I can't argue with the top spot at all, Wizball is a true classic that I loved as a kid, and still love to to this day!! I spent many hours, probably thousands of hours when all added up playing this with my older brother way back in the day, me playing as Cat and him playing as Wiz. Everything about it just blew me away, the mesmerizing music, the awesome sound effects, and the gradual beautiful colours that are eventually revealed on the different levels as you progress through it. To this day it still has the best guitar like solo when it's game over, and the music in the bonus levels is astounding. I would say this is probably the best two player game ever on the C64, probably followed closely by Beach Head 2 for me...a truly wonderful game that holds a lot of happy memories for me!! Some of the other games here are ace too, I remember playing Midnight Resistance on my brothers ST back in the day, and also on the Amiga, but I have never played the 64 version much at all so i'm gonna give it a go. I too used to also play Frankie a heck of a lot, and never really quite knew what was going on either, but that never used to stop me trying, and the music is breathtaking in parts, especially the part where you collect the falling flowers, that is an absolutely beautiful piece of music!! The Great Escape also used to intrigue me too, and that's another title I never really fully understood, but as I have it on the Magnificent Seven compilation, I often used to fire it up to give it a go, but I used to also find it rather boring too, the slow place just didn't quite cut it for me, but it does look good i'll give it that :-D Anyway, another great video, keep it up man!! :)
You must have had the same Christmas present as me, it also came with platoon and something else I cant remember the other title but it was movie related...
Quite a few in there I've never even played, I think it was Xmas 1988 I switched to an A500 so will fire up an emulator and check these out. Nostalgia is really high when I hear the music on some of these games! Only recently stumbled on your channel. Subscribed obviously 👍🏻

Such great memories in this video. For me Wizball, Head Over Heels, Batman the movie and Platoon are some I agree with you on. Also though Green Beret, Hypersports, Yie Ar Kung Fu would be on the list. I know they’re Imagine but I believ Ocean bought Imagine. Got confusing for my 80’s child brain.
Rambo First Blood part 2 was the first game I ever played on the c64. Summer 1990, a friends house. He had the same Hollywood Pack as you, so I got to see the rest of those games- including of course, Platoon. That, is still one of the best c64 games, be it from Ocean or any company. The sadistic level of difficulty alas, is criminal! Its amazing to imagine us at that age with the patience and perseverance to return to that. Level One- on me old black and white portable telly. It was near impossible to see the trip wires in the paths ahead. I remember how amazing it was, reaching the village- and onto the Tunnel level. Easily some of my favourite in game music ever in that outstanding level. I got my own c64 that Christmas. It was the Night Moves pack- containing Midnight Resistance, Shadow Warriors, Night Breed and Sly Spy. A stunning pack of games! Midnight Resistance blew me away. I clearly remember a school friend telling me its cheat. If you typed in "siamese" on the screen as you insert yer initials after the game, you were granted infinite lives! Thats how I finished it. Lets remember too- the classic "Ocean Loader" tunes. All time classic tunes, forever ingrained into the memory always here now online to remember and relive. I never played Navy Seals- looks good!
Great list! didn't realise Ocean released so many classics. I remember most of em, few was a bit late for me before I upgraded. I remember being disapointed when I saw The Great Escape's bland graphics but after playing for a while I discovered it was a great little game. Frankie was great too, the music in the flower room was awesome, also Platoon and Head Over Heels were top. Can't argue with Wizball at No1, spent many a hour on that one, total stand out C64 title.
Superbowl XX was actually quite an interesting football sim.. you would choose an offensive or defensive play from the playbook, then sit back and watch the play being executed based on statistical analysis of actual NFL players & teams
Fantastic video osg👍 Man I played a lot of these Ocean games. The first C64 game I played was Rambo, the first I bought for my own money was Great Escape😀 What else could be number one than Wizball amazing game👌
Wizball C64 one of the best games ever on any system . Played it last week again , and will do so many times more. Head over Heals soundtrack was one of the best .
