    Pretty much a crossover knife from pocket to fixed blade survival. I happen to like big folders and this knife does not disappoint. The wide blade options that cold steel offers are truly impressive from a durability standpoint. A lot of people do not like cold steel knives and they make their arguments but, Lynn Thompson and Andrew Demko have made more contributions to the knife community in recent history than virtually anyone else. The company offers a blade for any purpose that you need.

    I carried average size knives for decades, benchmade, strider, at, Emerson, … I was never happy. Until I got my hands on a Cold Steel Voyager XL. Love at first sight. I have big hands and until I found this knife, everything was always wanting.

    It's simple, and it's not that large... normally you don't go around with a fixed blade in your waist, so, you have a pocket, capable and reliable knife that you can carry in every circumstance ( maybe not the date dinner)...

    Love this knife, this is my EDC when at work, the size is helpful when trying to manipulate with one hand when wearing gloves, tough enough to hold up to the oilfield but affordable enough that if for some reason it gets broken. Handle and blade are easy to spray clean when it gets greasy. 10/10

    Good review. Yes it is comically large and not really for the office or dress pants. My pocket clip was so tight as to be unusable out of the box, but it was an easy fix. I still prefer my large Voyager for a carry knife, but when you need to go big, this thing rocks.

    My neighbor got one before I did, we are always buying knives and brother I love me some cold Steel.
    Cold Steel makes knives for anytime any place, good weather, bad weather they have the knife for you.
    This 4Max Scout will be mine very soon. I own many Cold Steel knives, machetes walking sticks, never once have I been disappointed.
    The right tool for the right job. Nevertheless like everyone else, just my opinion. Great video thanks for sharing.

    I take this badboy when I head out sledding or quadding and lemme tell you making a quick bush fire for a meal is so easy it's not even funny with this beast. I bought mine lightly used for $45 and it has more than paid that back itself in it's capabilities even as an edc surprisingly due to the choil.

    Greetings from Finland and an awesome GT video again. You’re absolutely right that you can use this great big folding knife in cold winter with thick gloves very easily. The 4max Scout is definitely my favorite when I don’t want to carry my fixed blades (e.g. BK2) in a winter forest having 1m of snow for several months.

      @@kenmastersmaster by that time when i made this comment, ad10 was about 150 I guess, and 4max scout 60+ I know that ad10 costs more for that steel and handle materials, but for that price range 4max scout is unbeatable

    • @kenmastersmaster
      @kenmastersmaster ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Levkhat it's funny when the ad10 went to $90 the 4max was around $80 so it's a no brainier to get the ad10. 4 max is kind of a dumb knife compared to ad10/ad15. It's good for $60 but I wouldn't pay $80-100 for it unless they use better scales or steel. But if you want a big knife just get a Voyager xl. Better for slicing and also $60 but lighter and 1.5 inches longer and even comes serrated which is useful for cutting and sawing

    • @Levkhat
      @Levkhat ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kenmastersmaster I am not comparing scout to ad10/15. I own most of the cold steels and I am a big fan, there is no doubt that ad10 or ad15 are better than 4maxscout, but for a hard heavy use, they can't beat scout

    • @kenmastersmaster
      @kenmastersmaster ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Levkhat S35 steel destroys aus10 by huge margins in edge retention and corrosion resistance. There have been durability tests on TH-cam where the aus10 loses its edge while s35 goes easily 3 times longer. The 4 max should have come with s35 and I don't mean the elite which is $300. The scout needs better steel and handles while staying around $100

  • @DL-ij7tf
    @DL-ij7tf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    People often mock these knives from the viewpoint of being an unreasonably large pocketknife, which it is, but it makes more sense to think of them as a fixed blade knife that folds. For a fixed blade knife they're a fairly modest size and they're made so well they'll stack up in durability and use with most any actual fixed blade. You don't have to carry a sheath and it only takes up half the size. It could fit it a lot of small pockets like horizontally on a backpacking waistbelt or in the administration pocket of any pack. This isn't to say everyone should get one but I do think there's a realistic niche where these big folders have advantages other than just being a comically large pocketknife.

    • @DL-ij7tf
      @DL-ij7tf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @DTL I actually agree about the 4Max, I just don't think I'd use it or like it enough to tote it around even in a pack. I love the AD10 and some of CS's other knives including the Airlite but I wish they all had steel liners, a feature I think any hard use folder should include. The AD10 is aluminum so that's something.

    I’ve had mine for 2 years now, and my edc in bush, it makes cutting game down easy. And chopping lighter then a hatchet and more usage for me. Weight isn’t an issue, use to have weight on hips from webbing or duty belt. Love it

  • @rsafree1139
    @rsafree1139 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I have found that I have a tough time choosing between this and an Esee 4 S35VN for an edc that can do hard use tasks and squeeze into a survival role. They are similar in size and both weigh 10 ounces (with sheath on esee). Each have their advantages and disadvantages. Esee has better steel, a lifetime warranty, and obviously can’t break the lock. 4 max is half the price, so even if you somehow managed to break it you can buy a second and still be less than the esee. So warranty isn’t a big deal here. I highly doubt you will break the lock. 4 max is actually more ergonomic even though it’s a folder, due to the large handle. And the 4 max is a better chopper because it carries its full weight on the knife, whereas the esee leaves 2 ounces on the sheath. Plus the longer handle lets you get a better wrist flick. The esee batons slightly better because there’s no thumb stud in the way. Overall I like them both for this role and have a hard time choosing, but right now I’m leaning towards the 4 max.

