Ye, the problem is than any of said cars (P1 etc.) or Mitsubishi Evo variants like TME are getting somewhat "cult" status, the price will go skyhigh so that no one anymore drives em and they end up at the US and / or hands of private collectors.
When was last time you saw a R34 GT-R at the road, or mk IV TT-Supra? And before that, when was last time? Even at the UK they're not that common, let alone mainland EU they're more rare than Ferraris. I personally haven't ever seen a EVO 6.5 TME on the road and TT-Supra mk IV ... maybe 4 or 5 years ago in a car show.

Buy a P1 if you want to have the same driving experience as the 22b, both unmodified, for a much lesser price. I've driven both P1 and 22b, and on the road, there really isn't a lot in it. I would say that prodrive set up the P1 specifically for UK road use, and the majority of 22bs you would find are imports, so the P1 is a bit more compliant on British B roads. If you get a P1 for £50K I don;t think you lose out too much, certainly not losing out on £200K of car.

@@rulvra3072 They are quite different in day to day use. I had a P1 and a 22b for several years - I always preferred the P1. The biggest difference was the gearing. The 22b had the lower ratio sprint gearing - so it would top out at 90mph or so. It made it feel more frantic in day to day use. The harsher damping did make it feel nervous. The P1 had Prodrive tuned suspension and I always felt far more confident pressing on in the P1. To live with, I'd take the P1 every time. In the racing sims they'll both likely perform badly. They're old-ish road cars and the 22b was never designed as a homologated racer - it was a celebration model instead. I traded my P1 in after 90k miles and it was fully done. Spent. Ruined. But - I did also sell the 22b to buy a Nissan GTR. Suspect I could buy a whole fleet of GTRs these days, but still don't regret selling - It was fun, but not as a good as Sam is laying out. (Sorry to bust any dreams!).

@@smifffy69oh dang, thank you so much for that goldmine of information! From my (rather non existent irl) experience I went with my gut and chose the p1 too - ofc they wouldn't hold a candle to today's sports cars but they hold this weird charm that modern cars just forego. Or maybe that's just my nostalgia lol

Only 5 made it down under. They cost $120k and could not be driven on the road at that stage. Subaru did some major work on the cars to get them road legal eventually.

£ to smile ratio of these cars is unparalleled. I got my first Impreza Turbo in 1995, drove it to watch Colin win the 95 World crown and have since constantly owned one version or another, covering over 500k miles. I did over 180k miles each in two of them. Amazingly reliable and relatively cheap to run and maintain. I have run a tweaked 09 Sti for the last few years and it still drives as good as new. If you want real-world experience over theoretical specs this is the platform to own.

In New Zealand, the 22B had a cult following even though it was like 120k NZD at the time(when WRC still had Rally NZ) and was ideally suited to our rally stages err country roads. I remember it was the pin-up car of my teen years. I love the boxer engine sound - just like the WRC car, it makes modern cars like GT Black series sound so lame and soulless.

It’s great that you finally got to drive a Subie, especially the 22B, of all the variants…it is considered the pinnacle of Imprezas by most Subaru fans. I own the Subaru Legacy S401 and although a bit more refined than the Imprezas and almost 20 years of age, it’s still fun to drive, so can imagine how good the 22B would be.

I owned an STI 5 Type R V-ltd and was fortunate enough to drive a friends 22B regularly. Performance, handling and drive wise, there really was nothing in it. The 22B definitely has the edge on looks though. The STI 5 has the same DCCD as the 22B. The P1 did away with that for the UK market. A P1, or STI 5 would be more cost effective to purchase, but would you always feel a little short changed on the looks? Decisions decisions.
