One of the Best Update on the internet. I'm currently trying to decide which unit I was going to purchase and was unaware of some of the issues related to generators in general. I really like the information you have provided. I to like the ability to use my phone to control and receive information. My whole house is Zwave and I can almost control any device in my house from my phone. Thank you much. I really liked your video.
Thank you, great video, very helpful information! I just had the Generac 22KW installed a couple weeks ago. I live in eastern NC, and have numerous hurricane-related power outages. My land is 2 feet above sea level; the 1st floor of the house is about 5 feet above sea level and has flooded twice. I installed the generator up in the carport of a raised, attached shop; the generator is 12 feet above sea level. (I wish I could have gone 20'!). Now I am working on building a platform to get the propane tank as high above sea level as possible. Without the propane, the generator is useless. There is no natural gas here, and diesel is too hard to keep the fuel fresh (My last two boats had diesel engines; keeping the fuel fresh is a problem)....
Dan I hope that you will read this I decided to install based on a couple of your videos before installing my 20 KWH Generac in December 2016. IN less than a month we had a bit of a storm in January 2017 the genset ran for four hours sweet. I only knew that because my Simplisafe told me I had lost power within the same minute I got notified that I had restored power. Last August there were thunderstorms in our area here in Virginia I have mine set for exercise at 14:00 on Saturdays. It mist a run and I had not lights the leds were black. I lifted the hood etc...no display on the control board it wouldn't crank just a very expensive paper weight. I called the guy that installed it he found that both magnetos were fried, the control board was fried the T-1, T-2, T-3 fuses were toast. I asked him when he installed the 20KWH if I should get a whole house surge protector he said no it is a waste of money. He knows more about these than I do. Well we both know there is a 5 year warranty for the generator and that doesn't include the electronics they are warranted for 3 years. So L claimed this to my insurance and after paying the $250 deductible and 250 for yet the whole house surge protector it was up and running after two days for parts, etc...I ordered Mobile Link it is $299.00 and $69.00 for now a Cellular 4G LT not WiFi anymore. I agree with you since these gensets are equipped with all the sensors that they have for the components that the customer should be able to start from any where in the world . Nobody so far has complained about noise to our HOA that is why 14:00 on Saturdays seemed harmless to any complainers that might be offended by it. But people do ask me how it works I tell them when it goes dark it isn't at my house. The guy that finished installing the Mobile Link advised me to change the oil every 6 months and plugs and oil every year with Mobile One 10W 30. He advised if the generator runs for a long time the oil would be more stable I tend to agree with him but Generac advises 5W 30 like you I go by the guys in the field installing hundreds of these and not Generac. I called Generac for advise on the Mobile Link the guy wasn't any help he just asked for my zip code and told me to call the guy that came out. After all of this it was discovered that the Control Board was defective it wouldn't display so another one is on order another reason to have more perimeters with Mobile Link. I start mine with a load for about 15 minutes every 6 months off of the grid if you don't do this how are you going to know if it will light up your house unless you waste a little bit of NG that doesn't cost a whole in my neck of the woods. Ed By the way your videos are very helpful than you Dan.
@@dan8220 the best he could figure was a lightening strike somewhere close to us but that could of been 20 miles away. I knew something wasn't right I am glad I caught it but dang it was expensive now my homeowners should cover it. I wish I knew somebody to make Mobile Link do what it should be able to do.
er1073 That’s interesting. From my understanding if they are installed correctly lighting would have to strike the the unit or it’s separate electrical system. If you had a massive surge of power it go to the shortest line and fry that item, which is or should be your whole house surge protector, next to that your shortest item would be the generator transfer switch but I believe that it’s very rare that happens and cries that much stuff. You should go the link and ask some question for further clarification. Most interesting to learn more on this issue. Check out the link, these guys are the smartest around and I trust anything they tell me, in addition it’s a forum and several heads are better then one. I’m thinking it could have been a defective control board in the generator or a creature caused or from chewing wires and causing a Short. www.zillerstore.com
@@dan8220 I thought maybe a critter when I discovered that it was dead way too much money for that to happen. Now that I have the whole house surge protector I am breathing a little easier these days. What the installer thought was his theory of the shorted systems he had no proof and there weren't any storms in out vicinity. I will check out the link.
Thanks for your detailed video. I just recently purchased the same generator and had it installed a week ago. I am trying to learn about these generators and your videos help. I think the battery warmer is a great idea and wish I had one, I passed on it due to hearing about issues with them I hope gererac makes them better.
