The reason for the hard break in period is for the following reasons:(1) to allow all the bearings, moving parts such as selector forks, etc. settle into place. (2) For the period before the first service the oil used is of a lower lubrication grade so that the moving parts can wear in faster. (On expensive bikes the motors are run in past this stage). (3) New cylinder bores need to build up a glaze caused by hot engine oil. (4) The motor or whole bike might have that one in a thousand bad part that slipped past quality control. You don't want to find out that the gear selector fork, bearing, etc. could not take the extra stress caused by the rider thrashing the life out of a brand new tight motor at a high speed when it locks up!! (5) The mechanics in the bike shop that assembeled the bike out of the crate might have forgotten to tigghten something up or were distracted partway through a job on the bike and forgot to finish the task. I've seen a brand new Yamaha YB100 have all its engine bolts fall out and the motor start to come out of the frame during its first 500 miles from the showroom. A Suzuki GSX750R have the sump plug fall out directly after the first service on the way home from the dealership. I came around the corner to be greeted by a 1/2 mile of engine oil along the road and a pissed off owner sat by his bike. (6) Most importantly the oil in a new motor is highly contaminated with dirt, metal crap, swarf, etc. during the first stage of breaking / running in and will overheat a lot easier than normal as the oil filter clogs up and stifles free oil flow.

Seems you know your stuff. So would you agree with the guy in the video? I did 160km today because I had to get home from the dealership. I will read the manual tomorrow. I asked about the break in at the dealer and nobody had any clue... the rev gauge actually starts blinking on the duke 390 at around 6000 rpm, so it’s telling me to not go over. The only questions I have is what should be my lowest rpm and what is better. Stable cruising speeds or different speeds.

I experienced the 5th point you said today itself with my new Bajaj Pulsar 250. I took the motorbike at 80kmph, 5000rpm, and engine oil started to leak. Took it to service center and found out that oil pressure switch wasn't tightened properly at the factory. But I wonder if I wouldn't have pushed the motorcycle slightly, how would I have come to know about this?

A racer will do almost anything in search of an advantage over the competition, even if it means risking life, limb and machinery: Everything from removing mufflers and running dangerous gas blends to questionable oil additives and even secretly (against the rulebook) tuning a motor or skipping meals to reduce weight.
Another old trick in the racer’s book is to remove the air filter in hopes of cutting the inlet restriction, thus increasing power. A quick search of the ever resourceful Inter-web revealed that this old trick has stretched far beyond the track as many people are even ditching the filters on their streetbikes. Some claim they “felt” a sizeable increase in power while others noted little to no seat-of-the pants improvements.
Although running without an air filter on the street can be risky (more on that later), we decided it was time to put this old racing folklore to the test on the dyno. Was it worth a few more ponies?
    On the dyno
To keep things as scientific as possible, all before-and-after runs were made on the same dyno no more than 5 minutes apart from one another. We also decided to test both a stock Ninja 1000 and a modified Hayabusa in the order of fairness since one bike might respond differently than the next. We’re not saying that all bikes will react the same as these two, but a lot can be gathered from the results.
We rolled the stock Ninja 1000 on the dyno first and made a few pulls with and without an air filter. The big Kawi gained roughly 1 HP from 7500 RPM to the limiter without the air filter in place. Changes in torque were negligible at less than 1 LB-FT.
Next up was a modded ’Busa fitted with an M4 full system. Oftentimes uncorking the inlet side of a bike that already has an open exhaust usually nets larger gains than if it had a stock exhaust. Think about inhaling air through a huge pipe and then having to exhale it through a straw-it’s a bottleneck. Considering that, a bike with an open exhaust was a nice alternative to the stock Ninja. After some before and after pulls the ’Busa netted roughly 2 HP from 6800 RPM to the limiter with a torque increase of less than 1 LB-FT.
    Myth: Confirmed. Plausible. Busted
Both bikes did gain minor power without an air filter, but at a huge risk to severe engine damage. Beyond ingesting large road grit, it’s the small debris the human eye can’t easily see that will quickly destroy an engine. Instead of the air filter catching these contaminants they’re free to enter the motor where they will quickly destroy valve seats and even your cylinder bores and rings. Eventually, the motor will begin to leak compression and oil.
Although 2 horsepower for free might sound great, it’s really not free when you consider the cost of an inevitable motor rebuild. However, if you’re a racer in search of every last ounce and refresh your motor several times a season, why not? Otherwise, stick with your stock filter or look to a freer flowing (but still protective) aftermarket replacement.