I had my name on a list of people requesting help with Rainbow Islands in Commodore Format when I wrote in, I think it was a 1992 issue, they printed a cheat listing out for us, it was quite the list :p
I too started of will the Hollywood pack, glad u cover c64 as well as amiga, I wasnt rich enough to get a amiga and switched to console, but I had friends that had 1. Love rainbow islands big time, they could re release is on phone it would make a bomb!!
Cool list, great vid as usual. I will say though, in regards to your comment about Smash TV, I think it's actually best that it doesn't include the 2-player option. You wouldn't be able to use the two-joystick control method in that case - and decoupled aiming and movement are THE defining quality of Smash TV and Robotron. Like you said, the C64 managed to capture the arcade's gameplay, and that's in large part to this control method remaining intact. When you can only fire in the direction you're moving, Smash TV ports become little more than Berzerk or Commando-like in the gameplay area, it's simply not the same game.
For me ocean were far better on the 8 bit than the 16 bit machines.some fantastic games on here like untouchables ,which had some of the nest background graphics I'd seen. Ocean seemed to rush the 16bit ports whilst 8 bit got more polish and time So many happy memories watching and listening to this vid.keep them coming osg
I was surprised that in this list there was not a single game I have played or at least that I remember playing. Guess I missed many of the great ones. Also I probably spent more time collecting new games than actually playing them. But I found a few I loved and spent a lot of time with them. Anyway, great video! Thanks for triggering some great memories!
Need to play them mate...even if it's on emulator...I got in the rut of buying systems and games but never playing them too....games are meant to be played...half the attraction of games is the nostalgia while playing them ;-)
Yes, I agree of course. In theory. If I have too many choises I don’t know where to begin and I stick with a few I like and play those a lot. I played Shamus a lot, Montezuma’s Revenge, Boulder Dash, Galaga and a lot of the text adventures like The Hobitt and Gruds in Space. A few others I don’t recall the name of. I’m a bit tempted to get that new full size console emulator but I don’t think I have room for more stuff.
I Gotta confess now, the only C64 game I ever played was Flimbo's Quest which I loved. For whatever reason, I can't get an emulator to run on the resolution of my TV. I was more a speccy guy then went onto the Amiga. I'd love to play some of these as they have awesome music.
Cool video! Ocean released some quality games. sadly there was also some dross due to their mostly awful movie tie-ins! I just did a video a few days ago comparing the speccy, c64, amstrad and amiga versions of Head Over Heels. Love that game! I've got a similar one comparing Robocop on all of those systems too!
All of those games are excellent but Platoon is the number 1 for me. The soundtrack still gives me chills and the gameplay was way ahead of its time. One of the best games of all time. Great Upload my good man !
Some of my favorites were, camelot warriors, the dizzy games, Bangkok knights, x-out, ruff and ready, yogi bear, monty python, theres one with a flipping parralelagram but I don't know what it's called. Gauntlet, aliens was a great game very addictive. Iha karate, hypersports. I just loved the fact you got a really nice box with a the literature inside. I used to love going to beaties to by games and toys r us to stare at the never ending racks of games.
Great video. Ocean was truly awesome! My personal top 10 would look something like this: Head over Heels Wizball The Great Escape Combat School Miami Vice Rambo Short Circuit Parallax Salamander Platoon I've excluded some good Ocean games that I primarily played on the Amiga. Also, I never got to play all of Ocean's C64 games. Head over Heels and Wizball are both probably in my top 5 of C64 games, period. They were/are that special.
Yeah, loved Rambo, similar to Commando which I had. Batman (Adam West) looks great, but never had that! Never knew 64 had Smash TV, I got rid of my 64 at some point to buy more games for my NES. I do regret that, the 64 had the best Spy versus Spy version.
Great list and it's hard to argue with the placements too, Ocean's conversion of Donkey Kong deserves a mention I reckon, only the CPC just about version beats it as the best 8-bit conversion because it uses the correct aspect ratio, whereas the C64 version is slightly off
TBH I never liked Wizball much as a kid, but that's only because I didn't know what the fuck to do, but after playing years later, it's one of my favourite C64 games and I still play it to this day
You should also make a video of the worst Ocean games since there were some real stinkers :D Miami Vice of course. And a game called Double Take, I played it only because I liked the music.
