I remember the 90s when I was a kid. It’s funny how some things feel dated and some remain fresh. Mazzy Star stands on a strange place where the music doesn’t feel old or irrelevant (all the contrary), but it’s not present either. It carries an ethereal feeling of visiting a place that doesn’t exist anymore but lies in our dreams as real as it was then.
Spot on. An eloquent adaptation of something soulful, which is never easy to convey in words. A little like describing a colour to someone who has been colour blind their whole life.
Your comment just successfully made me deeply sad and happy at the same time. I was 16 in 1993 and I had no clue how fortunate I was to spend the prime of my life in such an awesome sliver of time. She sings "I think it strange you never knew" Now that I'm a much older age, I know exactly what that means, but its too late to fix the past for that second chance in life. A beautiful but haunting song that is something we all can understand or relate to.
Simple one of the most moving songs ever written. And Hope is more impactful just standing there than half naked pop stars grinding on a microphone stand.
What a great live performance of the song. Just brilliant. And for once, someone did a great job micing a tambourine...it's an essential part of that song.
And to further add to your comments, this is wonderfully engineered and recorded. It's so nice to run into these gems on TH-cam. Grab a great set of IEM's or listen on a well setup stereo for best results.
@Paul Hopkins That's just Hope Sandoval and her style...do some research before replying. She's a very reluctant live performer. The fact she does at all is surprising.
@therandom3591 I doubt you've actually eaten one, but I know you've spent a lot of time considering what a Tide Pod would taste like when you first bit into it.
Fabulous band that never reached a level of fame it deserved. Hope Sandoval is mesmerizing with a crystal clear vocal style and one of the most beautiful women on earth
Yes, I often wondered why they only really had this one song that was a top hit and I came to the conclusion that Hope had such an amazing voice no one knew what to do with it including her. She was too good. She belonged in an ice castle somewhere with angels playing harps.
I consider this an anthem for us introverts! I believe Hope herself was very introverted. Growing up, I was very introverted. I had a very small circle of friends and really didn't open up to anyone. I didn't come out of my shell until well into high school and college, where I met the love of my life, who herself was also introverted. I didn't discover this song until years later. I was 10 when this song was released; I wish I had discovered it then. ❤
This song and girl reminds me of a girl from high school in El paso tx. She sold roses 🌹 in bar's and clubs in the city, she was found murdered next to a phone booth on the street Her name was Gina Hannah may she rest in Peace ✝️🙏

Hope Sandoval was 27 years old when this song was released, she’s a total babe, add to that her haunting vocals and shy stage presence omg I just melt when I hear this, and the nostalgia for my childhood is insane when I hear this song, I would give anything for a Time Machine.
My best friend died from a heart attack last september. We had just met in february, but we spent so much time together and had so many adventures that it felt like we were soulmates. Often at night we would listen to Mazzy Star's songs, before finally falling asleep after hours of telling our biggest dreams and secrets to each other. He told me once that he felt like Hope was singing only for him, and it was like she was his friend trying to soothe him by singing special lullabies. He lived with severe PSTD and depression, but he had the most precious heart. I think of him and miss him everyday. I still love him deeply, and I wish he was not gone. I know his death was no one's fault, but somehow I think deep inside he just wanted his life to end. I just want to tell him again how much he is loved by me, to see again his beautiful eyes and listen the sound of his laughter. I don't know how, but the last time I saw him I knew it would be the last. I just knew, and I wish I just have stayed....
Oh Melissa what a beautiful tribute to your friend and such precious memories xxxx this song reflects your special times xxxx be happy and warmest wishes XXX🙏💚🌈
I have lost a lot of friends and family the last 11 years. It hurts like hell, but I don't need to tell you that. What I will tell you is that they do stick around and watch over us. Not saying this to make you feel better. Saying it because it is true. I am a bit perceptive of spirits above the average. Not clairvoyant, or clairaudient, though I wish I was, but perceptive enough to recognize those pops and cracks that many put off as "house settling noises" are something more than house settling noises. Sometimes, they will play tricks and games, hiding your car keys, your watch, or some other item. You go crazy looking for the item, checking certain places multiple times and not finding it. Then, hours, minutes, maybe days later, it mysteriously appears right where you had looked many times. I hope you realize a contact from your friend, maybe many. Love doesn't end at the grave. You WILL see him again one day.
mid-90's at 'The Mint' ...tiny little lounge in south-LA ..stood 5-feet(no stage back then..ground floor)away from her and band...was one of the best shoe-gazing concerts ever...she just stood there looking down and sung!..and when she looked up you almost froze as if Medusa was casting her spell on you...she and the band were so tight, the unassuming pure energy...just captivating you to notice every little subtle note, gesture, sound and the performance was pure-subdued-magic!
You’ve got to listen with a good set of headphones. The bass is just intoxicating. Then add her voice and Lord!! Honestly this is the best version of the song out there!
This song is classic 90s for me. It has aged so well. Definitely a cult classic. Not sure they get the credit they deserve. Brilliant song. Brilliant performance

I wanna take the breath that’s true
I look to you and I see nothing
I look to you to see the truth
You live your life you go in shadows
You’ll come apart and you’ll go blind
Some kind of night into your darkness
Colors your eyes with what’s not there
Fade into you
Strange you never knew

Fade into you

I think it’s strange you never knew

A stranger light comes on slowly
A strangers heart without a home
You put your hands into your head
A million smiles cover your heart
Fade into you
Strange you never knew

