Juvenile flying-fox in care, days 2 and 3: this is Foveaux

- Apologies, this video isn't particularly well aimed either; I've chopped out the really bad bits but left in the bits where the talk is critical and there is some vision.
Foveaux is a juvenile female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who is only 17 weeks old, which is quite young for this time of the year.
She crash-landed into an internal balcony area, unable to escape, just hooking her feet in the sliding door runners and waited for something to happen. This development complex wasn't quite ready for sale, and the workmen were there every day which meant she was found the morning after her crash.
She is only young, very inexperienced, and the architecture of the building is not particularly bat friendly; this area is a batty accident waiting to happen. I expect there will be other bats stuck in the same place sometime in the future.
Foveaux is a survivor though she's really stressed and anxious about what is happening to her. I couldn't decide if her unrelaxed and hunched legs were from an injury (spinal, pelvic or soft tissue) or just from stress.
I have to admit, when she's hanging with hunched legs she looks like she's a bit chubby, so she also acquired an extra name, Miss Podge.
YAY: I love survivors and she's definitely survivor material.
Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).

She is just all hunched up, not letting her legs relax, and it makes her look all round and podgy. She is a frightened little girl.🖤🇨🇦
It's just the way she's hanging - all hunched and with bent legs; she's only 20g above minimum healthy weight so she's in good condition and not overweight, but she's so hunched and unrelaxed she looks porky
Yay! Holding thumbs for this patient. I love watching you nursing these patients. I think it is the kind of nursing my mother did decades ago, around WW2. Making decisions, treating patients as individuals. Before the mechanistic, big business, insurance company controlled medicine became the norm.
At this stage, the insurance companies in Australia don't have veto on care. I spent 9 weeks in hospital a few years ago, half of them in intensive care.
I didn't pay a cent; my fund paid for the excess.
Australia is still (hanging by a thread) the lucky country.
@@Megabattie The danger is not so much veto on care, but dictating what care takes place - and that might even be over-servicing - or dictating the wrong care - nurses have resigned over it. It just seems as if other interests now speak louder than the direct care between patient and nurse. Not less care - but more care for more money - paid for by government or insurance companies. Even the doctor-patient relationship is no longer what it was, unless you can get a really old-style doctor.

My collection was sourced from op shops in the country (cheap as chips there); of course, they all have required liposuction, various repairs and all needed to be skinnier and softer and more limp.
I think we will appreciate the screamers' energy more in the future. Poor little mite. But she's still alive, so it's hopeful.
You might as well have a supply of stickers with you, Meg, when you go to buildings like that, detailing how to reach the bat carers line. Just a dreadful bat trap.

If I stuck a sticker anywhere they would remove it; these are new apartments and they like them to be uncluttered and minimalist.
If they get a bat I'll deal with it and they will know what to do the next time.

Glad you're kidding on the awful camera aim; either I wasn't thinking or I was using a different pair of glasses. And since I didn't look at the footage for a few days, I didn't realise I had it so badly aimed and continued aiming it the same (aiming isn't a science, I just guess (from experience) what the camera is aimed at).
I have about 3 pairs of mostly working vid glasses and a bunch of other ones which won't download to my editing computer and take forever to convert (so I don't use them).

IMO, word's gotten out about Adrien - what girl *wouldn't* want to see him? She is podgiest little bat ever! Is it possible some well-meaning soul has been feeding her? She doesn't seem to be the least bit afraid. Thank you for the follow up!
She has her legs all tensed up, not relaxed at all. That makes her look rounder in the body than she actually is. She is frightened with all that is happening to her, and it keeps her tensed up. Those legs are going to be sore when she finally decides it’s okay. Poor little one…but Meg will see her right.🖤🇨🇦
She's about the right weight (20g) over for her forearm length and just looks podgy because of her hunched legs and how she's not hanging long and loose.

Is she on Meloxicam/Meloxidyl for pain? My 11 1/2 year old Lab takes it for arthritis.
I don't use meloxicam for newly rescued bats; they're not well enough hydrated and it's hard on their kidneys. Bu the time they're rehydrated, they've gone to another carer and they generally don't need it.
Meloxicam is for inflammation and I don't know if she's got any inflammation anywhere; and since she's not really eating at this stage, I don't want her to get an irritated stomach

The first video explained her name. Foveaux from, Foveaux Street; it also means clear or direct vision; The fovea centralis, or fovea, is a small depression within the neurosensory retina where visual acuity is the highest