@@colinswinbourn117 I never liked op wolf on the c64 it could have been much better...same with the batmobile and batwing stages...I find them tedious and boring especially compared to the Amiga
I played Wizball TO DEATH when I got a C64 - There is just something about that game that just transports me into it & looking at it now it's lost none of its charm
@@oldstylegaming I wish commodore did a better job of promoting their best games for the platform. Some c 64 games can look like a first gen zx81 game while others like a late gen Nintendo 8 bit game. I think they could've gone toe to toe if they'd tried
NES was an out ad out gaming juggernaut though but the C64 had some great titles and the ability to develop your own games with the keyboard....oh and the best sound chip of all 8bits
Platoon on the C64 was a great game indeed. I found a glitch near the beginning of the game that allowed you to rack up so many points it maxed out the score in under an hour, if I remember correctly. It happened by timing a jump over one of the pits, possibly involving an enemy. Unfortunately it's been over 30 years and I don't have any other details. Maybe you can find if you haven't already. EDIT I just watched your play through video and realized it must have been one of the trip wires. I only remember having to jump over something and the bridge was nearby.
I remember playing the great escape on Spectrum, the C64 version looks like a straight port almost. You can get Head over heels on PC I've got it on a drive somewhere. I cannot believe how to be a complete bastard is not on the list :P
I never cared much for Ocean Software licensed games and hardly agree with the praise they are getting by a few European youtubers. But their Graftgold developed conversion of Rainbow Island is my favourite C64 game ever. In my humble opinion, as far as playability is concerned it is the best version of the game, it even beats the original.
I grew up with Hunchback. I love Ocean’s C64 version, which I found to be much better than the arcade version, even though the arcade game had some extra “endgame” screens.
The problem with the arcade version was that it was ridiculously hard. The C64 version is a better overall game due to it being slightly more forgiving
Whenever I completed Rambo on the ZX Spectrum it had a bug that crashed the speccy! To this day I have never seen the end screen - does the C64 version end correctly!
High Noon was pretty good. Didn't look good, but nice music and highly addictive gameplay. But Wizball was of course by far Ocean's best game they ever did.
I loved Batman: The Caped Crusader I was really impressed with the comic book style presentation with having your previous few areas explored still in the background. I think Ocean got a bad reputation in later years at times for no reason because overall their selection of software was some of the best on the system and they also kept going late into the lifespan of the system. It's kind of a shame that most British publishers from that era are all gone with the exception of Codmasters. Okay technically they still exist as part of Namco Bandai but only for distribution purposes and now any kind of software development.
@@oldstylegaming I did honestly forget about them but then in all honesty their output these days is minimal at best. I'll be honest I am surprised they make enough money from the games they have released this past decade to actually still be going. So I would actually disagree they are still awesome because you have to make new games for that to happen, but that is just what I think.
@@oldstylegaming what new games do they have in development as outside of one coming out called Home Sheep Home I'm not aware of anything and that game to me doesn't look all too great. Not disagreeing with you just not aware of anything all that interesting they have in development.
@@oldstylegaming My bad, you were only reviewing Ocean games. I don't commit 100% on these videos, cause most of the time I am at work and I just skip some parts :)
It wasn't until the internet-era that I heard about Robocop being unfinished - Did they mention it in *any* of the magazines at the time? Seem to remember it getting near universal praise which seems odd given the situation. Wondering if there were any walkthroughs back in the day that explain how you're meant to get through *that* level. Has there been any interviews from the coders confirming what happened ?
I'm really not sure on that...I'm sure I made it to the glitch level 7 back when I was a kid do there must have been something in a magazine or something that told me how to glitch through the wall on the warehouse stage
@@oldstylegaming IIRC you do a funky shuffle to clip through a wall bypassing a lot of the level so is actually possible in the time limit. I'm just surprised Zzap never mentioned about its 'unfinishedness'
In my opinion Head over heels is not the "best isometric game on the 8 bits". The Last Ninja series is also isometric and for me it's the top of the list of isometric games.
Robocop should be last, no matter what the quality of the actual game. At least Rambo is a complete game. To make an impossible level because the game is unfinished is outrageous.
