- Dallas and Pittsburgh meet in the big game for the third time, renewing a classic rivalry from the 70s, as Troy Aikman's Cowboys look to make it three titles in four years and cement their status as a dynasty, against Neil O'Donnell and the Steelers.
This is the last superbowl my grandpa ever saw. He passed in December of 96. Was a huge Cowboys fan and saw their last.
So far.. their last!

I remember watching this game as an 8 year old with my dad. I wasn't that into the game at the time, but I remember when the cowboys won it, my dad was so excited he forgot that it was a school night and I got to stay up till like midnight lol.
The Steelers dominated,and should have won the game.hands down.

I was 12 watching this with my dad this was the first year the first year that i really started to watch football n at this time i was a cowboys fan before the ravens came to Baltimore
I'm 23 years old. Been a cowboys fan since birth. Never had the opportunity to ever see them win it. Hopefully that changes one day

Please. The only reason Dallas won this game is because Neil O’Donnell couldn’t tell the difference between his own receivers and the Dallas defensive backs.
This was by far the weakest of the Dallas Super Bowl teams.
This was the first Super Bowl that I watched back in 1996, and I've watched every Super Bowl since this one.
This was a really good game played by two excellent teams and it's went down to the fourth quarter and a mistake or a very good defensive play by Dallas that put the Steelers away and ended the Steelers hopes of beating the Cowboys , but I don't think any team could've beaten the Cowboys that Sunday .
Troy Aikman would later say that they weren't as good as they were in 1994, 1993, or 1992.
Even if that was the case, they were good enough overall to win the Super Bowl.

This cemented my "strong dislike" for the Cowgirls. First SB loss for the Stillers. I actually teary-eyed up. Felt bad for Cowher. But he finally won one in '05. I would like to see another Steelers v Cowgirls Super Bowl matchup before I pass (pun intended) away.

I was fortunate to get to watch all 3 SB wins out of 4 years of the awesome Cowboys dynasty. That’s what I will always be thankful for, they always got it done in the SB, never had to see them lose one! This SB win they did get some breaks but going off several highlights that I’ve seen over the years, they had some bad breaks in one of their losses to the Steelers in the 70s, TE dropping a wide open TD catch where the ball hits him in the chest, that would’ve made the difference in them winning the game.

The thing is many Cowboys fans don't know about the dropped TD catch. I use things like that to show people it is not all on the QB. Players around them have to make plays.
Even Aikman in one Super Bowl was like 0 TDS and 1 int, but they boasted about his 70% completion percentage.
That doesn't happen in today's game.
In the opening pass play, he throws behind Novacek and doesn't get crushed by the announcers that he has to throw a better pass.
Instead, they tell you WHY he threw that pass behind him because it would have been intercepted.
Many fans just don't know everything that goes into a play a decision on passing, running, coverage etc...
I was fortunate to see them all. The heartbreak though was that Lynn Swan acrobatic catch. You can't cover a receiver any better on that play and he managed to come down with that pass.
But back then we had a solid defense as well as a solid team overall.
Playing football we use to pretend to be those players. If I was all time QB I was Staubach. Receiver I was Pearson, Richards, Hill or Billy Jo DuPree.
Defense was Randy, Too Tall, etc... you take your pick. 😆

Every coach since Johnson, with the exception of Bill Parcells, have been nothing but "yes men," and let Jerry Jones call all of the personnel shots in the GM role. And Jerry is SO good at that role, that they have won zero SB's and managed only to win one or two playoff games in the entire 21st Century.

I’m a Cowboy’s fan. Always have been. The first Super Bowl I remember seeing was 1975 that was won by the Steelers. I was a kid but that’s how long I’ve been watching football. I’ve seen a lot in that time and the truth is, I have nothing but respect for the Steelers Franchise, their fans and their city. They are a classy organization with some amazing players in their history. After this Dallas team ended, I watched Pittsburgh build their own powerhouse org in the post Bradshaw dynasty with Big Ben. I almost couldn’t help but be happy for Steelers fans because I respect them all so much and because I had been able to enjoy this Dallas team so much in the post Staubach era. The old Landry Cowboys were the team of my youth, but this (and the earlier 93, 94 Cowboys) were the team of my adulthood and I consider them to be among one of our very best teams. Our respective teams have had two dynasties, and that makes us pretty unique. Plus our ability to meet in the Super Bowl against each other makes us sort of “linked” together throughout history because of our great competitions against each other. For this Super Bowl, it was just a matter of a good football team not quite matching up with a great football team. Pittsburgh was plenty game and they played as well as they could (minus the obvious 2 or 3 big mistakes) but realistically, they played a top level Super Bowl game against a phenomenal collection of talent and they nearly pulled it off. I agree with you that these two teams have written a lot of history together….
Hated the Steelers in the 70's when we had great teams and should have swept them. They were lucky because the Raiders should have been playing if not for that Franco Harris miracle crap

The Cowboys faced a lot of adversity during the 1995 season and struggled at times, but they were able to put it all together at the right time and claim their 5th Super Bowl title.

