This comment is 6 years old and you fucks decide to argue about fucking turbo lag and the dumbing down of society. Fuck offfffffffffffffffffff. Everyone knows internet forums and comment sections are the truely dumbing down of society.
When it comes to using your turbo most drivers who know what they are doing will drop one or maybe two gears depending what you are doing. Also waiting for the turbo too spool up is not turbo lag. Turbo lag is when you are pushing high revs then you suddenly let of the gas and press it back on again that time for the turbo to boost again is turbo lag.
This thing's performance through the follow through was amazing! I love the Evo, and I agree with Jeremy and would go for one with a smaller turbo, but that thing is so powerful when it's driven right!
always been in and out of BMW or Mercs and always wondered how would this EVO stack against an E39, E90, F30 or a W204. it's a really rare sight in my country.
The rental is also a manual (stick shift) in top gear to prove how bad the lag is on the FQ. The majority of cars on UK roads are manual, auto is usually only found on the high end luxury stuff. I hope this is helpful :)
Stupidest test I have ever seen. Who in their right mind would be in 6th gear doing 30 mph in a 400 bhp 2.0 litre turbo car, and then boot it and expect full boost straight away?
Reιnнardт Wιlнelм bitch... no... thats the variable boost limit which causes spool lag especially in a stock evo as thier manifolds were quite frisky, they worked great at high rpms but not so well for just fooling around and flooring at low rmps stretching gears cuz the turbos wernt spooled. Its lag not threshold.
mr_kamikaze You clearly have no idea what lag is. Lag is when you're well within the boost threshold, and how responsive the throttle is there. Example; F1 cars have a stupidly high boost threshhold, only making decent power above 8,000rpm, but they have incredible throttle response (little to no lag).
What I'm saying is he can't blame it on the car on the runway, but that he lugged the engine firstly which is something that anyone would not normally do and is really bad on the engine, secondly the car is not made to be used like that, duh!
They really had the hardest time trying to find things wrong with this car.The price tag and gas (unless your on E85) are the only issues. 90% of the things they found wrong arent even a problem, unless you don't know how to shift.. Jeremy
+Amar Abbas it does make sense to show the weak points of cars like this one This was NOT a test show which car is faster. It was there to proof a point so everybody would understand it. But they didn't count on how stupid some people are.
Iron Tarkus the point of showing car abuse? You're not supposed to use high gears to spool up your turbo... it causes premature wear of bearings and impellers. It's too low of pressure. Its just pure ignorance. The point he's 'proving' is what everyone with a turbo already knows. Plus these already have a spool range between 3500 and 8000rpm but the decline starts at 7000rpm. So in high gear at low speed, of course you'll be out of the boost range for a whiiiiile.
He was simply demonstrating the downside to having a small engine with a massive turbo. Most modern engines already have a pretty topheavy torque curve, but in this case it's taken to quite an extreme. You absolutely have to rev this engine high to make it move. Some people don't mind that and that's fine, but it was a relevant thing to demonstrate. Now if the 2 cars weren't cruising at similar revs then I'd say it was unfair.
Its entirely possible its just gearing, any car, boost or not will struggle to make any power at that configuration, so its down to gearing. That 100 something hp fiat has signifigantly shorter gearing than the evo.
I've seen this episode a number of times, but I just realized this: He's in either 5th or 6th gear, doing 30MPH, and he matted it expecting to fly. No where near boost and facing a car that's most likely an automatic and will most likely automatically downshift. I mean c'mon, do you really expect to hit boost anytime soon while in 6th gear? The RPMs are around 1000-2000 and boost usually kicks in around 4500-5000 (don't know when the turbo kicks in on EVOs so here's a rough estimate) If they had done it where the EVO was in the appropriate gear for doing 30MPH and then floored it, he would have made dust of the other car.
It's funny, some modern tuning could solve a lot of the issues with the Evo VIII MR-- The turbo lag could be solved with variable geometry and the fueling issue may just be a map thing.
It has almost nothing to do with the mapping. But yes you could improve the driveability of the car significantly with a modern day turbo setup like a twin-scroll with VTG, or a sequential bi-turbo setup (like what BMW use), or a superchager for the lower rev range that cuts out as the turbo comes in (like VWs TFSi engines) but all would increase the complexity and cost and weren't well proven tech back in 2004 either. What Mitsubishi achieved in the context of the time period (20 years ago almost) is pretty damn impressive.
@@thegirthquake8574 Not on their latest ones but there were 1.4 TFSi engines in the Golf, Jetta, Scirocco etc. with 140 or 170bhp that were supercharged and turbocharged from about 2007 to 2013.
@@KittyGamingYT It's almost as if the whole point of gears is to get around this "problem" The fiat can beat it in a ridiculous 1 gear only drag race that has absolutely no relevance to track racing or rallying, and it's a car built for the latter. Lots of the Group B rally cars also would lose to the Fiat under this arbitrary rule.
Honestly the only time I care about turbo lag is when I'm going from a full stop...any other time I'd already be in a lower gear if I'm really trying to get ahead of others.
Thing with Evos, the top Hp versions are almost practical but some of that specialised speed quality seeps through making it slightly problematic in practical situations. Getting a slightly lees powerful version however, basically the same but less problematic since it is more practical... It really just depends whether you want to own one, or you want to own one to race it.
***** Still, "Unless you're in the right gear at the right time, you have no power" is a bad argument to try make against the car. Of course you're going to be in the right gear at the right time, especially if you're in a race.
I always thought it needed a Focus WRC esque boost tank to get it going in high gear or a situation of low revs. I thought my multijet's small turbo lag was bad but it turned out after an experience with an Evo it was nothing
