The Cranes are one of the most misunderstood bands from that era. I love that it's a brother and sister act. They have deep lyrics: pain, frustation, and good old-fashion "goth" melancholy.
@@fomorians The Cranes have always rejected any form of "classification" or "labeling" which critic's and people in general, have been trying to squeeze this fantastic group into, but, I personally like their defiance. It's proof to me that the Cranes have the resilience and true character to endure, while still pushing ahead. The heart of problem has been what cruel people have said about Alison Shaw's vocals. People have said, "Shaw is a little girl sing in a tin-can"; " ... the helium tones of a small child"; "... baby doll voicing ..."; "the Cranes are like listening to your old elementary school teacher, scratching the chalk-board with her nails" and the list of insulting comments are endless. Look at what Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins went through -- well, she's got the last laugh now. I remember, when I was friends with a Goth band trying to make their splash onto the scene. Two sisters of a wealthy father in Hollywood, living with Daddy in his house, literally, overlooking Hollywood's walk of fame. Money with the right connections are not enough: You must have talent -- first and foremost. One day, I offered to driving all of us in my brand new car to attend the Coachella Music Festival. The CD changer was on random selection mode, when this particular Cranes song played. Both of these sister's threw a tantrum, screaming in my ears; "this is not music", "I can't f_cking stand it", "you obviously don't have the f_cking trained 'ear', to recognize 'true talent' when you f_cking hear it", and finally "Change this god-damn music and don't switch it to those shitty-ass 'no' talented Cocteau Twins either...!!!" That was it. I couldn't take it anymore, as I think flames shot out of my ears. I immediately took the nearest off-ramp to a Taco Bell parking lot. I shouted, "You two, have been trying to become famous for eighteen years. Daddy can't buy your way into everything. People recognize the Cranes, that alone is what makes them better than you two, so, get out" --- I drove off and left them behind. If other people don't like my music, I say that's just to bad. That's what I'm talking about, when I say the Cranes are misunderstood by music critic's and even by Goth people. I always tell people: "Good music, is just, Good music" If others can't hear the layers upon layers of those, deep Spanish-guitars, underscored from those intensive e-guitars, that floating rhythmic rattling in conjunction with the base, and finally Alison's vocals. While sometimes sharp, her voice pillows on top of everything else which means, it's unmistakably balanced. I don't intend to be rude, but unfortunately the "average" listener, who's ears are tuned to hear -- Rap, R & B, Country, or, just plain old Pop-culture music, well to me that's like driving a 1986 Chevy Pick-up truck on Germany's Autobahn.
@@spinglasshydra Bless you. I commented on something you wrote 9 years ago, and you gave me so much more than I could ever expect. You're amazing, and as far as the personal anecdote is concerned, I am totally on your side. I only recently got into Cranes, but I find their music refreshing and dreamy, and I honestly like the vocals, both eerie and angelic. It's interesting how violently some people react when they can't put a label on it. Be aware that there are many "fake" Goths, who are just riding the mainstream bandwagon, seeing it as a specific aesthetic and style, kind of like the abomination that is "soft grunge". The Cure didn't like being labelled as Goth either, but it helped them market their band a lot. Thank you so much for taking the time (even after nine years) to write back. Long live the Cranes 😊
@@fomorians Absolutely, no worries my dear. I don't mind explaining things when people, just want to learn more about Goth groups -- new and old. I was teaching and still do, at a well known university, when the entire Emo-kid thing started happening. Most people, thought they were Goth at first just by judging some of the clothing, it's the black clothes, I'm sure. Then, they started claiming "real" Goth music as their own, which, started a clash between the two subcultures. Essentially, they got the hint and then "skr-emo" started, which isn't bad, at all, like Sunny Day Real Estate or She Wants Revenge. New Goth bands I like are TR/ST, Crystal Castles, Beach House, and Lebanon Hanover. The goth imitators are now trending and everyone yearns to be "sad" or "depressed" and wear black. Way back in the formative years of the Goth subculture, we would classify those people as "posers". I can tell it's trending right now, probably because of the pandemic. I'm treating, many of my patients, just, for the problems associated with being confined in the house. Anyhow, I can "profile" people by their comments here on TH-cam. The facts are screwed up and they get seriously angry, when I give the real facts. One thing, I look for, is, when people heavily use the term "post-punk" and they don't know how to explain it clearly. People, literally, have copied and pasted information right off internet sites. Believe it or not; but, people have a particular writing pathology -- It's just like a fingerprint and even when they switch accounts, I can still call them out. Yeah, they hate it; but, their "posers". As a university instructor, when, I became more established I had special speakers installed in my lecture hall, along with the audio/visual system that kept breaking down, just so I could listen to "my" music; while, I'm reading and grading papers on my laptop in between classes, because, I hate my office. The walls are concrete, so, nobody can hear it, except for the one time, a student propped the doors open and I didn't know. It didn't take very long before a group of Millennial-Goth students came in and ask what music, I was playing? It was an old, Love & Rockets song. However, I have much harder, profanity laden, considerably more demonic sounding music, like EBM/Industrial, Rivet-Head, Light-Industrial, Cold-wave, Cyber-Goth, Synth Dark-Wave, and even Electro-Punk bands in my repertoire. It's been an interesting experience. During lunch break, anyone may come in and listen, as long as, they don't report me -- especially, with the harder music. I'm popular for whatever, reasons; perhaps, it's because I still look like I'm 30 years old, maybe it might be my classic car a black a "1957 Mark VIII Jaguar", or that I still dress in all black, along with my silver jewelry -- including, the first Goth ring of the "Ankh" that my mother bought me, when I turned 15 years old. The next year she asking me, if, I wanted to get my ears pierced -- so, that was my Christmas gift. My hair is still long and swished to one side, but only the very front of my hair is white - people think I have it bleached when it's really my genetics. I've had completely unknown strangers/students call me, "Gucci in Black" -- I guess that's good? You're completely right about the Cranes. I dislike it when the music industry, has this obsession for categorization or labeling bands; Nevertheless, the Cranes are revered as "Goth Royalty". When you said they were "eerie, angelic, and dreamy" that's is a perfect way to explain them. They've been classified as apart of the "Shoegaze" and "Dream-pop" movement, create first by the Cocteau Twins. Please feel free to go to my TH-cam Homepage too browse and listen to anything, I've placed in my various playlists. If you have any questions or need recommendations feel free to ask me. I literally just watched that movie a few nights ago after finding it on netflix, saw it when i was younger but had to find this song. Great movie. Great Song.
1994, not 1996, actually. The single charted at No. 57 in the UK singles chart in September 1994. It was the lead single from the LP 'Loved', which was released around the same month, as I remember because I'd bought it on vinyl within a month of release.
Brilliant music by brilliant musicians. That this does not have 10 mil views (and some of the shit that does have 10 mil, has 10 mil), is a crime against humanity and nature. Gawd Bless the Cranes. They are Loved.
The Christina Applegate movie Kiss of Fire is how I first found out about this song. Years later I saw it playing in the background in Eye for an Eye. Both great movies.
@@PsychologicalApparition The lead singer of CRANES was Alison Shaw, she formed the band with her brother. she also plays bass and acoustic guitars.... Joanna Newsome.... She's alright! then I'm fussy with female vocalists these days tho saying that, Her first single or two were good as was debut album! What done me is her voice started to get more exaggerated, more child like which became to grating tho her songwriting is pretty good!

