Yes. When you work with people for many-many years, you just don't wake up one morning and become narcissistic. You were managing yourself for years and then overnight: you become someone with personality disorder. One day you wake up and you say: I will take down my workplace. You will not think that you alone will start to manipulate from a position where you are not on top. You will take down the whole shebang. It is much more likely that you actually spoke up for the injustice, people in position and power over you decided to silence you and run a negative ad campaign. In my case, it is very hard because I see many opportunities that fits my qualification, but that long time employment with those people who will not gave positive reference is just years of hole in the resume. I experienced such of abuse that I can recognize an environment where the structure is unhealthy and ego driven. I also learned how much time and energy can be wasted on workplace politics at the expense of creativity and sufficiency. I believe that a group of people who have passion for their job, dedicated to the task, have respect for each other, open minded and listen to their coworkers can move mountains.

I deposited complaince with HR and they brush everything under the carpet. I suffered PTSD and felt suicidal after. The Union couldn't help me. I left that job few months ago. I am so sorry to hear you lost your baby and that nobody you would've relied on was there to stand up for you. I don't know what I'm going to do now (will I become homeless? I don't have much of a support network to rely on or help me through this). I know you wrote this a month ago (I got fired last week). One way to deal with a bully is to get yourself a bigger "bully" in the form of a strong union or an experienced lawyer. It is important to remember that having taken such action, you will no longer be able to work for the organization. At least, you will leave with your dignity, having fought the good fight, and might even make life easier for those workers who remain.

Bullies are everywhere in organizations now. They are used as the "attack dogs" for senior management. They have been in effect given a license to kill, and what they do is manage out employees who they think are threats, or occupy positions that they would like to see filled by one of their confederates. For the most part, they attack and see the response. Then the response is made the issue, not the initial attack. So the target will be seen as a "difficult employee" if they cannot handle "frank criticism." They keep attacking until they get the response they want. Your job is not to given in. You will be tested at some point.

I realize I am seeing this presentation months after presented and commented on, but that is the beauty of the venue. I am a former Elementary School Teacher. Yearly our classrooms had presentations by the School Psychologist and performed role play examples of bullying. It was enlightening and effective not only in educating the students but teachers as well. I learned so much about the issues and how to identify bullies. One of the responses to a bully was to have a friend that will stand with you and refuting the bully's words by saying the opposite about the bullied person back to the bully. It kind of defuses their power.
I am now, a Senior Citizen, working for a Multi- million dollar foreign car company and see bullying going on from supervisors and team mates in the open office. Working in this Call Center environment you are EXPECTED to take bullying from the customer calling in as well. So Bullying by way of over supervising and managing, intimidating by way of public exhibits of performance levels(daily emails showing where you rank with everyone else's daily performance- in the effort to promote competitiveness- to everyone on the team), just a few ways and managing you by way of threats of being fired if you don't measure up in one area of competency when you excel in other areas constitutes bullying in my book.
Leading to open bullying verbally by team mates and belittling their value or rights for the sake of a laugh from others, within earshot of the Supervisor who only comments "Now come on guys." It hurts my heart to hear and see and experience this in the world. I've been trying to find another job, but am finding that "Ageism" has kicked in and past experience as a manager of up to 30 students in a classroom doesn't constitute the ability to work in the business world as a manager, so I take entry level positions, where you have to prove yourself in a call center meeting NUMBER metrics not Person metrics(performance on customer surveys, of which the majority are All 10s). Business Values NUMBERS not people.

I wish I'd known you 20 years ago. I've had great jobs and great bosses, but I have also had bullies. I've felt that bullying in the workplace is like domestic violence. It's done with no witnesses or before those who couldn't/wouldn't fight back. One boss came in whilst I was on the phone to a client, explaining their case to them, in a manner instructed by my other boss. This individual who stormed in said: "You're here to take messages, not to talk to clients" and whacked me on my left arm. I later discovered my rotor cuff had been displaced and had to go for physical therapy. On a later occasion it was the end of the month when the accounts tapes had to be transcribed. I had got in early and stayed late (not claiming overtime) to complete this task but my other boss had a very urgent tape which needed to be done immediately. This took an hour and a half out of the time I'd planned. I did said tape then resulted the accounts work when the above mentioned individual started shouting at me, that I was not trustworthy etc., etc. Me, exhausted and having taken much from this person I "had at it" with them both. They were shocked. They hadn't seen me respond (I hadn't told anybody about the assault because I wouldn't have been believed and possibly would have lost my job). The end result was negotiation and no further bullying occurred but this needs to be dealt with.

