ALWAYS LOVED THE EVO OVER SUBARU FROM DAY ONE I LOVE THE SHAPE OF IT BRILLIANT CAR GLAD HAMMOND PLULLED THE TRIGGER AND INVESTED IN ONE ITS A PROPER CLASSIC CAR
I went from an M3 to my Evo and it was interesting to note the difference in reaction from other road users. There were times you could almost feel the hate of some people towards a BMW driver and yet in the Evo I would receive waves or nods from other drivers and people would often comment favourably at the petrol station or car parks. Never seemed to generate any resentment.
Absolutely loved seeing these two battle against one another! Get Izzy on more presenting videos for this channel! It's a breath of fresh air seeing and listening to someone who isn't completely TV and media trained.
@smartgorilla from what I see in the comments, majority seems to approve of a non car enthusiast. Obviously, the top gear three will never be beaten. However, I think the original review of Martin she done was class.
There was a moment in Martin with Ben and Mike where Ben gave him a disapproving look as they were setting off that was so Stig-gish I could almost see the white helmet on his head. As for what happened to the Evo's flywheel, I believe James McAvoy said it best on TG, 'It was cut to shribbins!'
For their entire product lifetimes, these cars were basically just seperated by their engine position and layout. The Scoob was always fighting physics with it's high mounted long engine slung out front, whereas the Evo with it's short transverse low engine was an inherently much better balanced car front to rear. Having worked at prodrive for 6 years during the height of these cars reign, both on the WRC and road car projects, with the scoob you could choose between a nice handling balance OR max LatG, whereas with the Evo you could find a setup to do both. Basically the Scoob always understeered if you set it up for max LatG, which drivers hated, and this really was why it was never a very successful tarmac car, as opposited to on loose surfaces with more low gear, low friction accels where the mass distribution worked more in it's favour. Over the years and models, FHI threw more and more tech at the scoob chassis to try to help things out, but at the end of the day, you just can't beat the laws of physics. Evo for me, every time....... ;-)
Can you clarify what you mean by the Subarus engine mounted high, slung out front? Compared to the evos very much upright transverse four. Nearly the entire Subaru brochures from yesteryear banged on about the 'low slung' flat four.
@@PPC4it’s mounted low correct, but the engine is hanging out in the front of the car to make room for the gearbox. The front wheel axles go directly in the gearbox hence the engine is pushed out to the front of the car. So you have the engine connected to the gearbox and the front wheel axels going into the gearbox. Hence the engine needs to hang out front. The Evo has to do a 90degree turn via the gearboxes to get the power to the front wheels.
@@PPC4 Ah the power of "marketing" What FHIs marketing department did was actually really quite clever, and the managed to hoodwink a lot of people, including most of the motoring press of the time. FHI claimed "our flat four engine has a low center of gravity" which is in fact absolutely true. A bare engines CofG is measured in terms of it's height above the crankshaft centre line, so yes, a flat engine indeed has the lowest possible CofG architecutrally speaking. What FHI failed to mention, was that the thing that actually matters is the INSTALLED CofG, and here, things go south quickly. Firstly, you need to leave space under the engine for exhaust manifolds and the sump, so the crank has to be high relative to the lowest installed point of the engine. Secondly, you have to couple the engine to a transmission and have a clutch, which in a road car that needs a practical/affordable clutch (ie no 80mm carbon-carbon race clutches here) means the engine again gets lifted up. So, when you measure the engine CofG when installed in a Scoob, it actually ends up higher than that of a well installed transverse inline engine ie like the Evo has. Then because of the 4wd system that FHI was wedded too (See: "marketing" again) that engine has to be infront of the front axle lateral centre line, so now not only is your engine high, it's well forwards too. So, your vehicle is now absolutely laid out in a physically non-optimum fashion, and nothing can change that. You always have a high CofG, a large polar moment of intertia and a forwards mass distribution. You can mess with chassis settings to try to dynamically move that mass around, but ultimately, everything you do to achieve that reduces max lateral acceleration, ie cornering speed.......
@maxtorque2277 Sweet point, I never thought about how far forward the flat 4 sits, make so much sense now when I drove a new wrx couldn't work out why it felt like it understeered far worse than a awd should, heck the fwd Renault's we had had less understeer than the new wrx

The amount of people who don’t know this is mental. You can never get rid of understeer in a subaru unless you run active diffs like the wrc cars did. Terrible weight distribution and the heavy engine mounted miles upfront just like an Audi. Internet talk always said they just need a stiffer rear anti roll bar, lol they need more than that. The engine indeed is mounted high up aswell, sheep just consume all the marketing BS. Even a ford cosworth from the 80’s/90’s has a better weight distribution and gearbox design.
why ? easy to work on 100 percent goes to subaru .reliable is debatable ... just because the evo can get more power out the box doesn't make it more reliable ...
Mitsubishi and Nissan are part of Renault and all three use same architecture now for all models. EVO will never come back as too costly for a single model and the WRX is pretty much at the end of its life cycle. RIP both of you.

