even better than what he's used to reading by.
In my X altherithming I’ve come across you my Sr. Don’t smoke pipe, don’t read books but smoke cigarettes. I read books on apps, but not your typical books. I’m intrigued and will follow. Love this.
Honestly you really don't , from an older Man that wishes he was younger , but acts younger until my body keeps reminding me to act my age 😂 enjoy your life whatever your age .😊
Thank you, I always enjoy your videos and find them to be such a treat. Please keep them coming. I also enjoy reading my copy of The Singing Bowl, especially the poem Out in the Elements, Grantchester. Ron
Greetings Malkom. Thank's for the story. What fun it is to remember. I have one for you. My name is Ken newly retired. Living just outside Cambridge. We'll l have been enjoying a pipe cince about the year 16, saying 2000 in front seems an awful fuss don't you think. Any case in watching your fun vidioes posts or whatever there called, l heard you tell about Petersons pipes of Ireland. So l researched a bit about him. He was a Latvian emigry married to an Irish lady. A bit of a freedom thinker by all accounts. Well what do you know l'm maried to a Latvian lady and just about to go to Latvia! So l went on line and brought a couple of his pipes, just old ones l needed to restore. One, an old one possibly from his time, with a lovely silver wind cover and a delicate retaining chain. They really smoke lovely just as you said. Especially with my home grown one tobbaco, real leaf of the shire. Thank you for enviting me into your study. I hope you enjoid my story. All the best Ken.
Thanks, yes Peterson was a Latvian a great craftsman and an entrepreneur who also did a lot of good for the society around him! Interesting that you are able to grow your own tobacco in cambridgeshire!
Its not difficult, well about the same as tomatoes. They have beutiful flowers. It's the drying and curing thats the key. And then celering, like a good whisky that makes it realy smooth.
Malcolm, I really enjoy these videos. Your dragon's claw meerschaum is beautiful. One of my favorite pipes is a meerschaum unicorn. One of its ears has chipped off. Have you ever read Frank Peretti's The Oath? It's a wonderful piece of Christian fiction - my favorite novel, in fact - that features a dragon. May the LORD bless you and keep you!
What a treat! There seem to be fewer and fewer pockets of this appreciation for the old and wondrous words, and I think your readings and this channel are a hidden dragon's gem!
My wife and I are re-reading the Narnia books together out loud in the evenings - in our 50"s ; "we are old enough for fairy tales again!"
Excellent. I read all seven books to my wife at her request!
"But some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again". C S Lewis . Love your channel. Best regards Ron
Just finishing book 7 of Harry Potter! I'm 45
@@Chron_Dawg78 Oh, you've outdone me. I was 20.
Oh Im there. So happy to have returned
I could listen to this being read by Malcolm from beginning to end . Absolutely fabulous.
One never tires of Lewis - nor of Malcolm's readings. Both are treats.

Wonderful t o think of this finding its way to a tractor in New Zealand!
I love the meeting of Eustace and Aslan it reads so true, it is what Christ does to us repeatedly!
I'm going to read that part next!
Interesting how one can stumble upon a dragon when we wander into places we shouldn’t be. Great video, sir. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Malcolm from Italy! I'm reading your collection of poetry for Lent and it's very inspiring. Davide

Love listening to you Malcolm unfortunately it is rare people get to listen to someone as eloquent as yourself these days
These episodes are as welcome as having a pint 🍺 and smoke 💨 with a friend at "The Green Dragon" 🐲 would be!!
having discovered your channel recently thanks to the gift of the algorithms, and having enjoyed your back catalogue greatly, to see a new video from you in my updates fills me up with happiness, Malcolm.
Welcome aboard!
You are a treasure I would never have known. Many thanks to U Tube!
If we could could a several hour compilation video of Malcolm reading and smoking to fall asleep to, I could die pleased.
I feel like this is going to Arthur Machen and Imma end up in the moors being unmoored from my being by a satyr.
I love your Pauline Bates illustrated hardback. Thank-you for reading from it. I found that scene with Eustace Scrubb and the dragon electrifying as a child, and I think it’s magnificent.
In my perfect Universe, this man would be a very close neighbor... just enough distance to keep his - and my - novel identity.
I have absolutely no idea how i ended up here! But im glad i clicked. Incredibly easy to listen to. Intelligent and engrossing. 😊
Welcome!
Lewis is so efficient with his words, yet so beautifully poetic.

Made the trip makes it even better
Great way to start my Monday morning! If you haven't considered it before you should now, Audio Readings of Lewis and Tolkien. Be Blessed!

Outstanding!
As an Oxford resident- the Eagle and Child was a firm favourite watering hole prior to it’s unfortunate closure

Spent many a happy hour in the Eagle & Child about 30 years ago. Also occasionally frequented by the cast and crew of Morse.
Thank you for sharing. Please continue sharing what you enjoy reading.

Beautifully read. I always felt sorry for the dragon as a child.
God bless you for being an oasis in this modern world
Great video! Something i never knew until i was older is that the Chronicles of Narnia were a Christian story underneath the surface.
Thank you, beautiful, I must get my old childhoodbooks from the attic and replace them downstairs
Nice vest very reminiscent of Bilbo from Jackson's film, in place of the ring you have a lighter.