To anyone questioning the claims made about WiFi Mobile unit and app starting at 14:15 ...yes, both the Mobile Link hardware and app have undergone some changes in the last 3 years since this update video was posted. The most significant change was Generacs decision to "build-in" WifI capabilities into all of its models in their entire air cooled line up. In other words, as little as a year ago you could purchased a 22KW generator “with or without” WiFi, with a price difference of $500 between the two. However, as of June 2021 its getting increasingly difficult to hard to find a distributors that still has units in stock without WiFi. NET: Anyone buying one today will probably get a newer unit with WiFi access whether they want it or not. Case in Point: Two weeks ago I purchased their newest 24KW model. Working with a genuine factory authorized Generac dealer/distributor I told him I did not want or need Wifi capabilities. He said all new production models include it and he no longer has any older inventory of the older non-Wifi units. He then said he doubted I would be able to find one of the discontinued models anywhere in the state. Unfortunately, updated or not the Mobile App is pretty lame as mentioned in this video. As of June 2020 it still only provides you with status and required maintenance information. You still CANNOT turn it on or off via the app. In fact: You have NO Control capabilities. By comparison, I had a new HVAC unit installed two years. It came with WiFi access and the app allows me to control ALL functions of it remotely (i.e. change it from heating mode to cooling mode, adjust temperature, adjust air handler fan speed, set operating schedules etc.) FYI: Somewhere around 3rd quarter 2017 Generac revealed its new redesigned engine to be used in their Generac standby units. Earlier units, like the one in this video, and some of the last remaining new old stock inventory in warehouses... can be identified by the word "Generac" on top of the Airbox/Air Cleaner cover. Newer units now have the word "G-Force" on top of the air cleaner housing. “Supposedly” these new G-Force engines have a new piston ring design like those used in high performance automotive engines, run cooler, have decreased fuel consumption and offers 20% more power throughout its RPM range etc... and... they are manufactured in the US by Generac Power Systems Inc. at their facility in Wisconsin.
An interesting note about run time. We have a 100kw Generac at work. It runs for 30 minutes per week no load and 30 minutes every 4 weeks under load. One would think the home units would be similar. It’s diesel and water cooled and has a water heater and a fuel warmer that needs manually switched on in winter. Not a problem when the units operational functions are documented weekly. Good video and helpful for those trying to figure out their options.
yes, I agree with your posting. Diesel w/water/glycol cooled is the choice I made. Air cooled with propane or nat. gas runs too hot and very high RPMs.... I'll take a diesel genset anytime, anyplace over a gaseous model.
thanks so much. didn't know mobile link was not a smart phone scenario. that's really sad someone at generac isn't in charge of paying attention to what we want in a generators these days.
I agree with everything you said Dan. Generac should start listening to their customers. One day a Japanese company will come in and spank them just like they did the automotive companies.
Runtime 5 minutes a week? That is not enough time to heat all the oil to operating temp. Kolher 20kw in Florida summer takes at least 15 minutes to heat to 180. I have the OnCue Plus to view temp of oil and controller.
Not sure why Generac use an 8 AWG wiring from there unit back to the 200 amp transfer...Gonna check up on that...as im installing the same unit this Monday...
The “steak” was at Home Depot, it’s called strut channel. Next to the metal dowel rods and the magnetic is from harbor fright and I added the hose clap to it to keep it from slipping off, then put a knob on it to make it easier to remove for oil changes.
I'm confused? Why did you buy Generac? There is alternatives: Kohler, Champion, and Briggs. I have a Generac 24kW and mobile link Wi-Fi came with it. You have option to pay $49 for Active monitoring.
Great videos to date on your standby generator. They are much appreciated. Please do another video when you change the battery. I have a 20kW Guardian installed in 2011 and the battery is almost impossible to remove/replace. Thanks!
Rock Steady I think the trick is to pull the battery up on its side then slide it out allowing it to slide around the curves better. Tilt it toward you onto its side then pull it toward the front and it should come right out.
The magnet was just a round magnet I got at Harbor freight and the insulator I think you are talking about is the pad under the battery? That’s a silicon baking pad I cut down. I think I got it from walmart.com.
@@dan8220 - I don't need to run everything in the house. Mainly the sump pump - freezer - fridge. We're in Maryland and don't lose power long. Not sure what size would I would need. Or which options to get. thanks again.