They organised annual 2 hours "training how to recognise bullying". Everyone could recognised it all right, the bullies' names were public knowledge. At one of the training sessions, a young HR man told the audience: "if the work situation is so awful, why bother to stay, to cling to the job. My advice: quit". One graduate on placement asked:"Isn't is the HR's role to prevent such cases and deal with situations". The HR man did not respond. He just left. The graduate was not hired. I find it hard to forget. Especially, as 1 work colleague committed subside, another suffered a heart attack at work and died. Employees were forbidden to speak about those deaths. A partner of the second man was pushed out of the organisation.

Thank you for confirming the very thing I have been saying for years. The company that finally understands what workplace bullying and harassment is and eradicates it and all other "office politics" (weak terminology for workplace harassment), will be the company that attracts and retains the best and brightest employees, and thus will be the most efficient, innovative and profitable company. Regrettably, I do not think I will ever see this in my career or lifetime, as it seems that sociopaths in the workplace is on a steady increase with no signs of any reversal.
I have been the target of a workplace sociopaths (workplace bullying) at my last three places of employment. As Andrew had mentioned, the main reason for the sociopath to target me was that they saw me as a threat. The workplace sociopath (bully) will always target those that are more talented, knowledgeable or hard working, unless the more talented, knowledgeable or hard working person capitulates to the sociopath (bully), often doing the work and coming up with innovative ideas, yet allowing the sociopath (bully) to have the credit and recognition.
I believe that some people are born a sociopath (narcissistic and having little or no empathy) and some learn sociopathic traits (I have read books that call this learned psychopathy). Many colleges / universities today instill the sociopathic ideals to students. Interestingly, I had seen video from Harvard Business School that taught people who to better "play the office politics". What Harvard should be teaching is how to eradicate office politics from the workplace.

I’m really so glad to have found this video. I have been bullied now for over 4 years that I have hard evidence to prove and it is exactly as he describes and is just as devastating to experience. It really does take a hard working energetic employee and turn them into a frightened shell of a human being. It’s literally horrific and definitely has the potential to make one consider taking their own life when they are truly the victim of bullies.

That Tedtalk by Andrew Faas says it all. It's a great summary of a complex problem. I live in Australia and came across this video just this week ( Aug 2017) I am over in England trying to forget the trauma inflicted by bullying and harassment over a period of several years. I was medically retired in the end Jan 2015 because I stayed until it was too late, as I loved the job and the kids I taught. The depression that comes from PTSD can hit you anywhere any time. I have come a long way in my recovery but being asked what work do I do or have I retired yet can be a trigger as has happened over here. Bullying is so rife in Australian workplaces too. I was bullied by the senior office manager, the principal and a couple of his minions in a primary school. Unblemished record until the principal got it in for me because I dared to report him for code of conduct breaches. I was targeted big time after that. He spent his July holidays concocting a 28 complaint report on my behaviour and conduct and that alone, with no previous blemish to my record in over 30 years was enough to get me medically retired. I was unwell by then but on reading that fallacious report did not return to that school that I'd dedicated half my life to (28 years) I am still working on getting some justice and would love for all people who have experienced serious long term bullying in Australian schools to work together to make change. Also want to challenge the teachers federation who were complicit in the whole problem because as I was told in no uncertain terms, represented the principal too. I WAS ADVISED BY MY UNION CASE MANAGER TO RETIRE IF I WISHED TO FINISH MY CAREER WITH DIGNITY. Please contact me via Facebook kerrinalaraineswords if you wish to join me in communicating with the Australian Education Union re the lack of support for teachers being harassed and bullied.

You are describing what happened to me! YES, IT HAPPENS IN SCHOOLS TO DEDICATED PROFESSIONALS WHERE WE TEACH CHILDREN!!! Absolutely sickens me to this day. But I recognized what was going on and left....but not before I lost over 30 pounds and still suffer from symptoms of PTSD and sleep deprivation....STILL! And that has been almost 10 years ago! Pathetic cowards!

Kerrina Swords+ Welcome to England the home of bullies ! It's everywhere. I work for the nhs and have the same problem. HR are there to support management, the Union are useless because the hospital pays their salary and Restructuring is being used as a tool to get rid of people the managers don't like. It's dog eat dog, sick and toxic atmosphere and that's just the nhs. Bullying is everywhere; look what happens in the House of Commons and how MPs bully one another and they are leading the country by example. ZERO TOLERANCE is the way to go, but unfortunately it is not happening. Welcome to England.

More than six years have passed since I was terminated from my position after 5 years of dealing with a multitude of attempts to discredit me by the "bully" and his entourage of stooges, saddest thing is they can be so good at their manipulation they can even convince the owners of companies.