Jerry Jones paid both Art Rooney and Bill Cowher money to have Neil O'Donnell intellinnaly throw both interceptions to the same guy in the same area with no receivers in the area.

This is a completion to Corey Holiday who replaced Ernie Mills who was knocked out of the game by Larry Brown earlier in the 4th quarter. Compare this play to the 2nd interception by Larry Brown (at 1:49:08). It is the exact same play call by Pittsburgh. Corey Holiday (the replacement) RAN THE WRONG ROUTE on the interception play but got it right on the next series (at 1:55:09). There was no fix and nobody paying off O'Donnell. - PS you are DUMB

Nah, the only things O'Donnell threw were 2 horrible interceptions. On both plays the Cowboys blitzed, the receiver didn't change his route and O'Donnell panicked. Cowboys defense won the game.
Im not a Cowboy fan by any stretch since I am a 49er fan, but this is a very underrated Super Bowl. Great teams are not always great. They are great when they have to be. Dallas made the plays when they had to.

In the spirit of educating the uninformed, over half (e.g., 27 players) of the 1995 Cowboys roster never played a down for Jimmy Johnson. This included 2 players (e.g., Deion Sanders and Larry Allen) that were the best to ever play their positions. This 3rd Lombardi Trophy in 4 years was a classic case of links in a chain. The Landry Era supplied Johnson with Michael Irvin, Mark Tuinei, Nate Newton, Jim Jeffcoat, Ken Norton, and Bill Bates. Johnson drafted the core of this juggernaut, and Jerry Jones then added Sanders, Allen, Ray Donaldson, Derek Kennard, Scott Case, and Chris Boniol to the mix. What is remarkable about the 1992-1995 Cowboys is that despite changing personnel and 2 head coaches, they were able to field the most DOMINANT dynasty of the Super Bowl Era. In that 4 year period, the Cowboys were 10-1 in the post-season, they won all 10 games by double-digits, and they scored 27 or more points in all 11 playoff contests.

70s Steelers, 80s 49ers, and the 2000s Patriots have more titles and lasted longer. 70s Steelers have more hall of famers as well.

Heartbreaking loss as a Steelers fan. All the 'what ifs' after this one. Looking back though, Steelers could have won, but Dallas had a HOF quarterback and we had a good quarterback . Dallas deserved this win. Haley coming back to play the game was a huge factor I think. He was a force.

What happened on that last interception is the receiver was supposed to cut inside as the hot read when the blitz was coming. He didn't read the blitz and ran his regular route. Since these throws are timing routes, there was nothing for O'Donnell to do but throw the ball where the receiver should have been. Brown anticipated the hot read so he was there waiting on the pass when it came.
Twice…. To the db so terrible he was cut the next year. Momentum totally shifted and O’Donnell had to do something if he was to be paid.

Yes, it has changed a lot and not necessarily for the better. The physicality is gone from the game now as a person who started watching football in the 1990s that is hard for me to accept.
@@wheelchairmanjon it can be frustrating, but its also depressing to see some of the greats lose their mental facilities like boxers. Its a fine line to walk tbh. My biggest gripe is that the QB gets so much more protection than other players, but I do think some of the rules for safety are warranted.
Larry Allen was always my favorite lineman.

I S tarted Videotaping Cowboy Games in 1984, this was the Third Cowboys Super Bowl I Videotaped I always wanted to get a Cowboys-Steelers Super Bowl, I wasn't disappointed.

I had to sit close to the tv to hear the commentators and to hear the action .. never again did I go anywhere to watch a big game that I was invested in .. always watch it at home

The Dallas Cowboys: America's Biggest Disappointment since after Super Bowl 30. September 1996 - Current.
The Cowboys could have easily gone up 21-7 in the first half, but had to settle for two field goals early.
Steelers put up one hell of a fight and caught the Cowboys having a down day, but Dallas was head and shoulders the superior team. Between 1991 and ‘97 they played each other four times and the Cowboys won each time, including Super Bowl XXX, in each contest the Steelers lost by double digits.
Steelers really struggle against the Cowboys, even after the 90s.