Mote Hopper they can come in and give you an exact unit for what your wanting to run. I did the same with my 14 kw at first. There is a video that covers that unit also.
We have good group in Facebook for Generac owners & dealers. I found a good aftermarket product monitoring the generator addressing the the issues you raised in this video. th-cam.com/video/cn91Hplkl0w/w-d-xo.html
Also I forgot to add, I got the cold weather kit as far as for the oil filter. My dealer also suggested I don't get the current battery blanket that is out. I wonder if I got it and put think rubber down first and then the blanket and the battery on top of it, if that would help with a shorting out issue.
Mr Glock23 This blanket is for the liquid cooled units www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/Generac-Guardian-0A6193/p1253.html The other pad kind is for the air cooled units. www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/Generac-7101/p70535.html I’m not aware of a blanket for air cooled, but that same liquid cooled blanket can be used with a thermal cube, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006U2HD2/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_17?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2EADKR0W1QAA however there is no live 110v supply to hook it up too inside your generator, you’d have to run a feed and install an outlet. I considered doing that but opted to try the silicone pad first. I’m confident that will work. The issue was the battery pad shorting out on the metal bottom of the generator under the weight of the battery over time, not the pad shorting out against itself, so the barrier I put in between the battery and generator bottom should be significant. Rarely, very rarely have I read that batteries are blowing up anymore from them. Most of the complaints now are that they stop working and are useless. Poor quality and no longevity out of them.
Dan ok I understand thanks. Can I start the generator on my own and allow it to run longer than the 5 min? Unfortunately I was at work when they came and installed. Everything I have really learned is from watching your videos. Thanks in advance.
Mr Glock23 Oh absolutely, you can run it whenever what you want, just push the manual button on the control pad on the generator and it will start and run until you stop it. To stop it push auto and it goes back into auto standby mode, or if you want to run it under load go to your transfer switch, take off the front cover and turn that switch off, simulating an outage and it run and transfer your house to the generator until you turn the switch back on.
Hi guy - old generator man/master electrician from Alaska. We called Gererac Generjunk. On the subject of the control wires running with the power wires it's bad carma - it's legal in some jurisdictions as long as all the wire has 600 volt insulation. On the subject of the oil heater that install is pure bs - the heating pad should be put on the bottom of the crank case... ur temp sensor showed the crankcase was in the 20 degree range - that will be the oil temp that the oil pump will be trying to pick up. That battery heater system will deal you some grief - I tried to use them in the artic and nearly burned up about 20 8d batteries. As far as controlling the run time is simple - just put a 7 day timer in one of those legs where those voltage sensing fuses are - as long as you keep one of thos sensing leads open the generator thinks there is an outage. If your worried about the furnace you can get a voltage sensing timer - wire it so it senses the power coming to the furnace .. have the relay open the control circuit for 5 min when the power comes back on - it's called a delay on make timer. I hate to see you got hooked up with Generac - a kubota diesel with a lime gen end would me very good - all u have to do is order what they call a critical muffler ... good luck
JT H So far so good. I don’t have any operational complaints. This is my 2nd unit and both have operated flawlessly. I think their mobile options could be much better but other than that I’m satisfied so far. Just last week we ran 12 hours on it, no worries. Bad wind storm knocked out power.
Great series of videos on your experience with this unit. I've been looking for this kind of info. Question on the battery: How about getting the highest amount of cold cranking amps in that size battery to overcome the cold, like say around 800 instead of their standard 525 or whatever it is?
Jere616 You could get a bigger CCA if you’d like. More expensive for no reason really to have such high CCA. I’d rather have the winter heating kit to also help the oil stay warmer.
Yes, I see the value of the oil warming kit in temps like those you get and what we get here at times. Good idea about the oven Sil-Pat. I use them for baking. They can take temps up to 475.
great videos Dan, I have 22kw ,I just purchased the cold weather oil and battery pad, can you show where they connect at inside the generator if you have time.I Know it connects to n1 and n2, can I get to them if I remove that top cover only? Also what did you put under your battery pad so it wont short out..thanks
cyborg1117 Yea, remove the 4 bolts and then the steel plate will come off, there is a black cap covering the n1 and n2 connections, remove that and one plugs into the n1 and the other one on the n2. Mine has a yellow wire on each one. You have to use a screw driver to push down the top and the wire slides right in. The wire harness have a white and black wire that pigtail together to a point. Very simple plug and play.