They decided to retire to give Subaru a chance to catch up
Having enjoyed a few Mitsi's from a VR4 to an AWD Magna/Diamente Sport and an Evo3 and 5 their AWD systems are incredible along with the chassis dynamics which makes them a great all round sport sedan, the motorsports heritage and the resulting trickle down engineering makes them a really fun thing especially on the loose stuff.
I’ve had mine 20 years now and I still love exploring the strengths and weaknesses of both cars. Both forever classics now. Living the memories all over again with this episode.😎
There is this place in Hungary where you pay like 200 eur and you can hoon around both cars for some laps, having driven both the subaru and the evo back to back i can say that the eveo felt abit more manageable, some how more planted and more confidence inspiring.
I would think lap lines won't match when also conducting an interview. Mike can drive. Izzy got better at driving a stick. And Ben is awesome! Love Drive Tribe! ❤
Both excellent cars, but I'd prefer Subaru any day over Evo. Plus, I wanted to see Richard Hammond in his Subaru and Mike in his Evo to have that last ride to verdict that which car is best and also have a drag race as well. I mean, Richard Hammond is known for car stuff, so it'd be logical to have him there with the ex stig Ben Collins. Lastly, I love your content and love the humour to give us Mike and Richard Hammond ❤️.
these cars make being a car guy that much sweeter...I've only ever driven a WRX wagon with a turbo...bone stock...and thought it was pretty decent...now I gotta find someone nice to loan me an Evo for an afternoon...
We need more! This was such a great episode, all smiles the entire way. Great job Izz, but you're wrong about that intake noise, it sounds fabulous on the EVO. My friend had an EVO VII also and he put on a K&N, and I loved it. He always parked it at my house when he was gone on business trips and I would drive it around.
Got to love a 4G63 Mitsubishi: fun...when it works. Honestly, I love seeing Izzy, Mike, and Ben all at once. You got someone who is still new to cars, an enthusiast, and a true racecar driver. It's also nice to see Ben drive without a helmet, and man...that powerslide with the Subaru was pure art.

I drove both the EVO VIII and EVO IX (US) and 05 STi, and I always preferred the STi gearbox over the EVO. I don't like the throws on the EVO it's way too short and you can't miss a gear if you're not used to it. The STi feels more comfortable and easier to drive, but the EVO feels more special, like a race car for the road.
My DREAM car is the very rare Mitzi Evo estate and have started to collect the Japanese 1/64 die cast, which has exceptional detail for the cost and size . My favourite DT video of the year!!! Please fix the EVO up… we need more videos of these two, maybe a road trip in them both (they deserve windy roads with a background of mountains and lakes!)

Ben is utterly amazing... 😍 One of a few that could ring the necks of those two beasts... My Escort RST I could grab by the scruff and play with, but my Scooby totally out-drove my abilities... Epic race...

I still prefer the understated Evo look and interior design but in the end i would just go for the one that is more reliable on track
Poke fun at me all day long if you must 😁 but good god watching Ben go full send seriously brings a slight tear to my eyes . You know when you see somthing so damn awesome it kind a chokes you up just that little bit. That Subaru slide was epic. Ben full send is alway the same. You swear the car is begging for its life as it didn't even know it could that lol. Also BBC, you have your 3 top gear presenters right here , get to it and make it happen.
I´ve had the chance to be on both cars as a passenger. My uncle as a Subaru STI Prodrive and a friend of mine as a EVO 7, and from what I felt is that the Subaru is much more agressive as a general and feels more mechanic(i have driven it twice), the EVO develops its power but not so violently yet you can feel it when changing gears the "punch" that it gives it´s amazing. It´s very hard to tell wich one is better and it depends on the driver also my friend who as the EVO is a amateur rally driver so I think that matters. PS: The Subaru runs on Bridgestone Potenza and the EVO on Nankang NS2R
I own a 05 evo and a 07 sti, both stock for now and i honestly the sti feels a lot more engaging and fun, oh and the sti has been a lot more reliable than my evo😅 love em both

Why didn't ben wear his stig outfit
no ones driving that evo home, at least you got a reason to put a banging clutch in it!
I don't care who wins, I just want to see both to live on and be seen on the roads.
No wonder she was scared to put her foot down on accelerator pedal - she's got accident-prone Richard Hammond genes.

😂😂 Ben yanking on the handbrake mid corner. Absolutely no fear
Ben: "Handbrakes a bit milky, init"
Mike: "Don't you dare"
Ben: *laughs in already did*
He must have at least a little confidence in Mike's driving ability, banter aside.
@OldWhitebelly he has to. Riding passenger on track and just casually pulling your buddies e-brake? I might know 1 person I'd trust to do that to.

Watching Ben go around the track makes me so happy. Him going off road in the Evo just screamed Gambon Corner...
I’ll watch anything with Ben on the track. Always enjoyable.
Nice to see the baby Hamster going the way of the Hamster
