This video is about Not a good day for the Dodge Ram 2500 2nd Gen Cummins
This video is about Crank No Start With My Dodge Ram 2500 2nd Gen Cummins
I have a FASS system on my second GEN and it was installed by certified FASS installer. It increased my miles per gallon from 9 to 17. And cured my acceleration lag. I’ve been running Cummins for decades. I’ve learned to listen to how the truck runs and if I have any issues one phone call away is my certified FASS And injection dealer one phone call away. I have learned one thing leave it to the experts they are ones schooled that keep me on the road . The old saying goes don’t ventured too far into deep water if you don’t know how to swim
Some dealers are worthless I’ve been there a few times do your research on the dealership you go to then hope they know how to Dominoes diesels I had one in Williston one time that done my tire rod ends and I already put the 3500 stuff in the front they ruined my truck it did not drive for crap after that I had it in for a diesel issue and it had a recall showed they took it on their own to do that I can tell you The fuel issue I had is tough to find I have it for other shops I finally found out the problem myself after many thousands of dollars spent it had a micro crack in the common rail believe it or not none of them could find it I unplugged the high-pressure pump that puts it to high pressure when you do that send it to high pressure mode and then I could see a small small leak
Thanks! Solved our hot start issue on our 99 Dodge Ram. We also had the fuel pump moved to the tank with a service bulletin, which started this whole problem.
Thanks for watching!
I had a no start problem with plenty of lift pump pressure to the vp44 and I eventually discovered that the return line banjo bolt is also a pressure regulator to keep the low pressure side of injection pump at 14 psi if the spring is week it will not build up 14 psi and the pump will not start the engine . $ 29 part
Thanks for the info!
Interesting wondering if I am having the same issue now where is that bonjo bolt with return line spring exactly located?
Sorry to hear about the VP44 dying, mine bit the dust a couple months back. '99 2500 with 180,000 on the dial. You got a good life out of it though! I swapped my VP out, upgraded lift pump and filter setup and she is happy as can be now. Good luck with the swap, keep the videos coming.
Thanks for watching! There is more to come. Hope you went with AirDog.
@@ChadMyers73 I did!
I hear thoroughbred diesel has good VP pumps. Run about 1200 I believe for a 2 year warranty pump.
Sounds good I’ll check them out. Thanks!
Just about all of the parts suppliers sell the individual injection pumps and you can buy directly from them injectors pumps etc. The injectors the pump the tubes all of came from industrial injection for the engine being built for my truck
Had similar issue where I thought my vp44 took a crap, without warning it wouldn't start after sitting 10 hours. Eventually it started but intermittently stalled and ran like shit. Sourced it to a degraded lift pump inlet line letting air in. Runs perfectly again 👌
Thanks for the into! Mine ended up being a bad ground. 🤷♂️
@ChadMyers73 that was next on my list
@@ChadMyers73when you fixed the ground did it work just after that
Crank no start. Changed fuel filters. Checked monkey bolt. Getting fuel to it. Take off the wires to vp and i have ground. With key on it starts at 10v then goes to 12v. Try to start the truck and it jumps to 6v. My provlem the ecm? Also. A $3k snap on scanner cant connect to my ecm
Hey, was wondering if you ever figured this out? I'm having a similar problem, fuel is good, I can jump power to the injection pump and get it to start, but with the plug on, no start, and my (cheap) scanner can only read a companion code off the PCM
I have the same issue with my 2001 3500 Cummins also. I'm going to order one tonight. I guess from what I'm seeing out there it's common. Thanks for the video 👍
Thanks for watching! I do have a link for it in the description.
Sorry to hear about the pump, I did the bd diesel 150 lift pump to make sure my vp doesn't bite it too. Wish there was a better way for vp's to be guesstimated for more when they're gone or going.
My 2nd gen unfortunately has a fass on it for now. My 3rd gen has a AIrDog on it!!!
One thing I didn't like about bd, my current, is they dont use air dog setup with piggy back fuse on ignition fuse.with wiring harness. I have a cutoff switch on mine so I connected it that way. Other big thing I did was sump kit with 1/2" lines. Draw straws are super unreliable according to a lot of research I've seen out there. Beans diesel sump kit with airdog should be great setup fuel wise though!
