- Arguably the finest of Danny's instrumental ballads. In this live version he varies his guitar riffs, thus distinguishing it from the studio version. Does it not evoke the Sunny Side of Heaven?
The greatest guitar instrumental ever written and played. No wild antics, no showing off, no shredding.... just pure music, delicately played with skill and love. Please play this at my funeral, I want this to go with me.... to Heaven.
Well said sir
how powerful the beauty of music is. RIP Danny🎸🎸🎸🎸
Dear Daniel Kirwan, you have been my guitar hero since you joined Fleetwood mac! When you left the band I never felt the same about the group! Peter, Jeremy and Danny were the Real Band!
What about Mick and Bob Brunning?
my thoughts exactly. I thought the contributions he made to FM musically and lyrically were among their best
Totally agreed. 1000%
Kirwan never received his full due. Saw him with FM 2 times.
Saw him play his last show with the band in NYC. Unbeleivable talent. RIP DANNY 🙏
One of my all-time favorite Danny Kirwan songs, so beautiful and atmospheric, always takes me away to a different place and time. Lovely live version, never heard it before.
That is one beautiful piece of guitar work isn't it? So it is.
RIP Christine McVie. You will forever be missed in the hearts of many, forever.
The best era for fl.mac was when kirwin and welch were in..My opinion. This tune will always remind me of driving from NY to Caif. after high school in the '70's.Bare Trees...
Bare Trees, what a GREAT album, start to finish
R.I.P. Danny Kirwan; miss him. Peter Green was exceptional of course, but I have always loved Danny the most.
I love them both equally, as songwriters, vocalists, but, most of all as lead guitarists 🎸 🎸 😢 ♥️
One of the most beautiful guitar instrumentals ever. Danny was a genius.
This makes me cry..
I hear you. Those newly added riffs starting at 2:50 choke me up every time.
..cheers robert, thankyou.. i'm with you.. good find..
I am crying now.. Dear Danny, a real genius, I love you
@@diegourrutia8375 I understand. I was listening to this song last year with my wife and I broke down saying "No one plays like this anymore". a song like this makes you forget the shitty world we have made.
What a guitar(V?)Danny forever!
What an artist Danny was, wish he'd get more credit for his musical contributions. Sad that lots of fleetwood mac fans, have no clue who he is.
all they know is from the time Buckingham and Nicks joined the band.. not even "Buckingham Nicks" ....
Middle era Mac was the best Mac. Danny honored Peter’s tremendous influence on guitar and the overall tone of his writing. Christine was allowed to step forward and her vocals are way more evocative of Peter’s original intent than Stevie’s. And Bob was the ego to Danny’s id, a pure power pop writer who created sparkling hooks, just enough guitar, and lyrics that meant something. Future Games, Bare Trees, Mystery To Me, and Heroes are all masterpieces and they all carried Peter’s and Danny’s spirit. Peak Mac.
@@MWLUCKY thank you; finally someone who can recognize that welch, kirwan, mcvie, and partially spencer, in their all prime periods alone are nearly a supergroup if you think about it. bob welch held it down as the front man, becoming a dynamic songwriter and vocalist with a great prime in the later bridge years, danny kirwan lead success as a signature guitar player and one of my favorite elements to the band in the early to mid bridge years, CHRISTINE FUCKING MCVIE, yeah the same one that held it down w Buckingham/Nicks, at a nearly younger and still improving primal state of a songwriter and vocalist, along to show that the great peter green og backman jeremy spencer was still getting it done. All while under the same consistently great rhythm section of fleetwood/mcvie? the men who’ve done it all? manage to provide something to the track always, even if it’s not the focus?? man. green is an icon that is likely (if) the only other member people can name, or all their blues is remembered for, but when you hear future games through 1973, you really realize that the bridge years have a lot of music to offer that even the peak pop band couldnt.
People with a good ear and other musicians know, might be better that way somehow but I understand the sentiment.
@@thetcro477 I love bob welch era
What a great find. It just doesn’t get any better than the music and guitar playing of Danny Kirwan. Thanks for sharing
My dearest Danny, I hope to meet you on the sunny side of heaven someday 💙
Oh my God that guitar tone is pure bliss.
A rare and brilliant melodic sense.
Yes, my words exactly
A few years ago, my dear friend turned me onto the Bare Trees album. Not knowing anything of Fleetwood Mac beyond the Nicks/Buckingham lineup, this album was an eye opening revalation. The Welch/Kirwan/McVie/McVie/Fleetwood lineup is now a personal favorite; the most important bridge to the later Supergroup. Bare Trees and Future Games are must-haves for an FM fan.
Precisely. These are my favorite Mac Albums.