This was the first super bowl I ever watched.
I was 7 years old and watched it on a 32 inch RCA television at a apartment in Cleburne Texas.

I was at this game with the Dallas Cowboy travel Club !! At the time I was a Cowboy fan for 26 years and this was the ultimate Experience of a lifetime. I have been to at least 30 cowboy games in my life and they have never lost a game that I attended in person...30-0 !!!

As a (very young) Steelers fan at the time, this was the first time I ever saw "my team" in the big game. So to see them rally in the 2nd half, come back from behind, and BLOW IT ALL on an errant pass and just a pathetic drive at the very end...well, it was heartbreaking. I think they were just OUT OF GAS at that point, they had been bested by the Cowboys defense. And who can deny that the Triplets were a force of nature. Aikman, Irvin and Emmitt Smith were a dangerous combination.
But you cant help but wonder, if Hastings catches that pass (that hits him right in the hands) at 1:48:30, its potentially first down and a new drive to at least tie the game with a field goal, (Norm Johnson was money back then, as solid a kicker as we would see until Jeff Reed)... but more importantly, it PREVENTS the damn SECOND interception Nerd O'Donnell gently tosses to Larry Brown on the very next play. 😣😣 ((Oh but he wasn't done, his hail Mary toss at the end was intercepted too)) This was a case of a pretty good team meets a freakin great team and the great team won. Thankfully, I would grow into my 20s to see the Steelers become dominant and have their own "dynasty" just 10 years later, 3 SB appearances and 2 wins with an actual good QB from 2005-2011. And I think with the way this year is shaping up, everyone in Pittsburgh misses the "Big Ben years" by now.
I'm a dallas fan and I don't blame either interception on O'Donnell. Both times dallas blitzed the receiver never changed his route. That should of been a CURL or a slant pattern
The second one could be blamed on the receiver, but the fault still lies on O'Donnell for throwing the ball before seeing the receiver adjust his route
Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer were all at the University of Arkansas in the early 60's. The first two as players and Switzer as a running backs coach. Its no surprise Jerry picked who he did at different times, and its no surprise there was friction, they were teammates in college, peers.

The numbers clearly demonstrate that from 1992-1995, the Dallas Cowboys were the most dominant dynasty in NFL history. The Cowboys were 49-15 in the regular season, 10-1 in the post-season, they appeared in 4 consecutive NFC Championship Games, and they were the first team to win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years. In 11 playoff games, they never scored less than 27 points, and all of their 10 playoff victories were by double digits. In their 3 Super Bowl wins, the Cowboys outscored their opponents by 62 points. To put those numbers in perspective, the 2001-2004 Patriots didn't even make the playoffs in 2002, and they won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years by a COMBINED 9 points.

I still cry at this. Cower's on side kick call was legendary. But Neil "where is Larry Brown" O'Donnell blew it.
they just put to much on O'Donnell they should have kept trying to run it at that stage in the game dallas defense was getting tired.
The first pick was O'Donnell's fault, but in the second and most critical pick Andre Hastings ran the wrong way on his route. O'Donnell was very shaky in this game though.
Weird Super Bowl for me: I loved these Cowboys (not a bandwagon fan though: they were young, I was young in football, I thought it was a team of players I thought I could grow up with. The results were mostly satisfying) but after the first three drives, they just hung on for dear life. At the time, it didn't feel like a win, but an escape. Since the Cowboys haven't won since, I feel better about this game now then I did then (I look at it as the Cowboys doing just enough, especially early, to pull out the win).
It still pisses me off to think about the Cowher era IF we actually had a good QB before Ben. Cowher still won more games from 1992-2007 than any other active coach, even with O'Donnell, Kordell, Tomczak. With a truly good QB in that era, Pittsburgh would have 8 titles instead of 6 I think.
@@caomhan84 Yeah, I give Cowher a pass when it comes to the playoffs mostly due to the fact that the majority of his teams (with the exception of 1998 & 2003) played above expectations; but in the big spots, when the Steelers needed a QB to make it happen for them, things usually went the other way (with the exception of Neil O'Donnell in the 1995 AFC Championship game and Tommy Maddox's comeback against the Browns in the 2002 Wild Card Game).

