Picturing everyone hitting a g-run at the same time reminds me of all the young kids doing the Floss dance in the last 7 years at the same time as every kid event.
"Musicians are supposed to be pretty good at counting to 4" Love it 😂
Miscounting is part of pumping the algorithm. It drives commenters correcting the "mistake". I'm not sure the tuning wasn't done for the same reason.
I don't think so. The percentage of people that could tell is not very large.
@@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer but the minority that can is a vocal minority 😅
Me. 😂
Tony Rice said to learn to play good rhythm first which is harder than picking. He said there were few really good rhythm players but Del McCoury was one of them.
Man, bluegrass is difficult to play, but you're making it so much more accessible! Great teaching approach. Thank you!
It's an easy genre to learn and start playing in a jam situation in very little time if you put in a bit of practice (learn the boom-chuck and the keys of G, C and D and how a capo works). But to get good, it's going to be a journey. Marcel is great resource though. Countless hours of videos with some really great advice and techniques worth learning
Marcel, thank you for clarification. Your comments and demonstrations are spot-on funny too. Good job
I would love to make a video for Sean titled: "How to tune your guitar in one minute". 😀 (and thats not hyperbole)
Absolutely!
Enjoyable as always, Marcel. Good description of why the bluegrass 3 isn't really a major or minor 3. I think Aimee Nolte calls it a neutral 3, which is perfect. Also, us old guys love to see you with your cap on frontwise!
How do you pack so much quality goodness into such a short video??? You sir are a legend.
Maybe not a hit piece but definitely a drive by 😂
this is really well shot fam
massive props
his vid has showed up in my shorts like 15 times
Pah, a nine minute video?! I could master bluegrass guitar 8 times over in nine minutes!
Love it brother
You are a star ! Cheers from New Zealand
Very useful info, Marcel. I'm an intermediate level player using mostly finger picking styles (no Travis picking yet, but in the plan), and just starting to use a pick and trying to play bluegrass rhythms. Not as easy as it looks. So, I'll be checking out your lessons for tips for learning flat picking and bluegrass rhythms, and breaks/leads down the road. Thanks for the video!
Great video tks! 🤠
Excellent content apart, editing in this channel is superb
Love your shirt dude also love the hat and the tattoos
4:16 anybody else see that horse poking out of the sound hole or did I forget to take my meds again?
Excellent video. I appreciate your take on being a good rhythm guitarist, as that has been my primary habitat. I always try to learn and grow, but I'm just not a lead guitarist. Sure, I have the songs I can play lead on, but I'm not busting out breaks on the fly when I get the head nod. I'd rather pass it along to someone who can serve the song better
Dude you are a wise man! Thanks
The only thing I mastered in one minute is taking a rest break.
I too like the Croce shirt!!!
Proof that you can be a phenomenal guitar player and still be a dog-ass bluegrass player. Respect the grass
Marcel you’re cool I subbed keep ‘em coming cowboy 🤟🤝🤟
Fun video, thanks.
great video,, !
I tend to palm mute the low E string when boom-chucking. Do most guys leave it unmuted? I find the low E string can get a bit overwhelming at times if I don't. Great pickin' as always!
hold your guitar, put on a tony rice album, and don't move an inch until it's over.
you can put your guitar down now.
one of the most fun ways to learn!
I too am paralyzed in fear when I listen to Tony Rice
@@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer 😂 a very relatable experience
Yes once you watch Tony and listen, you know there is no way you will ever reach this level. If there was there would be millions sounding just like Tony. Those long fingers of his certainly helped.
7:08 nice subtle tron appearance
Wonder if he will be at wintergrass this year.
1:57 I'm legit laughing out loud thank you
Thank you so much for this - extremely satisfying for that somewhat ridiculous short to be turned into a real bluegrass lesson
You could not find a nicer, more intelligent and skilled guitar YT'er to do a drive by shooting, than Marcel !!
Now some of you won't agree, but whoever he is critiquing in that video, is playing sandlot, and our man is playing in the professional league.
The videos Marcel references are some of his finest. And yes some of us remember his 1st videos back in the wet coast days.
They are quite good, not the skill and polish of today, but very high quality by YT standards ,, and mine.
Thanks for posting,,, this was fun !!
Oh and thanks to the really wonderful group of people who gather on thsi channel.
Not going to lie… I read the title and noticed that the video is nine minutes long and got a little confused. 😂
Anyone know what kind of capo Marcel is using?
Just a heads up, I watch your stuff like a tv show
I watch both your channels what I like about Sean is he will give you a tip that's like one those huge exit signs you see on the interstate as you fly by at 70 mph that you'd normally drive right passed. Sean is like "hey stupid you're gonna miss the turn off, tell em Sean sent you," Marcel's more like "now you're here "schools in please pay attention to this wonderful view".
without music the world would Bb
Oh hell yes I just did it 59 seconds and I’m awesome
"My stock Toyota Camry has auto tune. I was made in Japan 375,000 km ago."
His first tip should have been to make sure he's in tune
That tuning... it hurts
If Sean was playing a Martin D18-45, I wouldn’t be as offended.
I sure would be. He has the guitar that’s perfect for him
😂😂😂 Tony always said, Tuning, Timing, Tone!
Thank God for guys on here like you Marcel! Idiots like that guy should be banded. He needs to learn how to tune his guitar in one minute
"Just the tip".