I don't use that knife for anything else but there have been occasions where someone asked me for a knife and I whip it out and their expressions are priceless because of its size and design. I found after a few carries that knife is so comfortable and perfect for me, I've almost spent the $ buying another 1 as a edc for every task. Put it in a belt sheath, don't put it in your pocket.
    Also, you can "fix" the "throwing sparks" problem by sharpening a chosen spot on the spine to be an acute 90deg.
    Also, i believe the ORIGINAL 4max was created prior to the AD10. So, in fact the 4max is the parent of the AD10 NOT the reverse.
    Also..
    I absolutely disagree with you about using it for food prep. It's a fabulous vegetable chopper, meat cutter if you are used to Chinese cleavers, or Japanese nakiri.
    Opening boxes is a dream because the shear mass of the knife blasts through cardboard, heavy packaging tape, and harder plastic packages than a tiny knife.

    So good first use
    Update 2 :
    I messed mine up and had to order a new one,
    No fault of the knife though

    Cold Steel fan boy here. The AD-10 is the child, not parent of 4MAXX I believe. Please review the 5 MAXX, it is even more awesome ! Stronger than that fixed blade Becker, and its a folder; quite likely. BTW, I do not carry mine in my pocket, but in my back pack.

  • @LarsBreuning
    @LarsBreuning 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    It's not everywhere you can conceal carry a fixed blade, and this is where the 4-Max comes into play. It's as close to a fixed blade as any folder comes. I carry an Italian 4-Max CPM-20CV in a belt holder, an SR1 in my pocket and a Spartan around my neck. :)
    Btw the lock-pin on the Scout is smaller than on the 20CV version.

  • @DDDYLN

    The problem is that many states & municipalities won't allow someone to conceal carry a fixed blade knife. That's where this knife, and knives like the Voyager XL make sense. I make no bones about it. I carry my Voyager XL for self defense. I'll likely never use it for anything but self defense. For that type of work, I'll carry a fixed blade.

    G'day Aaron, yep love the beefy fellas, particularly from CS. Only problem is if I had one of these many of my other folders and indeed smaller fixys become somewhat obsolete; its already a bit that way with the Recon 1 and Gator premo. Cheers Duke.

    I’m pretty positive that this knife will out perform many fixed blade knives on the market (as far as durability goes). If you are doubting that, just watch the video on the channel JOE X. I’m extremely confident that I’ll never break this knife. If it does actually break while I’m using it then a train piggybacking on the space shuttle just fell on my head.

    I really like my 4max, and the AUS10 is waaay better than I thought it’d be, it takes a really keen convex edge, holds it pretty well, and it strops back to keen quick-n-easy.
    I never “edc” it, thats kinda silly for 99.9% of my life, but every time I travel or trail it certainly rides in my all-purpose Vanquest FTIM pouch with all the essentials… it kick out my SR1 (g10/s35vn) because the 4max is more comfortable and it slices better.
    The AD10 is a great option for a pack strap or chest bag.
    But.. I dont like the big gap between the scale and thumb stud, its kinda awkward. The handle could be a bit thicker through the index finger area.

  • @mountaingoattaichi

    I got the SR1 lite for the reasons you mentioned. On some hikes, there are a lot of people on them. So I think having a decent-sized knife in my pocket, rather than having a fixed blade that draws too much attention is best. I also EDC it in my back pocket while I keep my Prolite in the front for more detailed work. I am looking into getting a recon one to replace my carrying two knives. Do you think the recon 1 could cover both a large knife option in a pinch and the smaller detailed work? Generally, I would love to see a video discussing the Cold Steel folder line-up and all the comparisons and uses.

    I will prefer a fixed blade for heavy duty tasks ,any time of the year. For sure is a beast of a knife , folds and rests in your pocket, but i wont replace for my activities my Lionsteel T5, for this bad boy. It makes sense for a constractor to cary and use it also.

    Good stuff Aaron. This knife to me fits what I call 'transitional-zone' of folding knives. I believe you did a good job here with explanations of just that. While to some not all that practical to even marveling, entertaining conversation piece. That said, instead of macho big-knife bragging rights... it has a suitable place in the folding survival/utility genre. I like the handle design and size best of all. The locking mechanism is proven very effective, rugged, and un-likely to fail from reasonable to more demanding conditions. Quite a good deal at $75 PRIME!!! My Ol' Spartan is in my 'transitional zone' I still have a nearly minty condition with box Blackout Rajah II... that I guess is now cool-factor grail-status for Cold Steel Collectors... So I have decided not put any mileage on 'er to devalue it. Are you still 'rockin' a Rajah II? Any longer term mileage & thoughts on it?
