    Josh dude you are amazing! My step dad is a Security Admin in the air force and he talked with me a bit about going to WGU after I've worked in Sec ops the last few years as a basic operator. I wanted to increase my education and salary and reached out for help

    "ITIL is not that good". I've heard people say it's a little antiquated but you're the first to come straight out and say it's not that good. Which surprises me as it seems everyone and their brother has it on their job postings. I'm not quite there, so not taken it yet.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol I shouldn't have said it like that, sounds kinda hash. I usually measure certs for:
      A) how strong they are for HR
      B) how much practical knowledge they give you
      And IMO, ITIL is ranks kind of low in both of these categories, even though everyone puts it in their job postings. I honestly don't know why they do it. But as always, everything that comes out of my mouth is just opinion, haha 😂😎

    Were you searching jobs on indeed based on your location? Because if I type in IT management on indeed it brings up 77,510 jobs based on no specific location. Now, not all of those jobs may be related to IT but most of them looked like they were. The jobs that did show up were Management positions such as CTO, IT director, VP of IT operations.

    Hey Josh, great video as always. I've been wanting to get into IT for a while now and WGU seems awesome for me, but I'm conflicted on whether or not I should go for the IT General degree and get my CCNA later, or to complete the more difficult Net Ops degree and get it with my tuition. What do you think is a good route to take for a beginner like myself?

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hey Wyatt, great questions! Here are my thoughts:
      Prior to enrollment, I might recommend to just start studying for CCNA a little bit to see if you like it. I'd recommend (initially) getting a free trial from CBT nuggets for the CCNA course and going through as much as you can. (This course has REALLY good instructors!): www.cbtnuggets.com/it-training/cisco/ccna
      If you find that you are enjoying the curriculum, *take your time* and go ahead and pay for, and finish up the CCNA curriculum on CBT nuggets. After this is finished, cancel your CBT nuggets account and then enroll in the BS NetOps program. At this point, you'll be well primed for CCNA and you'll be able to complete it in a much shorter time-frame than if you went into the program completely new.
      Alternatively, if you find you don't really like the CCNA curriculum after trying it out with CBT nuggets, you can consider enrolling in the BSIT General. As you know, the General IT program is great if you want a more broad exposure. It's also "easier" relative to most of the other degrees and will give you some decent certs as well. Hope this helps!

      Yes, I would definitely agree with this. This will make you super strong and really well-rounded even outside of HR filtering. Of course the caveat to this is that both of those things are "hard" (for most people) and have a higher opportunity cost, but they are "best-in-slot" credentials for entering the field :)

    Josh,
    What do you think, I am debating on now either B.S. in IT or IT management. I know that the latter is easier due to not having third party certs. I’m new to IT but 12 years of management experience in the military. I do plan to get a masters. So most likely looking at a MBA in IT management vs a MS in IT management. So trying to decide what bachelors to get. What do you think is the best one for me to get starting out? I plan to try and work towards becoming an IT Manager then hopefully move to the C-Level. Or go back into the military as an officer.

      The degree itself will only ever take you so far. No matter which one it is, building self experience is what is going to make you marketable. Look at some of Josh’s videos such as the SIEM that he built using Azure sentinel and the Active Directory VM he made. Then do what he does in the videos and focus on understanding them, don’t worry about remembering exactly what’s going on. You want to understand it more than anything, then take that content make a blog or TH-cam videos link it in your resume and go for gold!

    Hey Josh, I have no experience in the IT field but I wanted to get a BS in CSIA from WGU, I was looking around and saw that a lot of jobs want the experience and a lot of them would take a CompSci anyway. Would you say CompSci is easier to get an entry level job than Cyber? Could I just get the certifications later and still do cyber work? I just want to get a degree or something that will allow me to get a job as soon as possible to pay for the other degree. I don’t know about the normal IT Bachelors but it seems like it pales in comparison to a well established degree of “Computer Science” thank you a lot and love your videos. Also, if I get CompTia A+ would I be able to just get a job while I do a degree?

    Hey josh! First off I love your videos. I am planning on starting wgu in January but I am having trouble picking the right degree for me. I am interested in cyber security but when I was 18 (15 years ago) I got in trouble with the law and was charged with a non-violent felony. So my question to you is, with your experience working in cyber security, is there any chance jobs would hire a felon even if it was 15 years ago and I haven’t gotten in any trouble since? Or would it just be in my best interest to get a degree in a different IT field. Thanks!!

