I MADE MY LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 3 OFF-ROAD READY

  • Before heading off to the off-road area I needed to get my Land Rover Discovery 3 off-road ready with some much needed bash plate, or Prospeed front guard if you like, and some custom rock and tree sliders.
    There is no doubt that I will be needing every mm of aluminium and steel I can get on it before I finally hit the off-road tracks down in Elvedalen off-road area.
    So much fun to finally be doing some modifications to the Discovery and not only doing maintenance.

      This is a great modification, very well done. I think I will make this modification on my Discovery too.

    Nice job on video and mods. It never ceases to amaze on how auto manufacturers can skimp on rust proofing vehicles and/or creating areas for condensation salt and sand to collect.
    Every fuel pump I’ve ever replaced on my rovers had about 3 kilos of sand and salt sitting right where the fuel pump lived which corroded all the connections and components on the fuel pump canister.
    Make sure those rock sliders have drain holes on the bottoms som the grit and sand can come out.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you, it turned out great in the end, broken bolt and all. 😊 There are enough areas for the salt to hide for sure, need to do some rust proofing before the winter comes. The rock sliders have small half moons on each side of the plate and have worked out nicely, only big rock that have been a issue so far. 😊 And the rock sliders are made of stainless steel so I'm hoping they will last for a while. 😅

    Great to see it coming together. When you edited in that music for the bolt on the compressor guard I was like......oh no please don't snap 😅 looking great and nice rock sliders. At the end, was your D3 in off road mode? It just looked a little lower than I expected it to. Looking forward to seeing the footage from the trip😎😁

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks Simon and it is really good to be modifying the car and not only doing maintenance, or replacing a engine. 😉😂 The music was very intentional, as of my history in the garage with broken bolts, and it was nice to have it be a happy ending for once. 👍😊 Started on the next part where I drive down to the off-road area. I think it’s going to be a nice series and good edit some off-road on the next video after that one. 👍 I’m not sure if I was in off-road mode, maybe the angle made it lean, that track has a nasty lean to the left. I know I had it in normal mode a lot to be sure I could raise it of rocks if I needed. And I used the extended mode a bunch of times to. Saved me many times. 😊

    Hi, I like your red rover! I noticed 3 access holes in your new front skidplate. I am familiar with the middle hole for the recovery point. Are the side holes used for a high lift jack, or air flow, or something else? I've not seen those before.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey and thank you! The extra holes in the front guard are there to allow air to flow through to the radiator which sits behind it. There is a air shaft in the bumper, and now behind the front guard, that leads the air into the radiator. And maybe the transmission oil cooler, need to check that. 😊 Great question! I not sure how I would use a high lift jack on the front of the Discovery, also need to look into that. 😊 Maybe need to make my own solution.

  • @AdeptHavelock
    @AdeptHavelock 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Hi Simon. The reason your spare wheel carrier siezed is because it needs a load on it at all times when being raised or lowered. If not, the cable has a tendency to uncoil from the internal guide carrier...ask me how i know 😂
    Its an easy enough job to remove and open it and realign the cables, theres a video on TH-cam of someone doing it.
    All academic now though as you went for the spare-wheel-thief option 😉
    Also it would probably been a good idea to spray the cavity behind the rock sliders with some sort of FluidFilm / Lanoguard protection before you installed them...to stop any existing corrosion getting any worse...just a suggestion.
    Looking forward to the offroad film!
    Keep up the good work 👍

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Aaah, I knew there was a reason I just couldn’t remember it exactly. 👍😊 I would think the old spare wheel was enough but apparently not, maybe a bit rusted under there too. 😅 I put some Brunox on the rusted part of the sill but I need to go back and redo the sills and do a bit of welding. Will after that spray with some oil of some kind. 👍 I think the rust will be the death of this car.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey, I didn't have time before I went on the trip. I had Raptor ready but I got recommended to get them sand blasted first but that I didn't have time for. So rocking the bare metal rock sliders. 😅 Was going to paint them black. But the good thing is that they are stainless steal so will probably outlast the sills on the discovery. 😂

    Great job !
    What size wheels are you running ?
    What type of tyre is your road tyre set up ?

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you Terry! 👍 it’s 265/65R17, it’s the biggest legal size I can run and I can still roll the car if the air suspension was to go bonkers. 👍😊 I use these tires spring, summer and fall. Then I have designated winter tires with studs, they are 245/70R17, a great on road choice, such a great tire to drive on. I think if I will do a longer trip down into Europe I will find a on road tire in that size or 245/75R17, the narrow spec is really nice to drive on.

My first thought was to write something inappropriate funny here, but I restrained my self. 😂 If you check my community page you can see that me and Kasper are on the same page when it comes to this topic. And if you watch my #overlandinginnorway series (multiple) all the way back from 2018 you will see we have addressed the off-road in Norway issue many times. 👍 One Norwegian rule I don't approve of is that legal roads covered in snow, not regularly cleared, is by law then nature, and there by you are driving off-road. It has stopped us so many times now it's getting a bit annoying. 😊 And yeah, not German, just plain old Norwegian. Be sure to subscribe to the channel if you haven't yet. 😉 Best, Simon.