Don't think I've ever heard this song live before. Love it.
Hauntingly beautiful.
I remember seeing the Kirwan/Welch era Mac at the old Capitol in Portchester NY right after the release of Bare Trees, with Savoy Brown opening. For the 2nd encore both bands came out and jammed for another hour. An incredible night, still in my memory after all these yrs.
Danny Kirwan jamming with Kim Simmonds, another great pairing of lead guitarists 🎸 🎸 🙌 👏 👍 🎸
@@jayblumetti9590 My teenage rock band at the time was covering tunes by both bands, so it was a truly remarkable night.
I saw the same billing in Boulder Colorado around 1971 or 1972.
An epic event for sure!!
Happy 70th Birtday Danny today.R.I.P.
Oh my! I've forgotten how really great these guitar players for Fleetwoodmac were , Peter, Danny, Jeremy, my I don't think any one comes close , how beautiful they played together, raw blues , and many different sounds, this one wow nothing like it. Such a great sound.
Hi Robert ,I am lucky an angel helped me find Danny's live versions of these great songs, thanks to your work . Long ago , I fell easily for Peter Green, for Jeff Beck and Pete Townsend,Eric Clapton and David Gilmour . For Danny I had to get up off my ass and find out what the heck was happening , and who did what . My first( American) Then Play On did not include all 7 Kirwan songs .,but I didn't know that then . Besides that I was so giddy about it and that it was an all new direction from Peter .from mostly non original blues songs to a beautiful new kind of blues - as great a happening as the emerging prog rockers and their synthesizers and mellotrons. As a comparison of Brit and American albums I remember Jimi Hendrix 's first American Are You Experienced release was only 10 songs ,unlike the 17 songs on the British version. It was Danny though that was the catalyst ,not Peter .Danny's creativity spurred Peter. Peter admitted decades later that those fabulous instrumentals Underway and Albatross were helped along by Danny . Besides Danny's blues songs were all originals . Without You is as great as any blues song . Decades later Danny's 8 or 9 more blues originals could be found on various compilations . If all of his blues songs were presented on one disk , the blues world might find Danny's brilliance equal to Ledbelly and Albert and BB King and Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf, Hubert Sumlin, and Willie Dixon.,etc etc.
And then Danny focused on fresh and exciting and utterly gorgeous songs .
Danny is also an unusually sentimental and loving soul . To cry while playing his heartfelt music ,to be so overwhelmed by the beauty of it all ,well , he may be the only one know of . .I know If I try to play a song by Danny to my 6 and 8 year old nephews ,I wil eventually tear up and cry every time ,and they know it ,and I know it, and we will have a lot of laughs about it. So, I get a an idea of how music was something so special to him it sometimes left him in tears and got embarrassing and called for a lot of beer and wine,or whiskey He is our hero with a ton of inner beauty and outer beauty.
@ James Prichard- I'm not great with words, but you said it all!! Danny was such a sensitive, special soul. He gave us so much with his music. I've been listening t
@ James Prichard- Sorry, I wasn't finished with my comment! I've been listening to Lovely Days & Silver Streams every day when I wake up, as they help me face the days, which have been hard lately. I love listening to all his music, he had such a special gift. So glad to hear from other Danny fans!! Take care, best wishes💙🌟💙🎶🎶💯
You have said it! all what I felt and think about Danny and his work... man, you have all the real words!!! BRAVO
@@deborahbrown6408 I can't believe the magic of Danny, I always listen to Although the sun is shining at night. Every night I can sleep with this song ❤️
I totally agree with you, wish someone would rerelease his album Second Chapter. Danny Kirwan’s music is very special both musically and lyrically he deserves much more respect. Xxx
This illustrates what a sensitive soul he was. Beautifully lyrical.
The lyrics are so understated, so infinitely concise.
sublime...forever in love with Danny Kirwan
Hauntingly beautiful🎸
A beautiful song from the song smith Danny Kirwan.
Saw mac with Danny in one of shows before he left. Wow
I’ve been looking for this show, this was 2 days before my 16th birthday, and 2 friends and I went, we got invited to party with the band but one friend had to be home, wish we had sent her home in a cab! Talk about missed opportunity to meet my hero, and who knew Danny would leave the band? A such a phenomenal guitarist, he touched my teenage soul.
Was this in Long Beach Ca? Where? Just beautiful.
Don't you hate that? When someone has to get home, and you don't and the party about to start. Some ppl are so dang responsible. Sorry you missed meeting him. What a doll. At least you caught the show.