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Someone asked a really similar comment recently and I answered it with this:
      _Hey Matthew, this is something I actually think about a lot. "What would I do if I were unemployable by conventional jobs?" I don't think you'll be unemployable, but there are a lot of ways to solve this problem. For example, you could train yourself up and get really good at bug bounty (for example). Then you could start a youtube channel, make it really high quality, get an audience, and then once you have a following, go into independent consulting or something, or just continue to do bug bounty and get youtube and get money from there. Also having a high quality youtube channel will kind of put your personality on display, so employers could kind of "sample" you and perhaps making them more open to hiring someone with a record. I'm not really a professional in this area, but these are just some of the thoughts that I've been having. Hope this helps. And best of luck :)_
      Also, someone else commented something really useful but it looks like they deleted the comment. They said something encouraging like, if you get a degree and improve yourself, people tend to overlook marks like this on your record, especially if it happened a long time ago. I hope this helps! Here is the original thread if you're curious (top comment): th-cam.com/video/MmCuymOC7XY/w-d-xo.html&lc=UgyoFDmMF6YRegbdS1B4AaABAg.9TmDPK5KYwZ9TpUQSGTPsJ

      Hey Jerry, haha thanks! Project+ is a really strange cert that almost nobody cares about even 10-15 years later. Some of the classes/certs at WGU _MIGHT_ be satisfied by what you've done at your current university. I would link up with an enrollment counselor at WGU and have them evaluate your transcript. They will do an eval and then give you a document that looks something like this: drive.google.com/file/d/1FZlE-3c_BmtHQG6R_SxVWjwW47EenNe4/view
      You can then clearly see what is satisfied and what else you need :)

      You might want to check with whatever company/school you are interested in to see if the WGU degrees are accepted. I would suppose they are since WGU is accredited with the NWCCU, the same body that many state schools use for accreditation. Best of luck :P

    Hi josh. I’ll be starting my computer science degree at WGU in February or March, haven’t decided yet.
    I have software 1&2, discrete math II, DS&A II, software engineering, software quality assurance, and the capstone. If I considered myself still a beginner with little to no knowledge, is it still possible to complete WGU in one term if I dedicate myself completely to doing so?
    I have time to pre study starting in December until classes start, would that help?
    I plan to have financial aid, scholarships help me dedicate time to pass classes as fast as possible.

      Possible? Yes. Painful? Also yes lol.
      _> I have time to pre study starting in December until classes start, would that help?_
      Absolutely yes. If you have ZERO experience coding, I would go through CodeWithMosh's complete Java Series, Python Series, and Data Structures and Algorithms Series (see below). Here are some affiliate links, but check around on TH-cam first, you might be able to find some equivalent for free, but I used most of these.

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Oscar, it pretty much doesn't matter as long as it's some kind of modern device with solid state storage. If I had to say, I would just get a thinkpad/ideapad with these specs
      At least 4 cores (I don't care AMD/intel if it's just for school)
      At least 8GB RAM
      Must have SSD of some sort, SATA or NVMe
      You can go "weaker" than this, but this is just what I would get. I would also make sure it supports virtualization, just in case I want to make some VMs for some reason. Hope this helps!

    Hi Josh,
    What would be ideal skills to earn in order to become a cloud engineer? does one require a lot of coding skills? I know its a good to have but im mediocre at it. Also, what would be the difference between cloud engineer vs solutions cloud architect? I am currently prepping for the comptia security+ and I am just overwhelmed with the amount of topics to remember. Networking isnt my strong suit. Any advice will be appreciated! Thank you!

    • @JoshMadakor
      @JoshMadakor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      _does one require a lot of coding skills?_
      I would at least be able to interpret code. You're probably going to have to deal with either a bunch of YAML or JSON, depending on where you work and what you work with. Being mediocre like you said is just fine.
      _Also, what would be the difference between cloud engineer vs solutions cloud architect?_
      I honestly on't really know. I'm really really bad with titles and tend to not pay attention to them. the title "engineer" gets through around too much so the meaning is muddled for me. But both of them involve designing out solutions for customers/corporations. "Cloud Engineer" could also mean support engineer, where you are providing support for outages/problems for hug companies with a lot of money.
      I will say, try to focus more on understanding all the concepts over just memorizing everything. Once you feel like you have an OK understanding of all the objectives, try to complete at least 1000 (quality) practice questions per exam and you should be good.
      Hope this helps!

      Like Josh said, programming doesn't have set standards, and certs aren't relevant for entry level work. However, if you plan to do full-stack work down the line, or see yourself working on the cloud infrastructure a lot, getting AWS/Azure certs could prove useful for some jobs. But I'd get them after you land your first job, not before. At my previous company, having Linux and command line experience was greatly valued on the want ad, and with the IT manager. A simple Linux cert wouldn't be a bad thing to pad your resume, since a lot of people just get by using Windows for everything.