I run mine with the house load for approx 20 to 30 minutes a month to make sure that the oil gets warmed up enough so that the oil doesn't get get watery.
Good morning Dan, I was wondering where you purchased your propane tank and how did you get it home? I have been struggling to find a new or used tank in my area. I don't want to use my current propane company anymore, they are rude and act like they own me. I will be able to use anyone I want to fill me one I accuire my own. Thanks for your help Dan.!!
Mr Glock23 I looked everywhere too. That was during the big propane shortage in 2012-14 so finding a company that would sell was impossible. I ended up finding www.hallpropaneandtanks.com/ They delivered it. Worse case if you can’t find one local plan a trip to the closest company that will sell you one an get a u-haul trailer and go get it. Or have a hauling company transport it if the distance is great. Found a couple on Craigslist also. Found on that fuel in it still bout half full down in megs count Ohio. Not legal to transport them with that fuel in them so I opted to go to Erie PA to get one, then the next day ended up finding hall propane on Craigslist, good folks! Worked out well. My 500 gallon delivered, not hooked up was $1070. I believe the had free delivery up to 50 miles or something like that and I was at 48 or so. 😎
Call the company you want to use and get them to deliver you a new tank to put their fuel in. Then call the rude people to come out and get their tank off your property.
There is no way that the wire coming from the Generac is #8 (50amps) or #10(35amps) like you said. The unit has a 100amp breaker with 75C terminals. I would have to be #3 wire.
That’s why I said “I think, can’t see the markings and looks like”. I also said to consult your local code because they trump any generac spec anyway. It says right on the panel #3 for size and also the torqued for them.
I replaced my 12kw with a brand new 2022 Generac 14kw with the newer designed engine with hydraulic lifters which I really like my old one had that 1L with non hydraulic lifters make sure you keep valves right first adjustment is first 25 hours then 300 after I wouldn't go that long 200 max I always did it warm your smart and know these machines so probably not telling you anything you don't know my house isn't very big and is very rural 14kw is plenty what I don't like about it they removed oil cooler to help prevent moisture it does hold more oil than the bigger engine far as oil stay away from car oils such as Mobil 1 because the ppm on zinc and phosphorus is very low around 700 to 800 for emission system small engine oil like Briggs and Stratton or Amsoil small engine oil have alot more zinc and phosphorus which are very important for small air cooled engines and they are 100% synthetic Mobil 1 and other big name oils are not 100% they only need so much to be labeled full synthetic on my generator I can run mine off the phone just have to check box for not responsibility for injuries or damage if someone is working on it which I understand but they have improved on some of those things I also have cold weather kit probably turn off battery warmer 540cc is plenty for a 816cc twin cylinder now the Mobile link is 49.99 for all the information its free for basic information mine also has cold weather start runs longer before transfer
My friends whole home Generac Generator running on natural gas caught fire? It only had around 1 week of continuous use during one storm here in Florida (other than the self checks)? One morning the unit tried to start to do a self test, but failed to start ... the unit however continuously tried to start and then burst into flames. Had he not been home to notice this, his home would have caught fire. Searching Generac Generator Fires, a good amount of reports of them catching fire showed up (most of the ones I seen from the search used LP/Propane). Thankfully he was home and the fire department was able to contain it before it spread to the house, if not he wouldn't have a home because of his Generac unit. My roommate and I was talking about getting one, but after this, it'll probably be a different brand, if any at all.
John Thorpe www.zillerstore.com/post/22kw-during-the-calif-power-shutdowns-10345692?pid=1309993998 This talks about generator fires a little bit. Actually catching a house on fire is very rare. It’s built to contain the fire inside the unit, not impossible to spread outside but very unlikely.
@@dan8220 not sure, but we can only guess that the starter was stuck thus overheating and the continued to feed fuel ... so fuel and the starter being a possible ignition source would be an assumption. This guess is based on that it tried to start, but didn't and instead of the unit stopping itself from trying to start and giving an error code, it continued cranking away. Like with a car that won't start how it says to crank in 10 to 15 second intervals, instead it was like you just held the key in the start position.