No, you can do it in a Corvette, a larger engine with a better torqe curve gain speed fast, i think you can even roll away in 5/6th gear in a Vette with no problem. This is what he was trying to say, you need to drive it like a hooligan and that is a problem with small engiens and large turbos, nowdays we get twin turbo to get some low end grunt to.
Still though. He can roll away too with the evo at 6th gear going 30 eventually if he just pressed on the gas but why start like that on a race though lol
I can confirm that a vette can pull away in 5th gear(z06). Other cars with more linear torque can pull away regardless of the gear, while the Evo can't. I see what the British tuners wanted to achieve, but they should've hoped the power with a more balanced set up.
The thing is, you'd never be in the situation of being in the 5th gear and flooring it at 30mph. If you're a good enough driver in this car you'll always be in the right gear at the right time.
it was a good test just wanted to show that the turbo lag it ruthless. a small mistake and you can be playing tag with your gears. but i love the evo you can pick them up now for 12G and that is a fast car :)
okay, for those saying "this is stupid, you drop gears instead of flooring it in 6th gear", or "this test makes no sense", please try to follow the logic; BOTH cars were in 6th gear - meaning the rented POS 1.6L Fiat was in 6th gear during the pull. even if the Evo was in 6th gear, logic would say that it should annihilate the Fiat because it's a 400bhp car designed around speed & keeping up with Lamborghini's, so if the rented POS 1.6L Fiat is in 6th gear, a normal person would expect the sporty Evo to destroy it no matter what gear it was in.. HOWEVER, this test demonstrated exactly what most people are missing - just because you boost the shit out of a small engine in order to make it perform like a monster during hard driving, during docile [normal] driving & real-world situations, you lose performance unless you are in the correct gear - sure, you can drop a gear or two & then get on it, but that's the whole point the test was trying to make - you NEED to drop a gear for the car to be fast; you HAVE to. for supercars [or any car with a decent N/A or S/C engine], you DON'T NEED to drop a gear to get some/good power; you simply have a good spread of power within all gears - THAT is the point of this test; the Evo is ONLY fast in certain situations with the correct gear choice, & is useless when you're not. has everyone lost their minds? the test makes perfect sense & shows exactly why some would not prefer this type of setup; some people don't mind a car that they have to man-handle all the time just to get thrills, & others enjoy a car that provides power in far more situations even if it doesn't go any faster than the smaller, turbo'd car. i prefer the latter because i don't like being caught in a real-life situation where i'd have to drop gears just to get any response from a car - having a car that still pulls decently in 5th/6th makes a whole lot of sense during long highway trips & being able to actually use 4th around town is incredibly comfortable & convenient. stop crying about the test when you just can't see the point [or are the type of person who doesn't mind flipping through gears every 10 seconds when they're driving..] because it's a perfectly reasonable test when BOTH CARS WERE IN THE SAME GEAR, & the economy shitbox was able to pull away from the car designed to be fast.. aka a 1.6L ecobox pulled away from a 2.0L sport sedan - i don't care what you say about "boost thresholds" &/or "turbo lag", the Evo had a 0.4L advantage & is designed to be fast, so the fact that the 1.6L economy POS was able to pull ahead makes me realize why i don't like turbos - by all rights, even without ANY boost, the 0.4L extra should have at least allowed the Evo to keep up with the Fiat.. but, it didn't.. it actually got passed by the car not designed for any speed & with a smaller engine.. honestly, it is possible to completely respect a car for what it can do, but also see that it has faults/quirks at the same time.. no car is perfect people.. -__-
What a tosser, a car with a top speed of 175 mph is going to have much higher gear ratios than a Fiat with a top speed of 110 mph, I drive a BMW M5 E39 and if I tried accelerating from 30 mph in 6th gear it would probably stall, let alone accelerate, and that's a naturally aspirated 4.9 litre V8. I'd also like to see the Lambo shown in part one of this clip accelerate from 30 mph in 6th gear, I suspect the result would be very similar to the Evo...
if you stall an e39 M5 flooring it at 30mph in 6th, you're an idiot.. my 03 Z06 [400bhp] has little/no trouble in 6th from 30mph, & that has a FAR lower 6th gear [0.56 vs 0.83] than your e39 M5 [394bhp], so I'm very confused how you could have any trouble in 6th from 30mph.. even with less torque.. also, the gear ratios part of your comment only feeds into my argument; the Evo uses gear ratios based on it's peak performance [aka - it's very small power band], so, unless you're in the correct gear/RPM, the ratios make no sense for the car & it performs like a slug.. aka -gear ratios based on full boost will not work at all when there is little/no boost.. like i have been saying this whole time.. if you replaced the Evo in this test with your e39 M5 or my 03 Z06, you'd find that they would not be beaten by the Fiat because their power is not reliant upon a specific point in it's RPM band [boost], & they both have much more linear power delivery - leading to an overall quicker response. of course it would be rough at first, but that wouldn't last like it did in the Evo featured in this test.. once the speed rose from 30mph to 50mph [probably sooner..] the Fiat would fall behind VERY quickly. the point of the test is to show that by the time the Evo was finally able to build up enough boost to accelerate properly, the Fiat had already won - this would not have happened in a proper N/A or S/C'd super car because they do not rely on turbo's to build boost; their power is instantaneous/direct. if you "cheat" by adding a massive turbo? you're going to have some faults - nothing is free & there are no cheat codes without their own issues.. but, thank you for agreeing with me without even realizing it.
Even if they were doing 50 mph, standard motorway speed, it would still lag super hard. And going from 50 to 70 is what you'll be doing a LOT on a motorway. The test is there to show that the Evo has no low RPM torque.
he did the same test in a corvette, in 5th gear from a dead stop. he was doing 160mph before running out of tarmac: th-cam.com/video/Ko9kzyqW-l8/w-d-xo.html but the corvette doesn't have a tin can 2.0 liter engine that runs on baby unicorn farts.

