      @@mellol1628 Yeah that's probably true. Still the added time for the certifications are completely worth it. The mount of money you save getting the certs through school is really nice. I can see someone not choosing that option if they already had A+, Network+, and Security+ though. I'm currently in the IT program, but I'm not really looking at accelerating like he mentioned in the video. I'm completely new to IT with no experience at all, so I think actually learning the material is more important than trying to rush through. Im right at a month in and have only completed introduction to IT and A+ 1001. I also have quite a lot of credits that transfered which also helped.

    IT is IT. CS is CS.....if you want to do IT, then do IT. You will not progress faster in a BSCS program without some prior coding experience (even if it's just dabbling) and the ability to pick up advanced mathematical concepts quickly. It is possible to complete the BSIT in any concentration at WGU without prior experience much faster, plus you get updated certifications. One will probably gain employment faster, albeit, there are many more applicants for IT positions vs coding. If one needs to get to the 💰 now, go IT, then jump back into coding. If you really really want to code and get a BSCS, then be willing to bite the cheese for a year or two.

    Computer Science is rather difficult when it comes to the math part. My wife got a BS in CS at Temple and most of the class and a few of her friends dropped out and switched over to a Batchelor of Arts. It was worth it in the end since she is a Software Engineer now but it was a bit brutal.

    Hey Josh, great video as always!
    Quick question:
    For a Sr Security Engineer with over 5 years experience in the field looking to work their way to CISO level. Do you think getting a BSIT and then a MSCSIA at WGU is a good route? Or would a BSCSIA + MSCSIA be more effective?
    I’m considering the opportunity cost, and overall employability model you speak of.
    The reason is because they already have an Associates in IT and are able to transfer more credits to the BSIT and complete it faster. I would love to get your take as I draw great value from your videos.

    Last term I enrolled in WGU’s Software Development program and I love it for the most part. It’s technically considered an IT degree but I want to be a Software Developer which doesn’t have much to do with hardware and networks.
    Initially I was torn between getting a Computer Science degree and a Software Development degree because CS still seems to be the industry standard for programmers but Software Development is very specific to what I want to do. I completed 31 CUs in my first term but I had planned to complete nearly twice as much. I’m proud of what I accomplished but I got stuck on the certs!!! I failed CompTIA A+ exam... twice😡. This really slowed down my progress. I could’ve passed several more classes with the time I used up on studying for that one class. I am able to pass classes with no certification exams in a week or two but I had to humble myself a bit when facing the cert exams. The most frustrating part is that the A+ exam is all about IT concepts that an average programmer will NEVER need to know to do their job so it feels like a huge waste of time. The alternative is switching to CS but I don’t think I’ll get done with my degree any faster taking that route either because I would just be swapping out the IT certs for extra math classes. I’m gonna stick with Software Development but I had to take an incomplete in the class requiring CompTIA A+ for now so that i can move forward with my other classes. I’ll have to pass it eventually tho.

      Hey, thanks so much for watching and sharing. I'm actually going to make my next video on CS vs SD lol. I'm sorry to hear about A+, those external third-party exams can seriously take a lot of time. Can I ask, how are you studying for it? I tend to try to get a LOT of practice questions and do those. I would recommend like 1000 questions for both 220-1001 and 220-1002. Maybe look on quizlet and just do as many as you can.

    • @katrinastallworth5996
      @katrinastallworth5996 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoshMadakor Thanks for the tips! When I took my first attempt at the A+ exam I wasn’t very confident going in but I still scored very close to passing. I waited about a month before retaking it. I felt more confident going in on the second round but I ended up scoring even lower than I did on my first attempt🤦🏿‍♀️. In part this was due to me running out of time and having to leave some questions unanswered. I tried to make sure I was thoroughly reading each question since the details can trip you up but 90 questions in 90 minutes is a little nerve-wrecking. For my studying I used WGU’s course “IT Foundations” as my primary source but supplemented with “Professor Messer’s” TH-cam content. I completely agree that practice tests are crucial. Maybe my third try will be a charm.

    Just found your channel and I'm really enjoying it so far.
    I see on the WGU website that the only IT degree you can get into without a proper work background is the CS degree. It's says that 70% of students finish in 12 months or less versus the IT degree being about 30 months. Any reason you think this is?