You also need to variate the rpm with a new engine. Don't stress it and when you do eventually have it ran in dont just go balls to the wall max rpm full throttle, gently ease the engine up to higher and higher speeds and at that level of rpm the piston is reaching a slightly new part of the cylinder. Its not a great idea to sit at one constant rpm for long periods of time either while running in. Or so my Yamaha manual says.

      @souravraychaudhuri6600 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Wait, piston is reaching a new part of the cylinder? How is that possible? The stroke length remains the same irrespective of the rpm. Varying the rpm results in variation of friction. This varying rpm would also remove the microscopic unevenness from the cylinder and piston and will make the new engine perform good both at low and high rpm's in the future.

  • @dedasdude

Great vid but one thing you missed is that run in is needed for is work hardening. Work hardening is a process by which when a metal is stressed and de stressed, it hardens over time. kind of like when you bend a paper clip back and forth it will slow get harder to bend. But everything else you mentioned is 101% correct.
Best practice is to read the owners manual and do what it says.

    • @jamesk7446
      @jamesk7446 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

irrelavant13 that's what work hardening does. metal can be worked until it become brittle and breaks. in this sense, the use of the word hardening refers to the molecular structure of the metal becoming less flexible, friction increases in the molecular chain generating heat and weakening the bonds. Eventually the yield strength is reach and the metal becomes fatigued and breaks.

Even I had done the same techniques for my R3 (took it to 148kmph too xD) and not listening to the dealer. Glad to hear the same techniques from you too! Only the first 100-150 are a bit crucial, since the minute filings from the cylinder and piston cannot be smoothened even by precise machines. After 150kms, you can revv the bike beyond the specified rpm limit, without damaging the engine.

    Its simple,
Just follow what your bike/cars manufacturer said in "manual"
Not the mechanic or the Dealership
Superbikes don't need a running in period as they are already done break in from factory
But a cheap commuter bike may need that.
When i visited the AshokLeyland Plant as part of my internship, Every units tested in dyno to full rpm. and also the Test drivers drove them with pedal to metal in Testing area
If you are going to Rebuild the Blown engine.
You should follow the mechanic or expert because the Local machining shops never get the precision of CNC.

Computers do control the process and the parameters but not the finish...it can be consistent though but the cylinder bore is smoothly finished by a process called Honing...which is quite older...I saw honing machines in 80s at Bajaj...still the tools used today are almost the same.... Patience boss, have some and be safe..
I agree on the lubricants, oil and technology but the basics remain the same in engineering and the physics...do respect it, follow the manual than Mechanics..true...
Even the materials have changed over Time. Be safe than sorry.

Manufacturers run cars and bikes on a dyno to test them out and that's at different speeds and loads that exceed what they tell us to run the engine at. It doesnt take 500 miles of various riding types to seat rings or any other metal on metal part. 500 miles is excessive. I can understand 100 miles but even that is a shit load of ring against bore contact. Anything that is going to wear in should be seated with in 100 miles. I built a full on drag racing stroker 383 with a big ass hydraulic flat tappet cam and I ran it for 100 miles with break in oil (high zinc content) then i changed the oil to royal purple and drove the shit out of it. All cylinders were even with all the testing I could do, including a visual inspection with a magnified cylinder scope. After I switch oils from the break in period I never had metal build up on the magnetic drain plug or the magnets in the oil pan or when I cut open the oil filter. Alot of this break in info does seem to be old fashioned shit like changing your oil at 3000 miles. Modern oils last alot longer than that. I've changed the royal purple in my ls1 at 5000 miles after many hard miles and quite a few nitrous pulls and it was still purple and clean, just a little bit darker. The engine had 33,000 miles on it at that time. It's at 60k miles now and the oil still comes out clean and purple every 5k miles. Sure, break in your engine but some of these break in recommendations are excessive.

