I’m really enjoying your videos. You spend just the right amount of time on each game and I appreciate the honest commentary you’re making. Hope your channel does well and looking forward to the next video.
Thanks for the feedback Dan. The format used comes after doing a bit of analysis on the videos I previously published and noticed that all videos focused on a single game would only get (on average) about 3 to 4 minutes of viewing irrespective of how long the video was. So the Round Up magazine format works best as it not only retains longer views but it actually attracts people to the current C64 scene - which is the primary objective.
Some great games this year (again) on the C64. I'll admit, i didn't vote for any of the top three as i hadn't played them. I will have to rectify that soon.
The whole purpose of this Award is to get the community interested and support new game development in the C64. This way we get more commercial grade titles to go with the public domain quality titles
Run Demon Run is a really playable game, large sprites and the feeling of progression. Digiloi looks so cool, especially as it's PETSCII. It just works so well. Loads of other cool games but these two stand out for me.
I personally, highly enjoyed (and frequently recommend) Mancave - definitively top 10 material to me (then again, I thoroughly enjoy the plot and gameplay of it, as it scratches not just the nostalgic itch, but also I find it being 'so perfectly 80s', well adapted for 2019)
Excellent choices all around. Neutron is certainly one of my top C64 favorites, as well as Le Abbey De Mort, Vegetables Deluxe and Age of Heroes. Nice job!
Thanks, appreciate the feedback. Initially i thought that 2019 was weaker than 2018 but producing this video highlighted the depth of games we received this year
@@RetroGamerNation i feel the same i think the games were a little weaker this year by comparison to 2018 but there is such amazing variety this year too some amazing new games and concepts that dice game looks great really interesting concept i don't think that has been done before ???
Alcuni dei giochi in questo video sono davvero belli, ed è incredibile come possano girare su una macchina così scarsa, almeno in termini di quantità di memoria disponibile.
These look amazing for Commodore 64 games. Even If they appeared on the Amiga unchanged I think that many people would consider them to be pretty good.
You will be amazed with how good the game plays, looks and sounds. Despite being a full commercial game, it beat out Super Mario in this poll...and for good reason
Wolfling and Abbaye des Morts, and Mario are my top picks for this year overall, I think. Hard to say which of these is more amazing, and Wolfling is getting a serious overhaul right now.
It does look good and deserves more praise than received. At times i feel that there is an anti Icon 64 sentiment that is not deserved. Trevor and team are not looking to make revolutionary games but rather they provide their own take on an established game which i quite enjoy on most occasions
I would have probably had Iceblox in this years top 20. It's a really beautiful kids game! :) Though I guess, technically it's much older? Was this a re-release then?
I love the PETSCII Digiloi graphics! It has a real "WOW" factor. The action seems really cramped, though ... maybe it could have been better with scrolling. You could do a lot of PETSCII parallax scrolling, I think.
I want to like sizzler but my playing capabilities prevent me from going back to giving it another go. I think the overall premise of the game is solid, just too hard for me.
The most impressive thing, to me, about the winner is that the programmer is a woman. There are way too few female game programmers, and even fewer female RETRO game programmers. Kudos to Sarah Jane Avory! You beat the odds (and every dude on the list)!
@@RetroGamerNation Another of my all-time favorite retro games was programmed by a woman: River-Raid. One of the smoothest scrolling games ever seen on the 2600. The arcade game "Centipede" was also programmed by a woman (Dona Bailey along with her partner Ed Logg) and that stole many rolls of quarters from me as a lad!
It's okay. The Commodore 64 has The Great Goana Sisters. Endless Forms Most Beautiful has Walk This Way in 😃 I'd like to play it, Wolfling, and Neutron.
Valid point, though the repetitiveness becomes more of an issue due to the slower speed of movement. Precinct 20 would be on a higher level if it moved around like Predator for example
I really tried liking it, especially considering that it was a sort of survivaly game, and I enjoy the genre. Buuut the pacing felt too slow, the without a manual I would not know what to do in many places. There were places where you can walk through (doorways) that weren't really discernible as such, to me. I tried to understand the layout of the places, to no avail. It felt like I was constricted to aimlessly walking about, even if it isn't. It's a problem I typically have with much older games.
I'm really impressed with Precinct 20, especially considering it was done with SEUCK...but then again, Alf has usually got the best out of that engine,
Nice video and a well deserved winner!
Still making new games for Commodores and other old school computers platforms. Game creators and gamers are just amazing.

