    Man, that tip about the placement of melody notes in crosspicking rolls was my "mind blown" moment of the year. Seems so obvious and logical now that you've spelled it out for me. I'm gonna have to revisit every bit of crosspicking I've ever arranged now :D

      This approach to placing melody notes is THE mainstay of 3 finger banjo picking whether it be stating the melody or imporovising around it. I honestly think banjo books and teachers do a better job of explaining it than guitar ones (with Marcel a notable and stellar exception).

    Very enjoyable in all respects, and also the simplest, most accessible and accurate way I have ever heard crosspicking floating and 6th described. Happy Christmas, Marcel.

    OK Big Billy Goat, you have supplied a wonderful pre-Christmas harvest. This will enable great improvement to everybody's attempts at moving regular melody picking into crosspicking presentation. I have always started students with crosspicking mechanical exercises and then made them write out the basic melody in tab and then build the crosspicking into and around the melody. Your teaching is fantastic. With the 6th's, I get the student to pick the melody and the"tenor" harmony. Then I get them to move the "tenor" harmony down an octave, thus the 6th, just another approach. As always wonderful sharing. My students love, use, and purchase your stuff. Thanks for your generosity and Merry Christmas Goat.

    I’ve been playing guitar for about 4 years now, learning almost exclusively through TH-cam, and this lesson really blew me away! Excellent stuff

    Hey Marcel, Your content continues to exceed expectations - which are already pretty high. Not only did you give us some clearly explained arrangements to wow our families, you actually solved some musical mysteries like "A third is a sixth inside out." I hope to get back into your private lessons schedule in the new year. May you and yours have a wonderful Christmas holiday and a great 2023.

    Thanks Marcel! This really gave me some ideas to work in to some songs I plan on messing around with. There are a couple of songs I first learned when I started learning guitar just over 3 years ago now & I really wanted to grass them up a little just to see what I can come up with. Thanks for giving me some tunes to play for the next week in hopes I annoy them all! Happy Holidays all!

    Man, I had a dream that Patrick from Copenhagen left Billy Strings' guitar at my house.
    When him and Billy Strings came back for the guitar, it was full of water, and it all came unglued right before our eyes.
    The last thing I remember that banjo dude was chasing me down the road!
    I have to lay of the burritos on Tuesday nights!

    If possible, please make a new version of "Happy Birthday" song strumming in acoustic guitar. Everywhere in youtube the same boring basic chords strumming - G, C, D . Noone has come out with something new chords strumming.. I tried with SUS chords , sounding horrible . Would love to see your version on it whenever you find time 🙏. Thanks !

    Another good way is to Carter Scratch it in a Tony Rice style. Using full C and F chords utilising the Tony Thumb technique.

    So the 6ths seems like it's interval practice for the key you are in, no big secrets there. The cross-picking strategies for highest/lowest note and the open strings strategies are easy enough to apply looking at a chart or even working it out on the fingerboard with some time. Is it possible to take those efforts and make them work on the fly in a solo break situation. Asked another way, how much pre-arrangment do you think David Grier uses?

    • @LessonsWithMarcel
      @LessonsWithMarcel  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All three of these techniques can be used in the moment without arranging things beforehand, at least with enough practice they can be. And the best way to practice is to make arrangements like these. I find the sixths easy to apply immediately its essentially all pattern based, I can crosspick most melodies with relatively little thought or planning, but the floating is where things get tough. I can float simple melodies easily but as soon as a melody gets slightly more complex I need to sit and think about it and/or write it out. I have seen very few if any people learn a complex melody and then immediately know how to float it. So context matters, if a song is complicated enough even David Grier has to think about it a little but the amount of pre-arrangement is probably less than you think.
