Dog Training With Layered Shaping: Why Classical Conditioning Must Come First

  • The way we dog train is different, and there are four elements that are vital to everything we do. It starts with confidence for people and their dogs and layers to grow a relationship of trust. There are many ways to use reinforcement in dog training, and our focus is on layered shaping, which might be a new concept for many people. I’m pulling back the curtain on how and why we build intentional layers of learning to set dogs up for success.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • That the vast majority of people start wanting to know how to stop their dogs from doing things.
    • Why our first step is creating a positive conditioned emotional response for dogs, so they feel good.
    • That behaviour does not happen in an unemotional vacuum, and we want good emotions.
    • How we want to minimize, and ideally eliminate, a conflict between people and their dogs.
    • Why to use the things your dog loves in your training.
    • That our dogs have a fun life, but we want to be aware of where they earn reinforcement.
    • About turning a dog’s distractions into white noise.
    • How we want to begin with our dogs doing simple things and follow the 5C Pyramid.
    • About using games that change our dog's physiology so they can be in their zone of genius.
    • That once we've established value for our dogs, we want to transfer that value.
    • Why our dogs want to do what we want because we empower them with choice.
    • How we use classical conditioning first, so the bond between dogs and people is one of trust.

What this means to me, is another layer of clarity. I am one of your students and when I saw this episode from the first time, way back before I was one of your students (over a year ago now I think), it was a lot to take in! But now, after doing crate games (AMAZING COURSE!), and Home School the Dog, and Pedicure Please, and now in Recallers and H360 - it all makes wonderful sense, and still, every podcast, every time I re-watch a lesson, I pick up on another point because I see how it relates to the next layer that we are working on. It gets more and more rewarding and more fun the more we go along. Thank Dog for you Susan Garrett! Brilliant stuff! Xxxxxxx Much love and hearts! :) Xxxx and paw prints :) Xxxxxx

Having taken Homeschool for the dogs etc, this is such great comprehensive summary of your approach. I can honestly say that the layered training you teach put the fun and happy back into “training”. The benefits encompass so much more than just training. Personally, I have found your approach not only transformative for dogs, but also for me. It’s so encouraging and a joy to see the dog in front of me eager to play “games”, and not shutting down or bolting to escape a training session.

Thanks for everything you put out there! Been binge-watching your podcast and joined the recallers program throughout the last week to quickly turn things around with our 12 week old puppy. He's doing great but I was growing frustrated with myself for always reprimanding and correcting behavior he really doesn't know or understand - and seeing both the stress and unwanted coping behaviors that created.
Now all I need is a little patience, persistence and that "Leash Blower" Power Tool

My 6 month old standard poodle puppy and I are Homeschool students-- we're about to venture into our first conformation shows and transferring values has been just wonderful!
He loves being groomed, he loves being on the grooming table, he loves standing stacked... we are set up for success and I'm so grateful. ❤
We did have an IYC fail the other day-- I gave him permission to "go sniff" and he bee- lined and grabbed a dead snake 😅
But was it really a fail when I didn't know it was there but we'd been working right next to it for a good 10 minutes and I'm sure he knew it was there the whole time and never disengaged to go get it until released?

I signed up for crate games so maybe this will all make more sense after I do hands on with my dogs, but there are like a thousand bits here and it isn’t clear the step by step process. 😢
I’m trying to figure this out but not sure I can. There were half a dozen other videos recommended, and in them, more video suggestions. It’s SO MUCH information. I guess I need a simple “Start Here, learn this so you can teach it to your dog; now move on to this” approach. I’m overwhelmed.

    • @DogsThat

Hi, in this episode, Susan explains about how and why we build intentional layers of learning to set dogs up for success. But your Crate Games site includes very specific step-by-step training that you can follow with your dog for great success. Other episodes have step-by-step training, if you share what you are looking for, we are happy to point you in the right direction. Thanks for commenting!

Dear Susan, thank you so much, this is a great and helpful dive into the structure and framework of your training programmes 🤩 I’m a student in Recallers and so a bit acquainted with these layers, and yet listening to you describe and explain the concepts this way adds further clarity and understanding, thank you!
I’m an early career dog trainer 😃 and a studying to become a certified dog behaviouralist (all in German and Italian speaking contexts only) , and I’d love to implement as much as I can your framework and philosophy in the work with my students. Do I understand correctly, this is something you would allow and encourage (trainers bringing your games and approach to their students? Of course acknowledging the source).
One more unrelated question, triggered from your slalom game with Tater at the end of this video 😅: could you please prepare a podcast addressing how you go about fading out target prompts in training? You have already podcasts about shaping targets, but I find for many people me included the question on when and how to get rid of the target prompt is a tricky and challenging aspect. A podcast on this would be a great addition to the target stick/pivots etc episodes and deeply appreciated - thank you so much for sharing all this invaluable wisdom with us all! ❤️🐶

Hi @Elena Alessandri thank you for your lovely note! We've noted the suggestion for an episode, and it's a great idea. The question about fading would be great to ask in Recallers as well (the community forum in Recallers Chat would be a great place) 💙

I love this postcast. Really helpfull. I got my puppy so far that she can stay 2 feet from a bird (pigeon) without chasing her. She will still stay and stare at them but if I ask her to follow me or to come she will. Now she started to chase after shadows. I still didn't find a way to stop that as the shadows will keep moving. I am trying to interrupt the behavior with a treat, or play a game but as soon as we are finished, she starts again. What should I do?

I have not had this experience with dogs that I have personally worked with. What would you tell these owners?

I'm from the Netherlands so I hope my English is sufficient. But I wonder how you apply this method with my young dog (8 months) and my 4 year old dog. My young dog bites the old one all day. The old one corrects but it doesn't impress. So now I help him and correct myself, but I would like to see it differently. I've tried everything but I haven't been able to stop it yet. It seems to me that I should not wait until the youngest dog realizes itself (it's your choice) that biting does not yield anything.

OMG! I have the same problem. Tried to have the good things come through mummy by having her hand touch before giving permission to play with the older dog. However, the environment is not set for success because I am in a multi-dog PARENTS household. The older border collie belongs to my aunt, who went through all of Susan’s classes many times. However, my aunt is not interested in helping me create an environment for success for my pup. She’ll allow her dog to enter my pup’s environment and call me to stop my pup from messing up her BC’s fur. So half the time, I can’t ensure that the reinforcement (playing with older dog) comes through me. Hope you have better luck controlling your environment!

Novice dog trainer… I would love to learn more shaping. Which one of your on-line courses should I start with? I have a 3 year old Australian shepperd… I am taking a dog training course in Portugal, we use a lot of luring to teach dog owners of course. I recognize in my dog some of the issues you covered about luring because I trained her first with luring and she so dependent on the food to do something… she would do anything if i have food on my pocket but if I dont the motivation to work goes away… if she doesnt see food she wont work for much time. In Agility classes is different… she is motivated (too much) as soon we arrive the Agility field. Sometimes she is so excited she doesnt think 😢