I’m dealing with same issue I changed my fass filter tried to bleed the system and no fuel was really coming out the injection lines is running fine before I need watched this video noticed my negative terminal was loose so gonna go ahead and put new battery terminals and see how f that helps
Yeah I clean all my grounds and put new clamps on each battery and that fixed my issue
You have done all that I've got power my VP of got fuel at the injector squirting out big time but I have no start so anybody out there can help me out man
Why VP failed? I thought aftermarket lift pumps supposed to prevent this? That's what they advertise.
That is true but the truck does have about 220000 on the clock.
@@ChadMyers73 , thank you for replying.
I'd like to know if that transistor swap the other comments are talking about work. That would be a bunch of saved $. Especially since I know you were talking about needing a steering box soon also and a good gearbox ain't cheap either.
Yeah me too I need to do some checking on that!
I have 400k on my 01 with lots of abuse and haven’t had a problem I have a fass and 100% nozzles stock injectors
Good deal!
Had this issue like one years ago and was the lift pump. Is a truck that never move so I started engine every month and start like just showing the key, but now, after a few months, nothing. My doubt is the lift pump is almost new, mean maybe just work for less than 60 hours, can get broke so fast? IS after market of course because OEM is a crap. But when I open the injectors 6, 5, 4 and 3 fuel come a little bit, If not enough pressure there the engine doesn't start??
My truck won't start after replacing all the orings gaskets near fuel filter,..
I have 17 psi by the vp44, pressure in the injectors, probably dead ECM?? But it was working so I don't know, I try to bleed the system by lossing the Diesel lines but no luck.. HELP thanks
I didn't know a vacuum pump would causing no start issue🤪 VP vacuum pump
My diesel won't start iam getting a little bit of fuel Spitting out of my lines can't figure it out ran great I shut it down for four weeks to change a push rod cover now just having problems bleeding it need help anyone have and idea whats wrong thanks
I have same problem what did you do to fix it
I have same issue, turning and no starting . I left it running in November and went for a couple months trip to Europe . Then winter was a cold one so I used a couple of my other cars . But I need my truck for my RV and I am not a car mechanic . I wonder what it is still haven't fixed it .
Mine ended up being a grounding issue also changed out my battery cable clamps and never had another problem
@@ChadMyers73I’m dealing with same problem I change my fass filter prime the system and tried to bleed the lines very lil fuel came out it was working fine before I changed the filters
Very informative but a lot of guys don't know terminology like what is a VP?? A lot of videos will lose terminology not everyone knows a lot of guys don't work on diesels everyday
👍
Hey chad I was wondering if you can give me some pointers 3rd gen cummins swapped engines crank no start getting fuel to hpp and to the rail don’t have anyway to test rail pressure yet I’m getting fuel out of the pressure relief and have switch it for some I have here “used” two engines I tryed them out of ran less then a month ago wondering if your suspose to get fuel out of there thinking maybe a wiring issue let me know what you think I should check for my next steps thanks love the videos keep them up later !
Thank for watching! On that I would have to do some digging myself not real sure.
My truck is doing this. Except 5, and 6 squirt like they should. Injector #1 drips somewhat. All other Injectors are "dead" or barley drip.
Bad VP??? ECM?????
That sounds like a froze pump so yes more than likely its a bad VP.
@@ChadMyers73 Ever took em apart and seen what went wrong and maybe a fix internally? I've heard there is a diaphragm that cracks and cause some injectors to bleed across each other. for instance what i have going on. But i also have the code for ecm processor failure. reason for thinking ecm. Just have option vp44 for $1500 Or Option ECM for $1500. Just trying to get it right.
@@skeetercoppock4417 You can always unplug your vp and hot wire it. Blue chip diesels sheets will walk you through how to do it.
@@skeetercoppock4417 No I've never taken them apart I leave that for the professionals
Did you run 2 stroke in the fuel when you filled up or any additives? B2-B20 at all or just #2 diesel?
I only use Hot Shots Secret.
I'm not sure the lubricity properties of that product but thinking about it now I don't think it's a mechanical issue. If it is a dead vp44, I'd try to replace that transistor. If it was a mechanical issue it would have a hard time revving up or you'd get a dead pedal I believe. That transistor is only a few dollars online and would definitely beat the price of a pump replacement. Thats what I'm gonna do with mine if I ever have a problem with the electronics.