Fade into you

I think it’s strange you never knew

Truly underrated comment got lyrics and tabs. You are a legend
one of the first sogs i tried learning on guitar
(^^)
Thank you❤
90s. Our youth. Invincible. Anything is possible. She's gorgeous. Nothing is impossible, even now.
30 Years later i still want to date Hope.
Hey, get in line, buddy.
Nothing is more beautiful than Hope Sandoval singing this song.
Hope’s voice is so moving. RIP Dave Roback
Yes, he knew exactly what he was doing. RIP
Kudos to the engineer who recorded, mic’d and mixed this. Fantastic.
Glad to see I wasn't the only only one to notice how superb the SQ was on this.
That's the BBC studios for you.
They're lip syncing
@@xxpatrick204xx Umm, no. Hope's wonderful, but a little pitchy and her phrasing is completely different from the record.
@@xxpatrick204xx No, Jools Holland has always insisted his shows are proper recordings; a couple of friends of mine have been sound engineers on the various JH shows over the years.
She sings "I think it strange you never knew" Now that I'm a much older age, I know exactly what that means, but its too late to fix the past for that second chance in life. A beautiful but haunting song that is something we all can understand or relate to.
Makes my heart ever so sink! I cry everytime!!!! This song never gets old..feels new everytime!!! Much love guys👍😎💗
She has a voice of an angel.
She is an angel
Fallen angel more like
Its amaxing how many people come back to this after all these years. Just gorgeous..
Ray Donovan, wonderul moment in that superb series between Abby and Ray, superb acting especially from the beautiful lady playing Abby!! ❤
Love this woman. Her voice is incredible.
I swear that her voice touches my soul.
Millions and millions of us
Simple one of the most moving songs ever written. And Hope is more impactful just standing there than half naked pop stars grinding on a microphone stand.
Right I feel like this was the peak of music that we’ll never have again ?
I have no idea how the hell I got here but absolutely LOVED THIS!! ❤️
28 years old at that, so I guess your alittle late like myself 👍🏻👍🏻🌬☠🏴☠️
I've never heard a singer that evokes so much emotion in me before. Her soul-piercing stare and timeless beauty only adds to her mystique.
@@SuperRede4u That it is for sure.
@@SuperRede4u And not just that the Tombo playing is tricky do and sing at the same time!
@@mattpalmer5123 Kinda like walking and chewing gum. Almost impossible.
@Paul Hopkins That's just Hope Sandoval and her style...do some research before replying. She's a very reluctant live performer. The fact she does at all is surprising.
Hope is a goddess
Lotus Healing
Same here.
Uncle lzzy, that's an understatement...lol
Have to say, i wouldn't kick her out of bed if she farted.....
Always found her sexy as hell.
@therandom3591 I doubt you've actually eaten one, but I know you've spent a lot of time considering what a Tide Pod would taste like when you first bit into it.
This woman disarms me. Sweetness personified...
I’m a metal head but there’s always been something so captivating about this song.
@@MikeBrown-go1pc are you cheezboy?
Hope Sandoval is mesmerizing with a crystal clear vocal style and -one of- the most beautiful -women- woman on earth
lets take a moment to thank the band for their musicianship! pretty awesome
"I want to hold the hand inside you" I've never really payed attention to that first line but wow, that is so amazing. Song writing is something else.
This song and girl reminds me of a girl from high school in El paso tx. She sold roses 🌹 in bar's and clubs in the city, she was found murdered next to a phone booth on the street
Her name was Gina Hannah may she rest in Peace ✝️🙏
Hope has a voice that just makes all the problems of the world go away. I want to hug a stranger now.
I have some of her songs in my “Soothing Songs” playlist
Youll get ronavirus
Oh noooooooo...
you'll get the Kung Flu.
here I am buddy.
Come on Chris give Lee a hug.
How can you not be in love with this song, with her, with the way she stands, the way she sings, the way she looks. Sigh!
Brian Capaloff Maybe you need to take a cold shower...
@@zoznack I'm perfectly clean thanks. Maybe you need to get a life, and a heart.
Brian Capaloff No, no. You need to take a cold one, control those adolescent hormones...
@@zoznack As I thought. A bit of a dick. Although I'm amused at why you've picked on my comment and ignored so many others here which express similar sentiments. The life of a troll, I suppose.
The lead guitar has a haunting sound that i truly like
Hope Sandoval was 27 years old when this song was released, she’s a total babe, add to that her haunting vocals and shy stage presence omg I just melt when I hear this, and the nostalgia for my childhood is insane when I hear this song, I would give anything for a Time Machine.
He knows
I am sorry for your lost, be strong and safe:(
Send all my love to you
Sorry for your loss.
1993/94 was a great year...my best summer with friends and all the river cookouts just hanging out Friday after work no work weekends
This song is classic 90s for me. It has aged so well. Definitely a cult classic. Not sure they get the credit they deserve. Brilliant song. Brilliant performance
It just happens to be knocking on heaven's door by Bob Dylan
No it's not
If this were another time, she would be the type of woman wars were fought for
Well put
A face that could launch a thousand ships.
Yes!
OMG I- HELL YEAH
Nah, she's too tomboyish.
Narrow hips, flat chest, no curves at all - and just an average face you see on the street everyday.
The more I watch live performances of this song, the more I realize that this song is perfect and Hope Sandoval is the perfect person to sing it. And the more I watch her wonderful performances, the more I fall in love with her.
I've always loved how she puts her whole soul and heart until the microphone, into her music. I will always love her.
One of the most powerful musical hymns of the 90s. Hope Sandoval makes just magic!
