      Just picked up one about 1.5 weeks ago. I was not a Cold Steel fan. Love the blade and my thought are just as yours.
      I wish it had Ti liners and the pommel was metal - it seems to be polymer. I’ll have those items upgraded and it will serve as my “apocalypse folder”.
      Oh, I bought another yesterday. 🤭

    I absolutely LOVE Cold Steel! Have for twenty years. Best bang for the buck in the knife world period. Glad you enjoy this model. You should try some others! By the way, I’m not a Cold Steel fanboy, as I own more Spyderco than Cold Steel as well as ZT, Benchmade, Kershaw, Buck, CRKT and others. Nice review!

    Demko did invent the TRI-AD lock....The only difference between his custom and the AD-10 is the material i.e. Titanium vs. Aluminum . There is a video he made on you tube about the difference of the two. I was totally surprised with this one. Definitely worth the money IMO!

    • @omegarad123
      @omegarad123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the aluminum liners help to lighten the ad10...and aluminum isn't as weak as some may think...one way to test its strength is to do this ..take a soda can and squeeze it with your hand..then take the tab you use to open the soda and try to bend it..(much) harder to do..plus the liners are almost twice as thick as the soda tab and probably a better grade of aluminum as well..like I said the test sounds stupid but its true.

      Yes Demko did invent the triad lock. I watched an interview he did with The Big Canucker and he talks about how he designed it and why. I hope this helps.

    I never liked Cold Steels marketing of the Triad either, but that hasn't stopped me from buying them. I wanted the AD10 because I liked the way it looked. When I purchased this folder I didn't expect to EDC it, well I have and it has performed unexpectedly well. I had no idea it was going to be such a great slicer, I had no idea the action was going to be as good as it is. I think this folder is a real deal at $150.00.

    I Love Cold Steel Knives. Most e.d.c. only type guys don't like CS marketing and CS is not marketing towards you guys , they market to the Military , and to Hunters , and to First Responders and Hard Use Guys and I guarantee these people Love CS's marketing. These people want to know that they can trust their knives in tough situations and not have to worry about the knife breaking or maybe loosing a finger from a weak lock . They don't care if the knife is comfy in their pocket or how it cuts open an envelope. So if you don't like CS's marketing don't watch it , it's not for you anyway .

    Very fair review on a widely popular model. They hit a home run this year with this and the ad15.
    I’m with you on the tiny torx. It’s funny to have a t6 on a rajah 2.
    Even worse I just reviewed a tighe breaker and the pivot screw is T5. I stripped 2 china bits because my wiha went down to t6. I went out on the same day to buy another wiha set just so that I can adjust the pivot HAHAH. I was so scared to strip the screw. It was like the Hurt Locker.

    The Cold Steel AD-10 may be the best production folding knife ever made. This knife can do it all. It is simply amazing. Also, Cold Steel in general---like them or not---provides the best value for your money of any knife company in my opinion. I have Spydercos, ZTs, Benchmade, Buck, Kershaw, etc., etc., and Cold Steel gives you quality steel at a good price.

      Can they? Its one of the most argued about topics in the knife community. Hard use is defined by the individual. Somewhere between continuous cutting into wood or rubber and smashing the blade with a sledge hammer.

    The 4Max leaps over that line that the AD10 stepped over.
    Thick 20CV blade
    Ti Liners, Backspacer, and clip.
    It’s a monster. Much more knife for the money, than you can get anywhere else.
    For a blade that size, and that premium, you have to look at Medford, Crusader Forge, etc.
    And you ain’t gonna get it for nowhere near the price of a 4Max.

    • @Wolverine-hj2cd
      @Wolverine-hj2cd 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only thing I prefer about the 4 max over this guy is the 20cv steel. It's just too big to be a practical edc to me, something the size of the ad10 or ultimate Hunter is a perfect hard use folder to me. If they make me ad10 in 20cv I will snatch that in a heartbeat 😂

    Great review, I use to feel the same way about knives coming out of Taiwan. These Cold Steel's and Spyderco knives made in Taiwan have really made a difference on how I feel about knives coming out of this region. They take second place to nothing. Fit, finish and materials are impeccable. The Cold Steel AD10 is perfection. My second choice would be the Spyderco Southard made in Taiwan, another engineering marvel.

    Your choice of a liner lock matches mine, perfectly! I have always argued that in almost every case, a liner lock is more than adequate. The deployment issues a frame lock often causes aren’t worth the trouble. Liner locks have been perfected, are plenty strong, allow the use of decorative materials on the lock side, and don’t cause deployment problems. I will buy and use all kinds of knives, but my first choice will always be a liner lock.

    There was a time I shied away from big knives. I had tried a couple, and they seemed to “swim” on me! But I’ve tried a few more now, and I find that many if not most of them fit my hand just fine. I feel that a big knife is more for my money, and can do almost anything a small knife can do, plus quite a few things a small knife CAN’T do.

    Cold Steel's marketing kind of rubs me weird as well. But when I saw the AD10 I liked it a lot. Waited until I found a deal and then jumped on it. Seriously worth it IMO. Mine is a hollow ground model, I hear the new ones are flat. I wouldn't care either way, but it is a very sharp, very slicey blade. It's a large knife, but honestly very carryable. And it will take a beating. Definetly an addition to my collection that is not going anywhere. I did learn that some great knives do let their knives make in Taiwan and ultimately the company is responsible for the final product. So if the company is extremely picky they would not accept a bad finish. So if the company is good it doesnt matter its made in Taiwan. China is a different story for me still.. but Taiwan and Japan fine by me. With al do respect.

