    My first instructor would NOT get off the controls. At about 16 hours I realized this and also realized that I had no clue how to land the airplane. I got a different instructor who left for the airline after helping me start to understand things better. My new instructor makes me do all of it. It's great! The weather has been lousy lately, so not much flying. But he insists that my checkride is imminent!

      I had this experience. He kept saying my landings were good so I thought damn I’m pretty good at this flying thing. when he finally left to Colorado and was assigned a new instructor, I porpoised the landing and my maneuvers sucked! Soooo frustrating because it was a waste of money! I’m grateful for the instructors I had after my first one, where I spent about 20 hours as a passenger. I have my Private now and working on instrument

      Very cool! My instructor is pretty sharp so he's covered up with instrument students for the next two months. I'm gonna have to use another instructor just for a few more trips in the pattern and then I'll be ready to get the 10 hours of solo time done. Then touch up with maneuvers and schedule the big day.

      Good job that you changed instructors. The “let me show you” instructors are a waste of your money and time. In 1500 hours of instruction given, I’ve taken the controls to show and have them “feel” with me, if they weren’t getting it quick enough with me talking them through it. Probably 9 out of 10 students never saw me fly, ever.
      So good for you.

    We used ALAP a bit during my early training as a decent VFR scan.
    Atitude (make sure the horizon is where we want)
    Lookout (look in the direction where we are climbing/turning)
    Atitude (make sure the horizon is where we want)
    Performance (scan your instruments to make sure they match what the outside is telling, you, pick and choose your instrument to scan based on what you are doing, eg climbing speed, VSI, RPM)

    This video gives me so much joy. Currently working on ground and written prep for my CFI and watching this helps demystify what the journey will be like

    I'm so happy you posted this video. I'm at the very end of my Commercial Multi training, getting ready for CFI......this video does a great job of showing how difficult the transition is. During commercial, I did a dual flight with another student, and I got a little teaser of flying in the right seat....and let me tell you, just taxiing, something theoretically simple, is a challenge. I'm really looking forward to the transition and learning how to coach someone with zero hours to first solo's and licenses. Keep up the great uploads, they keep getting better and better!

    Wow! This video is amazing! Gives me confidence to be a flight instructor too. I always wondered how that is teaching someone how to fly the plane.

    In my former flight school, CFI trainees go through intense training from their CFIs because their CFIs really act like unskilled students like for example, they will suddenly yank the yoke during approach, and the CFI trainees need to do something about it.

    2:43 that's a bit of a macho attitude right there. I'm not sure if you threw that in to get his reaction, but it's something a CFI should be stamping out

    Lewis, I absolutely love your content. It always seems to be timely for what I have going on in my flying life. I have decided to pull the trigger on CFI and will be beginning training soon. I would like to get your thoughts on a couple of apprehensions that give me pause. I am currently at about 400 hours, but I still am not a big fan of flying on gusty days (specifically when it's variable) or turbulent days, and no matter how much I try to convince myself otherwise, I still do not like power on stalls. Or really any stalls to the break. Just not a fan. Additionally, I also consider that at only 400 hours total time, there is still a TON that I don’t know. I want to be the best instructor that I can be. A professional pilot friend of mine says that being an active CFI will likely correct all of this for me. Thanks in advance!

    • @LewDixAviation
      @LewDixAviation  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey man. I'm glad you enjoy my content! That means a lot. I'm with your friend on this one. In my time as a CFI I've learned more that I think I ever did before I started instructing. The quest for knowledge and finding new ways to teach things really opened up my mind and stretched my skill level a lot and made me so much more comfortable with things in the aircraft. It will do the same for you, I'm sure. I have apprehensions about spins. They are something that I don't like doing even to this day, but as a CFI you have to know the ins and outs and the aerodynamics of a spin. That knowledge gives me the comfort and strength to do them even though I don't like to. The reason I'm telling you that is because when I'm doing them, my body is telling me "this is the end" haha. But my brain knows better because I've loaded it with knowledge. I hope that all makes sense.

    • @christophermetcalf4720
      @christophermetcalf4720 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LewDixAviation That all makes perfect sense. I am definitely looking forward to the growth that I am sure will come with this process. I guess if I really think about it, my adversion to stalls is more about an adversion to spins. I have done spins with an instructor, but didn't get the endorsement as I was still a student pilot then. I know that I can get out of one because of that training. Still not looking forward to doing it again for the endorsement, but I am sure I will survive. Thanks for the insight. Keep doing what you are doing and inspiring those of us that have no desire to go to the airlines!