No Match Day 2? Ok, I'll admit the gameplay's slow as treacle on a real C64, but play it speeded up on an emulator & it's one of the best little football games you'll ever play.
Obvs from England I love matchday 2 but I'm not 100 % sure it's better than these games now ...but that's just opinion everyone has different favourites
I'm actually on with imagine software now...I decided to split ocean and imagine up as some great games may not have made it ....so yie ar kung fu may be in that one... ;-)

I played Wizball TO DEATH when I got a C64 - There is just something about that game that just transports me into it & looking at it now it's lost none of its charm
Wow, 107? There are entire consoles with fewer releases.
i know its a massive catalogue
@@oldstylegaming I wish commodore did a better job of promoting their best games for the platform. Some c 64 games can look like a first gen zx81 game while others like a late gen Nintendo 8 bit game. I think they could've gone toe to toe if they'd tried
NES was an out ad out gaming juggernaut though but the C64 had some great titles and the ability to develop your own games with the keyboard....oh and the best sound chip of all 8bits
Platoon on the c64 was the best version.
true that mate
Platoon on the C64 was a great game indeed. I found a glitch near the beginning of the game that allowed you to rack up so many points it maxed out the score in under an hour, if I remember correctly. It happened by timing a jump over one of the pits, possibly involving an enemy. Unfortunately it's been over 30 years and I don't have any other details. Maybe you can find if you haven't already.
EDIT
I just watched your play through video and realized it must have been one of the trip wires. I only remember having to jump over something and the bridge was nearby.
To be honest, I only cared for the first two levels. Wasn't too big on the levels that followed the tunnels
Flimbo's Quest is my favourite
And Friendish Freddy's too.
😃
Cabal awesome game played it for many hours, remember getting it from toys r us
I remember playing the great escape on Spectrum, the C64 version looks like a straight port almost. You can get Head over heels on PC I've got it on a drive somewhere. I cannot believe how to be a complete bastard is not on the list :P
Other C64 games with superb or fitting soundtrack/music:
- Commando
- Bruce Lee
- Miami Vice
- Elite (docking music)
The ocean loaders were also amazing!
Especially the first two
I never cared much for Ocean Software licensed games and hardly agree with the praise they are getting by a few European youtubers. But their Graftgold developed conversion of Rainbow Island is my favourite C64 game ever. In my humble opinion, as far as playability is concerned it is the best version of the game, it even beats the original.
never really played wizball, must give that a proper look.
Thanks for the upload. Couldn't agree more on Wizball. Truly original masterpiece. BTW, where in Old Blighty do people talk like you do?
North East England ...Durham
@@oldstylegaming I was guessing Newcastle. Not bad for a Dane trying to better comprehend the Queen's english. Keep the great vids coming!
@@BroqHans haha
I grew up with Hunchback. I love Ocean’s C64 version, which I found to be much better than the arcade version, even though the arcade game had some extra “endgame” screens.
I love hunchback on vic20
The problem with the arcade version was that it was ridiculously hard. The C64 version is a better overall game due to it being slightly more forgiving
Love the accent, I'm guessing Washington? Love the vid too btw. I still have my C64.
Nearly...Houghton :-)
Never heard of a tank game described as submerversive before ;)
Was the SID chip as scratchy as some of this sounds? Bad emulation?
Submersive as in being in the game...vr like. And no emulation will ever March the true sid sound mate
@@oldstylegaming Lol, that would be immersive, submersive is what submarines do mate!
Whenever I completed Rambo on the ZX Spectrum it had a bug that crashed the speccy!
To this day I have never seen the end screen - does the C64 version end correctly!
I have a playthrough on my channel (all 4 mins that it took to complete ) and the end screen is a letdown
I got the Hollywood Nights pack too with my C64 ♥️
that was my best xmas ever...ill never forget it
@@oldstylegaming even Miami Vice - found it hilarious how fast it ZOOMED off and veered into walls and corners
Yeah that was a bad game...it's like they thought lets build a game using the controls from the last v8 lol still though I played it
loved Hudson hawk
great calls here
High Noon was pretty good.