    I have had only one cold steel product that I was not happy with , the grinds were wonkey and the pivot pin on the triad lock was seated crooked and I was worried that it would fail ? , it was the lone star hunter I was extremely disappointed because I love the fundamental design and full flat grind and now it's hard to find new . I understand about the concerns with their marketing and practices , I only own some of their very low budget knives but I like /love them. If you're looking for a very small edc full tang user I highly recommend the mini Pendleton hunter , it's sturdy and light weight and I find it very comfortable despite its size and I have xxl large hands , the sheath does not create any problems getting in and out of vehicles or sitting and is easy to deploy and resheath one handed and is low profile , the sheath is not impressive but I don't feel that it's worth upgrading. Thanks for the review I like this AD10 and enjoyed your review. Thanks

    For me it's between getting the ad10 and the shaman....I'm personally leaning toward the ad10 but since they've went away from a hollow grind to a flat grind I'm not sure...it doesn't seem like the ad10 would take a very sharp edge in its current state compared to when it was hollow...and what sways me away from the shaman is that in the videos to me the blade doesn't look that thick or beefy its not necessarily that I want the ad10 more than the shaman ..I'm just confused...and the weight of a knife isn't an issue...the day I moan and groan about a knife that ways out in oz"s not (pounds) than I'm pathetic anyway and shouldn't even leave the house lol

    Bro help me decide between the AD-10 and AD-15 I can't choose which one I want, and I don't really want both. I just want a folder I can kick the crap out of but is still smooth with nice action. I boiled it down to the AD-10 and AD-15, really can't decide.

    • @scotteger6271
      @scotteger6271 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're both pretty tough folders but if you look at how the scorpion lock on the AD15 functions it basically cannot fail, or if it did it really can't close and hurt you, as you're applying pressure to the lock bar. That said, the AD10 looks tougher...just because of the gap in the AD15. Its a personal preference kind of thing but I've decided on both. AD10 for general use and AD15 for those times when I want something more interesting...possibly a conversation starter. I have and carry Benchmade, Spyderco, Bestech, Kizer, Boker, Gerber, etc. I've started liking these bigger, tougher knives lately though.

      @@scotteger6271 Honestly very well, it holds an edge surprisingly long for a non powder steel, it kind of reminds me of Hogues 154CM, the way it keeps a good edge even after chopping. Then only takes 1-2 passes on a ceramic rod and it's back past hair shaving sharp. I love this steel.

    I get it. Cold Steel marketing is so over the top. Even if they are objectively great tools, there is nothing that even resembles humility in how they do things across the brand. Everyone parrots how the triad lock is the strongest ever...but I think this idea spread because it's actually true. I was not initially a cold steel fan, but over the years, I have accumulated more of their knives than the next two brands put together. They are hilariously extreme and pretentious in they way the represent their knives, but they are such great and reliable tools, I cant help but defend them.

This just looked too good to pass up at this price point so I bought one as an alternative to a fixed blade. I'm going to use this for backpacking and backwoods camping as It takes up less space than a fixed blade and there is no extra sheath weight. Bonus. Cheers!

    I think if you don't expect a cold steel to cut you probably haven't had a ton of experience with them. From my experience they tend to come out of the box very sharp and well designed for cutting and ergonomics in the hand. Admittedly the advertising stinks and the fans can be somewhat annoying and I don't agree with their political principles or some of their business actions but they make good knives at a good price.
    The Code 4 is a great value imo, the Recon 1 is less of a good value but still comes in ahead of most big name brands but it's still a great knife as a tool though it's obviously not nearly the fidget spinner of the knife world that the axis lock or compression lock knives can be. The Voyager knife series are okay value some of the others are mixed but the flagships are really bringing the value. Oh right the American Lawman also a good one, as is the broken skull if you can get over the dumb name.

    Cold Steel does it again. Dude , you have it wrong , Cold Steel has plenty of "Real" hard use and tactical knives made for the real world . Don't knock it , till you try it . Yes, some of their marketing is over the top , but their testing is real , and their knives are true. And they also have some of the Best Bang for Buck Knives on the market , I mean they have a dozen models with XHP or S35VN priced under , some well under , $100 , not many companies can say that. And by the way, the Tri AD lock has been beating the piss out of frame locks for years , just check out some of their videos or you can ask CRK .

      Seriously. Another thing people overlook is that cold steel always gives you very good edge geometry. Their grinds and edges always slice and perform as a slicer first and a chopping machine second. Alot of manufacturers send you a brick that is so thick behind the edge it can't even slice mail open. While cold steels tend to be big monstrous blades they succeed at slicing much better than some of the competition.

    Opinel has the strongest locking mechanism for me, concept not material wise.
    The entire pivot section is surrounded 360 degrees by 2 steel sleeves which prevents forward backward and sideways motion. Cold Steel is very strong in one direction only but not for sideways torque.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In concept, you may be correct. It would be interesting to see a more "heavy duty" version of Opinel's ring lock.