Here's a dumb rookie question: Since Bb is already a note in the G minor pentatonic scale, is it still considered the dirty 3rd? I know it's a note I can pepper into the G Major pentatonic, but it's not already a part of that scale.
The minor 3rd of most chords in bluegrass are often used as passing tones into the major 3rd. I’ve found it’s not super helpful to think of bluegrass tunes as anything to do with a major or minor scale of any kind. Instead, I like to think of it as ‘peppering’ the chords being played with pepper and whatever other spice you think fits the feel. Most of these tunes kind of occupy a ambiguous space that isn’t strictly major or minor, but that being said, most of the chord progressions imply a major tonality when all is said and done. At the end of the day, that’s why bluegrass is its own genre, imo-it’s oftentimes a song that presents at foundation a major tonality but, with tons of ‘spice’ that makes it ambiguous and continuously changing in feel to better accompany lyrics or feel. The ‘spice’ is often used in passing tones but, it’s the inflection and intent which makes them so important and so definitively ‘bluegrass.’ At the end of the day, try not thinking of a song ‘needing a major or minor pentatonic scale’ and start thinking in the direction of, what kind of ‘spice’ does this particular chord want, that will make it unique, and create a feel that will make this song sound like something different and have its own ‘flavor’ and be distinguished if that makes sense.
Makes perfect sense.👍
And yes TUNE THE GUITAR PLEASE
the out of tune guitar added to the comment feed he knew what he was doing
He should start by tuning his guitar.
Sean has gotten better since he started. He's made a lot of money filming his progress. We admire him a little for being so shameless. All his comment sections are only full of praise. Interesting
I want that shirt....
You can order yours from China on a number of nefarious websites! 10/10 highly recommend.
What's a dirty 3rd?????????????????????????????????????????
Sean Daniel doesn't make the best first impression, but I've learned a lot from watching his channel. Mostly beginner music theory stuff, and generic introductory information. He's got his hustle and style, can't hate on the guy.
Nice bloke, but I cannot watch him for long because he says 'ah' or 'uh' or some such at the end of each word. grr
@@robertnewell5057 agreed
Nice haircut.
that boom chuck thing is shown to fast. sorry to say. your right hand is going so fast I cant see what it does lol
Slow down the speed with settings, upper right hand corner.
I am a thumbpicker, surrounded by bluegrass pickers. I will use a plectrum in their company, cause I can't resist thumbpicking habits; palm muting, offbeat embellishments, willful fingers, plus, I flatpick better with a plectrum. Wish me luck.
Good video! You handled it great! You could hv torn Sean up! I like Sean but he was definitely out of his depth on this one.. I think he knew tht!
I ain't listening to anyone can't be bothered to tune the freaking guitar.
Shawn is great and funny. He also gave you content for a new video.
“C’mon man! That guitar was in perfect tune, just like the security locks around all my classified documents.”
- Joe Biden
Welp, guess I should unlearn muted strums.
Dude you used the very same clickbait you criticized him for using.
also get a guitar made of wood
So much for bluegrass jazz and assorted things. The rhythms of jazz, bebop, swing, and such are too different than the boom chuck. Another issue is that for a bango picker to adjust their fingerpicking rhythms to produce any of the myriad of assorted jazz rhythms is way harder even than picking the slick bluegrass bango patterns themselves. I mean, I don't think Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli playing jazz together with a banjo player who finger picks his fancy twirls and riffs that come out as bluegrass would mesh good together? I know Bela Fleck can play dissonance. But, can he pick the Beverly Hillbillies theme song to a Latin or bebop beat? And would that song sound jazzy if it was colored up with jazzy chords and a jazzy rhythm?
In a 9 minute video
That short was so bad it would put off anyone wishing to take up BG…
NO No the first thing is don't show up with a plastic guitar.
First
#4 Don't bring a plastic guitar to a bluegrass jam. Or maybe it was bring a turner to a BG jam. Can't count to 4? Try 3/4, Yeah that'll work. Sometimes.
Click bait worth watching.
wow was that the worst sounding most out of tune guitar of all time.
Made my day, I thought mine was!
Marcel you are a nice guy, I think Seans childish approach to a great art form is just plain stupid, immature and not funny or clever.
Not only was Sean’s guitar not in tune… it sounded terrible. Just sounded like strings, no natural wood sound.
His video was obviously a joke. Responding to it ruins it.
Guitar is out of tune
That was a terrible video 😂
Dude Ive been learning the guitar for two years and had to unsubscribe that Sean guy. Sooooo pretentious and overly sarcastic lol.
Sean comes across as very pretentious and arrogant-can't watch his stuff!
You're too kind Marcel---seems like he's just being an idiot by disparaging bluegrass. Not worth the attention IMO.
Most of his videos are click bait. Not a fan. Don't watch.
Even tho he owns '52 black Vincent
I see your shirt. I've lived in Johnson City my whole life. The gospel is 1cor15:1-4KJV how that Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day according to the scriptures. If you believe this the Holy Spirit entwines with your soul creating a new creature in Christ who is saved from hell and whose sin debt is paid in full by the blood of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Don't trust anything but the blood of Jesus for salvation. Not by ourselves it is a gift from God through faith in the finished work of Christ.
This comment made me better at bluegrass
@Lumix247 Jesus is DEAD! Your judeo christian God is not real!
I believe he is intentionally out of tune and the humorous part is folks not picking up on that.
[ G -🏃♂]
What the f#$k was that lmao?