Super-Mario on the C64! Wait 'till I tell my friends back in the 80s about this! Oh dang, I don't have a working time machine!!
how good is that music in endless forms :) the game looks so cool as well
C64 Super Mario still looks so impressive!!!
Version 1.1 released before xmas is supposed to make it run a little more smoother.
@@RetroGamerNation Yeah, I gotta try this. :)
version 1.2 is out now
I voted for NEUTRON. A very enjoyable and slick game! It deserved to win, and I'm looking forward to Avory's future games...
Thanks Alf, looking forward to your 2020 outupt...I hope you can use the feedback on Precinct 20 to make Ishtar even better.
I agree. Probably the best shmup on the C64 since 2017s Galencia.
@@theyamo7219 the current wip Soul Force i think its called is incredible to watch in the wip videos i think it will blow everyone's minds
I so wish I had these games back in the 80s ^^
Some of these look great.

Get Witchy just made me wonder if anybody has ported Cave Story to the 64? These all look so good!

great work mate
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it
No 2 looks something I would love to play.
I loved all those Activision conversions we got this year, but Chopper Command was still my favorite of the bunch
Frostbite or Crackpots for me...but they were all good.
I personally, highly enjoyed (and frequently recommend) Mancave - definitively top 10 material to me (then again, I thoroughly enjoy the plot and gameplay of it, as it scratches not just the nostalgic itch, but also I find it being 'so perfectly 80s', well adapted for 2019)
Agree totally, and I really like the graphical style
I enjoyed it because it reminded me a lot of a lot of those old 80s Activision games
Wolfling👍 It's great, it's a shame it's not longer.

Best pure shooter on the C64 since 2017's Galencia IMHO

Just shared this video :)
Thanks so much, your support is appreciated
These look amazing for Commodore 64 games. Even If they appeared on the Amiga unchanged I think that many people would consider them to be pretty good.
Happy to hear you like the look of them. For my mind 2018 was a stronger year for the C64 but 2020 looks like it will be one of the best years yet.
L'abbaye des morts looks good! I need to play that!
Well, all the games looks good!
You will be amazed with how good the game plays, looks and sounds. Despite being a full commercial game, it beat out Super Mario in this poll...and for good reason
NAUTRON made me buy C64 machine again :D
Yes, that's great to hear. Hope you try out more of the new games
I look forward to playing the Bruce Lee one. I loved the original on the C64 and I would have my brother play the sumo. :)
If you like the original then this one won't disappoint you. Enjoy!
Wolfling and Abbaye des Morts, and Mario are my top picks for this year overall, I think. Hard to say which of these is more amazing, and Wolfling is getting a serious overhaul right now.
Really looking forward to the enhanced version of wolfling.
demon sprite and the overall gfx style in run demon run are so cool

Frantic Freddie II stole a Rainbow song called "Man on the Silver Mountain".
I would have probably had Iceblox in this years top 20. It's a really beautiful kids game! :) Though I guess, technically it's much older? Was this a re-release then?
Iceblox is a lot of fun but had a digital release in 2018 and this year was just physical re-release, which was the same game except with NTSC fix
The best machine for gaming
I feel guilty looking at my Playstation and Xbox sitting in the corner covered in dust but its nice to play titles that are all about game play
@@RetroGamerNation My commodore 64, my Amiga 500 and a PC with DOS and Win 98 are enough to play 😁
Mancave would of been a brilliant budget game
It's a shame that Endless Forms and Age of Heroes didn't make it to the top 5 :(
I love the PETSCII Digiloi graphics! It has a real "WOW" factor. The action seems really cramped, though ... maybe it could have been better with scrolling. You could do a lot of PETSCII parallax scrolling, I think.
I think "Forbidden Forest" on the C64 uses a similar trick to accomplish parallax scrolling: th-cam.com/video/j86veyiIcS8/w-d-xo.html
For me, wolfling, sizzler and macabre are the favourites.
I want to like sizzler but my playing capabilities prevent me from going back to giving it another go. I think the overall premise of the game is solid, just too hard for me.

Some good feedback on Precinct 20 that Alf may want to consider for Captain Ishtar
I'm still going to buy and play that game. To support. I love the theme.
@@RetroGamerNation love the atmosphere and gritty look of the game

I love it, but what you see in that 30 sec clip pretty much shows the whole game
@@RetroGamerNation yeah it was a quick sort of compo not much time for devs to make large games
“The casual c64 gamer” lol is there such thing?
doc cosmos cool well done game developer Simon Jameson
hate those darkness games only one ive enjoyed is Switchblade from 1990 and that wasn't really darkness more of a reveal type
I'm really impressed with Precinct 20, especially considering it was done with SEUCK...but then again, Alf has usually got the best out of that engine,
Yes, Alf is one of the leading innovators using SEUCK, it will be interesting to see if he takes Eleanor Burns lead with her release of Synthia
All the same and really average. Not a patch on the true classics.
2019 was a weaker year. Fortunately 2020 is an exceptional year.
