Beautiful job, Nick! You’re so talented. I’ve tried to sign up for this workshop at my craft guild several times and haven’t gotten in, yet. I want to learn how to do this!
thanks Gigi, don’t give up trying I hope you find something suitable. I started my jewellery journey in an evening class. I was lucky to find something local a jeweller running education groups in her large Workshop. So enjoyable I’ve been thinking about going back and enrolling again. would make an interesting video “ attending a jewellery school” … good luck with it … Nick.
after removing your hot cast item from the mould you are left with a thin burnt surface that was touching the molten metal. This blackened layer is scraped away and disposed of. The rest of the clay can be reused indefinitely as long as it’s not to contaminated with dust, dirt and burnt clay. limiting the amount of clay that gets burnt helps. small thinner items cool quicker and burn less clay. removing an item quickly from the mould helps burn less clay. after 10 years and a lot of castings my large pile of clay was somewhat reduced I’m now on my second batch of Delft Clay … N
Thanks Ma H, really appreciate that. It’s inspiring to think one day I may be able to earn a small living working from home doing this sort of thing … much gratitude for supporting my channel … Good to find another use for Buddleia, apart from feeding the butterflies … N
Love the little trick with Cookson’s website to find out the required weight of Silver, excellent job! Also, no vent lines required in a vertical mold like this…?
Hi Peter, yes Cookson’s built in calculators are a great help for weight and size conversions. When casting vertically I tend to allow the mould to be slightly diagonal allowing the molten silver to flow down the side of the cavity, air releases at the same time preventing airlocks, so no need for vent lines. My next vid I’m working on is very similar, managed to cast a silver rod 11 inches long with this technique … N
Thanks guideline you’re right, I thought about giving it a two tone look however it was a present for somebody that likes silver to look plain … cheers … Nick
Hi Neesr, I’m using what’s called “Insulation Fire Bricks” around my hearth. This company … shop.vitcas.com … is local to me and has a large range of products … N
I’m always amazed how many varied techniques there are for casting. From ancient bronze age techniques using river clay moulds, beeswax models and charcoal fires. To modern day where ceramic moulds can be computer designed and 3-D printed … N
Nick, I am going off on a rabbit trail here. I watched your short about how to make a rotating annealing tray with the pumice, but I couldn't post my question then. Where did you get the rotating tray? Did you put it together for yourself, or did you order it from a supplier and then just add the pumice? Thanks so much. I keep all your videos in a special folder.
Hi mbr, the main component of this set up the “lazy Susan rotating turntable bearing” I found in a charity shop and paid very little money for it. They can be found online in varying sizes. For it to work well i place a heavy steel plate on top that I happen to have in my workshop. I bought the stainless steel round tray that holds the pumice in a local discount store. All in all much cheaper than a large commercial annealing pan from a jewellery tool supply company. there’s a bit more detail in the long play version of this video. If you’ve not seen it here’s a link. th-cam.com/video/GVhGb3w94p4/w-d-xo.html … cheers … Nick
@@Nickscreativestuff I watched the full video, and it answered my questions. I'll be making one of these myself ASAP. It will work great, and I won't have to purchase one!
@@Nickscreativestuff Thanks for sharing. I'm in the US, but I didn't know about the gravel for gardening. That would be the way to go - no hammering it into little pieces.
I can imagine what it might be like at your house. Oh I need a new piece of jewelry to wear for this weekend. No worries I will make it! Anything or any type the imagination desires 💙 I've decided I need more people in my life with skills, you need another friend? I sew and quilt 😂❣️
Hi Kera, yes I’ve amassed quite a collection now. not done much last month so was gagging to get back to it. Good to have friends, my partner won’t sew up the holes in my socks they say to throw them away and buy some more. My mum and sister go to a craft club somebody organises as an evening in the local pubs spare room. Would be nice to be more sociable with arts and crafts … N
@@Nickscreativestuff That sounds like right fun! Sewing and a pub, what could be better?! As long as it’s hand stitching lol would not trust myself around motorized equipment 💙👍🏻
Hi Nick I need your help I'm a cameo and a gemstone artiest I got started back in the 90's. My shop is set up for my work. I would like to buy the cuff bracelet mold. I've moved on from shell cameos due to I'm no longer aloud to use fresh water mussels here in the states. I've been retired from a 45 year job for a year now and would like to work on my art work with silver cameos. Please let me know if you can help me out on the mold I just need one. Thank You.
Hi Grey Forest Acres, Nice to be able to diversify with arts. Being a hobbyist I have plenty of time to play around with ideas and make stuff I need. maybe ask around your local community to find a friendly hobby engineer who could easily knock one of these moulds up for you … good luck with it … N
Thanks for the encouragement John, I have thought about it but that is as far as it went. Not got the headspace at the moment to put a product into production. Maybe one day I could be a bit more organised about it all, i’ve often thought I could also sell my peg board bending Jig that’s very simple to make and use … cheers … Nick.
