Why Your Dog’s Emotions Are A Critical Element Of Dog Training

  • Having coached thousands of people in dog training, I’ve observed that their dogs seem to fall into three categories. The dogs who seem to hate training sessions, the dogs who are so over the top about the training they are frantic, and the dogs who are driven and focused and absolutely love it. It’s not the breed of dog or their personality that determines the category, and it’s not the trainer or trainer’s experience; it’s about understanding you’re not only training a behavior but also an emotion.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    • That your dog’s emotions get built into what you are training.
    • What “Pavlov is Always on Your Shoulder” means.
    • What compulsion trainers get wrong about a dog's emotions.
    • How to gauge your dog's emotional state for training.
    • My top 7 tips to help your dog love training with you.
    • Observations on why dogs leave work or get distracted easily.
    • The reason to know competing reinforcements in your dog's environment.
    • Why not to keep going at half speed because half speed is an emotion.
    • About keeping dog training sessions very short and using balance breaks.
    • About getting “buy in” from your dog before training begins.
    • That your dog is also teaching you, so believe them.

OMG Susan you have completely changed my training. I have a new JRT puppy (5 months) and have been listening to your podcasts for the first time. Maggi is so excited and thinks everything is a game. Her recall game is at 100 mph and she is soooo excited to do the hand touch game as well as targeting with a fly swatter and wooden spoon. I have been working with its your choice and crate games and it is a joy to train a dog like this. I previously had another JRT and Tippy was never quite as engaged as Maggi and I can see such a difference. I love the small slices approach and always believe your dog. There is absolutely no stress or anxiety when we train. You are a treasure and I am working through so many back Podcasts. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Ha - this makes me feel GREAT!! I’ve got an 11 month old husky and everyone says ‘ oh no.. you can’t train a husky, they won’t listen, you can’t ever let them off leash, they do what they want….etc etc’ My experience is that you have to adapt their training to suit their independent personality. It’s Yer Choice has been the best course I have ever experienced for husky training….because that’s exactly what they respond to. They hate being told what to do. They are only stubborn if you present something that isn’t interesting enough to them. It’s never going to be a traditional click and obey relationship. Let them feel their decision is their idea and make sure your are THE most exciting thing in their world. If he is getting amped up because he’s seen other dogs in the park and he wants to play….jeez I have to run round the park like a 6 year old without a care in the world because I have to be more fun than that!
So many people have commented how well behaved he is when we are out and about……”especially for a husky” while other more popular breeds are running round out of control, getting in trouble, ignoring their recalls. And my boy comes right back!! Will sit, stay, lie down then look at me as if to say “ why are all those dogs being so naughty mum?”😂
It’s not 100% , but those days it’s not are always when I’ve had a bad day, or when I’m stressed, or when I am rushing him.
Listen to Susan everyone - this stuff works 😂🙏❤️

Hello Susan and gang! My first dog was only interested in training in spurts. I realize now that it was ALL on me not knowing the steps. Sessions were either too long, or I would pick a time that was good for me and never considered that he was snoring 2 mins before the “session”. The old school mentality of “he’s stubborn and you’ve got to assert yourself more etc” would shut him down and he’d go off sniffing. I now know that we were both doomed from the start because of my approach and techniques. He was only excited with other people or if I got a puzzle out, because I was more relaxed then and having fun with him. I have learned so much with your positive layered training! It’s so good to finally see the enthusiastic and engaged dog I always wanted to see in front of me now. Happy and giving me those physical signs of enjoyment and eager to “play” more!

My italian greyhound had an incident at a dog show that set her on a major fearful path. I have been a recaller for several years but cant afford to continue at this time. I have continued to follow susan on you tube. My focus for hazel has been to build her confidence. I have changed hazels diet and that has made a big difference for her. Its a year now since the incident that changed her. Following susan has made such a difference to hazel and her return to the show ring this weekend was amazing. She was so confident and won best of breed in a very strong competitive class. Some day i will return to recallers but for now thankyou so much for your podcasts

    Such good info
    Thank u .
I have done some of these things for years years it just felt right
My thinking has always been if it doesn’t feel right to me , isn’t logical, makes no sense I’m not doing . Don’t care who is telling me how much I may have paid for the info
When my dog isn’t happy working , I would stop ask myself why
    If they aren’t happy . I’m not happy !
I would get a lot of odd looks . So thank you , I’m not as nutty as others thought I was

My dog is definitely a distracted by EVERY dog, person, and animal that we pass. The cue Pupp pupp puppy I'd finally starting to work to break the hyper focus but the moment she gets to me she turns back around to stare at the distraction!

