I noticed literally as he said only two back seats, there is a middle seat belt. Also the rear wipers came on alot of the JDM base market cars, but also the AU market too. My 01 I30T is the Infiniti Canadian version, so its missing the rear fog light, and rear wiper. As the Cefiro from Japan and the Maxima STR from Austrailia had. The EU also had different requirements on sedans/saloon cars. Love this car and the 90s JDM feel, fit and finish. It just worked, every time!
Yup, the JDM cars got all the goods and if anything, any market other than US (and maybe Canada?) tended to be a little better. My JDM 2010 STI has self-leveling headlights, power mirrors, fog lights (front and rear), rear wiper (which is actually useful!) and probably other goodies too.
Things to actually note: the Kenwood head unit wasn’t aftermarket, it was a factory upgrade option that literally says Subaru on it. The back seat isn’t a two seater, as you can see there is a lap belt and three buckles. In the trunk there is a 6-CD changer which is why the head unit was the upgraded Kenwood unit.

I was born 1980. I watched WRC in the 90's and was fortunate to score a slightly hail-damaged 2.5RS in 1998 while in HS. I modified it and drove the crap out of it until I sold it in the 2000s (I really wish I hadn't). The 22B was my icon going back to when it was released and I irrationally love it over every other car. If I could afford to buy a $300k car, out of all the supercars it would definitely be a 22B. I can even recognize how stupid that is.
Correction for Doug: the I/C intercooler spray "auto" function is designed to spray water on the intercooler when the engine senses climbing boost levels. The auto spray will discharge water during the boost climb and go for 5 second intervals. Only available on JDM models, but the switches can be recreated for U.S. models. My tuner makes the auto spray modules and the map change switches for changing tuner maps on the fly.
Doug! I had a 01 GC8. That back seat is for 3 (count the belts) and there are more cup holders next to the defroster button on the dash, it folds out… ya missed them 😂
I know this car. First owner was Akihito Shibata. I met him on business in Hokkaido when he had this car in 1999. Still looks good although too bad the original wing is gone. I wonder how many owners this has had since.
First generation Imprezas, regardless of trim, were wonderful cars to drive. The suspension just worked, the car just did what you asked it to. They did especially well on bumpy backroads, just not caring about road irregularities, with no bump steer.
Cars and Bids has been a real win-win... Doug gets access to more of these rare cars, we get to see more videos about them, and sellers get more awareness and attention on their listings!
One of the best cars ever made imo. My uncle had one about a decade ago and said it was the best car he’s ever owned and the only one he regrets selling
The engines are pretty reliable tbf. My dad had a 1999 wrx for 6 years without any trouble. They’ve got a bad reputation because of how most owners treat them
Love this type of homologated style with wide fenders. It’s a subtle but purposeful look. Very clean. Nice to see people actually driving and enjoying the car👍
I memorized when these would show up in the used car dealer in Gran Turismo 4 because they were the best Subaru in the game (in my opinion). Try to find an Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition next! They were really crazy, with the titanium turbocharger and stuff.
I bought a new ‘04 WRX, had it for 8 years and 100k miles. I lightly modded it and wow was she reliable. Only thing other than maintenance, only replaced driver side fog lamp twice, that’s it. Woman rear ended me and totaled it day before I was gonna sell it. Her insurance gave me $14.5k for it, only $9k less than I paid for it!
Subaru liked to refer to their rally sucsess with the codes for the cars, for example RB5 refered to Richard Burns no5 car and Subaru them self said the 22b is a hexadecimal reference to the 555 Colin Mcrae car it shared the body shell with. It might look like a basic Impreza (i think that was the point) but the 22b has almost a cult following due to it's Rally pedegree, back in the 90's there was the Subaru - Mitsubishi wars in rallying and they had fans so dedecated there would be fights at events over which manufacture was best.
I've never seen Doug justify so many modifications, especially on such a high end car. A lot of mods done here are reversible, save for potentially the roll cage (which... why?), but I can't imagine that this is going to sell for near 300k.
I had a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS for a few years, it was a very fun car. The 22B styling is great, but I'm sad the prices are so expensive because I doubt that people who pay that much will be able to enjoy driving their Subaru the way I got to enjoy driving mine.
I'm just over here rocking my WRX swapped shitbox Impreza coupe with about $10k into it. Love my wannabe22b and feeling pretty good about my project!! 😁
@@MichaelEilers I have a swapped coupe. It has the same basic chassis and doors as the 22b, without the widebody. But it is a factory two door, no rear doors at all.
The subaru impreza to own is the 1995 version 2 type RA that is the real deal 👌 super rare and the quickest homologation impreza of them all. 22b is very heavy
This 22B is a bit odd. Removing the wheels, wing, gear knob and steering wheel, all items that command an incredibly high price used, and replacing them with non OEM units, as well as having a roll cage, kind of makes this too modified to be considered easy to return to factory in my opinion. If it were my money I'd buy a completely stock one, or just buy a V4 STI Type R for a fraction of the price.
As Doug points out though, you could happily daily this, knowing that you weren't going to hurt the value as much doing so. And personally I'd only buy a car to drive it.
@@phuzz00 Why would anyone daily a car like that? At this point almost everything japanese from the 90s is so overpriced. Maybe it’s worth as an investment (until the bubble bursts) but as a daily you’ll get much more bang for your buck spending it on practically anything else.
That's correct.. the 22B does stand for 2.2L and Bilstein suspension. That car looks like it's one of the 25 made for outside of Japan. The 400 for Japan had different tail lights