Really the best advice to enjoy your new bike and not be paranoid is just don't rag it. The specific rpms are just a guide so everyone doesn't go out and thrash their new engines.. Think about it, what difference does a couple plus hundred rpm make ? none, its just a guide, all you do is break the engine in a little faster, there is no exact science. Common sense is the best advice. You can enjoy it at any rpm below max providing your not holding it at high rpm or full throttle for long periods and you are varying your speed a lot. You will have a properly run in engine if you do that. If you run it too slow you risk not getting bearing pressure, not hardening the metals and only slightly polishing the mating surfaces. Followed by correct maintenance, drop factory oil when your manual says, check valve clearances. You'll be good

How many engines have you developed? So you're saying that the OEM's makes statements in the users manuals just for the sake of doing it? Even if engine components are machine made today the surfaces are still rough, they are smooth for the naked eye but as you probably now metal expands if you heat it meaning that you are smoothing the surfaces by being gentle. Looks and examine your oil at the first change and you will fine the "rubbed" off metal and other junk in the engine. It's hard to keep everything clean.

There are other practical things like faulty material and heat treatment for wearing out parts...
Which may cause failures like cracking and breaking..literally into pieces...can happen....that's why we have to be very careful ..so the speed limits....furnaces for the heat treatment are also controlled by microprocessor these days but still people attending and monitoring are humans Only....
So better be safe than sorry

And also there is nothing like pre-run in engine. The manufacturer perform it because it is the first start of the engine and eyery thing should be taken care of like rpm, tempreature, oil preassure, oil flow, ignition timing and many more which a rookie rider does not care.

Atul Dube You mean 10,000 * RPMs. And yes, it WON'T go above 10k as every engine (car or bike) comes with a "rev limit". That's where " redline" starts. One shall not redline the bike during break-in period.
And you've said you don't rev it? Man, then how did you know that YOUR bike doesnt go a ove 10k RPMs? As you've also said that you didn't go above 70-80 kmph. sigh! 😥
Just keep the RPMs below 7.5k something and you'll be good. (pay attention while watching the video 😥"

Awesome video bro! Most of the mechanics tell us to maintain it like a 100cc bike! Even in RE manual, it is mentioned to ride around 50kmph during run in period!! This is not at all possible! The lowest speed for top gear is 60kmph! If we go below it, the engine starts to knock and chain sprocket also may get damaged!

If you want your car or bike engine to last as long as want and also give as much power as you want. The first thing is to drive your vehecle without hitting the redline or you can say do not put too much load on the engine. Reasons- because the engine cylinder consists of a criss cross pattern which helps it to lubricate piston rings as the piston moves up down it cuts or sand those grooves over time which should be done gently because if this process is done harshly it can cause the rings to loose or can also make them rotate inside cylinder causing compression loss and more blow by also the bearings should be taken easily because putting more load at engine cause the bearing balls to loose or worn.

Bots still have errors and only premium engines comes pre-broke from factory. All under 2L bikes aren't pre broke properly and will permanently & significantly damage engine if running at its threshold RPM. So Yeah for Bajaj or KTM bikes available in INDIA its scientific to keep the RPM below 50% for first 5k KM after buying.

Exactly!! Run in period is the 'limitation' on engine rpm and not the speed, one has to maintain, i took the delivery of my duke 390 and rode off to my place which is 300 kms away..very same day. I was doing constant 120kmphr(keeping engine rpm under 6.5k). And i was riding in 'different rpm ranges'(never to ride in a fixed rpm for longer duration), thats very crucial aspect for engine seasoning....

Engine running in is supposed to be done at varied speeds and engine stress levels.
The point is to make the engine parts sit well with each other.
Riding at constant speeds during the running in periods is disastrous for your engine in the long run..piston rings in specific.
We can give short bursts of low too gear high speeds and roms after the engine heats, mid range speeds for majority of the times, and subject to traffic.
The bikes need to be submitted to all kinds of loads that it's gonna experience throughout its lifetime.
    Great video btw, ride safe!