John Thorpe That seems a bit suspicious. It could be a bad batch if generators, but I believe that’s unlikely, with 4 fires in such a small window the core Marshall would expect generac to do some research to determine a cause and they would as well. This is the first I’ve heard of any fires, I would think if it was major problem with a batch of generators it would be all over the internet and TH-cam. That forum I sent link for would be the first place to start asking around, most of them on that forum are installers and dealers for generac units, if there’s a cause or pattern they would define be the first to know about any bulletins. They install all over USA. It would be beneficial to get a trend started with then to see what their experiences or thoughts would be. If you don’t want to go on and start a conversation I will do so. That has me intreeged for sure.
The reason they don’t offer remote control is they would have to maintain security servers to prevent hacking. I know it’s unlikely anyone would. But it’s easy to push data out. No security risk. But allowing inbound communication control is fairly complex and requires more expensive servers to maintain. They likely hire a third party developer who would have to price in the cost for this over x number of generators. If less than $100k annually, it wouldn’t be cost prohibitive
There is no excuse for them. When the customers ask, you deliver. Automobiles, home alarm systems, camera systems, my refrigerator, and home hvac thermostat for crying out loud! 😆 but not a $5,&10,$15,$20k generator? They have no defense to save $20 on this option. If anything else let the customers decide, same as as car option, heated seats or not. Power windows or not. Upgrade for rims, etc. just plain not offering it is totally ignorant.
Your hours runtime is off a bit, 5 min, times 52 weeks is 260 min, times three years is 780 min or 13 hours for three years. For one year that’s less than 4 1/2 hours.
One other thing - I would bite the bullet and run some electricity over to the unit and get one of those wrap around battery heaters - also put the battery on some plywood - it will help hold the heat from the blanket - dont use plywood between those heating pads you have and the battery - I have seen plywood catch fire from those heating pads.
Michael King thanks Michael, I was like holy cow!! I would have thought every comment would have been correcting the math. This video is devoid of mathematicians. Lol
italianrelic Really depends on a few factors. Budget, power needs, parts availability, and the amount of repair tech in the area. So for my needs, Generac was a good fit. Had I had more money to toss around, I would have went with Cummins. I love just outside a major city so parts and available techs are pretty widely available so it boiled down to cost and amount of power. The 22kw is what I needed, kohlers biggest for air cooled was 20 as was Cummins. The extra 2k and cost made the difference for me. I don’t not recommend Generac, I’ve hade flawless operations out of both my units, but would always go with a company that has years and years of name recognition and proven quality records. When I hear Cummins I immediately think positive quality and reliability, then the cost comes to mind. Your get what u pay for. Hearing the name Generac brings thoughts like oh yea I know them, then I get the what’s wrong with it though, followed by, oh did they screw you? They have work to do as far quality and listen to their customers. To answer your question I’d be recommending 75% Generac, 90% Kohler, and 100% Cummins.
Kohler has some issues with 'hunting' as well, if you have a laptop with their software, you can adjust some things, or update software. The large industrial Cummins gensets are good. Don't know how good their little 13kw, and 20kw units are, seems like parts availability and circuit board issues have been a problem for a couple people. With Cummins or pretty much any brand, what you have to look at is whats the parts and service availability in your area. If there's no Kohler techs nearby, how are you going to get warranty work done. Around my area, I've been hearing lots of complaints from big customers like large nursing homes, that the local Cummins customer service is god awful, and plenty of EGR/Emissions issues with the DPF (diesel particulate filter) getting clogged up from the same reason(s) you're getting the milky oil. Power is reliable around here, and the weekly exercise isn't putting enough of a load on the engine to burn off the soot. Which means you need a tech to come out with a laptop with Cummins Insite software, and do a manual regen. Same thing with trucks, except they call it a parked or forced regen. I have the Cummins Insite software, it wasn't cheap. About $700 a year subscription plus another $600 or so for the SAE J1907/1939 adapter box. I got the NexiQ instead of the Cummins Inline 7, because you can connect to multiple engine manufacturers like Detroit as long as you have the DDEC software etc. The newer heavy duty diesel backup generators have the same issues as modern highway trucks, it's the computer and emissions crap that'll get you, not the alternator/engine major components.
TL;DR version; Cummins is only good if #1, you can afford it; and #2 you, have good local Cummins techs nearby, too many mobile guys these days are just parts changers.