I have an evo, and I actually like the turbo lag. When you're not driving around in boost you save a lot of gas, it's a win win. Because the power is there when you want it, and the mpgs are there when you want them too. Evos are actually extremely easy to drive. I have no idea what he's talking about with the clutch.
turbo lag is the time it takes for your turbo to reach its optimum speed in order to give you boost. for the most part smaller turbos spool quicker giving you less lag and bigger ones longer giving you more lag but greater power due to colder air by reduced friction and more dense air.
If it's faster than Lambo, why it has worse time against a clock (1.24.8 vs 1.23.7) ? Also Lambo goes over 205 mph, something which cannot be achieved by any Mitsubishi
@@DetrasDeTiImbecil the Lambo has a higher top speed thanks to its gearing and aero moreso than the power. With a Turbocharged car you are never suppose to put your foot down while in a high gear below a certain RPM since it can cause engine knock and overboosting.
We've had numerous Evos over the years. I agree, the 320 is the all rounder. Controversially my bro insists the 260 was the best drive as you could drive it near 100% with ease. The 400 reminds me alittle of the rs500 with its power delivery-great when on boost...
There are people that don't shift fast enough. And some that don't know how to shift at all. My uncle told me about one guy he knew that bought a manual Corvette through the Chevrolet shop he worked in. Drove it home then back. Said he forgot he doesn't know how to drive manual. Ate up the transmission because he did the drives in a single gear.
1:50 is why many Evo owners fit sequential Turbos rather than the Turbo it comes with. Bridges the lag between the boost levels. Means you get boost in third and fifth gears.
@Budget Boost DIY must be a New Zealand bogan thing. Chuck sequential turbos on everything. V8 Commodore - Turbos Fiat 500 - Turbos 911 Turbo - needs an extra Turbo
The turbo lag test portion was to separate the people who don't know much about gears and rpm's i presume because that was ridiculous, 30 mph in 5th gear. Any car would bog. I love this show but it seems as if they were looking for any drawbacks on this budget-friendly beast, there are flaws on maintenance and mpg but in the performance category this magnificent car shines.