This is a serious problem, but what's being done about it? Nothing...... I've lived this twice and it has destroyed my life. Who cares? No One...There is no integrity at the workplace. I was told that the company had a policy against harassment, but what good is it when the person who is suppose to report it, is apart of it. I can't even tell the truth in a interview about why I left my last job because I will be considered a trouble employee and they won't hire me. Where does the bullying end even when you are forced to leave? The answer, it doesn't....

+La Louloune I wish I could tell you it won't. What I will suggest is that you document everything that crosses your boundaries. Keep it at home and make sure you have dates and times and who was involved. It's also important to keep communication with supervisors in writing. Human Resources works for the company and that's why it's so important to be your own advocate. Never give them any information they can use against you. As long as they think they have the upper hand with the abuse they will continue it. Documentation is a very resourceful way of proving harassment to those who can help with this type of abuse. Until laws are passed where business are held accountable and penalized then workplace harassment will continue. Try not to allow it to consume your mind but be mindful and protect your rights. Wishing you the best.

My bully destroyed my career and even my ability to do most jobs. I had a huge case of PTSD. I'm glad that I'm finally retired but the effects stay with me even though I quit working for the bully in 2004. I still have dreams of being in that job and the constant fear I lived with every day. Back then. nobody knew what workplace bullying was. My bully was a judge elected by the county's voters and he had no oversight. There was little I could do. I tried but my union and the state administration refused to deal with the problem. At one point, I had a breakdown. Still, there was no remedy. When he sabotaged my attempt to transfer out, I knew I would never get away from him unless I quit. After I quit, he made sure nobody in the legal field would hire me. I became homeless, went on welfare, finally got a job making $8.00 an hour. And this guy is still on the bench.

I just went through a classic example of this on my job. inwasbgig recently promoted to an executive level position and had to face a known bully in the company. He bullied me and changed a company policy on interim positions at the company that had been one of the good things about working at this company. After he literally fired me, demoted me, and sent me back to my original position, I lodged a complaint with HR that got no results. HR acknowledged his behavior and basically told me thanks for bringing it to their attention so that they can keep it from happening to anyone else. This bully had his entire department brainwashed and afraid of him. What's so surreal is the fact that many people warned me about this person so people that have tenure there know about his shenanigans. I'm going to do myself a favor and just find a job with a better company...listening and viewing this video helps me digest this travesty and move on with my life and career. I advise anyone going through this to leave the company if HR doesn't do anything about the bully...

In my last role as Quality coordinator, I had to chair departmental management meetings.
I remember in one, the head of HR stated, that Head Office has mandated bullying and harassment training.
He emphasised that the only reason we needed to do it was to show "that we had done our bit" by providing the course. He also 'jokingly' said to one of the Managers (who was a bully) that it didn't apply to him.
There was nothing about making the work place safer and less toxic.
Sure enough, after the training was done, this (bully) Manager, would still continue to make unnecessary personal insults (weight/appearance) about other people (not in the room), whilst the other Managers laughed along with him.

I have been reasonably successful reaching Director level in a multi-national IT company. But over the years I have been subjected to bullying and at times quite outrageously appalling behaviour. I recently led a major programme on behalf of a Global Bank. One of the Bank's senior management commented to my boss how impressed they were that I maintained my calm and decorum in the face of "outrageously provocative behaviour". This was standard practice. It should be said that I do have significant seniority and I saw outright bullying of Bank staff that I could do nothing about.
This is more than a few Corporate Psychopaths. This is endemic behaviour that is characteristic of the institutions of corporate capitalism, and the power relationship that is wage labour. Until these are addressed this will continue.

I am being bullied by my rental agency, they are (I believe) harassing me into moving out. They poisoned my dog, I get notices all the time of fabricated lease violations that I have made. They have made me into the villian and gone so far as to say if I complain about the bully once more, they will evict me. She lives below me, creates noise all day and often far into the night, when I would like to be asleep. I am a nervous wreck, have PTSD symptoms, and sometimes don't leave my apartment for weeks. I will leave this wretched place as soon as I can. When I think of complaining to her boss, I am reminded of an old Swedish saying I once heard: "A fish rots from the head down."

One of the comments made raises a major point here; in our worthy pursuit of making more opportunity available to more people, several protected classes have been created, and all too often, these become safe refuges from which unscrupulous thugs can lash out at accomplished, decent employees with impunity, often with support from management, sometimes unwittingly, but often in a collusive fashion. While it's understandable that the pendulum could have been expected to swing too far in the other direction, it's well past time that management not only recognized the problem, but took remedial action. The fact that they often decline to do so tells me that to some extent, they support this agenda...that is why there is so much emphasis on enforcing silent compliance...

