Current instructor/former airline pilot here. Great job with the CFI teaching! I find the hardest part of teaching is patience. Having the patience to let students mess up without correcting them the 7th time they are doing the same maneuver. Patience I think is the hardest part of any flying job. Not just instructing. Keep up the great work! You’re a great CFI!
Hey man, I have been watching for a while now and just got my CFI in January and havn't had any super crazy experiences yet but did just solo my first student a week ago or so. It is an amazing feeling watching a student succeed.
Good stuff. My instructor would KILL me when I would say “add a little” “little bit more” what does that mean? Do you mean 20 degrees of bank or 60? What’s a little? CFI initial is definitely a handful but it makes you a very good pilot.
Bob is going to be a great and fun instructor when he becomes a CFI. Keep up the good work I love it! I wish I lived in the US so that I can get my discovery flight from lewis or bob when he becomes a CFI.
Fun video! Many, many years ago I was fortunate enough to be asked if I could be the out-of-control skydiving student for one soon-to-be-certified Accelerated Free Fall instructor. Tumbling and spinning, seemingly uncontrolled towards earth, completely unsymetrical, doing the opposite of what I usually did and being as unstable as possible, it was great fun. The instrctor dealt with it very well and hopefully he found it fun as well!
@@LewDixAviation Yes, and as in your video, it's really good to see how well people cope, but at the same time also see that they realise they are going to be challenged in ways they never would have imagined without your example. Look forward to the next one!
Such a great video and amazing to see the different perspective. I've still not gotten up the courage to ask my CFI when he knows when to jump in as we got into some squirrely landings so it is really eyeing opening to have to walk through the process as you did. Also young Bob quotes - "we are landing a plane" might just become a go to.
I just asked my CFI to give me some time in the right seat time to try some landings--file it under 'being a better safety pilot' category, I guess. (late instrument student, not quite ready for commercial or CFI yet!--that'd be cool, though!) Read my mind! thank you kind sirs.
I stated training last week, haven't been in command for landings yet, esp my last lesson where it was very windy out. But I've been told that I already have a good grasp of the basic (I've been using computer sims for some 25 years.)
Great video. Concise communication skills are premium. It takes time to develop the skill and the patience to allow your student learning opportunities. Flying from either seat will become natural. Good look on CFI pursuit.
Becoming a CRI right now, so going through some of this as well. This was stellar performance as a FI for the first time! It's so hard to process what goes on, convert it into teachable words and still make it work. Well done!
OMG too funny, this sooo hit home for me🤣 I just got my CFI done about 6 weeks ago & have been teaching ever since, it’s so different now seeing all the things new students do, I laughed waaayyy to hard at this. Keep up the good work Lew
Great video. Congrats Bob on the CPL, and I’m sure you’ll make a great CFI. I can see you’ll have great rapport with students just like Lewdix. Hope we still get to see young Bob appearing in videos.
So I am rewatching this video, and it's amazingly accurate, I mean the point where the student froze in the cruise climb... And I thought it was just me!!!
That was my favourite bit too. The second best bit was that akward moment where you cant really tell if the student is doing a high flare or half a go-around.
This is a good one. Nice work Lew. I like how you embodied the "Every Student" in that video. I've not only been the perpetrator of a few of those things when I was a student pilot, but I've also had the same experiences (i.e. moments of high adrenaline) with various students of my own as a CFI. :-) All part of the adventure of flying. Wouldn't trade it.
It's funny how similar this is to me teaching scuba diving. My instructor would regularly spit out his regulator and I thought he was being ridiculous but sure enough, one day I'm down at 40 feet with a discover scuba diver and this guy freaks out and starts pulling himself up the line to the surface and spit his regulator out. I had to shove it in his mouth, clear it for him (get all the water out of it) and hold him to the line to get him to calm down. He did it again on the way up and i did the same thing and finally he chilled out on the way up. thank god he was fine and i was too and glad i had a good instructor to run me through scenarios like that.
You're not as sarcastic as my CFI was , but a damn close second. I showed up for my discovery flight well prepared and did the takeoff minus rudders and flew the large pattern and did all the throttle and flaps and decent and then asked a dumb question. I said "you want me to land this"? He turned to me and deadpan stared at me for like 5 seconds and replied "well you have 12 minutes experience in a Cherokee , you figure you're ready"? Followed by "My Controls". It was basically that sense of humor for the rest of my training and a great contributor to my successes.
Lewdix x CFI training = 😂😂 Lewdix x Young Bob = 😂😂 Lewdix x CFI training x Young Bob = 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 There’s definitely some chemical in these combinations. Great video!
im starting my cfi flight training next week and im so excited cant wait. the worst part is im currently working on my tail wheel but cfi in a tri cycle lol
I can’t imagine students banking like hell on their first flights, I admit I was scared shitless of the plane when I first started training. It was like 8 hours before i finally started getting comfortable with maneuvering.
Had a guy on a discovery flight yank the controls back to his chest and held it there, paralyzed in fear. Had to be forceful with him to get him off the controls. It happens.
I remember when he was just getting his PPL with kevin and look at him now! Good deal on his commercial. Had some stress and financial issues come up last summer stopping me from completing mine. I'm still on the fence about wanting to go CFI as I own my plane but I always hear it's good to get. I sure hope we don't lose you once you join the new airline world, it will be a sad day:( sniffles Just go make them laugh and have tons of fun on the next step of your aviation career!
Wonder if Australians/British people have it easier, since we drive on the correct side of the road in motor vehicles and stuff so we can have our swords drawn at any minute with our dominate hand. Handy in cars and planes really these days.
One of my first students had all the requirements and finally got his medical approved so he just needed some refresher after 7 months. I figured he could land a plane just fine. MISTAKE! I didn't have my feet near the rudders and wasn't ready to take over. I kid you not he gets to the flare and goes full back pressure and is using right aileron to maintain centerline. In a split second I had to take over and do a go around. Closest I've been to disaster and now I'm more adherent regardless of a students skills
Another great video Lew! Missed you at Sun n' Fun, but I did speak with Gareth at the Foreflight booth! One of these days we need to do some Cirrus flying!
It's crazy how watching this I'm laughing and realizing this is exactly what my instructor had to go through with me when I was starting out
Haha we’ve all been there
This video shows me how much of a pain I am to my CFI. Good lord I don't think I could ever CFI. Requires patience of a saint.
I like the acting. You blew it when you laughed. It's very funny because all of us make the same crazy mistakes.