Dan my installer told me the same things about mobile link a waste of money and Generac doesn't listen. A case in point on the install my installer told me that this 22 KW generator and my 20 KW generator have the same engine 999 CC. The air intake tunnel elbow is not needed the current placement of this has a downward elbow that restricts the flow and this causes a hunt situation where as the generator is hunting for air. Since my installer did this at install it hasn't done it he showed me with this installed that it did hunt. I am running on Natural Gas since the line goes through my property. My generator has never failed to start when needed when everybody else is dark in the neighborhood I agree with the run time scenario. I run off grid a couple times a year. I do trust my installer more than I do Generac he has been installing for 38 years and has his own business.
Thomas Rock: Connecting to the air filter box and filter the black plastic goes and makes a 90% to the bottom towards the control panel that screws to the side panel of the control panel. He unscrewed it from that panel and the engine did not surge "hunt" any longer. A air aspirated engine no matter what kind needs lots of air it seemed to be restricted until he did this. Does this describe it okay?
I heard on the news the other day that Houston, Texas and surrounding area may experience brown-outs or black-outs this summer (2018). This is because: 1. More and more people and business are moving into the area. 2. Coal power power stations (3) are being shut down (government mandate... pollution). The Generac Evolution Controller on the Generac generator will sense the voltage is too low and switch off of the power company and onto the generator. Another reason to keep your Generac Generator in top running shape. We use a company "Wired Electric" for installation and servicing my generator. The big grocery stores here in Houston, HEB Grocery Chain are putting in "Whole Store Generators" that will run the whole store. These are massive natural gas generators. That company is called "Enchanted Rock Energy" www.erockhold.com/.
D Hansel Yes The evolution will sense the voltage difference and I believe the cut in, cut off can be adjusted a bit by your generac dealer. I ask about that when I read about the generac transfer switch coils getting burnt out from brownouts.
Kohler generators have an app that you get statistics like multiple temps, wattage being used and frequency and you get schedule and edit exercises and start and stop exercises, AND its free. Well its not free, it has a one time small fee but usually comes free with generator.
@@DeceLatina generac has the lock modules I use 3 of but the delay is built into the thermostat to not call for heat or air until 3 to 5 minutes after power is restored. I didn’t Kohler had remote monitoring options, that’s sweet. Generac needs to get with the times.
If your going to do a video like this you really need to check the wire sizes. The wires to and from the meter are not #4, 85 amp. They should be minimum #4/0 if they are aluminum borderline #2/0 if they are copper. The wires from the 22kw generator rated for 92 amps at 240 volts, should be minimum #2 copper. 😉
Keith Samrow I Don’t know that much detail. I didn’t install it myself. Generac dealer did and permits were pulled and inspections were passed by the city inspector. The correct wires were used in this install according to code regulation.
The incoming wire size from the utility is 4/0, not #4, big difference. For the 100A rating on the 22kw generator, you'd need 1/0 aluminum or #1 copper.
I've got a 22 KW Generac which was installed 4 years ago. I haven't had any problems with it at all and it came with a 10 year full parts and labor warranty. I had a Briggs and Straton 12 KW prior to the Generac and that unit needed repairs constantly.
Thank You after watching your video, I would never buy a Generac, you should not have to buy a baking mat and make all those fixes. That engine looks like it came from a lawn mower? My decision was so easy. I went with the Cummings liquid cooled RS25 Natural Gas, It is a Cummings 2.4 inline 4 cylinder car engine It was brilliantly engineered and it is monitored by Cummings remotely. I do nothing. My unit is so quiet its like a car idling very softly. 68 decibels.
Ah, that aren’t that bad but hardheaded on customer request for features. It gets the job done. However if I had the cash I’d of went with a Cummings also.
If you want your generator to run more often, just start it and let it run. What's the big deal? My installer told me to run it for 30 minutes each month and I will never have a problem with water in the oil. He has been installing and maintaining Generac Generators (and is also an air conditioning specialist ) for years and in the last 10 years has installed over 400 of them. He told me to change the oil yearly and check it regularly. It's easy to do and takes less than one minute. It's no different than I do with my cars. You can pull a dipstick on your car and tell instantly if your oil has water in it or if it smells burnt. The bottom line is Generac has a great reputation in home generators and I know people who have had them for decades and swear by them. Parts are readily available, which is always a big deal for me, and there are many installers and dealers within a small radius of where I live, should I need service. I do not work for Generac and have no reason to defend them. I understand what this gentleman is saying in his complaints, but I think the solutions are so easy that i wouldn't want to see anyone being turned away from buying one based on this video. Certainly this gentleman has a right to voice his concerns, and if you agree with him, fine. I have a 22KW Generac Generator and I think it's great.
