I’ve often fantasized about this song being played at my funeral. I can’t think of a better way to go out than to the sound of one of the most beautiful sounds I’ve ever heard.

@carolinewoodward1016 I was much younger when I posted this and much more fanatical. Just watch the post date. I've mellowed down much since then. I adore Pete, he's a genius. As for Bob, he offered something sweet, jazzy, far-out and very "Californian". I sincerely adore the Heroes Are Hard To Find lp and his offerings. I've played this album to death. Fame was harsh on him. But my real love remains this blond child-prodigy, Danny. I see my post now and I feel a little bit 'ashamed'. Because I've also worshipped Green. He was my hero.

The entire Bare Trees album is simply wonderful. (I still literally remember exactly where I was standing the very first time I heard the record.). Great songs, and over the decades, Danny's guitar playing has come to be among my favorites. Such an unusual mix of bluesy sadness and gentleness. And almost all of his stuff in those days was just a Les Paul plugged into an amp. Supposedly, he only owned one pedal, and didn't use it that much. It's a rare guitarist these day who can sound wonderful doing that.

  • @texas4christ

Spreading love for danny is necessary . Few know of him, he is mistaken for others, even guitarists with a certain age and level of expertise really do not know more than a very small percentage of his work. He is too wonderful to be ignored

The original lineup - Danny, Peter and Jeremy -- was a guitar trio that simply defies comparison. I know some will want to disagree, but if you go back to 1969-71, and compare the sheer volume and quality of the Mac catalogue with that of the far more "famous" Yardbirds trio, it is hard to avoid this conclusion. And consider the implications (when you look at what Beck/Page/Clapton produced in their careers) !!!! If Danny and Jeremy had survived the early years, mentally and emotionally, and if Peter had been a bit easier to get along with as a person/bandmate/friend, imagine what they might have done!

I walked in Danny's footsteps in Brixton. I asked several guitar shops on Denmark street, London if i could get Danny an acoustic guitar at the men's home where Danny lived. The Wunjos guitar shop guy( he is not there as of October 2019) smiled and showed me the letter of thanks from Danny, in Danny's shaky handwriting , for the guitar just received. I was a few weeks late, but totally happy that someone/anyone felt the same love for Danny. May God bless our beloved superstar

Yes, some people have made judgments about Kirwan that you read and think, "what?!?!?"
As others have pointed out, the lyrics to Dust are indeed from a poem of the same name by British poet Rupert Brooke. Danny set the first two stanzas to music in a way that is so fitting, so moving, and so unusual, that I doubt any other artist of that or any time since could have done as well. It's awe-inspiring. And keep in mind, it may have been the record company who neglected to credit Brooke.

When your swift hair is quiet in death
And through the lips corruption thrust to still the labor of my breath
    When we are dust

This was my favorite album when it came out. I lament the lack of live videos of FM from this period...Kiln House, Future Games, Bare Trees. Hardly anything here on youtube yet they must exist. I hope someone uploads some in the future.

Please realize if I comment on how much I love Christine and Bob Welch and yes, even Lindsey & Stevie, that doesn't take anything away from those that went before. I love Danny and Jeremy and Peter even more.

'je ne sais quoi' according to the spell/search checker above right.
sensitive unique people are often labled negatively and become defensive or react, then they find they are prevented from exploring their idea's, i don't know if thats what happened to Danny Kirwan but his work has a rare dream like quality that doesn't age a day, whatever the 'certain something' was its a very beautiful certain something. i really like his Poems to Music idea, gives them colour and dimension from black and white on a page, really nice every time.

Shame looks like Danny steerd Mac to a different sound and towards a Mac that Fleetwood Mac were looking for . So when carrying that band and finally having a mental breakdown he gets shafted blamed and left. And still to this day doesn't get a thanks for the direction he took them . Gets leafy out off all the Fleetwood documentrys 😔😢

@Patfaki - Agreed about the "saddest songs". Danny was unique, in my experience, because his beautiful melodies and guitar work still betrayed such sadness & loneliness. About as wistful as rock music ever got. A bit reminiscent of Nick Drake, but Nick was more overt about it. With Danny it was always hiding just beneath the surface. "Dust" is one of the few times when he simply gave in to it. Dust, Sunny Side of Heaven, Hot Summer Day & Second Chapter make for a pretty amazing sampler.

Yes, as everyone else has said, this song, this album, is pure genius, as is the Bare Trees album. Danny Kirwan's music is beautiful. I'm glad TH-cam hasn't yanked this video, probably because the soundtrack is from vinyl, making it impossible to automatically detect. Danny, where are you?