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure why they think the CS degree is faster. The only way this is true is if the people taking the CS degree already have a strong background in maths/coding/algorithms. Very interesting find. Imo the cs degrees is much more conceptually difficult so I'd naturally expect it to take longer

    Hi Josh, I enjoy your content; it is very insightful and accurate. I’m trying to get a CS degree at WGU and I’m currently in Discrete Math 2. Discrete Math is harder than other classes but in my opinion, it is reasonable to say that you could pass it in less then a month. So far, Project+ was the hardest class to pass since it is a third party.The content is easy to understand but the exam is a bit challenging.
    Do you think a person with a CS degree and no work experience could get a remote programmer job? Emphasis on REMOTE 😁
    I wish you good luck on your CS degree. 😁👍

      Thanks for the insight on DM2, I'm definitely going to prepare hard for that one. As for someone with a CS degree and no experience getting a job, ABSOLUTELY. But it's going to be heavily dependent on your portfolio, so try to have your Github and portfolio super squared away by the time you start job hunting.
      I would recommend watching Clement's Video "how I got a job at google". He is a genius and you don't have to go as far as he does, but the video will give you some kind of idea of how to prep. (Type of projects for your portfolio, algorithms to study, etc.)

    Hi Josh, digging your content. Maybe you could help with some advice for my situation. I have a bachelor's in City Planning and I've only ever worked in the public sector, where I plan to stay. I hope to ultimately transfer to a dedicated IT role. My experience includes a few years of help desk/ hardware work, and currently I do work in planning, but my role is largely a database administrator and data analyst, with a dash of planning work as well. I also do GIS/mapping, web development/ webmaster and some graphic design for my department. I work closely with The IT department and our database vendor as well and handle all reporting, SQL, etc. Initially, I was considered the BS in data management, but now I'm more interested in CS, IT or cyber security to help me target more IT heavy roles in other jurisdictions. Down the road I will look into the masters in data analysis (plus a MPA outside of WGU), but which BS would you target in my situation? Is the IT plus certs or cyber security (or even data management) more applicable in my case than the CS degree? I'm not opposed to the math in the CS degree, I'm just not sure if I want to take longer and also pursue all the IT certs individually.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Thanks for watching, and your question is very complex, haha. The good thing is, you have a LOT of technical experience already in a lot of different domains. You can probably just frame your resume to be more tech heavy for whatever area you want to work and get a job right now if you wanted to.
      As for which BS you should do, I would honestly just pick the one that looks the most fun at this point. For me, the BSCSIA looks pretty fun honestly. It is security heavy and has a little bit of everything in there.: th-cam.com/video/bPVb2QgMupQ/w-d-xo.html
      If you are SUPER into networking, you might consider the BSNOS. Upside: most marketable in terms of certs. Downside: most difficult behind the CS degree: th-cam.com/video/_qZSl9PxJ4A/w-d-xo.html
      I wouldn't go for the CS degree unless you want it for a really specific reason (want to be a SWE or it's required for a graduate program you want to do). If you are into coding and just want to do development, you might consider the SWDEV degree: th-cam.com/video/Dof21TJUrxU/w-d-xo.html
      Here are a couple other videos that might help:
      Which Degree is Easiest: th-cam.com/video/HEQbB_e8UMA/w-d-xo.html
      Which Degrees have the best certs: th-cam.com/video/CMdUe5n6X9M/w-d-xo.html
      But yeah, after that big wall of text, I would just do a bit of research and pick the degree that looks like the most fun (something with certs would be nice). Anything you choose is probably going to complement your mass of experience you have really well, and experience is paramount in it/cyber/swe/tech in general!
      Best of luck!

      Hey Josh, degrees are not really required at all to work in IT, but they can help. Job posting are stupid and bad for the most part. Id recommend checking out these videos:

      If you are dead set on getting a degree, WGU BS in Cyber is one of the most marketable, but is difficult and will take a while, and the BS in IT Management is much easier, but is more basic and doesn't include any certs. Best of luck! If you reply to this thread, it'll get buried so feel free to make a new thread if you want 😊. Good luck!

      Data is kind of my weak point honestly, but I have been looking at this one a bit recently. It seems like the "easiest" cert, after the BS ITM due to the number of third part certifications it has. Overall, there is a lot of overlap between all the IT certs and I kind of feel like, if money/completion time isn't the motivating factor, people should just pick the one that looks the most fun to them. I'll probably make a video in the future kind of comparing the certs overall. Something like this (BS IT Cloud vs BS IT General): th-cam.com/video/LwynFf46TiQ/w-d-xo.html (This video is still private, but check it out if you want.)

      From the top of my head, you'll work with Python, Java, C++, and SQL. There are a bunch of videos, books, webinars, and interactive labs that you'll use to learn and practice the material.
      A lot of the classes are building some kind of project based on some specifications they give you. Some of them are fun (DS+Algos, the Capstone) and some of them are annoying (Software I and Software II), haha. The final for the SQL class is a virtual machine that you have to log into. You'll run some commands/SQL queries and use the results to answer some questions. It's pretty interesting! It was definitely challenging though, at least for me.