They make a great product website and coupon code is always at the top of my descriptions
Bummer man. The VP44 on my second gen is on it's way out. It runs like a dog for about the first few miles and then it wakes up. After that it accelerates just fine. I'm leaning g towards the computer module on top from what I read on blue chip.
And just replace that?
@@ChadMyers73 from what I read, you cant replace the computer box on top. I could be mistaken though.
@@bayouboattrash Its definitely something I'll look into....
I I remember correctly, I found that info on blue chip diesel .com you can also find info on mopar man 79, or is it 72. It's one of those. Lol
@@bayouboattrash there is a transistor on the top there that you can replace. All you have to do is solder in a new on. You replace it with a IRLR2905 transistor.
Sorry about your VP buddy.
Thank man it is what it is...
I have a 99 24 valve, it’s got 130k miles on it. I did a fass titanium 165 lift pump and a edge tuner with the display. It’s been running fine for about 6 months. My fuel gauge doesn’t work and my little brother used my truck to tow his car to a shop and didn’t fuel it up so I thought I ran out of diesel. Put diesel in it and it started. Now it just cranks but doesn’t start every now and then. When it’s cold it usually starts up fine. When it’s warm it just cranks. Sprayed a little starter fluid in it and it starts up. Idle is fine and so is the power. Was just wondering if the vp44 on it is starting to go. Thanks your videos are very helpful
Welcome thanks for watching! It sounds that way but without being to do a proper diagnosis Not 100%
Chad Myers73 I’ve got a fuel sensor right before the vp44. It’s at 19 psi. I’ll do what you did in the video and go from there. I’ll get back to ya on that. Probably gonna have more questions
Crack the fuel line going into the vp to make sure you have fuel
Mine is having the same issue cold starts fine but cranks a while before starting when it's warmed up, has full power and runs fine after its started, did you ever find out what was wrong
@@beaugibson2951 I just ended up replacing the pump, works good now no problems since
so was it the vp44 ??
Injection pump
Fuck an a the more I learn and spend and cuss and punch my dodge sure glad I have a Toyota 4 banger. Not a problem in years and I drive the piss out of it.
I have a code of p0230 is that my vp44
No that’s a lift pump code
@@ChadMyers73 thanks man
The starter went out the other day 🤣
And my tps went out to
Starting to hate my truck
Mine died at 186k, ended up ppumping it! never will I ever have another vp truck.
Trust me I’ve already been Contemplating it. Thanks for watching!
There’s pro’s and con’s to every Gen, the answer is not never, you have to know what’s going on and DIY and have backups
I just replaced my VP at 155k ugh... Do you have a performance chip?
I’m just about to throw an aftermarket lift pump in. Did this happen after you already had aftermarket or is that the factory lift pump?
Did you have any codes pop up
Yes 8 of them as I remember it came down to a bad ground.
I currently have a P1689 code
Yeah that’s a no communication ecm and pump. Could be a bad pump, ecm, wiring harness
Ive got the same problem but my codes a P1693? Any idea? Would be helpful thanks
#2001-2500
@@freddyguerrapor P1693 is companion code. There should be other codes with it.
Any CEL codes ?
Yeah I had the pcm and ecm codes in one of the videos.
Chad Myers73 but keep in mind sometimes a code is just getting blamed. I have a back up pair of ECM and PCU, most likely it’s ECM and what actually happens is the pad that holds the processor to the main board becomes detached, so your ECM can become intermittent. The pad is baked on to the motherboard in mastic, so cannot be repaired. If you want to keep your truck running, you’ll carry a spare pair of modules along with a flashlight and the tools to do a quick swap that you’ve practiced, so if it happens in the road you’ll be rolling with 30 minutes. Also with the injector supply flare lines, always first de-torque the hold hold down bolts, take any tension off, then torque the flared fittings, then re-torque the hold downs, otherwise they fight each other. You need to know your ECM and PCU part numbers and I can tell you a bit more info which are better and compatible. In 2001 did away with the crank sensor.
Chris Kahlson I was a bad ground. The amount of codes I had usually leads to a bad ground
Chad Myers73 no start was bad ground to VP44 ?
You should do an entire grounding video, that would really be helpful
Messaged you on the gram about VP44
Yes I did get it thanks and I have saw that before. Thanks again!
