I own a PC repairs shop and NEVER throw away working parts. I often come across old machines that have become a bit tired with age but, with a few tweaks, will turn into perfectly functional machines.
Trade-ins are a joy to work on, as they just need a good blast with a leaf blower, fformat and reinstall which makes them good as new. Pensioner love them, as they can Skype the kids in Aus, Canada or wherever.
I don't make lots of money at it but to see the satisfaction of an old machine in the hands of someone who just wants a cheap PC is a joy in of itself.

Agreed. Just got a 9020 USFF. Dropped a 120gb SSD in there. Got the cd caddy - so put a second HDD in there (500gb). It's the i3 version (4th gen I THINK). Currently just waiting on an 8gb stick of memory to arrive (Saturday) as I've got 4gb in anyway and 12Gb for my needs is more than enough.
My previous laptop ran 8gb - zero issues.
I run Linux and it does all music production with no dramas.
Not bad for a sub £100 computer 🙂

I like these SFF Dell units, I have a couple, an i3 and an i5. They run surprisingly quiet and the modular design makes them really easy to work on. Only drawback is finding reasonably priced SFF expansion cards if you need them.

I'm glad youtube has that algorithm for it was today it suggested this video. I bought a 7010 off a refurb site 14 months ago. Well, I put it out of the way as we were having new paint and flooring put in and that's so messy. I had my main computer, a PC I built in 2012 and is great and only minor upgrades during those years. But after running nearly 24/7/365x12 it was starting to show its age. I didn't want to build another one, and I loved the prices and things I had been reading on the different refurb business. So fast forward to today and I saw that box and I think it's going to be really great. It has two hdmi (I thought they were) slots that I'll have to get an adapter from my samsung monitor, then getting a ram and sshd upgrade sound like a great idea. It came with a usb wifi adapter in the box, but I have 3 already plus a USB wifi with an antenna. Thank goodness. Thank you!

I just put a 7010 SFF online as our new home pc! Since having kids, our office disappeared. Space became more important. Custom rig's way too big. Came with a sketchy KingDian SSD that I swapped with my custom rig's Samsung Evo 860.
We're loving the thing! Despite having thousands upon thousands of photos in the Windows Photo app, it scrubs through them all like a champ. And it's silent!
It's just a temporary solution until we're forced to upgrade to 8th gen Intels for Win11. Still hoping that requirement gets lifted.
I mean, Windows 11 is supported on a 2 core 1GHz slowpoke atom x6200fe because it's "new" but not on a i7-7740X? Guarantee even an i5-2500K could run it. Their cutoff is so arbitrary. Depending on how things go, that may be my cue to join you Linux folks.

Also, what about upgrading the processor? you don't know if i stick an i7 3770 in it if it'd still work? your video was really helpful. most videos on youtube with the 7010 SFF have 4 USB ports on the front and are different inside, like the ebay page you showed, but mine is exactly like the one you have.

I wonder if powering a GPU with a server PSU and reading cards with an mPCIe to PCIe x16 riser would recognize the card. I'm thinking of doing this with a low profile card like an RTX A2000.

I've had one of these exact same pcs for about 4 years now. Mine came with a 500 gb HD which is plenty since I use a 3T ext. HD w/ usb 3.0 for my main storage and backup. (Wish this pc had a usb 3.0 slot) I installed an optional small $75 Dell approved graphics card, so no big power drain from that, plus I increased the ram to 8gb. Since I don't do any gaming, it's a perfect graphics card and pc for me. However, I was wondering why I can only get about 12 months of life out of the power supply. The original one lasted about 2 years and yesterday I installed the second NEW replacement (3rd psu). I'm actually going to order a 3rd factory new replacement for about $32 just to have handy since suddenly having no pc for a couple of days is not good. The original psu did give me subtle warning signs which meant nothing to me then. Now, the replacements die with no warning.

That GPU and fan shroud may occupy both bays (not PCI slots). So if your WiFi card was low profile it’s and either or deal. A low profile single bay card with a heat sink only would allow both.
With the GPU alone you just drop it in. At worst you may have to move some cables around.

Actually, you can - however there's two gotchas.... (1) size limitations obviously. There are a select few low profile cards that will fit.
However that's not the main issue...
The second most important thing is POWER consumption.
If you haven't got a higher wattage PSU in there (think the max that fits is around a 300watt) you're going to struggle.
And from what I've seen here in the UK - the cost of a PSU upgrade would put a serious damper on many budget refits/builds.
The PSU can vary from half to the same price as the computer itself.
