    A lot depends on the place where you live and the kind of driving you do. Usually the time limit is 1 year for most higher displacement bikes and for most cars. The issue we have in northern countries is condensation inside the engine and water will contaminate oil. When you use a car for short trips, the oil is not warmed enough to evaporate the condensation. This can lead to corrosion, oil contamination, cylinder scoring and over time, increased oil burning. But these effects usually become apparent after around 100,000kms of mileage.

    The dealership from which i bought my bike asked me to change oil after every odd services no matter i have ridden my bike or not and i told them not to do so and they told me it will void my warranty but i told them no to. And one day my hero xtreme sports start showing some problems in the instrument cluster like the rmp and fuel gauge readings got faulty and the dealer told me they can't claim warranty because i didn't change oil as they wish they also told me that engine oil will loose it viscosity and be like water after 6 months( lol iam a mechanical engineer😁). In the instructions manual the oil change period is 6k km and top up at 3k km so i contact heromotocorp and asked them what the heck is this, With in one day the dealer called me and told me to bring my bike to showroom and they will change it free of cost and i got it replaced😂. So this message is for everyone out there don't be fooled by those dealers just read your bike's manual carefully.

    This video came in like cool water for a thirsty man in a desert. I was so confused about this time vs mileage change once upon a time. Ended up spending a lot of parent's money on timely oil changes on my R15. I own a Duke 390 now and I think I'll do the second service only when the bike completes 8500 km.
    Thank you so much for resolving the confusion with the back up of evidence.

    Vikas Rachamalla; Just thought I'd bounce this off you see what your thoughts may be. Engines that do not get fully warmed up to normal operating temperature will leave moisture(condensation) inside that crankcase that will increase the acid levels in the oil. To explain, it's like the exhaust pipe that steams on startup on the cooler days and then clears. If you turn your motor off before the steam clears on a daily basis, you are going to rust out your exhaust pipe. Take a person that rides a very short distance back and forth to work everyday and hardly ever gets their engine fully warmed up. The miles are not adding up very fast toward an oil change, but over time their oil needs to be changed due to the acids they may be creating from the moisture. The oil is going to look great, but the make-up has changed to warrant the change. Then there's the engine on the other end of the extreme that does stay running most the day in terribly slow traffic that doesn't build miles fast either, but will need an oil change. So, each low miles person will have to determine for themselves whether they should consider time base oil changes or not. I hope this explains the manufacturers request for the time base oil changes. All they are doing is trying to embrace all the driving needs that a customer may have.
    Note: An engine that's continued to be used after it's fully warmed up for a little bit is most likely "dry" through the positive crankcase ventilation(PCV) system, or some form of crankcase ventilation, so low miles may not be so much of a threat. I don't know when a crankcase changes from moisture "wet" to moisture "dry" and it probably will vary per engine. Crankcase ventilation works well to prevent acids, so much so that most people don't even know engine acids can form.
    Anyway, that's the way all was explained to me. Have that good one.

    Your comments on oil are far more accurate than you would ever believe. DAF Trucks in the 60 -70s ran a test engine for 20 years continuously without a single oil change. The engine was fitted with a parallel filter system that allowed filters to be isolated and changed without stopping the engine. The experiment was eventually stopped as it became too expensive.
    Conclusion. You only need filter changes to keep your oil healthy.
    Imagine if oil consumption was reduced by 90%.

    Hi, I agree with you but I have one question tough... In India where we have bumper to bumper traffic, engine idles for lot of time which makes results in even more wear on the engine's cylinder(from to pistons of course), etc. So maybe we have to include time factor for oil change period too, not as much as dealer suggests, but may be upto some extent. Do you agree?

      I agree with you but doesnt oil condensate in the engine over time with the hot and cold changes etc and it gets acidic by sitting in the engine with the blow by from the pistons contaminating the oil even after 2000km.

  • @FamousInsane
    @FamousInsane 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Vikas! This video was really great but at last you said that your honda civic runs for 10,000 kms on mineral oil it is because of low rpm of car engines as compared to that of high rpm motorcycle engines. And oil drain interval according to miles is really great but i would like to add few things that it also depends on how you ride. Like some people like to ride on higher rpms above 8-9k and few peoples like me😛 ride generally at 4-5k rpm, this is also the case to be considered when changing the oil.
    And atlast there are few deawbacks of mineral oils like it deposit carbons (black sticky things) on your engine component whereas a full synthetic keeps it clean 😄

    • @johndevore3951
      @johndevore3951 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Famousinsane: If you are getting black sticky things(sludge) in your oil you need to change your oil brand or choose an oil with a detergent additive to prevent sludge from forming. You may have sludge deposits in your oil passages restricting oil flow. The detergents will clean this out, so you will need to change your oil filter at least once, perhaps midway, through a normal oil change interval with your first use of the detergent oil. Hope this helps.

  • @crispytricky4099
    @crispytricky4099 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it true that high viscosity engine oil like 20w50 are not good for newer engines? So what about the sludge formation due to longer usage of oil? Enlight me pls.

  • @coolpras26

    I had a general question about warranty - Let's say a vehicle has 2 years/30,000kms warranty, whichever is earlier, and manufacturer gives you 3 free services and then 3 paid ones which are 'mandatory' to ensure warranty is not void, as written in the manual. If you go in for minor stuff like oil change or air filter clean up etc, or brake/clutch level tightening or chain tightening etc they shouldn't change you for the services during the 'warranty period' right? Also what happens after warranty? Do you get the same services with money that you would get during the 'warranty period paid services'?