"Invited to party 🥳 🎉 with the band", WHEW! Lucky you guys, like the "chosen few"! That's awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍 💖
This song just takes me away, the Mac were instrumental kings in their day. I love every version of the band, they all produced music that could touch your heart or stimulate your brain. I find that of all the records they produced, plus a couple of bootlegs I have I tend to listen to "Bare Trees" more than the others.
Me too.
This is when I thought the band was at it’s best. Always my favorite song by them. Before they went commercial.
Guitar genius pure and simple. Easily on a par with Peter Green in their heyday. Both conveyed emotion without resort to clichéd (and boring) "shredding".
Amen brother..there'll never be a group like the original FLEETWOOD MAC
He is barely mentioned in Mick Fleetwood’s book, so sad he had such phenomenal playing and writing ability and i have always thought the rest of the group after Peter Green left, treated him with a disdain he did not deserve, difficult and edgy he may have been, but he gave a lot of himself to that band, and he should have been appreciated much more than he was. I love Second Chapter his solo album some great songs. Xxx
@@marywebber593 such a pity...Danny was an artist and musician. That most people don't understand..He's my favorite of the mac guitarists..greenbaum..spencer..welch..in that order after Danny..great job
@Mary Webber And the Danny Kirwan solo LP released in 1976. Great cover version of "Let It Be"! The original FM were in the same league as The Beatles (I.M.O.)
Absolutely Beautiful
always loved this song ,really underated
Awesome song by Danny Kirwan!
why is this so eerie
Brilliant.
Thank you for sharing.
This is new , it is brilliant , maybe Danny's best live song . Thanks . It is awesome . Thanks .I hear Christine and Danny finding a Richard Wright/David Gilmour groove . There is something nice between those two and perhaps more may be found
Oh ,and he looks so beautiful ,thanks for the photo
Thanks James very much. It is so great to have you back. Danny Kirwan fans are like no other and I consider you tops among all of them.
@Rough Acres That caught my attention.
It would be up to Gilmour/Wright to find Danny's groove. Danny channeled no mortals. His inspiration came from a higher place.
@@jg6698
Definitely, agree 100%.
Danny's non-blues songs are some of FMs best. Listen to Dust, Woman of 1000 years, Sands of Time and Draganfly to enjoy other examples of his brilliant composing. However, it was the support of the other FM members that helped to hone each tune/song to such a high quality.
Very well put. Couldn't say any better.
Was trying to put into words, what Danny's music sounded like. "Sunny Side" was written so beautifully it can be compared to the classical music written by the great composers. His music paints a scene in your mind...just as the great composers did with their music. If I can't fall asleep or I'm stressed out...forget about those mood altering CD's with rain, train sounds, etc. I play the older Fleetwood Mac music with Danny's infuence. I fall asleep everytime & have pleasant dreams as well. "Bare Trees" & "Future Games", etc.
Exquisite.
Playing thru the reverb unit of his amp- so good at channeling Peter Green!
Peter and Danny "channeled" each other, live, "call & response", brilliant, spontaneous conversations 👏
Danny channeled no mortal soul. He was inspired from the heavens.
Answers a question I didn’t know I was asking.
Wonderful 🙂👍♥️
Beautiful!
This is so amazing. Never realised these songs were played live. Always assumed any concerts would have used mainly uptempo and early FWM blues
Thanks for putting this out, it's wonderful to hear
First heard this early 1973 6 am Wilshire Blvd walking from Hollywood toward La Brea a mansion on Wilshire was playing It on a very good stereo volume about 7-8 over and over
amazing that you remember those details. it is a beautiful song.
Brilliant and beautiful.
I'm from long beach,in 72 I was 14/15.
This blew me away when I heard it recently f mom a while ago.
strong CA nostalgia on this one
I can imagine Christine singing some lyrics to the second part. The melody is reminiscent of her writing. Not taking anything away from Danny. Maybe he even influenced her.
love
Cin cin. Buon fortuna. Antonio Futura Tiani Jacqi Lucrezia Zeppo Ste Fiorina etcetera e così via. Ancoats Milesplatting M/cr N/Qtr.
Even though the opening melody is a near total copy of John Barry's You Only Live Twice/Midnight Cowboy, its nostalgia is beautiful. Kirwan was a fantastic talent. Wish he were still among us, healthy & playing new stuff.
Glad I am not the only who noticed that.
Similar. But the exact notation of that passage is a bit different. A bit too similar perhaps but the songs are very different too. And Danny doesn't overdo it. It's a close call.
I wonder who else was on the bill that night, in CA. Guessing there were USN sailors at that show. The Long Beach Naval Yards were operating back then. Thanks for posting. Lovely. Is there more? Quality is excellent. I saw the Philly stop of this 72 tour (w/ Bob Welsh) in late April.
Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke along with McKendree Spring played on that date. The concert was at the Fox West Coast Theatre. The quality is excellent because there are no vocals during the song. Good thing FM is heavy on the instrumentals.
@@RobbyByrne I looked up pictures of the Fox Theater, Long Beach. It opened in 1925 and was demolished in 1987. A hotel was built on the site. It was one of those fancy, ornate, “palace” style theaters built by Fox, in various cities around the US. Capacity was 2,300.
Separately, I recognize the McKendree Spring band name but am unfamiliar with their music. The other band I haven’t heard of before.
Alohi ma Danny Kirwan, alohi ma....Aloha
What a tormented soul he was along with his wingman Peter Greene after Munich Germany trip which they never came back from
There are numerous reports from people on the scene that Danny did not go to the compound that night. Only Green and roadie Dennis Keane attended.
So, so many unknowable questions about this episode. If you weren't there, don't presume anything.
mick and john were trying to get them both out of there when they were in the car jeramy and john noticed they both looked like they had a stroke or something and they both suffered the same fait
@@jayblumetti9590 who's presuming anything? There were numerous people quoted. Doesn't make it fact.
@@jg6698 Believing "numerous reports from people on the scene" is technically & legally known as "hear say"! A.K.A. supposition or "presumption",= presuming something is factual. BUTT IT IS NOT FACTUAL! THAT'S WHAT I SAID 11 MONTHS AGO! CAPECE??DUH!
Many people confused Kirwan playing for Greens which tells you how good he was
Good stuff audio a little low on max ??
You have some nice uploads of Danny, I started following Fleetwood Mac around 69', Danny was always as precious as Peter was and loved his style and songwriting, Peter too but I gravitated towards Danny a bit more, check out my Danny Kirwan Archives playlist on my channel, thanks for all of the great stuff👍💎😸
Thank you, sir. I did look you up and what I really noticed besides Danny was the Bruin / Northstars game back in 77 on your channel. Big Ranger fan who can't get enough of NHL hockey.
@@RobbyByrne yes, I use to record hockey games on, AM radio in the 60's and 70's, NY was difficult to bring in on radio, I got St Louis, Detroit, Chicago,Minn, Pittsburgh, i even picked up Salt Lake once
Man, we do have much in common. I taped ranger radio broadcasts in 71-72. Still have half of them.@@Afterburner2
Look, Buckingham and Nicks were brought in by Mick Fleetwood to save his band. Nobody told Green or Kirwan to leave. They each had demons to deal with, as did Spencer. So we’re talking about two different bands altogether. Three if you count the transition. So if you dislike the last iteration, fine, but don’t blame B&N, blame the demons.
The story I read was that actually the band told Kirwan to leave. He had a big meltdown before a concert promoting the Bare Trees Album in 1972. Smashed his prized guitar and wouldn't go out on stage. They fired him not long after that outburst.
The tone to me sounds reminiscent of some Allman Brothers. Anyone else get that vibe?
For sure, if any group was the American version of FM it was the Allman Bros IMHO. For another example, the jam at the end of "Spare Me a Little of Your Love" sounds a lot like "Jessica". But "Spare Me" was from Bare Trees in 1972 and "Jessica" was from Brothers and Sisters in 1973,
Sounds like Gene Clark to me but nought wrong with that, heartfelt and a touch of hope.
@@networkcobbler I totally agree as well
No
HE SORTA TRAILS OFF THERE, AROUND THREE MINUTES.
Wow! The dude was far and away more talented than PG. His FM songs were always my favourites. Soft spot for jewel eyed judy. Man could sing!
Jewel eyed Judy fantastic song👍👍
fans of this song would also like tomorrow’s love by the ventures
Like velvet
Unfortunately a lot of people have not even heard of FM before the Lindsey Fuckingham and Stevie Pricks version of this great band. Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwin and Bob Welch mean NOTHING to 75% of today’s FM fans. Sad because they were great from the very beginning to the end of the Bob Welch error. Then they went to commercial shit and made millions. Sad - but let’s face it - money is what it’s all about.
素晴らしい❗️
私的、彼の最高傑作です。
he sounds so much like Peter Green in his playing
Lucky Dan, to see musical genius all he had to do is to look in a mirror.
So psychedelic...
This couldn’t have been long before he had his breakdown and was kicked out of the group.
I hear this, I hear how it could well have influenced Khruangbin... but that is just me...
thats what i thought by hearing albatross and this one
Yup, in fact listening to Khruangbin tonight reminded me to revisit classic Fleetwood Mac instrumentals, specifically this song.
yes also maybe Mac de marco?
Danny sounded great thru most of this recording, he fumbled a bit at certain points though. Mightve been drunk or somthin
or issues with tuning.
