  • Learn cross picking on acoustic guitar in just 4 easy steps with this simple, easy-to-use approach!
Cross picking is a picking pattern that involves skipping strings in your picking pattern. It doesn't use fingers, instead opting for a pick. It's a great way to get that cascading finger pick sound but with more bite!
The hardest part of cross picking lies in switching pick directions. While normal strumming strikes all the strings in one direction, cross picking has you alternating pick direction with each string you strike.
To help you learn how to cross pick, I've created 4 easy steps - think of them as checkpoints or mini-lessons. Once you feel good at one part, move on to the next one!
On one final note, don't forget to check out the cross picking musicians that I've listed in the episode. They're incredibly talented and worth giving a listen to if you're interested in learning this great strumming pattern.

Tony, here’s a dose of reality. I’m retired and look forward to my practice routine every day. I’ve played not quite three years, buying my first guitar at age 70. My biggest challenge is physical flexibility, arthritis which slows finger style speed. And I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you learning new songs takes a while. I’m not complaining because I love what I can do with the guitar and look forward to a couple of one hour sessions per day working on specific practice techniques and strumming my favorite songs. I look forward to Acoustic Tuesday, thank you.

Love this. Keep at it, Fred. The destination is great but, as with life, the journey is the point.

Hey Fred! I'm not 70, but in my 50's. I understand a bit of what your talking about because I just started myself (thats what you do when you turn 50 right?). I'm also in the medical field so I know (and have) arthritis. A few tips with that horrible disease. Don't play for a long time. Play for a little while, but not for hours. It will cause inflammation to build up and flare up your arthritis. I understand the want of wanting to play more, but it will hurt. It will cause your joints to not function as they should which will frustrate you and teach you improper techniques. 30-1hr is about what I go for myself. With that being said, the more you use your hands, the better and easier it will get and the longer you can play. But still dont play for hours because of the above reasoning. Btw, Ice is your best friend for bringing down inflammation. Just holding a bag of ice in your hands will do wonders. Tylenol Arthritis is a nice drug if you need to take one. I dont like drugs myself, but natural methods, but when you need to, you need to. GL and keep playing!

I just discovered Bob Minner a few weeks ago and have known about Kenny Smith for a little while. Such awesome cross pickers. Glad you mentioned them. Bob Minner has been playing with what's his name (Faith Hills husband) for years.

Yes!!! Finally!!! This and TravisPicking is the key to guitar playing. Very underestimated! Thank you. Started this technique 5 years ago. Playing almost all songs now and it will take alot alot of time to master it.

I really needed to hear that advice on guitar routine. We got a new puppy in June and I told myself I didn’t have time now for guitar. Your reminder of 10 minutes really resonated. I will be back to my routine.

Turning rolls into muscle memory is worth the countless hours to perfect to get it fast and clean. I'm around 80% to perfection, but the journey to get better is fun. Lots of weed really helps me with having the patience.

I love the sound of "cross picking", but in terms of notes, it seems to be basically what you do when finger picking. Finger pickers have to change technique when picking a single string picking, like alternating thumb and finger of your choice, though classical players will use index and middle fingers to trill a single string. Cross picking with a pick is very hard for me, but finger picking just comes naturally for some reason, probably because you can lay your fingers on the strings and rarely change them. You have 4 fingers to work 6 strings or even 5 fingers if you can get your thumb in there. A pick has to get very busy to keep up with finger picking, except for single string picking.

Never done it before, always wondered what it was, now I see it! Thanks Tony, now to try some tunes, maybe some that aren't normally cross-picked?

Hey Tony. I'm on the hunt for for cross picking exercises. Your explanation was as good as it gets but it would be great to have more drill and exercises. Any ideas?

Man, this might be and probably is a stupid question , forgive me please, but does guitar picks make a big difference in playing the guitar besides being louder when using a pic. I use a pic or my fingers and notice little difference , maybe because I don’t hear so well is part of the problem. Lol.

Please tell us the difference once between: FLATPICKING TRAVISPICKING CROSSPICKING CHICKENPICKING HYBRIDPICKING etc. Thanks again.

    • @freesk8
      @freesk8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Travis picking is a fingerstyle pattern with an alternating bass hit with the thumb. There are many different Travis patterns, but they all use three or four right hand fingers and alternate the bass with the thumb. Hybrid picking is when you hold the pick with thumb and index, but then also hit some higher (pitch) strings with the middle, ring and sometimes pinky. Crosspicking was explained in the video. I'm not sure about chicken picking, but my guess is that it is just a folksy name for Travis picking. Flatpicking is with a pick.

Why use a video of Molly playing something so slow and simple compared to the guys? This didn't give anyone a good idea of her awesomeness.