    We would love to see more such videos bro :) And i would like to share my experience here. My ride is Pulsar 220 and the oil recommended by bajaj is mineral oil and drain interval is 10k kms. But believe it until 1.5-2k kms it runs absolutely fine, but later on its down hill jiffy, i tend to notice the gear box becomes very sluggish, vibrations tend to kick in and a lot more stuff. Well it totally depends on how we ride it, that's true. But as far as i'm concerned my commute is usually half city-half highway. I lube my chain every 500 kms. Every other pulsar owners blame the oil used in it. In every other forums and what not over the internet people tend to not stick with the bajaj oil and use other synthetic oil available.
    And sir please do some more DIY's and Myth buster as it's very informative :)

      Vikram I totally agree with you, i own a bajaj pulsar 220f 2016, and after 1.5-2k kms the mineral oil provided by bajaj makes engine a bit rough, gear shifts become hard lots of false neutral and other stuff.
      I would recommend you to go for 'Motul 4t 3100 gold 20w50' and believe me bike is running amazing, precised gear shifts minimal vibrations and what not.
      btw 7100 20w50 is also and good option but I haven't used it yet.

    • @Vikramviki05
      @Vikramviki05 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true bro, i guess most of the owners face the same issue when used bajaj oil. And BTW can u just tell me why did u go with 4t 3100 gold 20w50 over 5100 or 7100? I've brought the 5100 and expecting the bike to perform better than before :)

    • @Debasmit007
      @Debasmit007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same issue here Vikram, I have been riding a 2015 200NS and using Bajaj dtsi oil since the beginning. I have ridden almost 27K. The Bajaj oil feels good for the first 1.5 to 2k km, but after that the engine becomes a little bit harsh, I can feel the difference. So now m planning to go for Motul 7100 4T 20W50. Hope it will perform better.. :)

    I wanted to ask that I bought recently Apache 180 in august.
    I am done with 4 services.
    on 2nd service, when I filled bike with TVS TRU4 SYNTHETIC OIL, I felt that engine became smoother than before. service interval is 2500-3000kms
    So I changed oil after approximately 5000kms, on the 4th service.
    The moment I was reaching near to 5000kms, I was feeling like engine is becoming but rough. Engine oil level was good, no leakage etc.
    I thought I made mistake to run my bike for 5000kms, I should have changed the oil on 3rd service.
    Now when I changed oil on 4th service, engine is feeling bit rough as it was before service.
    What could be the expected reason after it?
    What should I do to get smoother engine performance?
    Should I fill up Mineral oil at interval of 2500kms or Synthetic oil for 5000kms??? Kindly answer

    Absolutely right... Time based replacement is just a wastage of money.
    I filled my Hero Xtreme with Valvoline 20/50 and use to replace after 5000km. My bike has done almost 35000 km and i never faced any problem. Engine is so smooth, sound is really good.
    Vikas, thanks for this video..
    keep uploading such valuable information.
    Good Luck

    This is exactly what happend to me with my r15, mechanics used to tell me change it by time basis, or ur warranty will be void, even though i had done 1500-2000 kms. Glad i didnt fall for it.

    I have a KTM RC 390 for which I recently got the engine oil changed. They changed the oil filter too and they used 1.5l Motul 7100 4T as recommended. Thing is that I noticed the oil level is not between the mark that should be and I checked it a couple of times. Then I checked with the KTM service and after arguing with them, they drained the entire oil and showed me the oil that they used in a measurement jar. I got some assurance and then got the engine oil filled again. They mentioned I can see the right level during morning but no way and still its at that low level when I checked the oil level keeping the bike upright. I have seen threads mentioning you might have to fill in 1.6-1.7l to get the right level. And these KTM guys also mentioned the same that they had to use around 1.6. But I am just not getting the right oil level that it should be. What is your opinion on this bro?

    hi , i have Benelli 600 GT , and i tour a lot and in last 4 months I've done 12,500 kms so far , but the problem I'm facing is the service cost , so benelli has a pathetic service interval of just 4000 kms , so I'm ending up with service every month which is costing around 8000 rupees per month just maintain the bike which is very high , so can you suggest does my bike really need motel 300 oil fully synthetic ? or it will also run good enough with mineral oil ?

    • @johndevore3951
      @johndevore3951 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr Rohan sp: A well refined mineral oil should do you very well. If you have a wet clutch make sure the oil you choose does not have a friction reducing modifier.

  • @HeyMumbai

    yes right.. they just do it time based oil change because they get good margin income on it. we can check the color and thickness of oil from outside and if we love our bike, we can feel it needs to change or not.

    Vikas bhai I have a doubt...I’m currently using yamalube for my fz16 and I’m going for the Motul coz I’m not satisfied with yamalube...many people are saying to stick with manufacturer recommended oil i.e.,yamalube for 12k kilometres . Is this true?? (P.s: my bike ran around 4500 kilometres)

    Bro , nicely explained. But my issue is different. I use shell full synthetic engine oil but my cat runs only 700 to 800 kilometers in 6 months. So what do I do now some workshops say that even if you run your car 100 kilometers in 5 months, you should change the oil no matter even it is full synthetic. Some workshops say since you drive like 700 kilometers only in 5 months so you keep the oil for at best 6 months. Full synthetic oils can last up to at least 7000 kilometers or 6 months. Some say whether your oil is full synthetic or whatever , just change your oil every 3 months even if you drive for 100 kilometers only in 3 months. So what should I do now? I drive 700 kilometers only in 5 months not 7000 kilometers. I am really confused. Need some clean and clear answers. Please help here.
