    This video shows you how to diagnose the problems with the ice maker not making ice. If the ice maker in your freezer has stopped making ice, I have a quick solution for you to get it working again. Keep in mind this may not work for everyone but it’s worth trying before calling a repairman. At least this is what worked for me in this situation. My ice maker was working just fine and then suddenly one day it wouldn’t make any ice. One of the first things I looked for was something blocking the door sensor. Your freezer might be different but on mine the indicator light blinks when the sensor is blocked. When the door is closed and the path is clear of objects, the light should stay on constantly. Move stuff out of the way if there’s something blocking the sensor.
    Next, check the water inlet to the icemaker. Mine is easy to see because it’s out in front. Yours might be in the back. This tube fills the icemaker with water for the ice. This was the cause of my problem. The water got frozen from the tube to the icemaker. It was basically one big icicle. Don’t break this icicle. Instead, get a hair dryer and set it on high heat. Using the hair dryer, use the hot air to melt the ice in the water supply tube. This will take at least several minutes to melt the ice. When you think it’s melted, check to see if there is any ice still in the tube. Once it’s unfrozen, your icemaker will be able to get water to start making ice again. Remember that this may not work for all ice maker issues and you may have a bigger problem but do this simple check first to see if you can make ice again. Thanks so much for your video, Mine was an even easier fix! I read the instructions on my freezer which said to make sure the metal arm was down to engage the ice maker. It was up! So I just put it down, and voila - beautiful icemaking sounds seconds later! Now the mystery is, how did that arm get up? All I can think of is that the last time I checked, the ice bin was super full to capacity, so the ice may have forced it up. Then after all the ice was emptied, it remained in that position. Anyway, you've got a new subscriber. ;)

    Hey RenderQ, you are awesome. I could not get the hair dryer close enough to the black rubber spout. I had to remove the ice maker first. Once I got the hair dryer close enough, it's exactly what you described in the video. A few drops of water came out first and the a chuck of ice, followed by a splatter of water. I put everything back together and now it's all good. Many thanks!

    You may or may not be interested in this advice but if you have painful splitting just above your fingernails, you should make it a habit of pushing your cuticles back when your hands are waterlogged (look like raisins). You don't have to go out of your way to soak your hands unless you want to. Your hands will become waterlogged while swimming, bathing, doing dishes, etc... You don't need any special tools to push your cuticles back either. Use your fingernails on your right hand to push back the cuticles on your left hand and vice versa. I mention this because at 1:05 into this video, I see what looks like a split and I can see your cuticle being pulled by your nail. It is normal. As our nails grow, they pull the cuticles. After pushing them back, if your hands are still waterlogged, you can rub your cuticles to get some of it off. After your hands dry, if you feel some sticking up, just carefully trim using a cuticle cutter or fingernail clippers. Just be careful. To you and anyone else reading this, I hope you never feel the pain of splitting cuticles ever again. :)

  • @bmmdye

    Let me add that the reason for the icicle could have been that i turned ice maker off in anticipation of losing power during hurricane florence. Did not want melted ice water to flow into the ice dispenser motor, which happened a few years ago. Ruined it completely.

    Thanks for some excellent ideas. But I have another question. I'm wondering if this stopped up line is related to another problem I have. I have a steady drip in the refrigerator compartment at the bottom on the back and it drips into the refrigerator floor and freezes in a sheet. I intend to use your ideas in unstopping the line, but I'm wondering if this will also help with the freezing in the refrigerator. We get along fine without the water dispenser, but my wife doesn't like to in the bottom every few months with a hair dryer.

      I’m not an expert at fridge repair so I’m not 100% sure about the cause of your leak. But it could be a bad inlet valve. I had a fridge that was leaking water out of the back and replacing the inlet valve completely stopped the leak. I did make a video of the procedure and it you want to check it out here’s my video: th-cam.com/video/irszm6xypnQ/w-d-xo.html

    I did the exact same steps, I even removed the ice maker itself and defrosted it, so it was completely bone dry. Put it back in, the infrared beam works, but no ice... nada, a day later and nothing but the 'claws' tend move position which is odd.

    Thanks... I've unblocked mine so many times using ice picks etc. This should work better. Any idea on why it keeps getting frozen...mine is on old Whirlpool. I even replace the icemaker once...still froze eventually. Any permanent cure other than a new fridge?