This video was not made to try to persuade people from buying generac. This is an experience and his thought in the equipment. Your welcome to post up a video of your views and experiences with your unit.

Ed By the way your videos are very helpful than you Dan.
er1073
Oh wow, any idea what caused the system to get fried?
@@dan8220 the best he could figure was a lightening strike somewhere close to us but that could of been 20 miles away. I knew something wasn't right I am glad I caught it but dang it was expensive now my homeowners should cover it. I wish I knew somebody to make Mobile Link do what it should be able to do.
er1073
That’s interesting.
I will check out the link.
er1073 they are on the forum asking you questions, they are interested as well on what could have happened.
It came with WiFi access and the app allows me to control ALL functions of it remotely (i.e. change it from heating mode to cooling mode, adjust temperature, adjust air handler fan speed, set operating schedules etc.)
FYI: Somewhere around 3rd quarter 2017 Generac revealed its new redesigned engine to be used in their Generac standby units.
Great review, as well as your personal insights.
Enjoyed your Generac reviews, all 3 on the 2200.
Great job on the video. Very helpful
thanks so much. didn't know mobile link was not a smart phone scenario. that's really sad someone at generac isn't in charge of paying attention to what we want in a generators these days.
I agree with everything you said Dan. Generac should start listening to their customers. One day a Japanese company will come in and spank them just like they did the automotive companies.

absolutely, they will end up like the Kmart of their industry. Sinking ship!
When I'm not sure what kind of wire is used, I usually just lick them. If one eyeball flies out of my skull it's a 4, 2 eyeballs a 5 etc...

5 minutes x 52 weeks is 260 MINUTES (not hours I think), thanks for the video I'm getting ready to buy something for power outages.
Dirty Business 22KW generator only puts out 100 amps. #3 wire is rated at 100 amps
where did you get your stakes that goes in ground for propane regulator? and also where did you get magnet for oil filter? thanks
Thanks!
Rock Steady
I think the trick is to pull the battery up on its side then slide it out allowing it to slide around the curves better. Tilt it toward you onto its side then pull it toward the front and it should come right out.
@@dan8220 It's time to replace the thing so I'll give your tip a try. Thanks so much! This was not a good design.
Hello! Great video. Do you have a link to the oil filter magnet and battery insulator? Thanks I’m advance.
The magnet was just a round magnet I got at Harbor freight and the insulator I think you are talking about is the pad under the battery? That’s a silicon baking pad I cut down. I think I got it from walmart.com.
Great info Dan. If you had to do it over which brand whole house would you get today? 2019

Also I forgot to add, I got the cold weather kit as far as for the oil filter. My dealer also suggested I don't get the current battery blanket that is out. I wonder if I got it and put think rubber down first and then the blanket and the battery on top of it, if that would help with a shorting out issue.
Mr Glock23
This blanket is for the liquid cooled units
www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/Generac-Guardian-0A6193/p1253.html
The other pad kind is for the air cooled units. www.electricgeneratorsdirect.com/Generac-7101/p70535.html
I’m not aware of a blanket for air cooled, but that same liquid cooled blanket can be used with a thermal cube, www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0006U2HD2/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_17?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2EADKR0W1QAA
however there is no live 110v supply to hook it up too inside your generator, you’d have to run a feed and install an outlet.
Mr Glock23
Oh absolutely, you can run it whenever what you want, just push the manual button on the control pad on the generator and it will start and run until you stop it. To stop it push auto and it goes back into auto standby mode, or if you want to run it under load go to your transfer switch, take off the front cover and turn that switch off, simulating an outage and it run and transfer your house to the generator until you turn the switch back on.
Great thank you!!
I hate to see you got hooked up with Generac - a kubota diesel with a lime gen end would me very good - all u have to do is order what they call a critical muffler ... good luck

So far so good. I don’t have any operational complaints. This is my 2nd unit and both have operated flawlessly. I think their mobile options could be much better but other than that I’m satisfied so far. Just last week we ran 12 hours on it, no worries. Bad wind storm knocked out power.
We have some older Generacs on our fire trucks. We cannot get parts for them. I own 2 generators. No Generacs.
Great series of videos on your experience with this unit. I've been looking for this kind of info. Question on the battery: How about getting the highest amount of cold cranking amps in that size battery to overcome the cold, like say around 800 instead of their standard 525 or whatever it is?
