Just an FYI, the only way I've found to get the transfer pump to run on our '12 Passat TDI was with the output test, the basic setting function is not available. The output test does cycle the pump on and off, but is able to purge all of the air out of the system.

Mine (CAYC 1.6tdi 2013) ran for 2 minutes approx. during which time display showed 'running'. After 2 min, I heard the pump stop and the display showed 'not running'. This was following a fuel filter change (non oem filter). It could be my imagination, but the motor seems slightly less eager toward end of useable rev range just before changing up gears. Is it worth repeating the bleed procedure? Otherwise, the motor runs smoothly.
What could happen if you by chance didn't follow this procedure before changing the fuel filter? I understand this is to ensure no air gets trappes inside the lines but what would be the consequences if air was introduced onto the system?
It will just flow fuel back into the fuel tank. Nothing bad will happen as long as when you are finished running the test you remember to hit the stop button. The point of the procedure is to bleed any air in the system if a service to the fuel system was performed and air was introduced into the fuel lines or system .

This is rubish as there are 2 fuel pumps that needs to be activated together. Just use 2m of 4 wire and put a connector on the end. Connect all 4 pieces to car battery and purge the system in 5 sec
You forgot to add that with a completely drained fuel system in a diesel engine, the procedure you are talking about carries the RISK of DAMAGE to the tandem pump. The tandem pump is the pump that raises the pressure of the fuel supplied by the pump in the tank. If you activate both fuel pumps at the same time, the fuel pump at the engine that raises the pressure of the fuel supplied by the pump in the fuel tank runs dry for a while.

I connect a small battery to the pump with small spade connectors. Remember, brown is ground on a vw.

On the Common Rail generation, it is important to purge air out to avoid possible damage to the HPFP.