Just having passed my cfi ride it’s comforting to know the landing with side load is a normal struggle when switching seats

It took me FOREVER to be able to land from the right seat. Now I prefer flying from the right seat 😅

Thanks man!
Flew from the right for the first time today (working on my cfi) and my flight was identical to this 😅
My instructor always had a paper chart and fold it up and cover the panel up forcing you to look outside if you spent too much time looking down!
Do you still take on new students? Would love to come down and work with you on checkride prep!!
Hey, I'm in town. Any chance I could drop in for a discovery flight?
I’m gone for a while unfortunately. Sorry about that.
@@LewDixAviation Catch ya on the flip. Been in Florida a day and I'm moving.
Wondering if it’s even possible to switch seats during private or commercial training so that either seat feels safe????
If Young Bob is still struggling with the side-loading, tell him to align the lines on the cowling with the centerline and it'll get much easier.
About to finish my group training for CFI, have any tips for the flight training portion / checkride?
Ground training… autocorrect!!
No welcome to the sky on take of ? Still need some work as a CFI ;-)

I sent this to my CFI. Sorry for any brown spots in your pants Ryan!!!
I thought 30deg turns were standard on pattern
As I said, no more than 30 degrees
Now I'm curious why you can't do his CFI training. Is it because of scheduling or because of regs?
Probably scheduling/life stuff. I don't know of any regulatory reason they couldn't do it with each other.
might be bec of regs as well to instruct an initial cfi applicant, you must hold your cfi license for atleast 24months
@@AppleMatrixGaming he's been a cfi for way longer than that though
It’s probably because he’s leaving for the airlines
Cmon where are you going?
you should have landed the plane so he could get a site pitcher of a good landing from the right seat!

you are a bad student. LOL
