Fixing a dead Optiplex 7020 Dell

  • All this thing would do once a hard drive was hooked up was blink 15 or 16 times. If the hard drive was unplugged it would run just fine even to the point of booting Linux from a USB. Simple fix but shows, again, the power of a good visual inspection.

    Sometimes simple problems are hard to find! Especially when someone else has been in there before you. I never have liked Dell computers, they have a long history of doing weird and/or flaky things like that power connector on the motherboard.

    H man im straggling with my computer. It was working fine suddenly after power failure. Doesn't want to go on but the boad is light. No fan spinning. On pc board and power supply. But if I press small button behind the Power supply fans will spin and DVD Rom will light up and hard drive will run. Soon I release it everything went off again. Is dell optiplex 980

    • @AERVBlog

      That usually means there is a short somewhere. Disconnect all drives, cd/DVD, floppy if you have one and take all the extra boards out. Then try to start it. If it starts you have a bad component if not the motherboard might be bad or it has bad caps. You can try removing memory too and see if it will at least beep or flash the led.

    Hello I need some help my dell optiplex 7010. When I turn on my pc it doesn't show any beeb or light led but fan is still working. And when I touch button to power supply sometime it's working and dead again.. And what happened to my pc was not showing up any beeb and light. How to fix that?

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there are no lights at all then I would suspect that one of the voltages from the power supply is gone or the motherboard is truly shot.

      @AERVBlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it is blinking yellow it is probably a bad motherboard. If it is solid it is probably the power supply. Listen to the power supply closely when you turn it on and see if you can hear it squeal a little and then go silent. If so pull all the cards out and disconnect all drives. Try to turn it on again. If it works reinstall each thing one at a time till it won't start. The last piece is shorted. If the computer does not start barebones then the power supply or motherboard is bad.

    Hello, do you know what to do if a Dell Optiplex 755 desktop computer turns on but then on the screen it says “Your PC has ran into an problem...” and it resets by itself and then goes to automatic repair but your mouse and keyboard won’t type? I called Dell technical assistance but they don’t want to help me because I don’t have the newer models of their computers

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What kind of mouse and keyboard do you have? Is it wireless? Those might not work before it boots up. They should but I have seen them fail on pre windows screen. Your error usually means that some DLL or system file did not load right. Sometimes you can just reboot and it will fix itself. If you have a wired keyboard, either USB or old fashioned plug try using that.

    • @keving.6163
      @keving.6163 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AERVBlog the keyboard and mouse are wire and they would when the computer turns on but all of a sudden, when the computer says “Automatic repair” it gives you an option of “Restart” or “Advanced Options” But I’m not sure why the computer shuts off power to the USB ports and it’s not letting me log in

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keving.6163 Can you get to the advanced options menu? If so you could try to do a system restore just in case the latest update failed or somehow messed up your computer. Failing that you could do a complete reinstall but that would lose all your data and programs. I don't think you need to log in on that screen.

    • @keving.6163
      @keving.6163 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AERVBlog Well it’s okay if I lose all my computer data and everything but I just want to try to get my computer back to working position and when it does the automatic repair, it gives me options after that but for some reason, it disables my keyboard and mouse when it does that but when I turn it on, I could only use my keyboard for F2 and F1 and then it sends me to a set up, but it’s okay if my only option is to reset the whole computer, I just need to know how to do that

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Octavio_Jorge If the fans start to spin but then stop it usually means that the power supply is crow-barring meaning it is seeing a large current draw, like a short, and shutting down. Start by disconnecting everything from the power supply except the motherboard and turn it on. If it does start then hook the peripherals up one at a time till it will no longer start. The last thing you plugged in is the culprit. If it won't start with just the motherboard hooked up then it is most likely a bad motherboard. Good luck.

    Basically I put in extra ram into mine and it started orange flashing on the power button so I took them out and it turned on for a second then went completely dead, no power what do ever, not even on the mother board or anything, and it isn’t the cable

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      At this point you are going to have to have a meter to check voltages. See if there is anything at all on that plug. With the unit just plugged in there should be a 5V standby somewhere. It is used to turn the computer on when you press the soft on/ Offswitch.. If you can't find that then you have a short somewhere or a dead power supply. Good luck. Thanks for watching.

      @Digital World that sounds like a power supply problem. Is there a little push-button on the back close to the power cord ?

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Digital World start by taking all extra cards out of the machine and all but one of the ram. Disconnect the HD and CD power then try to turn it on. The idea is to find out what device is shorting out the power supply. Hopefully it is not the motherboard itself. And carefully inspect all the capacitors, they look like little cans on the motherboard, for leakage or bulging at the top where the little crump marks are. If you have any bulging capacitors you will probably need a new motherboard.

    • @AERVBlog
      @AERVBlog  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Digital World No. Do not wash your motherboard. Did you try disconnecting all the drives and CD as well as take out the extra boards? It is beginning to sound like a bad motherboard and there isn't much you can do about that. Sorry I can't be of more help.

      If there are no lights or beeps or anything I would check the power supply first. It sounds like your 5V is missing. Of course it could be shorted somewhere. Take all extra cards out, disconnect hard drive and DVD and see it boots to bios. If it does connect one thing at a time until it quits booting.
