    Let me know how you're all getting on! Are you growing Hyacinths and/or Paperwhites this year? How are they doing?

      Great update Niall, they have really come on and do show how each in different ways are growing.
      Yup i planted two after your video and got the bulb jars, i left them in the dark for a while, loved seeing the root formation, that was a treat in itself. The stalks are about the same as your first bulb jar one of the two. I have them on my kitchen windowsill now. Thanks for the idea of growing them that way,as only ever planted in pots.

      Ah super Lorraine! So heartening to know that you’re having success as well. The bulb jars are just so convenient to do, plus they’re REALLY convenient when it comes to getting rid of the spent Hyacinths! No old compost, no mess!

    Smart idea using things around your garden. I don't have a garden yet, am a container gardener. However, I happened to grow & collect orchids too, so I typically re-use my orchid supporters around some of my house & container plants.

      That's a great idea to reuse what you have, such as your orchid supports - good work!

    Wait to water paper whites with dilute alcohol until after the flower buds just emerge from the bulb, otherwise the alcohol may prevent flowering altogether.

    nice video Niall, I particularly like your confessions of not following your own advice. ha ha . I planted some hyacinths about a month after your video around the base of dragon tree I had just re-potted, and they've been in a cool bright room ever since. The shoots are about 2 inches high now , so we'll see . 4 delft blue and 2 white ones (don't know variety name)
    I did grow paper whites years ago, but found the scent so overwhelming I gave them to a neighbour (that I didn't like)
    Careful though, you are in danger of becoming the supporting act to that banana plant.

They are a bit further behind yours because I obviously planted mine later, but now I know I am gonna need some support twigs so I can look for some now and will be prepared when the daffodils need it. 😁. • @eclectic_housewife
    @eclectic_housewife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I need help! My husband bought me 4 for Valentine’s Day the flower shop had them in a nasty sand soil mix with no drainage. The leaves started looking sick so I emptied the pot. Soaked the bulbs in some peroxide cleaned off the mushy parts. Roots are white and healthy looking. My question is can I chop the leaves and set them above water and they will keep growing or do they now need to go into cold for awhile. It’s now hot here so I don’t have a cold room besides the fridge. They were so beautiful I don’t want to loose them.

    Absolutely love your videos. I need some guidance. I had hyacinths in the spring and put the bulbs in dark bags after they finished blooming. I live in Canada so my question is when should I start growing them considering that we don’t have enough sun between January and February. Would March be a good time? I would love them ready for Easter

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Sorry for the late reply. Yeah I think you could go with march. One thing to check with you though - if you've already grown them once indoors, are you planning to grow them indoors again? The reason I ask is that the prepared hyacinths really only perform well indoors once. After that, it's better to just plant them in the garden. The flowers are much much smaller in future years.

    Hello Niall, I really enjoy watching your videos. I live in the US. We live full time in our motorhome and travel around the country. I would love to try this. We are spending our winter in Arizona. I purchased 2 bags of paper whites. We do not have a shed to keep the bulbs. I have a few in a bowl on a windowsill that gets light but no sun. We really don’t have a lot of windowsills for the bulbs to sit on, due to the way we are parked. I would like to have them start growing now. It is about 60°F at night, and mid to high 80’s F during the day. It will get a little cooler in our winter months….high 30’s low 40’s at night, 60’s during the day. To get them to grow now, should I put them outside during the day in the sun? Do I leave them outside all night or bring them back into our RV? Do I need to store the bulbs I don’t want to grow yet, in my refrigerator? Thank you for your time and wonderful videos.

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll do my best for you AJ! The good news is that you're talking about paperwhites and they're really accommodating!! So... the bulbs can just happily be stored in a cool cupboard anywhere you fancy, so that bit's easy. Then, for growing them, I think that your windowsill you mention that gets light, but no sun, will be absolutely fine. The good thing is that they're basically pre-programmed to grow and flower, so they're incredibly tolerant. It might mean that they're just a little leggier and may need some extra support. You could certainly pop them outside during the day to get some rays, but I'd bring them back in at night. Hope this helps!

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would be inclined to pot the plants up in a pot of compost, or out in a flower bed. They should come back again next year outdoors for you! The flowers will be smaller, but still lovely!

    Hi Niall, thank you for your amazing tutorial. I love to grow bulbs inside of our home. I tried growing hyacinths indoor but their flowers did not come out of the leaves. Flowers opened up while they are low and down to the their bulbs. Did this also happen to your hyacinths? Do you know how I can prevent this problem?

    • @niallgardens
      @niallgardens  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're more than welcome - thank you! From my experience, if you're having that problem, it sounds like they needed longer in a cold, dark place. I'd say next year, when you place them somewhere cold and dark, make sure to keep them there until the shoots are about 5cm tall, then bring them indoors. That should fix your issue 😃
