With huge thanks to Richard from ‪@Challengetheroad‬ , I experience the incredibly rare and increasingly valuable Subaru Impreza 22B STi.
    Check out Richard's channel here:
    / @challengetheroad
In 1998, Subaru of Japan produced a widebody, coupe WRX STi called the "22B STi" produced between March and August 1998. The 22B was used to commemorate both Subaru's 40th anniversary as well as the third consecutive manufacturer's title for Subaru in the FIA World Rally Championship. On the release of the sales, all 400 Japanese units sold out in from 30 minutes to 48 hours, depending on the report.[11] Another 24 were produced for export markets-16 for the UK, along with another 5 for Australia, and 3 prototypes. The 16 cars imported to the UK were modified by Prodrive, with longer gear ratios, and UK specification lights. Because 50 22Bs had already been imported privately into the UK, Subaru had to wait until 1999 to register the 16 officially imported cars under the VCA's Single Vehicle Approval scheme.
The 22B had the EJ22G engine (note, the internal Subaru material states the closed-deck block comes from a version III EJ20G). This means the displacement was increased from 2.0 L (1,994 cc) to 2.2 L (2,212 cc), bored up to 96.9 mm (3.81 in). Officially, it produced 280 PS (276 bhp; 206 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 363 N⋅m; 268 lbf⋅ft (37 kg⋅m) at 3,200 rpm of torque, fuel feed by Electronic Fuel Injection and an IHI RHF 5HB turbocharger.[12] This car was given a unique color of blue and had fender flared widebody taken from the Peter Stevens designed WRC car, thus widening the width by 80 mm (3.15 inches). The car has a unique hood, front and rear fenders, a WRC-inspired front bumper and a unique adjustable rear wing. During assembly, a WRX Type R chassis was taken off the line. The fenders were replaced with the 22B STi fenders. The suspension is provided by Bilstein, while the brakes were four-pot front/two-pot rear STi calipers, painted red. The wheels were increased in size from the standard WRX Type R STI Version from 16- to 17-inches and the clutch was upgraded to a sintered twin clutch with a ceramic disk. The origin of the name 22B has been debated. The 22 referred to the 2.2-liter displacement and the B was thought to be for the Bilstein suspension. This would correlate with the idea that Subaru sells a Legacy Spec B, where the B represents the Bilstein suspension. However, the B is actually a Subaru internal code for Turbo. 22B is also hexadecimal for the number 555, in reference to State Express 555, Subaru's major sponsor in the WRC from 1993 to 2004.[13] The car's curb weight is 1,270 kilograms (2,800 lb).

Ye, the problem is than any of said cars (P1 etc.) or Mitsubishi Evo variants like TME are getting somewhat "cult" status, the price will go skyhigh so that no one anymore drives em and they end up at the US and / or hands of private collectors.
When was last time you saw a R34 GT-R at the road, or mk IV TT-Supra? And before that, when was last time? Even at the UK they're not that common, let alone mainland EU they're more rare than Ferraris. I personally haven't ever seen a EVO 6.5 TME on the road and TT-Supra mk IV ... maybe 4 or 5 years ago in a car show.

Then I got cold feet. Was building a garage at the time and upgraded the door to being wider because the 22B is wider than a normal Impreza.
Gutted is an understatement, now their selling for crazy money (rightly so) and wish I’d scooped up a P1 before they jumped in price.
My advise….. Get a P1, better than money in the bank.

I did over 180k miles each in two of them. Amazingly reliable and relatively cheap to run and maintain. I have run a tweaked 09 Sti for the last few years and it still drives as good as new. If you want real-world experience over theoretical specs this is the platform to own.

Well done Sam. Good take on a very special car. It is the pinnacle of Subaru ownership however their investment value now means you will very rarely, if ever see one on the road. Buy a P1 if you want to have the same driving experience as the 22b, both unmodified, for a much lesser price. It is every bit as good to drive and values are shooting up on the coat tails of the 22b however they can still be found. Great piece.

Great video Sam, probably a shame these 90’s JDM cars are skyrocketing in value as the ones that haven’t been written off just arnt being driven. Spotted a mk 4 supra on the road today, first one I’ve seen in a long time but it was extremely clean so probably not driven much.

This feels like a step change. Like a reward for us after ferrari, porsche, mclaren, Aston etc. My watch doesn't cost 40k.
I can't express my joy and surprise at seeing you drive a (expletive) 22b. Something we mortals can relate to. Colin and then Richard took a hammer to rallying. Just destroyed it.
I tried a scooby many years ago in Peebles. £17,000. Nearly took it. Shouldn't have looked at the log book and paper work. It had been owned by Colin's family. Didn't want to risk it. One previous owner? Great.
He was a rally driver... Ah. Maybe not.
I hope you get a bigger audience from this film. There are lots of golden cars and makes out there.
Oh, BTW.. If in doubt, go flat out.

It’s great that you finally got to drive a Subie, especially the 22B, of all the variants…it is considered the pinnacle of Imprezas by most Subaru fans. I own the Subaru Legacy S401 and although a bit more refined than the Imprezas and almost 20 years of age, it’s still fun to drive, so can imagine how good the 22B would be.

  • @jone70

Sam, I think you should get a Scooby. I've had two, one wrx and one sti version, both imports and they are all very good, get one of these or an RA and you won't be disappointed! They are all light and pushing out more bhp than quoted. Just don't get a UK car, they were down on power for the standard wrx

Every marque has their top trumps model, and this is definitely Subaru's. The 22B has been caught by the collector bug though, so it doesn't really matter whether it's manifestly better than a P1 or other special edition - supply vs demand will always amplify the asking price. Lovely thing though, and great vid as alway Sam 👍