My wife went into labor early that morning and gave birth to my beautiful daughter about 3hrs before kickoff. Knowing how big a Cowboys fan I am she told me to go and watch the Super Bowl. I went home and watched the game, Cowboys won and as soon as the game was over I went back to the hospital for the night. It was a PERFECT day. Had a sweet little baby girl and win the Super Bowl. Finally got some revenge on Pittsburgh for Super Bowls 10 & 13.

My 1st Superbowl after watching the 1995 AFC Championship Game between Colts vs. Steelers. I started learning and following football. Worked 2nd one at Superbowl XLII. Was Crippled and Recovering from coma around Superbowl XLIX and will be working at Superbowl LVII next month.
O’Donnell was all over the place the entire game, it’s a miracle the Steelers were that close at the end of the game.

This is a completion to Corey Holiday who replaced Ernie Mills who was knocked out of the game by Larry Brown earlier in the 4th quarter. Compare this play to the 2nd interception by Larry Brown (at 1:49:08). It is the exact same play call by Pittsburgh. Corey Holiday (the replacement) RAN THE WRONG ROUTE on the interception play but got it right on the next series (at 1:55:09). There was no fix and nobody paying off O'Donnell.

Oh please...He certainly wasn't great, but he sure as hell was solid in '95. Football Outsiders gives him a DYAR and DVOA both within the top 15 in the entire NFL that year. He was a HUGE reason the Steelers even made it to the Super Bowl. I was PAINED as much as ANY Steeler fan on the planet with this game, but people need to keep things in friggin' perspective. I agree: it used to be that the title drought from 1978-1991 was a long time, yet today that might that looks like a short shave compared to what's ongoing. If you ever find the 1993 Super Bowl 28 (the second SB between the Boys & the Bills), I would be greatly grateful. I know it's an awful game but still it's missing from all the SBs I downloaded beside SB 16 (I have some parts from that) & 2 (which, from what I understood, is nowhere to be found). The copies I found from SB 5 are partial (for some reason, the video is out for a long while), which is sad cause It was a great game.

Johnson was a great coach, but so was Switzer - something many tend to overlook. In the brief time Switzer was the Cowboy's head man, he won 5 playoff games and one Super Bowl (with just a slight break he could've won two). Since he got fired? Dallas has won zero Super Bowls and a grand total of THREE playoff games - in 22 years! I've heard Dallas Cowboy people say they wish they could have either Johnson OR Switzer back. Both were miles ahead of anything they've had since. Johnson was the best, but Switzer wasn't far behind him.

Steelers fan here. I still have the whole game on VHS. Pittsburgh had their chances but three bad breaks led to their undoing (obviously two in the second half) but sometimes that's how it goes. For 12 years this was the highest watched Super Bowl of all time. Glad it came against a respected rival going back to Super Bowls X and XIII. Go Steelers always!

The most hilarious thing from this Super Bowl is that Larry Brown got MVP just because O Donnell threw 2 passes right to him with no receiver in the vicinity.
This was sweet revenge for the Cowboys franchise. Losing two heartbreaking Super Bowls to Pittsburgh by a total of 8 points...each game was one that Dallas could have won if only a break or two had gone their way. In this game, the Steeler defense outplayed Dallas’ offense in the second half but it was Dallas that was on the receiving end of the breaks thanks to Pittsburgh QB O’Donnell.
I remember watching this game, I was 16 and my father got mad/aggravated when Neil oddonell threw the interception in the fourth quarter when the Steelers was driving to either tie the game at 20-20 or take the lead 23-20!! The Steelers end up loosing this super bowl 27-17 in January or February of 1996 when this game was played

I loved in how America's game that Moose said that his position coach said that the talent they had overcame the coaching. Imagine if they had a good coach in Jimmy. If both of the men in Jerry and Jimmy set aside their egos. I know for one thing the Cowboys would not have had 3 turnovers in the 94 NFC championship game in 3 straight possessions and been down 21-0 if Jimmy were coaching that game against the 49ers. In the end, the Cowboys were in huge trouble going into the 1996 season. Jay Novacek retired after the Super Bowl. Michael Irvin got busted for cocaine possession and missed the first 3 games of the season. Charles Haley hurt his back and he "retired" early on in the 96 season. The offense just ran out of steam in the 96 season. It was Green Bay's turn and for those two seasons they were the best in the NFC with Brett Favre just on fire.