I was lucky to enjoy them in the first 90's and in the first decade of this century, saw them lots of time in live and always they were brilliant. When they were playin in a small venue as when they were playing in a big venue (like the firs time in Wish tour supporting The Cure)

The Christina Applegate movie Kiss of Fire is how I first found out about this song. Years later I saw it playing in the background in Eye for an Eye. Both great movies.
I love the dark edginess in this song. It definitely suits my gothy tendencies!
this lady has one of the sweetest voices ever, only Grimes comes close.
Ahem* Joanna Newsom. Check out the Sprout and the Bean! Adorable cross between a child and an elderly lady 🖤♥️
@@mattjammy9884 I honestly hadn’t listened beyond the debut 😎
@@PsychologicalApparition Same!
Im taking their tunes to heaven with me and show God, he will resurrect them to play before all holy angels
If I get there before you, I will
Magnifica canzone e meraviglioso il video.

This is extremely, extremely beautiful!
I've been a fan of Cranes for 20 years, but it's only recently I discovered they actually had music videos!
This was in that movie, an eye for an eye.
I didn’t know of them until I watched Eye for an Eye.
Eye for an eye soundtrack. #goodsong and #goodmovie
her voice just hits different
Great band. She has an unique tone of voice. The best of post-punk goth music with a Girl singing
reminds me a lot of Mars Argo's voice. I only say she reminds me of her because I found mars 1st.
I saw them at The Met Cafe with Pale Saints in Providence, Rhode Island in the 90's.
Everything by Cranes is the best! 💚💙
Very cool. Thanks
Saw the Loved tour with my girl in Tempe Az. at a bar venue called Gibson’s. A most hypnotic industrial experience. This was a great night.
Something about 1:38 just scratches an itch so well
So beautiful song and voice of Alison Shaw

I have this album. It’s the only one I own by them, but it’s definitely one album. I would never give away.
She is so beautiful, rille cool video. I saw the movie Eye for an Eye like ten years ago. Still remember her in the movie on the t.v in the background. So happy i finally found the video.
I was lucky to enjoy them in the first 90's and in the first decade of this century, saw them lots of time in live and always they were brilliant. When they were playin in a small venue as when they were playing in a big venue (like the firs time in Wish tour supporting The Cure)