If these people are THIS upset, they should buy it and return it back to stock, they make it sound so easy.
I would be willing to bet some of these mods were done out of necessity due to it potentially being in an accident of some sort. The OEM replacement parts would have to be extremely expensive I imagine. If I had to guess, I bet the car was in an accident where it hit a curb (or something similar) with one side of the wheels, spun around, and took off the rear bumper/spoiler and potentially took out the rear glass as well. It's just a hunch but that could explain why things have been changed either willingly or unwillingly.
I'd want to check the history of this car before bidding on it. I have a suspicion wheels and wings are replaced because the originals were damaged somehow.
Agreed. Why on earth would someone change out those perfect factory parts for some inferior aftermarket ones? Because they were damaged and you can’t find them again.
The 22B STi is special only because of it's low production numbers of barely over 400 units total made. The 22B club in Japan still meets to this day at a Subaru dealership which was started by one of the 1st 22B owners. The 22B was a vast leap in automotive and rally technology. However, I will still stand by Richard Hammond's statement of the GD chassis being the best ever built by Subaru. I may be bias because I own one, but the driver/machine connection is much more raw and pure than that of the newer models without a doubt.
@@bradydevergilio7478I can say with all confidence that you have a massive point in your statement. The advancement in the manual transmission/transfer case dccd control of the 2004 - 2007 STi GD chassis were a helping hand to handle excessive power applications, and it did it surprisingly well. I've seen stock drivetrains handle 700whp without issue. The added safety did tend to weigh the vehicle down a bit as the newer models from 2008 - to current have been redesigned and heavier crash protection systems have been implemented since the days of the GD.
The rarity factor is hilarious in what people will pay. I can draw a one of a kind art piece, literally 1 of 1, and it won't be worth anything, but some things people will pay thru the nose for based mostly on rarity. It's an interesting quirk of the human thought process.
16:05 Hi Doug, if you look at the long black rectangle underneath the vents and 2 to the left of the hazard lights, this is actually a double drink holder. Push it in and it will pop out. Same as in my old GC8 WRX.
I think there were only 500 yellow Volvo 850 T5-R cars brought into America (or wagons, I forget) but those aren't valued crazy high like this Subaru. I guess collectors are willing to pay.
I would be shocked if a 22b ever dipped below £300k, i understand people outside europe won't get it but anything attached to Mcrae and wrx will have an almost cult following.
Doug I love your videos man, but I dont know if it is the frame rate, but the speed visually of you hanging at the motor explaining looks sped up, but somehow the audio is synced, wizard! :D
Anyone notice the resprayed front upper radiator support, it should be a darker non metallic plain ol' blue, and also the other vin plate on drivers side is missing on strut housing, is this a mock up with a plaque purchased from ebay #0000.1 of 400 ?! lol
I don't mind most of the modifications because they seem period correct, but the replacement wing is baffling to me. Maybe this thing was in a serious rear end collision that broke the wing beyond repair. I'll be watching the auction because I'm curious what this will go for.
Passenger door color doesnt seem to match the front fender as well but it could be lighting. This car is just a little fishy hopefully the new owner gets it fully inspected
It's a typical Japanese thing...unfortunately. I dealt with this often questionable (also form the technical point of view) mods in almost any car imported form Japan, they have to screw even the rarest cars at least with some fancy aftermarket radio.
There is absolutely zero reason to switch out the OEM adjustable rear wing for an aftermarket one that looks almost idential, and I can think of thousands (literally) of reasons not to. I'm betting this car was in an accident which damaged the rear wing and the owners couldn't afford to replace it with the OEM one from Subaru. Maybe the same is true for the wheels.
Does Doug do these videos exclusively for cars that are listed for sale on C&B? I don't know if I want to sell but I have a JDM 1998 Evo V Rs in the states that would be cool for him to do a video on. The Rs trim is quite rare.
I had a chance to buy a 22B with damage a few years ago for like 50-60K CAD. I wonder if it was this car. I think it will still go well in the 6 figures USD with the mods and prior damage.

Worked very nicely indeed too.😊
Yup, the JDM cars got all the goods and if anything, any market other than US (and maybe Canada?) tended to be a little better.
I have to imagine the modifications to this car will lower it's value substantially.

Correction for Doug: the I/C intercooler spray "auto" function is designed to spray water on the intercooler when the engine senses climbing boost levels. The auto spray will discharge water during the boost climb and go for 5 second intervals. Only available on JDM models, but the switches can be recreated for U.S. models.

V2 and v3 had the TD05 or VF22. You could actually chose which turbo you wanted when you bought them new
This 22B is a bit odd.

Because of safety standards none of the other chassis ever had the chance to be as raw as the GD
The added safety did tend to weigh the vehicle down a bit as the newer models from 2008 - to current have been redesigned and heavier crash protection systems have been implemented since the days of the GD.
he 22B was a vast leap in automotive and rally technology? it never won any rallies. 22b never competed
The rarity factor is hilarious in what people will pay. I can draw a one of a kind art piece, literally 1 of 1, and it won't be worth anything, but some things people will pay thru the nose for based mostly on rarity. It's an interesting quirk of the human thought process.

There is absolutely zero reason to switch out the OEM adjustable rear wing for an aftermarket one that looks almost idential, and I can think of thousands (literally) of reasons not to.