    Noticed that my light for the ir switch is not illuminating. Is it a failure of the circuit board or just a sequence issue?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the light isn't illuminating then it's more than just a frozen line. Any way you can see if anything is blocking the switch? Also maybe unplug the fridge for about a minute and plug it back in and see if it changes anything with the light. It's an old trick with electronics but it might work on your fridge!

    • @TheRenderQ

      That may involve a different repair. To me it seems you have a leaky ice maker and if water continues to leak it’ll keep freezing. Sorry I’m not more help on this.

    Using a hair dryer will only temporarily fix this issue. The fill tube should not have frozen in the first place. It will freeze again because the water inlet valve is faulty and causing water to drip into the tube at a slow rate. The proper fix is to replace the water inlet valve after removing the ice from the fill tube. This applies to any refrigerator make or model. I am an an appliance tech with over 25 yrs experience and have seen this thousands of times.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for sharing your expertise on your professional repair experience! I agree there's probably a leak in the valve. This might be a temporary fix but mine has not re-frozen since I used the hair dryer. It'll probably freeze again but melting the frozen tube got the ice maker working again!

      My ice maker quit making ice. I took the water filter out for 24 hours after Whirlpool told me that may fix the problem (since I hadn’t replaced it within the last 6 months). That did not fix it. Our city water is fine so why do I need to keep buying a $50 water filter every six months. Can I just leave out a water filter? I’m going to see if the water line is frozen. Is it hard to locate the water valve? Any special tools to replace it? Thanks so much.

    • @TheRenderQ

      Hmmm? You could have a different problem with your ice maker or the waterline is frozen further back than at the end of it. Might be worth checking into!

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might have to unmount the ice maker. It’s usually secured with only a few screws and easy to put back in place. Once the ice maker is out of the way you should be able to access the water inlet tube easily.

    Be very careful when using blow dryer. It can melt the plastic inside the unit.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are correct! Some other viewers mentioned that too. Use low heat and don’t put the hair dryer too close to plastic and rubber tubing.

  • @sandraaguilar-rodriguez4631
    @sandraaguilar-rodriguez4631 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For how long did you blow hot air and how long did it take to make ice again?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the hairdryer for about 5 minutes and it was enough for the ice maker to start working again. Warm heat is enough to do the job. There was another commenter that said they used high heat and just set their hairdryer blowing on the tube for awhile. He melted the water supply tube. But I’ve had to do this twice and worked both times. Just watch the heat. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

    what happens that if the ice making is not refilling the water?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might have a water tube that is frozen elsewhere. But the frozen tube in my video was preventing water from going into the ice maker and thus no ice. See if you can follow the water line and check if there's water frozen in the tube.

    • @KK201358
      @KK201358 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, i already fixed it. Because the refill plastic tube has been frozen, i used towel with hot water to unfrozen it, and took a long ice cube from the tube.
      Its working perfectly now, thanks for your tutorial video.

      Absolutely Zero ice maker takes forever to make solid ice and more than 24 hrs. to dump very small cubes. I adjusted to -8 degrees (fast freeze) but still takes 24 - 48+ to freeze the water completely.

    • @TheRenderQ

      Clout Emperor I wouldn’t use hot water since you’re introducing more water that can freeze very soon after it’s in the freezer. The hair
      dryer is the best thing to use. If you don’t have one can you borrow one from someone?

    I have to ask though, why would this water freeze this way? This machine is designed to operate in sub freezing temps.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question! I think the ice forms because there may be a slow drip coming from the water supply line. Similar to how water sometimes drips from the water dispenser after you fill a glass. A slow drip over time accumulates as ice in the tube. Just about 2 months ago I had to do the hair dryer trick again. About 2-3 minutes of heat and my ice maker was working again. This doesn’t happen often but for many people they don’t know this simple fix and end up calling a repairman.

      As long as the problem was a frozen water line that was defrosted by the hairdryer and you have the ice maker turned on you should have ice in a few hours.

    • @TheRenderQ

      Sorry you're having issues with the ice maker. Your problem seems more than just a frozen water line. I think the ice maker has heating element in it to loosen the ice cubes so they fall out. You could probably order a new ice maker and install it yourself. I just took an ice maker out of a friend's fridge recently and reinstalled it and it was pretty easy to do. It's just held in by a few screws and you'll have to unplug the wiring connector. But of course every fridge is different.
