  • You’ve probably heard the term “gut health” and know that “good” gut health is desirable. But what does it really mean to have a healthy gut? It means having the right balance of tiny bacteria and other microbes in your digestive tract. Researchers are increasingly discovering ways these microorganisms contribute to overall health.

I’m SO glad you made this video. It’s crazy how little fiber we eat in our diets today, at least in the US. And I heard in another reputable science channel that it’s not just one fiber, but hundreds, when you look at them closely. And different microbiota need different fiber. That’s why it’s important to have a diverse diet of many types of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, oh, and mushrooms. Another oncologist out of University of California said 8-9 cups of these per person per day is what is needed to support the microbiome.

Couldn't agree more. We need *more* fiber and a *wider variety* of fiber, too! The later might even be more important than the quantity when it comes to building a healthy microbiota. It's also important to note that folks who have *lost tolerance to fiber* (common w/ IBS and SIBO, among other conditions) need to focus on building their tolerance again gradually. The answer is NOT to cut out fiber forever (ex. carnivore diet).

This is a very important topic for me. I have had constipation issues for most of my life, although I only realize this in retrospect. I already have been getting plenty of fiber in my diet and drink plenty of water, and lately I started to eat fermented foods like sauerkraut and yogurt, since many findings over the last decade show that eating fermented food regularly can have an even bigger impact on gut health than regularly eating fiber.
But even if I have good bowel movements one day, it doesn't last very long. I always go back to having a streak of constipated days. I've learned that there is a strong associated with having ADHD, and having digestion issues. Something about the genetic makeup of certain ADHD people, like me, gives them issues with the gut.

Why get fiber from a supplement when you can get it from a variety of real foods? Foods that contain fiber tend to also have other essential nutrients, such as magnesium, potassium, and phytonutrients. Additionally, many nutrients have synergistic properties - they provide little or no benefit by themselves but are much more potent when combined with certain other nutrients. For every known nutrient out there, there are likely many other unknown ones that may not be discovered for centuries.

I thought my codeine use was making it worse but I have to quit every 3 months for my drug tests & that's not the case. Even in acute withdrawals no pooping was happening last month even after 7 days clean. I eat Fiber All cereal every couple days, drink 1 gallon of water per day (minimum) & exercise but it does nothing. Then I'll be in a state of relative normalcy for no reason. Probiotics just make me feel tired & borderline sick. Could endometriosis be the cause? I've been this way my whole life but I really thought the painkillers were playing a bigger role than they are.

I've found that a small amount of psyllium (the usual 5 capsule dose, sometimes a little more) keeps a particular overgrowth problem in check. This coupled with acidophilus and maybe an occasional multi-strain probiotic dose (say monthly or as needed), fixes most gastro issues. On occasion (e.g. taco bell nights), a little "beano" helps. On the other hand, anything with methylcellulose or large dose of gluten or fructans in it causes massive bad effects, so I avoid those.

This video recommends 30 to 35 grams per day. Is it just me, or does that seem rather low?
I've used Cronometer to do spot checks on my diet. Even in the most oppressively hot weather (95+ degrees) when I was eating only around 1600 calories per day (under the conventional 4/9/4 formula), my daily fiber intake was in the mid-40s. On a bitterly cold winter day when I ate around 3200 calories (under the conventional 4/9/4 formula), I ate close to 90 grams of fiber.
In other words, I consume around 28 grams of fiber per 1000 calories. I've read that at least 14 grams of fiber per 1000 calories is recommended, so I consume about double what's recommended.
