Time Attack: Dustys + Manitou Mezzer Pro testing

  • Spent a few hours out in SC laying down some consistent laps on Dusty’s to get some baseline understanding of the feel and performance between two Manitou Mezzer Pro damper tunes. I ran them both wide open on compression dials to allow me to only feel the difference in the damper in its most active position.
I found more speed with the stock damper because it is smoother, so I can choose lines more confidently. But the stock damper doesn’t like to be “pumped” on the trail as much as the light tune. I like to pump and pop my bike around, which the light tune helps with but doesn’t help with keeping everything under control to slice seconds off a run.
Whilst I have seen that the stock tune is faster, I’m still looking for a bit more pop, so I have now switched to stock shim stack but with the 3wt oil to help with a slightly faster rebounding fork. We’ll find out in future if that was the move or not.
    Bike Setup:
Frame: Transition Spire Alloy with a Works Components +1 deg headset (now 64 deg HA) - Medium - (I'm 5,8")
    Fork: Manitou Mezzer Pro 180mm.
    Light Tune: (46psi/72psi) (LC: -10/10, HC: -5/5, LR: -5/10) (20% sag)
    Stock Tune: (45.5/72psi) (LC: -10/10, HC: -5/5, LR: -5/10) (21ish% sag)
Shock: EXT Storia V3 Lok, 350lb coil (LC: -4/13, HC: -5/15, LR: -5/10) (30% sag)
Wheels: Crankbrothers Synthesis 11 Enduro, 19/22psi
Brakes: Shimano XT 4 piston, 200mm, MTX Ceramic Gold pads
Tires: Continental Xynotal / Kryptotal Re, 2.4", Supersoft F&R, DH
Cranks: Truvativ Descendant, 165mm, With O-Chain device set at 6deg
    Groupset: Shimano XT 12spd
Bar Stem: ProTaper C12 carbon, 31.8 x12mm bars, 45mm stem

Greatly explained video! Voice overs sounded good and again the explaining of the fork was great, and even a noob at dialing saspenshon such as myself can understand.

Glad you enjoyed it dude. It’s never perfect, but it’s the exploration of what works and what doesn’t thats the fun part.

You were hauling ass! I'm actually in the process of adjusting the tune on my damper. I got a tune from Shockcraft in NZ including their high speed rebound piston. Might be worth checking that out.

Great video. I have a coiled Z1 on my Patrol. Definitely like the coiled feel in the front but at over 200 pounds it can feel very sketchy in all out speed. I've been looking at the Mezzer but wasn't sure how it would compare to the other 38mm options out there. Have you had any time on the others? And would the Mezzer be good for "heaveir" riders?

Hey Brandon, i came off a fox 38, 36, and this fork is lighter than both of those forks and is equally as stiff as the 38.
The fork is probably better suited for heavyer riders (the stock damping is targeted around aggressive riding for probably around 170-200lb riders) So i think that this form would suit you very well and should be pretty damn smooth. With the super adjustable air spring you should find the support and smoothness you need.

Are you using the manitou mezzer setup table? Feels like the settings are more geared towards racers.

I keep going back to their suggestions, but I always go less. They recommend 48.5 // 75.5 for me at 155lbs. I'm currently running at 42.5 // 76, and that's after racing the Trans BC enduro through Squamish, Pemberton, Whistler finishing 16th/160. I still rarely bottomed out.

@thegratefulflow-mtb also got a alloy spire and just installed a +1 headers angle. Did a quick test ride and should've installed it earlier!

@thegratefulflow-mtb I'm abit heavier at 88kg 170mm but decided to follow the manitou recommendations and drop the main like yourself. Fork is feeling great right now. Thanks for the tips!

Awesome vid! So who makes the dampner and who did the lighter tune (shim and oil)? Thanks!

The damper is still a Manitou product. I do the work myself but you or someone with a little bit of know how, can dissemble the fork and make changes to the shims and refill with oil. It’s a bit messy because of oil, but it’s a very simple procedure that can be done at home.

Sorry, but With thinner oil better use a Stronger compression shimstack. From 3 Tuners that improve mezzers I know that 2 Go that Route and IT improves the fork in several ways.
Lighter compression tune and lighter oil does Not make any Sense in theory as Well.
So please have a try this way 😊

I've just seen this. Thank you for sharing. It wasn't making much sense to me either, but that's what an engineer recommended me. I'm going to give what you said a try. I've got a spare damper ready for a fluid swap too.

Great If You have the Damper for Spare,Just send IT to NSR and at least let someone callibrate the bushings of the Castings. Best,of course, would BE,Sendung hin the while Fork as He will lower the friction immensely. Or Just send the Rest of the fork to beides the Damper DZ SUSPENSION. He does this Wole friction reduction Thing, burnishing and polishing for the best price by far.