When HR wants to watch employee doing misconduct they watch them, but when HR doesn't want, they don't do it. If they put a camera there, they would have to fire many people. I have been quite lucky in my working life in that I have only ever struck one person that I would call a bully. I observed him target a number of people in the office that I worked with relentless bullying. I was lucky in that the bully did not target me - often. It is the biggest regret of my working life that I did not stand beside the victims and call the bully out and then support the victims and go with them to senior management or to HR to support their side of the story, to bear witness to the crime. There were reasons I didn't - I was a temp and could have lost my job very easily or I could have become a target of the bully - but on reflection the reasons were insufficient when compared to the victim's situation. I swore that I would not repeat the same mistake if I ever came across the same situation in a future job.

    Hello,
I use to work for a community bank in NJ for almost 12 years. During that time I was promoted to a Head Teller position. Everything started off very nicely however as I got to know my branch manager I realize that they had no interest in helping me grow in my position nor assist me in my pursuit to make a career. I was constantly bullied, reprimanded and accused of things that I either did not say nor do it. From that point I did approach human resources and I asked to step down as a head teller. From that point it seemed that the company was targeting me to push me out. Watching your speech lecture it really touched very close to home because I know how it feels to feel like there’s no way out and that you’re trapped. In my final years at the company I was fortunate enough to find a new employment which I’m currently at now and much happier. I’m given the opportunity to progress and grow. Not all jobs are perfect there are some things I wish that were better at my current employment however I do feel I have the capability and liberty to either stay and progress or move on to something better without feeling hopeless. I think this lecture is a very big wake up call to all of the companies throughout the country and world, that it’s important that employers treat employees fairly. It’s a shame that bullying and promoting hostile environments are condoned and rewarded. I witnessed this throughout the time of my previous employment at the community bank that I worked for. To anyone that’s experiencing any bullying at their current job there’s always a way out and there’s always help available. Talk to someone, bring it to the surface and be vocal. You have the right to be heard.

The one she bully has her contract renewed despit what she had done now is even more enpowered and making lots lots of people miserable at work. Again and again people has complained, people has left , people has gone sick and back and sick again and new entieusastic new worker soon got disallutioned of the project . This one she bully so being supported by the head! Is just crazy! Our family tugged along with my husband for his job and the time we had been here, it was difficult for all of us as a family, while his constand stand to his own integrity, we felt not only helpless but also we had to witness a person in pain day in and day out. We were a family in name. Our marriage was also in trouble due to his work this lead to confusion amongst our children and it hurt them too. Children then left after school and we were left just with each other. I since became a therapist and this has help us to stay together. But I do dread to think what our children must have gone through and how much impact this human unkindness might have affected them.
I agree totally that bullying is being supported by management. sooooo true.
There are lots of unhappy people around but bullies are the most unhappiest ones I have ever seen.

The two situations I've ran into is either, management (including HR) in collusion with the bully, or management being afraid of them.

In Singapore bullying and Psychopath is at NTUC supermarket. They have a facebook where customers who are not happy with staff upload their photos..... These customers are cowards and encouraged by organisation. 🐕. They should be charged with slandering. 💰💰💰And the staff be compensated.

I wonder if most of these bullies are psychopaths, and the like. These .,.. people like to get into power positions of authority and once they are in that vantage point they become the great one. Someone no one questions. So they are capable of great harm. especially when they aline their forces against you. My line of thinking is that they pick out their target and go after them. They don't stop till they cause great harm, and they just continue to move on to the next victim until hopefully SOMEONE, SOME HOW stops them.

Third one of these on this topic I've watched and all the same. A detailed description of the bully, what makes them tick, the damage to the corporation, the emotional trauma of the victim's and validation that it's just not right. BUT not one despite the titles actually gives you hands-on, one on one interpersonal defense tactics.

How do we end this problem? What group can I join to support ending workplace bullying? This has to end. No one should be treated like this anywhere, even their place of work. A few months ago, after reporting a toxic workplace to HR, i was let go due to
“Workplace reduction”- I am doing what I can to fight it, but this is wrong. It is wrong that there is no recourse for the person who is bullied. I went through everything mentioned in this video. How can we end this??

"You clocked in five minutes early, how dare you"! "Go in there, don't go in there. How dare you defy me and not go in there to do your job". These are the games they play. I always go beyond my duties to serve customers - regardless of how bad bullies behave. They write one sided lies about me
so I can sue for slander.
I contacted Corp and complained. There is a record now about the bullies behavior. I am a senior and know how to handle this. God is my pilot, so no worries, just forgiveness.