    I’m starting my Information Technology BS in July or August depending on how soon they process my transcript. I finished my AA and AA of AS Technical Support Emphasis 13 years ago but I am switching paths at my employer and focusing on advancing to a Application Developer or System Analyst Manager position once I have my degree and they post the job again at work. I switched to a position that will give me 2 years of cross training for both of those positions and by the time I am finished I will be perfect for moving up. Beyond what is shared with us as course material and taking the pre exam first so you know where to focus in your studies do you have any recommendations on the certification test preparation? I know I can google free practice exams but some are outdated or too easy (going off the A+ ones). If you used something beyond wgu’s material where did you go? Think you could do a little video on how they proctor exams and getting your desk ready? I know you probably think I am crazy to ask but I’m having to jump through hoops on my studying due to a teenager not leaving the main computer office/bedroom unless food is involved and my retired father sleeping in late, taking naps, and going to bed early. I don’t want to study at the kitchen table so I picked up the cheapest folding office desk and office chair I can get on Amazon and I am sandwiched between our air hockey table and treadmill in the basement so I can study early and late without issues. My desk is barely 2.5x3ft. Just curious where they need the camera facing as well as the overall process. With the shortness of my desk I am wondering if I need an extra long gooseneck for my c920s. Thank you in advance for any responses. Can’t wait to start and hope I can knock it out quickly. Just hope my 15 years of being an IT Specialist helps me sail through a good 1/3 of it.

      Hey, thanks so much for commenting and watching! I'll try to answer in-line below:
      >Beyond what is shared with us as course material and taking the pre exam first so you know where to focus in your studies do you have any recommendations on the certification test preparation?
      It really depends on the cert, I have a video titled something like "How to pass any certification". I would start there, then for your specific cert, see what other people are doing or what they recommend. But yeah, the video i referenced is a great place to start.
      >If you used something beyond wgu’s material where did you go?
      For the WGU exams, I sometimes used pre-made quizlets, for the 3rd party exams, I would often use whatever other people have recommended lol. For example, for CCNA, people will recommend boson, for CISSP, people will recommend cccure, for CompTIA, people will recommend professormesser.
      >Think you could do a little video on how they proctor exams and getting your desk ready?
      This is a good idea for a video, I will add this to the list
      Good luck with your program! And thanks again!

    Hey bro, I am consider enroll for WGU degree but I am not yet decided for which degree but computer science is better but it math is big problem for me. Can you compare software development and data management/ data analytical job prospective and future, I was think either degree but I am little concern about future because many people say we never here degree call software development. Also, nobody talk about data management/ data analytical WGU?

      I wish I could make a video about that, but I don't really know about data management. It's a super weak area of mine. TBH, you can knock out the CompSci math requirement before even registering at WGU and just transfer it in. Just study up at Khan Academy and then the calculus class at StraighterLine transfers to WGU. StraighterLine allows you to use a super dope calculator (ti cas cx 2) which makes the class relatively "easy" tbh. I'll make a video on this later, but just wanted to say. As far as the Software Dev degree, that degree looks really cool. I feel as long as you can prepare for your interview well (leetcode, algoexpert, etc) and have an OK portfolio, I feel you shouldn't have too hard of a time finding a job in a metropolitan area. Hope this helps!

    Would you recommend taking the Calculus course from Modern States

      Modern States is legit. I’ve taken 4 Clep tests through them recently. I do recommend other study materials but it’s a great foundation to start with. I’m looking to enroll in the CS program at WGU so I will take the Calculus next. Just have to brush up on my Algebra’s first.

      Do Straiterline. Do the Precalculus course if necessary, since that is the prerequisite courses for admission, and then it's your choice to do either Calculus course or do so after admission. It's better to do the course. You could also CLEP Precalculus. Going the CLEP route for Calculus or taking the exam at WGU will be more difficult, as they combine roughly 40% limits, 40% integral, and 10-20% differential Calculus (i.e. Cal I,II,and III).

    What do you think is the fastest masters degree at WGU to get? MBA? Thank you

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fastest degree is probably the MBA without CAPM cert, I forget which one it is, but the Masters in Business without certs is definitely fastest lol.

    I've noticed that if you have an associates, WGU will transfer in for courses you haven't taken - since some of those are listed under gen-eds, how many would be covered by their AAS transfer policy?

    • @mpforeverunlimited
      @mpforeverunlimited 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me all gen eds. I took java 1 and 2 and calc and those also transferred. They're pretty generous with their transfers. There were only 3 classes in the program that weren't transferable so tech I you can take like 90% of the program elsewhere, but I only transferred about 33% percent of the program.