Thanks yet again Susan. This is what I needed to hear! Played it a few times today. I've heard you say all this before, but I definitely needed reminding. My sessions have gotten too long. I wasn't taking enough balance breaks. Everything is in slow motion. This video and the "Woo" video - stressing about my dog's stress; listened to them a few times today to remind myself of my own emotions impacting my dog, to get myself into the right mindset first, and then to get that buy in and enjoyment back into our sessions. He's a sensitive soul who has had no exposure outside of his last house and yard, so he's finding his new world and life somewhat confronting / overwhelming. I love that he's such a sensitive boy, because when he trusts me, it just makes be burst with happiness. There's been some tears though too when I've struggled to find a way to help him and to change to become the trainer he needs me to be. But we are getting there, and absolutely, the guidance within this podcast and the reminders to stay present as well as getting his buy-in, keeping up those balance breaks and shortening the sessions to build back his enthusiasm will all help. Thank you. Today I am grateful for YOU and for that week many years ago when you travelled all the way to Uralla in Australia and turned my training upside down and improved my relationship with all my dogs ever since. My newest boy is giving me some struggles but together we are learning new things together like the trust technique, and thankfully I was listening/ believing him enough to come back in here today to revisit these basic foundations that I've been getting lax with. Namaste.

I loved Tater in this video. I totally related to your message. My Annie loves all of your games inside. But with generalized anxiety and neophobia, we are working on really basic skills outside, like the snuffle mat game and a long list of relaxation behaviors in 12 succeeding lessons. She loves the snuffle mat game. But I believe I made the mistake of doing the relaxation protocol game following a 1/2 hour of snuffle mat. Annie totally lost interest and wandered off her hot zone mat. Didn't want to pay any attention. So we packed up and went back inside. Doing the shorter sessions and not doing the relaxation protocols last makes sense.

In 1982 I had 2 Shelties; one was my parent's dog first and the other I chose as an obedience dog. I didn't know about CER but I did observe the difference in the drive of both dogs. I did a bit of balance breaks and realize now I trained too long for the one dog. I learned early that even though they appeared to be the same they had very different needs. That helped me with raising kids too.😉 Always believe the dog. 😁

When we rescued our current dog, we were not prepared (and the shelter didn’t inform us) of some of his behavior issues. We found a trainer, paid a lot of money, and it worked- for a while. But we struggled to keep up with the training because we were taught to train with an e-collar, which we never felt good about using. So his behavior slipped.
Which brings us to you! We’re committing to using only reinforcement based dog training and don’t want to bring any pain or fear our poor dog has felt any further into his journey than we have to. Some of his cues he has down really well from his old training, but after watching this, I’m afraid that they would be associated with fear. Should we switch cues, or how would you recommend ‘rehabbing’ our dog’s emotions when we train and use those familiar behaviors?

Interesting! This episode made me realise something. My bc is way more focused and driven when training outside compared to inside. I can do a 45+ good session outside no problem. Inside 15-20 min maybe and the session will half the time end in her disengaging. Probably because the balance breaks and rewards I give outside are way more exciting to her compared to those inside. Chasing ball and running free vs some treats or a short game of thug. Room for improvement for sure.

This video helped me realize how long my training sessions were! I've been trying to be patient and let my puppy think a little, but I can see now that the duration is too long and I'm expecting too much from the little guy. It's no wonder that he gets frustrated easily. The big question I have is *how* do you get buy-in from the dog? Is it just through multiple short training sessions, and getting the dog to think: "hey, this is fun?".

Just remember that you are learning on how to communicate with a different species. Communication goes both ways, and your dog is also trying the same thing. They are not humans and the more we understand their emotions the better companions they will become.