Dont forget System 3 mate they are still here and still awesome
@@oldstylegaming I did honestly forget about them but then in all honesty their output these days is minimal at best. I'll be honest I am surprised they make enough money from the games they have released this past decade to actually still be going. So I would actually disagree they are still awesome because you have to make new games for that to happen, but that is just what I think.
@@freddiejohnson6137 they are making new games and so is Thalamus
@@oldstylegaming what new games do they have in development as outside of one coming out called Home Sheep Home I'm not aware of anything and that game to me doesn't look all too great. Not disagreeing with you just not aware of anything all that interesting they have in development.
@@freddiejohnson6137 they doing switch games now theres a few
So many enthusiast forget or never met Wonderboy!
Wonderboy was Activision?
@@oldstylegaming yes, sega/activision
@@oldstylegaming My bad, you were only reviewing Ocean games. I don't commit 100% on these videos, cause most of the time I am at work and I just skip some parts :)
Platoon is just class on the C64
@@mcbpete zzap obvs didn't know at first cos they scored it really high
Would've killed for a Great Escape guide back in the day
ocean was great!
Platoon and Wizball ftw!
I just realized Parallax has parallax scrolling
CJ elephant antics
I think I got Paralax as a free game with a copy of Zzap 64 magazine
The SID music would sound so much better on real hardware.. Emulation does not do it justice.
Wait..... where’s Kong Strikes Back ? 😏
didnt make my list mate...but that doesnt stop it being one of your favourites
@@oldstylegaming I think it's the carnival-style SID soundtrack that gets me🙂
I still have my Hollywood pack :)
I wish I had mine still :-(
In my opinion Head over heels is not the "best isometric game on the 8 bits". The Last Ninja series is also isometric and for me it's the top of the list of isometric games.
Sorry...you are right I think I meant issometric puzzle game .... Oh that's puzzle too....Erm Last ninja is in a class of its own really
The New Zealand Story was excellent for its time. Where is Cobra though?
Cobra was dire in the c64 ...was half decent on the spectrum though
Very nice brother😎👍subbed immediately ✅
9.99 for big box game back in the day 😘
Midnight resistance was the bomb
before watching, i'd put robocop as number 1
we have different taste in games, i hated all isometric games and i never got into wizball
we all have different tastes ...if you were to go by Lemon64 Robocop wouldnt make the top 30 though...i had to have it in though as its class
I loved playing Operation Wolf those days, but Cabal also does the trick👍 So many games, think Im also going to hookup my c64 again.
Rambo 2 took extremly long to load.
Wizball one of the greatest games ever, how come they dont make a version for modern platforms with updated graphics?
Try this, you won't be disappointed! Amazing remake for PC (haven't tried the mac version)
retrospec.sgn.net/game-links.php?link=wizball
Far out man
Renegade ? Green beret not sure if they were ocean games
Highlander was shocking and like many terrible games the loading screen was by far the best part...
Robocop should be last, no matter what the quality of the actual game. At least Rambo is a complete game. To make an impossible level because the game is unfinished is outrageous.
Its fixed now though mate
So a game based on band (frankie) beats ones based on all the movies? That's a weird turn of events
Yeah weird game that is weirdly good :-)
@@oldstylegaming it did a lot with the little it had. Seriously impressive
Combat school?
great game but ultimately too expensive as you had to buy a new joystick after playing...i still own the original game :-)
I LOVE C64 👍🥂🎩
me too mate, me too
No Match Day 2? Ok, I'll admit the gameplay's slow as treacle on a real C64, but play it speeded up on an emulator & it's one of the best little football games you'll ever play.
Obvs from England I love matchday 2 but I'm not 100 % sure it's better than these games now ...but that's just opinion everyone has different favourites
Wizzball?😂 yeah sure ok!
I suspect metal gear solid from '98 for the first level kinda copied from this rambo game (if anyone deserves too, it would be them though).
Yie Ar Kung Fu,Combat School
I'm actually on with imagine software now...I decided to split ocean and imagine up as some great games may not have made it ....so yie ar kung fu may be in that one... ;-)
Wizball was the best.