So you are waiting for the turbo to spool up?
Yeah so you're saying you're better than the Stig when even he dropped off boost while doing a lap time?
you literally denied it was called turbo lag then explained precisely...Turbo Lag

The rental is also a manual (stick shift) in top gear to prove how bad the lag is on the FQ. The majority of cars on UK roads are manual, auto is usually only found on the high end luxury stuff. I hope this is helpful :)
He’s lugging an Evo’s engine for a speed comparison, in that case, I could probably outrun that Evo on a surfboard before it hit boost.

Stupidest test I have ever seen. Who in their right mind would be in 6th gear doing 30 mph in a 400 bhp 2.0 litre turbo car, and then boot it and expect full boost straight away?
Someone who isn't on a track?
+michael gemmell That Evo (All Evos in general) is/are aimed at people who'll know how to drive a car like that properly
+Luke Kindred
you can't always drive a car at 130 mph and use all 400 BHP all the time
I asume you know that
michael gemmell Yes I do know that but even still the people who'd own that car would know how to drive it properly
+Luke Kindred driving in 6th at 30 is driving it properly, it saves petrol
Thats not turbo lag its the boost threshold
bitch.... no
and a 400hp turbo isn't even that big not compared to the 1000hp turbos
+mr_kamikaze bitch... yes
Its lag not threshold.
mr_kamikaze
You clearly have no idea what lag is.
Lag is when you're well within the boost threshold, and how responsive the throttle is there.
Example; F1 cars have a stupidly high boost threshhold, only making decent power above 8,000rpm, but they have incredible throttle response (little to no lag).
1:39 - Also called knowing how to drive

Hes making a point about roll on acceleration. Not about changing down 4 gears to get going
also what does he mean by out of runway, it looks like theres so much more to it
Matthew Wong they only had a select amount of runway they're aloud to use
What I'm saying is he can't blame it on the car on the runway, but that he lugged the engine firstly which is something that anyone would not normally do and is really bad on the engine, secondly the car is not made to be used like that, duh!
Thanks Jezza, I'll remember this next time I pull off in top gear.
They really had the hardest time trying to find things wrong with this car.The price tag and gas (unless your on E85) are the only issues. 90% of the things they found wrong arent even a problem, unless you don't know how to shift.. Jeremy
This video doesn't make sense, No one floors it in 6th gear. If you want to take off you drop gears and then floor it.
+Amar Abbas it does make sense to show the weak points of cars like this one This was NOT a test show which car is faster. It was there to proof a point so everybody would understand it. But they didn't count on how stupid some people are.
+Amar Abbas It's called exaggerating to illustrate a point you dope.
Amar Abbas butthurt evo fanboy spotted
Perfecz your profile pics explains a lot
He was simply demonstrating the downside to having a small engine with a massive turbo. Most modern engines already have a pretty topheavy torque curve, but in this case it's taken to quite an extreme. You absolutely have to rev this engine high to make it move. Some people don't mind that and that's fine, but it was a relevant thing to demonstrate.
Now if the 2 cars weren't cruising at similar revs then I'd say it was unfair.
a bit late but i love that. give me revs man!

True!
dude the whole point was to show that you need to be in a high rpm range or you won't get any boost at all which means you go slow as fuck
Thank god someone else noticed it!
its a joke, unless your trolling. your probably trolling
that was the whole point. Also, top gear on the evo might be geared for 160mph, the fiat will probably be geared for about 100mph
What Mitsubishi achieved in the context of the time period (20 years ago almost) is pretty damn impressive.

thats not the turbo lag, its the turbo threshold. Turbo lag is when you already have the revs.

Thing with Evos, the top Hp versions are almost practical but some of that specialised speed quality seeps through making it slightly problematic in practical situations. Getting a slightly lees powerful version however, basically the same but less problematic since it is more practical... Any car with take ages to pick up speed at 30 mph in 6th gear. What is he trying to prove?
true
Get your head straight. This is Top Gear, the comparisons will be shit! And still it is a great programme :)
he was demonstrating how much lag there was in the turbo. and jeremy clarkson is a very talented driver
"off the boost!!!"
never heard of a clutch kick obviously!
there goes your 3 differentials, driveshaft, or an input shaft... also its not gonna spin enough to benefit from a clutch kick in a straight line
okay, for those saying "this is stupid, you drop gears instead of flooring it in 6th gear", or "this test makes no sense", please try to follow the logic;
BOTH cars were in 6th gear - meaning the rented POS 1.6L Fiat was in 6th gear during the pull. even if the Evo was in 6th gear, logic would say that it should annihilate the Fiat because it's a 400bhp car designed around speed & keeping up with Lamborghini's, so if the rented POS 1.6L Fiat is in 6th gear, a normal person would expect the sporty Evo to destroy it no matter what gear it was in..
Do you go to a race track and drive around in 6th gear from start to finish?
-___-
not on the track, but on the road you, if you have to make a quick overtaking you always have to downshift.
Lol intake + diverter valve = problem solved. That turning radius is brutal tho, haha.
Even if they were doing 50 mph, standard motorway speed, it would still lag super hard. And going from 50 to 70 is what you'll be doing a LOT on a motorway. The test is there to show that the Evo has no low RPM torque.