Jere616
You could get a bigger CCA if you’d like.
I thought they shut themselves off if out of oil?
Ther are designed to yes.
great videos Dan, I have 22kw ,I just purchased the cold weather oil and battery pad, can you show where they connect at inside the generator if you have time.I Know it connects to n1 and n2, can I get to them if I remove that top cover only? Also what did you put under your battery pad so it wont short out..thanks
cyborg1117
Yea, remove the 4 bolts and then the steel plate will come off, there is a black cap covering the n1 and n2 connections, remove that and one plugs into the n1 and the other one on the n2. Mine has a yellow wire on each one. You have to use a screw driver to push down the top and the wire slides right in. The wire harness have a white and black wire that pigtail together to a point. Very simple plug and play.
Unable to program the exercise cycle for more than 5 minutes is what bugs me.
yeah me too, that's a software update, should be able to run 5, 10, 15 minutes etc if so desired

I looked everywhere too. That was during the big propane shortage in 2012-14 so finding a company that would sell was impossible. I ended up finding
www.hallpropaneandtanks.com/
They delivered it. 😎
Dan thank you for all the help!

Oh wow! What was the cause of the fire!
John Thorpe

This talks about generator fires a little bit.
@@dan8220 Apparently fires in some of these has been an issue: www.danspapers.com/2018/10/generac-backup-generator-explosions-east-end/
John Thorpe
That seems a bit suspicious.
35:39 wow it started when cold. Cold start but warm start
Your hours runtime is off a bit, 5 min, times 52 weeks is 260 min, times three years is 780 min or 13 hours for three years. For one year that’s less than 4 1/2 hours.
Keith Samrow
Yea, that’s been noted. Thanks Keith
JT H I
got an oven rated silicone cooking mat between the battery and the generator floor, to stop the shorting out I read about.
Check your math on the maintenance run time. It's 5 min x 52 weeks a year = 260 minutes a year or 4.33 hours a year.
Michael King thanks Michael, I was like holy cow!! I would have thought every comment would have been correcting the math. This video is devoid of mathematicians. Lol
So do you 100% recommend this generator or go with something else??
italianrelic
Really depends on a few factors.
Sorry about that, 13 hours total for 3 years
I heard on the news the other day that Houston, Texas and surrounding area may experience brown-outs or black-outs this summer (2018).
This is because:
D Hansel
Yes The evolution will sense the voltage difference and I believe the cut in, cut off can be adjusted a bit by your generac dealer. I ask about that when I read about the generac transfer switch coils getting burnt out from brownouts.
Kohler generators have an app that you get statistics like multiple temps, wattage being used and frequency and you get schedule and edit exercises and start and stop exercises, AND its free. Well its not free, it has a one time small fee but usually comes free with generator.
also theres a load shit kit where ACs come on after 5 mins, from when the generator turns on, for an extra 150$.
@@DeceLatina generac has the lock modules I use 3 of but the delay is built into the thermostat to not call for heat or air until 3 to 5 minutes after power is restored. I didn’t Kohler had remote monitoring options, that’s sweet. Generac needs to get with the times.
I didn't look at all the comments, so someone may have already done the math, 5 minutes a week for 3 years is a total of 130 hours

They have yes, hahaha 😂
13 hours
If your going to do a video like this you really need to check the wire sizes. The wires to and from the meter are not #4, 85 amp. They should be minimum #4/0 if they are aluminum borderline #2/0 if they are copper. The wires from the 22kw generator rated for 92 amps at 240 volts, should be minimum #2 copper. 😉

I Don’t know that much detail. I didn’t install it myself. Generac dealer did and permits were pulled and inspections were passed by the city inspector. The correct wires were used in this install according to code regulation.

Sounds to me like keith needs too make a TH-cam video..👀👊🏻Seeing how he has no videos posted!!
The incoming wire size from the utility is 4/0, not #4, big difference. For the 100A rating on the 22kw generator, you'd need 1/0 aluminum or #1 copper.
I’m not sure, I tried to get some close ups so one could maybe tell. I did not install it.
Generac generators sucks buddy great video very professional
is that why they have 90% of the market!
Totally agree! a gaseous standby generator that screams at 3600 rpm?
I'm going with a diesel.
Bullshit- generac is the Best,!
VERY informative too bad Generac does not care I will look at other brands and not Generac.

go for Cummings generators if you can.
